The British National Union of Journalists' are still taking a lot of flack for boycotting Israel. They've set up a Facebook group to discuss it. Now remember - these are accredited, employed, British reporters. This is their resoning behind it:

"The world is currently at war and the heart of the conflict between the West and Al Qaeda is threefold (Al Qaeda’s consistently stated three demands for an end to hostilities): the Israeli occupation, the presence of US troops in the Middle East, and US support for authoritarian Middle Eastern regimes. There can be no end to this war until Israel ends the occupation. What more important battle is there to pick?"

In other words, they're boycotting Israel to help Al Qaeda win. You can read more at the facebook site (log-in required): http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=2310419644&topic=2550

Sask Party Candidate Christine Tell admits to a suspension from her job:

"REGINA (CP) - A candidate running for the Saskatchewan Party who was recently suspended from her job as a police officer says the move was politically motivated."

"In an interview with The Canadian Press, Christine Tell confirmed Friday that she was suspended last month for three days and put on probation for two years."

[snip]

"But since the issue has become public, Inspector Rick Bourassa confirmed the suspension is related to an investigation into improper disclosure of information by police officers and others to a company called Robinson Investigations."

"That investigation was conducted by the RCMP," said Bourassa."

"We received information from the RCMP that implicated one of our members, Christine Tell, in terms of improperly disclosing information."

It will be interesting to see where this investigation into improper disclosure goes.

Re: the expanding British boycott of Israel. The British National Union of Journalists has a Facebook group to discuss their boycott.

This is how one reporter defends it:

Here's how a smart, conservative country deals with an aging population:

"Working hard is no longer enough to warrant a promotion in one Chinese county, according to state media.

New rules state that government employees in Changyuan county, in Henan province, must be nice to their parents as well as being good at their jobs.

Assessors will interview relatives and friends of employees, to see if they espouse the values of filial piety.

Analysts say that as China modernises, traditions such as caring for parents have started to fade away.

The new proposal is an indicator that China's leaders are worried about supporting the country's ageing population."

The UK Charities Commission now believes that George Galloway may have known that Saddam Hussein was funding his charities, according to the Times of London. "The report opens the door for the Iraqi Government to sue the appeal’s trustees, including the MP, to return $376,000 (£188,000) of diverted aid."

The commission spent more than a year studying financial records and Iraqi Oil Ministry documents and interviewing oil market sources. ... Even more damaging than today’s finding that the fund was in effect being paid for by Saddam’s regime is the suggestion that the MP may have known about the tainted source, despite denials under oath to the US Senate and in a High Court libel trial against The Daily Telegraph. ...

Every scam needs a prop. Galloway's was a sick little girl. "The Mariam Appeal was created in 1998 after the MP brought a four-year-old Iraqi girl to Britain to be treated for leukemia." With George, you would have expected nothing less.

Gritty truth about Dion
Fellow shouldn't be allowed on loose without a licence
By PAUL JACKSON

I just figured out two words personifying the term of "utter idiot" of the first rank.

Or a simile of that same strange bird.

They are: Stephane Dion.

Yup, the current federal Liberal leader, one and the same.

In Calgary a week ago, Dion claimed he was much better for Alberta than our local hero Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Is Dion delusional?

"I'm telling you this Quebecer is much better for Alberta than the prime minister you have today," he told a feeble-minded massing of fawning Liberals.

Now, this is ridiculous, particularly coming from a man whose energy policies would bring catastrophe not only to Alberta, but to the rest of the nation. [...]

Twice during past elections I've sat down with this twerp and watched his astonishment when I've told him the Liberals wouldn't make any gains in Alberta.

The twit couldn't understand why not.

Just blinked.

So this man, who figures he would be better for Alberta than Harper, knows so little about our province it perplexes him.

He hasn't even the grey matter to realize Liberal policies are anathema to Alberta voters.

That we live in fear of what his ilk would do to us. ...-

MUMBAI: A right-wing Hindu group has asked public Internet centres in India to partly block access to Orkut, and is making a software to monitor abusive communities on the popular social networking site operated by Google.

The student wing of the Shiv Sena party said many Indians use Orkut to bad-mouth religious groups and disturb communal harmony, and also spread misinformation about India.

The group is part of a growing band of cultural vigilantes opposed to what they see as increasing mimicry of the West. It often stops St. Valentine's Day celebrations, attacks clubs and pubs and prevents screening of sexually bold films.

