"What rankles is that CBC’s blatant populism is so easily perverted. Sure, this contest sparks debate around obviously contentious issues, but at what price? Do we jettison the CBC’s long history of progressive values because a few very loud voters demand it? I hope not."
"The school prohibits all jewelry except for ear studs as part of its uniform policy, but it does permit Sikhs to wear steel bracelets. The school makes no exception for chastity rings on the grounds that they do not form an integral part of the Christian faith."

I am not happy about the government making a trade to get the budget passed by the Senate unamended. I'd rather the Senate held it up or tried to change it. It would have made for a stronger case for reform.
But to agree to the implementation of the "Kyoto" bill in exchange for the budget was a bad move imho.
Like pigs at the trough? More like at home in bed with an IV.
"Senate records show him to be the only senator who has failed to file attendance sheets for this past April and May, and also disclose he was absent all but one Senate sitting day in June and November last year because of illness.
Lavigne, 61, was a Montreal Liberal MP from 1993 to 2002, when he was named to the Senate to create a vacant seat for former heritage minister Liza Frulla."
If it were not so sad, it would be laughable. With great fanfare, the supposedly reformed UN Human Rights Council just finished its first year of operation, a year in which its structure and agenda was to be determined. The new council replaced its predecessor, the discredited UN Human Rights Commission, infamous for being chaired by such lights as Libya, and for singling out Israel for abuse.
So how does the new council conclude this pivotal year? By removing two known human rights abusers, Cuba and Belarus, from its roster of "special mandates," and by enshrining Israel as the only country in the world to receive permanent scrutiny. [...]
This is certainly true, but the question remains who is to blame for this mess and what can be done about it. The answer lies in two small flashes of moral courage that should be recognized and built upon.
The first is the laudable pluck of Canada, the single nation that fought to the end against the outrageous "consensus" that was reached. First Canada opposed the package deal that included the singling out of Israel and the rewarding of Cuba and Belarus. The council chair ignored this, moving the item forward as if consensus had been reached.
Next, Canada, unbowed, called a point of order against the chairman's action, forcing a vote. Finally, the council voted 46 to 1 (Canada), in effect retroactively and falsely deciding that consensus had been reached and blatantly violating, as Canada's ambassador put it, "more than 60 years of established practice of the UN, which is based on the fundamental principle of equality of all of its member states."
We can only hope that all who care about human rights and the integrity of the international system, for that matter, come to Canada's defense. To their shame, democracies such as Germany, the UK, France, the Czech Republic, Poland and Japan were among the 46 nations who did not. ...- http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1182409609694&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull

So Alan, I'm sure you are even more outraged by the behaviour of the unelected Minister of Public Works, Senator Michael Fortier. Right?

"Stephen Harper committed his first - and one of his biggest - flip flop aboutfaces on his very first day on the job by appointing an unelected senator despite promising never to do so and appointing this unelected senator to his cabinet even though he would be unaccountable to the House of Commons and our elected representatives despite running a campaign all about accountability.

What I wanted to share with you was one little bit of information about how GM's flex-fuel systems work in Brazil. It's a system that would not be possible in the US, thanks to differences in emission and safety laws, but it's both clever and annoying in the world's Number One ethanol-using country, Brazil.
The problem with E100 is that you can't start a car with it in the cold, anything below 40-42 degrees Fahrenheit because there isn't enough vapor pressure.
So, to start the E100 cars when it's chilly out, the Zafira and other Brazilian flex-fuel models have a six ounce reservoir that holds standard gasoline/petrol that is used to fire up the engine when necessary. This is also where the annoying part comes in:
GM's number one customer complaint in Brazil comes because people forget to fill this tiny gas tank up and can't start the car. In the photo gallery below, the reservoir is the thing with the little red cap.
This fact about E100 explains why E85 was developed in the first place. With E85, you don't need the dual-fuel system and can start the car in a wider range of temperatures. And now you know.
