While I won't - can't - disagree that this tone of sniggering fake outrage is the default mode in much of journalism, it's even more common in broadcast journalism, which is, to put it diplomatically, the least deep or introspective of all the branches of the business.

Paula Todd just comes off like a sophomore trying too hard to be liked by the cool kids - i.e. Jimmy Breslin.

I really don't think during the second broadcast that his picture was inserted by mistake. CTV willingly and knowingly did that. Not exactly subliminal but it certainly had that effect on the
sheeple watching it. If I was Chiang, I'd take the network to task.

Watched Paula Todd last night dealing with the ypoung Canadian terrorist Khadr, held in Guantanamo Cuba.
She couldn't constrain her feelings for the young man, "does he understand whats going on around him."

One Californian newspaper published an interview with Wendy Cukier, where her credentials were 'Professor of justice studies'. I emailed the author and pointed her to Wendy's homepage at Ryerson which says 'information studies'. The author emailed me back and said 'She introduced herself as that so I had no reason to think otherwise'. Isn't there some kind of disciplinary reprimand in Canadian scientific circles for self-appointing?

Penny. Fox news has only been available here for the past couple of years. The CRTC ( our version of the FCC) would not approve it until recently. CNN of course has been around for years. Don't know what the stats are regarding viewership, but as a retired geezer I turn it on when I get up in the morning and it stays on until I'm forced to change channels in the evening. It is clearly the very best in news reporting, bar none.

If this character assination isn't grounds for a law suit I don't know what is. What irresponsible and biased bunk! Nothing like painting a target on the guy.

I find it hard to believe that our beloved CTV could commit an act of racism as described. I do not think that Main Stream Media is capable of racism, so it must not be true. This is a most damning indictment of CTV. Remember the fraudulent CBS / Rather documents, the fraudulent Reuters images, the fraudulent AP images, the fraudulent CBC editing of Prime Minister Harper's response to a question, and now this fraudulent presentation by CTV.

The fourth estate has betrayed us. They've betrayed us as customers. They've betrayed us a citizens. They've betrayed us as humans. I, for one, will never forget this. The CTV name is now mud.

Kudos to Kate for bringing this fraud to our attention. I am always loath to jump on any sort of "blogs rule" bandwagon, but it is clear that something has changed, and the fourth estate is being exposed for the fraud it is.

What has changed? Before Cerf, Kahn, and Bray invented the Internet and the World Wide Web, people forgot what was in newspapers within a week (after the birdcage had been cleaned), television was forgotten within days, and radio within hours. This allowed the perpetrators of the kinds of frauds we see here, because (unless you went to a lot of trouble digging in library archives) we couldn't hold them to the truth of their own behaviour.

But now, now we see it, incontrovertibly. We've all known that whenever the fourth estate presented a story on a topic we are an expert on, they got it wrong. We've always suspected that they probably get stories on topics we're not experts on wrong too. But now the structural truth leaks out, drop by drop, because of the combination of the archival and broadcast properties of this new technology we are using here.

The forth estate is not merely incompetent. They are not merely lazy. They are actively malicious. Sun Tzu advises knowing your enemies and choosing your battles. We now have more information on who our enemies are.

I'm sorry you got treated like this, Mr. Chiang. Perhaps there is at least some consolation that in this case, the malfeasance of CTV is already costing them reputation. Hopefully this will further translate into costing them money, should you choose to pursue that avenue of seeking redress. Furthermore, should you consider establishing a fund to pursue such redress, if you let us know here at SDA then I will contribute to it.

Excellent observation, VF. Why, for example, was the background not some gun collectors enjoying a round of beer and a game of cribbage after having responsibly locked their guns away when they were finished practicing the art of target shooting. It is an olympic sport, you know.

What is a gun for? A gun is for accelerating a projectile. Often this is done by applying a relatively high force to a relatively low mass in a relatively short time via an exothermic reaction that produces a relatively large volume of gas at relatively high pressure, although there are exceptions such as electromagnetic rail guns and particle accelerators such as the large hadron collider that we are hoping to soon shoot at CERN under Geneva.

Fine, so logically, the question then becomes, what are guns used for? Obviously, for exploring particle physics. For the art of sport shooting. For hunting food. And then, guns are sometimes used by bad people to harm innocent people. And guns are used by good people to harm bad people who are harming innocent people.

Wayne, get a lawyer my friend. As a hunter - even in Canada - I know people who have many more guns than you do. Collecting is a hobby AND an investment. Some firearms, like cars, stamps, etc. do increase in value over the years. You don't need an excuse to collect them.

I used to watch CTV because I thought they were the least left-wing of the bunch here in TO. Not anymore. What a crock of whale-poop.

Brian M - FOX is included in my basics with STAR CHOICE. It's great 24/7. (I'd pay extra if I had to) Not much Canadian content.

I think we should be paying closer attention to the licence renewal process when it comes up for the stations and the networks. The internet gives a collective voice for people to express their view of whether a licence should be renewed or not. A litany of falsehoods and supportable complaints will force the CRTC to reshape the licence conditions of some these newtworks. Some of them may actyally have to clean up their acts.
A couple of other fora that I participate in are already beginning to develop lists of media personality with demonstrable, repeatable biases that colour their "reporting". Slowly, accountibility may be coming, even if the industry itself will not self-police.

Something else that came from Mr Chiang's follow-up: the networks only keep "logger tapes" (the required record of the broadcast) for 30 days. So, if something comes over the air that needs following-up, its important to act quickly with complaints, or keep your PVR running.

It's so hard to watch any news on MSM. I've taken to Global. Wayne Chiang came across as so *normal* and likeable, her bias was immediately obvious. I have no idea who the man she was next interviewing was, but I think he saw Mr. Chiang the same way, normal, don't you, just based on what he said? They must keep the Kool-aid flowing all day at CTV and CBC.