"Orkut is used by many destructive elements to spread canards about India, Hindus, our gods and cultural heritage," said Abhijit Phanse, president of Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena, the student group.

"We are gently telling Internet cafe owners that it is their responsibility to see that surfers do not use their facility to carry out such hate campaigns," he said.

"Or else, we will have to do that job for them."

It appears inevitable that we're going to go down the emissions rabbit hole. Stephen Alpin's blog looks at: How will climate change policies play out in Canada? How, or will, the federal government and provinces work together to manage the environment–economy tradeoffs? How can players in the energy sector navigate through these unpredictable waters? This blog was built to address these questions.

Sorry for the length: I don't have a link, nor do I have the source. (Does anyone else?) However, it sounds authetic.

'Australia Now, Canada Tomorrow? Excerpts from an on-going debate in Australia.

'Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia, as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks. The day after a group of mainstream Muslim leaders pledged loyalty to Australia and her Queen at a special meeting with Prime Minister John Howard, he and his Ministers made it clear that extremists would face a crackdown.

'Treasurer Peter Costello, seen as heir apparent to Howard, hinted that some radical clerics could be asked to leave the country if they did not accept that Australia was a secular state, and its laws were made by parliament "If those are not your values, if you want a country which has Sharia law or a theocratic state,
then Australia is not for you," he said on National Television.

'"I'd be saying to clerics who are teaching that there are two laws governing people in Australia - one the Australian law and another Islamic
law - that is false. If you can't agree with parliamentary law, independent courts, democracy, and would prefer Sharia law and have the opportunity to go to another country which practices it, perhaps, then, that's a better option", Costello said. Asked whether he meant radical clerics would be forced to leave, he said those with dual citizenship could possibly be asked to move to the other country.

'Education Minister Brendan Nelson later told reporters that Muslims who did not want to
accept local values should "clear off." Basically, people who don't want to be Australians, and who don't want, to live by Australian values and understand them, well then, they can basically clear off", he said.

'Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques. Quote:
"IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some
individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians. However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the 'politically correct' crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to Australia. However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand. This idea of Australia being a multi-cultural community has served only to dilute our
sovereignty and our national identity. And as Australians, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian,
or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society .. Learn the language! Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our
culture.

'"We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us. If the Southern Cross offends you, or you don't like "A Fair Go", then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't
care how you did things where you came from. By all means, keep your culture, but do not force it on others. This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND,
and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our
Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, 'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'. If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force
you to come here. You asked to be here, so, accept the country YOU accepted."'

Don't know if anyone on SD has been following the sad twisted tale of official deceit and intimidation in the Ed Brown tax case, but it seems that a man of principle who challenges the empire in its own courts to "show me the law" can be bullied, intimidated and set up for assassination by storm troops....but never shown the law which authorized this treatment.

The latest incident in the government's on-going persecution of Ed and his wife came yesterday when they were inadvertently caught staging a raid to assassinate the Browns in their home.

Not a doubt in my mind Ed Brown and his wife would be dead right now were it not for the power of the internet in getting the news out that authorities suppress.

Andrew - with regard to your posting on the essential decay/degeneration of the UK, could you inform us of the source of these conclusions?

The UNECE 'Trends in Europe and North America, the Statistical yearbook of the Economic Commission of Europe 2003 informs us that Albania at 15.3 and Turkey at 15.0 lead that area in illiteracy.

I didn't bother to check your other variables, but it would be constructive if you could provide the data source that led you to that conclusion.

Re Julian Falconer, the "human rights lawyer" who's been chosen by the Toronto District School Board to head up its enquiry into the board's "Safe Schools" policy and the shooting at C.W, Jefferys: here's part of a message I sent to a friend of mine who seems to think that Mr. Falconer's "just the thing".

"I've checked Falconer out: he appears to be a card carrying member of the Left. Am I surprised?

"For one thing, he received--and, presumably, accepted--a medal from the Urban Alliance on Race Relations. This ultra PC group is paid for by the taxpayer via the Liberals' Heritage Canada and is headed by one very NDP, Tam Goossens. This group also has--or had when Falconer was honoured--an initiative called, 'Addressing Systemic Racism in Toronto's Publicly Funded Schools'.

"There are other 'alarm bell' alliances for me. I've also read the smarmy letter to Mr. Falconer from the head of the Toronto teacher’s union, who, on his teachers' behalf, should have aggressively addressed this issue long ago.

