It always amazes me that people like Linda Shewchook always think they are, somehow, detached and above the impact of their actions. Whether it is businesses and their owners that pollute the air and water, taliban Jack weakening the military or Mcguinty refusing to do anything about native terrorism, or advocacy groups codling criminals, they never see or choose to ignore the results until it bites them in the ass.
The old cliché has it that "a conservative is a liberal who's been mugged by reality." If that's one good working description, it's literally true in this case.
Now if this woman can logically proceed by inductive reasoning from this specific case to the general societal situation, she will have discarded a big chunk of her leftist brainwashing...
either stiffer penalties or allow the victims to arm themselves for their own defense. Concealed carry permitting has dropped violent confrontational crime in every jurisdiction it has been adopted (even Britain).
None of this thug's elderly victims need have been armed...just the thought they (or a passer-by) could be, and that they had the right to defend themselves, would be enough.
When Florida instituted CC their seniors were preyed on by armed thugs who put the violent crime rates and crime mortalities into the triple digits...after CC passed, confrontational crime fell over 300% the first year...less than 1% of the CC permits went to seniors yet they were the net beneficiaries of the new armed defense laws.
This punk's MO and motive fits the profile of 99.9% of violent crimes..they are crimes of opportunity carefully calculated and perpetrated with 3 prime provisos:
1) the absolute certainty the victims are unarmed/helpless
2) the near certainty of it going undetected.
3) if detected, the sentence is easy to take and rationalized by the gains made in the crime.
The more of these 3 criminal rationalizations you remove the less motivation there is to engage in crime.
Dystopian social engineering has left the public open to all 3 ...particularly the first motivator...I maintain that to create an atmosphere were the victim is at more risk than the criminal who preys on them is an act of an immoral and uncivil administration.
My 'elderly' sisters were carjacked, and injured in Detroit in June by a 16 yr, old and a 14 yr old. What the perps didn't expect was the loud reaction from the girls, hence lot's of attention and 911 calls. They were caught within 2 hrs.The 14 yr old already had a rap sheet. It was great to see this quote from the Detroit cops in the paper with the l'il darlins NAMES:
"The juveniles system is not working for the 14 yr old; we will charge them as adults."
Coming to Canada soon? A revised YCJA??Can we hope?
So how does a 17 year old violent coke junkie rate juvie? This is not joyriding, shoplifting or having beer underage. This was assault, often with weapons and robbery. The only thing better I guess would be the defense lawyer getting mugged.
The 'irony' is appreciated but no one, not even a misguided, lefty, bleeding heart deserves to be violently assaulted and robbed.
'Dave in Pa' has a point. Shewchook is identified as a "former" prisoners' rights group employee and she's complaining about the soft sentence given her mugger. So it's not unlikely that having been literally "mugged by reality" she's come to her senses and is now a 'former' lefty. If so, good.
You are correct, no one does deserve to be mugged and at no time in my post did I state that they did. What I clearly said is that I am starting to lose sympathy for people that have gone out of their way to create the system that we now have and who question that system once it fails them.
By advocating for prisoner rights, Ms Shewchook is somewhat responsible for creating a penal system where many receive better treatment and more amenities than they would if they were out on the street. As long as this is the case, people will continue to commit crimes because lets face it, jail is not that bad to them.
Let’s hope that this experience has in fact changed Ms Shewchook view on the situation, if it has then I would be proud to stand beside her and fight for the rights of victims!
Those people never learn, you can lead a socialist to reality but you can't make him think.
As the drones in our society they can only follow the scent from those in front. Their world does not allow, or indeed is it capable of, practical thinking, they seem to be missing that gene. Like the bloated Queen she brings forth more of her own in her own image, complete with programmed brain. Change is foreign to these people, and when it comes it only comes in the form of a new queen that programs their every thought. The new queens of their society, gore and suzuki, do their little dance and the hive is abuzz with excitement, and set forth in a new direction.
She still believes passionately in prisoners' rights. It's just that now she believes prisoners have a right to receive a sentence that fits their crime.

She'd better not "advocate" for stiffer sentencing too loudly, the perp will more than likely be out in nine months.

The 'Bleeding Hearts' are a big problem.
The 'Moral Hazard' thing rots society.

The truth is, this dame doesn't give a rat's ass about the feelings of victims, only herself, and believe me, the world is full of people like this.

H ha ha ha ...love it.
'Bout time a little reality kicked in.

Didn't we used to call this poetic justice?
... and one surely reaps what one sows.