"No, I don't think Mr. Falconer is a white knight. Considering the other players in his sphere of influence, I think I'm well advised to see him as the silly Gingerbread Man did NOT see the fox at the river: I'll walk around, thanks.

"Mr. Falconer may do some substantive good. However, his politically correct, racially motivated alliances do not augur well for such an outcome: more bandaids, methinks. I'd LOVE to be wrong here.”

Mr. Falconer is also, it seems, a fan of the Charter and he was one of the lawyers on Maher Arar's legal team.

Instead of choosing someone who'll think outside the box and, without fear or favour, make a truthful diagnosis of the problems--the dismantling of the biological family, the Jamaican culture of drug dealing and mother-led families, and the entitlements--not responsibility--promoted by the Charter, there will be no real change.

The TDSB has chosen a lefty who thinks just the way the functionaries who have ruined the system think. I've also checked the parameters of Falconer's enquiry. Apparently, he's going to speak to C.W. Jefferys teachers only. It seems that his mandate doesn't include a wide survey--which would be DEVASTATING to the board: misdemeanours of all kinds are excused all over this country by PC public boards.

I predict more of the same PC crap here. I could be wrong. I hope I am.

Lookout: Sorry for the length: I don't have a link, nor do I have the source. (Does anyone else?) However, it sounds authetic.

It's a piece of widely circulated (junk) email, the contents of which are at most half-authentic. The quotations in the first half are real, taken from media interviews by Ministers Costello and Nelson.

The statement comprising the far more inflammatory second half, which the email implies are attributable to PM Howard, is in fact a popular email rant based on an opinion-piece written by a Georgia-based USAF veteran shortly after 9/11.

lookout - from what you say about Falconer - that he was one of Ahar's lawyers; that he's a fan of the Charter; that he's already committed to multiculturalism - I agree with you. The inquiry at Jefferey's school is dead before it begins. It will be empty PC rhetoric.

Remember Gwyn Morgan,Harper's buddy who was branded a racist for saying the same.It is well-known that the first step to solving a problem is admitting that you have a problem. Sandy on Jackson: Dion an “utter idiot”- Why so extreme?

In today’s Calgary Sun column, Paul Jackson comes right out and calls Stephane Dion an “utter idiot” and an “absolute fool.” I am appalled! Why? Because, as a federal Conservative supporter, I would be the first to fisk the writing of any journalist who referred to the prime minister in those terms.

Note: I had not planned on writing a post today, but when I was scrolling through “Canada” here this morning, I came across Paul Jackson’s Calgary Sun column “Gritty Truth About Dion.” Once I had read the column I knew I had to take the time to fisk it, even if a shortened version. Why? Because I knew that if the same words were used about PM Stephen Harper, I would have, rightly, been outraged. [...]

Al Qaeda's new enemy -- Iraqis

The Three Stooges are alive and well, and part of the Conservative Cabinet.

Canadian journalist, Angelo Persichilli, (T-Sun) deserves a huge slap on the back. His one article makes more sense than thity years of 'political-correctness' has.

//www.torontosun.com/News/Columnists/Persichilli_Angelo/2007/06/10/4248654.html

[ We've failed them, again. The media and politicians have failed our children, our young generations, again. ]Angelo.

[ Two events in the past two weeks -- the killing of a 15-year-old boy in a school and the tragic car crash on Islington following a police chase -- have confirmed what has become the most serious problem our society is facing: The abdication of responsibility by media and politicians to look at the root causes of the problems in our society. ]AP (Angelo Persichilli, NOT Associated Press !!)

[ In thinking (Mayor Miller's) like this, we have removed the responsibility of the institutions that should be in between our children and the guns: Families, schools system, and politicians.

We have destroyed the traditional concept of family without being able to create a new one. ]

Angelo needs a lot of support on this. Think the media will be there for him ??

I just googled a combination of the words, jamacian, shootings, gangs, and toronto. To my surprise there is very little written in any newspapers that link these words together. However,in today's toronto star there is a bit about the "community's" reluctance to speak to the police. I wonder what community they are referring to,the victim community, the shooting community,or maybe it is the crying mothers community.

lberia said, referring to prisoner abuse allegations in Afghan: "First there were only two; then there were four; now, there are six."

That is UNSUBSTANTIATED ALLEGATIONS OF MISTREATEMENT OF TALIBAN BY AFGHAN AUTHORITIES.

As per AQ/Taliban SOP where they are to claim they were tortured. Where are they lberia, where are the photos, statements, doctors' reports.

If you have proper evidence to present, do so.

Is that the best you can do, call three unnamed Cabinet Ministers the Three Stooges.

lberia presents more evidence of the intellectual bankrupcy of the LPC. BTW, can you take me to the link that describes how Libs have paid back the money they stole from the taxpayers via Adscam?

Nice try.

Real world spy thriller
The Iran deal Britain rejected demanded hostage swap, not Easter 'gift'

By Gordon Thomas

LONDON -- Behind Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's announcement of his Easter "gift"
to the people of Britain by releasing his pawns - the 15 hostages - was the
barely concealed fury of a tyrant who repeatedly tried, and failed, to drive
a horrendous deal.

As well as being allowed to stage-manage the release of the hostages, he
wanted an Iranian family who have sought refuge in Britain to be handed back
to face certain torture and death.

They are Iran's former spy chief, General Ali Reza Askari, his wife Azil,
and their three teenage children. They had secretly arrived in Britain just
five days before the Revolutionary Guards captured Faye Turney and her
fellow sailors in the still disputed waters between Iran and Iraq.

The Askaris were spirited out of Iran by an MI6-led operation that one
intelligence officer called "the most daring for years."

What infuriated president Ahmadinejad was that Askari had been a personal
friend and had defected with the latest details of how close Iran is to
having a nuclear bomb - and how far Ahmadinejad will go to support attacks
on British troops in Basra.

MI6 agents in Iran now know that the capture of the fifteen sailors had
been personally ordered by Ahmadinejad to trade them for the Askari family.

"It was a deal the Iranian negotiators repeatedly raised during all the
talks our diplomats had with them," confirmed a senior intelligence officer
in London. "Time and again the Iranians were polite, but were firmly told
Britain would never consider such an exchange."

While Faye Turney and the other hostages had no clue as to what really lay
behind their capture, General Askari and his family knew only too well the fate that awaited them if Iran could somehow force Britain to return them to
Tehran.

No amount of assurance by their MI6 "minders" in the safe house "somewhere
in Britain" that they were indeed secure could hide their own fears during
the hostage crisis.

That only came when they saw the TV footage of the freed sailors returning
home. The family hugged each other and repeatedly thanked their minders.

The operation to help General Askari to defect had begun in December 2006,
after an MI6 officer at the British Embassy in Tehran sent a coded message
to the Iranian Desk at MI6 HQ overlooking the Thames.

Checks were made on Askari's background. He was 63 years old and, as well
as Iran's spy chief, had been deputy defense minister.

Soon 50 personnel were involved in spiriting the Askaris out of Iran. A
team of agents "minded" Askari from the time he said he wanted to defect.
At MI6 HQ, staff organized passports for the family and their travel
documents.

An MI6 "housekeeper" selected the appropriate safe house in which the
family would stay. Security-cleared linguists were chosen to teach the
Askaris English.

As each arrangement fell into place, it was signed-off by various
directors before ending up in MI6 chief John Scarlett's office.

In January 2007 Meir Dagan, Mossad's chief, flew to London. Over
sandwiches and coffee with Scarlett in an MI6 conference room, Dagan had
agreed to provide what "help" he could. He suggested the "exit strategy"
for Askari should be either through Syria or Turkey; both were countries
Askari visited on a regular basis.

More meetings had followed in Tel Aviv between MI6 agents and Mossad.
Turkish intelligence was brought into the loop. Still further discussions
followed in Ankara.

There were also the first high-risk contacts between Iranian-born Mossad
agents and Askari in Tehran. Having established he really wanted to defect,
Askari insisted his wife and family must also be brought out of Iran. For
them to remain behind would guarantee their deaths.

The request was swiftly agreed by Scarlett. By early February a working team had been established in MI6 to develop scenarios that would bring
Askari and his family to the West.

On Jan. 25, Askari's wife and children booked a holiday on the Black Sea
resort of Samusun. Awaiting them were Turkish intelligence officers and an
MI6 agent. Meantime General Askari flew to Damascus, ostensibly to meet
Syrian intelligence officers and members of the Hezbollah at a regular
regional intelligence gathering.

Having been assured his wife and children were about to board a plane from
Istanbul to Rome, General Askari caught a flight from Damascus to Istanbul
on Feb. 27.

As instructed, he checked into a hotel and unpacked his clothes, having
paid for his room by credit card to cover two nights. A Mossad agent
observed the reservations being made.

On the evening of March 1, Askari left the hotel - and never returned. A
car driven by a Turkish intelligence officer took him across the border with
Bulgaria.

From Sofia he caught a flight to Rome. Sat behind him on the plane was an
MI6 officer. Escorted by yet another MI6 officer, Askari flew to London.
Within hours he was being debriefed.

Next day Askari was reunited with his family in the safe house. The
Iranian Foreign Ministry two days later issued an official notification to
Turkey that "General Askari has gone missing and we request all possible
assistance to locate him. He may have been kidnapped by foreign agents."

Shortly afterwards the plot to capture the 15 sailors was launched - to
become a "deal, no deal."

This weekend the Askari family, accompanied by their minders, will be
driven on a carefully chosen route through the English countryside to see
for themselves the freedom which is now as much theirs as that for Faye
Turney and the other sailors who were used as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's pawns.

Global cooling effect
Terence Corcoran, National Post

The science behind the idea of man-made global warming, always theoretical and often speculative, appears set to receive another blow.

A report in New Scientist magazine yesterday chronicles the work of a crew of scientists who forecast a new wave of global cooling brought on by a decline in activity in the sun.

The New Scientist report, along with other scientific assessments warning of global cooling, also come as a blow to the campaign -- led by David Suzuki and one of the directors of his foundation -- to portray all who raise doubts about climate change theory -- so-called skeptics -- as pawns of corporate PR thugs manipulating opinion.

Dramatic global temperature fluctuations, as New Scientist reports, are the norm. A Little Ice Age struck Europe in the 17th century. New Yorkers once walked from Manhattan to Staten Island across a frozen harbour. About 200 years earlier, New Scientist reminds us, a sharp downturn in temperatures turned fertile Greenland into Arctic wasteland.

These and other temperature swings corresponded with changing solar activity. "It's a boom-bust system, and I expect a crash soon," says Nigel Weiss, a solar physicist at the University of Cambridge.

Scientists cannot say precisely how big the coming cooling will be, but it could at minimum be enough to offset the current theoretical impact of man-made global warming.

Sam Solanki, of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Germany, says declining solar activity could drop global temperatures by 0.2 degrees Celsius. "It might not sound like much," says New Scientist writer Stuart Clark, "but this temperature reversal would be as big as the most optimistic estimate of the results of restricting greenhouse-gas emissions until 2050 in line with the Kyoto protocol."

Last month, the Russian Academy of Sciences' astronomical observatory reported that global cooling could develop in 50 years. Khabibullo Abdusamatov, head of the agency's space research branch, is reported to have said a period of global cooling similar to one seen in the late 17th century could start in 2012-2015 and reach its peak in 2055-2066.

"The Kyoto initiatives to save the planet from the greenhouse effect should be put off until better times," he said.

"People who are raised in the industrial world and who get enthused about systems thinking are likely to make a terrible mistake. They are likely to assume that here, in systems analysis, in interconnection and complication, in the power of the computer, here at last, is the key to prediction and control. This mistake is likely because the mindset of the industrial world assumes that there is a key to prediction and control.

I assumed that at first too. We all assumed it, as eager systems students at the great institution called MIT. More or less innocently, enchanted by what we could see through our new lens, we did what many discoverers do. We exaggerated our own ability to change the world. We did so not with any intent to deceive others, but in the expression of our own expectations and hopes. Systems thinking for us was more than subtle, complicated mindplay. It was going to Make Systems Work.

But self-organizing, nonlinear, feedback systems are inherently unpredictable. They are not controllable. They are understandable only in the most general way. The goal of foreseeing the future exactly and preparing for it perfectly is unrealizable. The idea of making a complex system do just what you want it to do can be achieved only temporarily, at best. We can never fully understand our world, not in the way our reductionistic science has led us to expect. Our science itself, from quantum theory to the mathematics of chaos, leads us into irreducible uncertainty. For any objective other than the most trivial, we can't optimize; we don't even know what to optimize. We can't keep track of everything. We can't find a proper, sustainable relationship to nature, each other, or the institutions we create, if we try to do it from the role of omniscient conqueror."

Shamrock:

The allegations are unsubtantiated and may even be false, but you're missing the point. O'Connor, Day and MacKay (aka Larry, Curly and Moe) can't even get their stories straight. Conservative supporters must be feeling all warm and fuzzy watching these three (and Dear Fat Leader) fumble an issue that could have so easily been put to rest if it wasn't for ingrained Con arrogance.

Oh, and I see you're trying to switch the topic to Adscam. In fact, Adscam is another example of Con incompetence, where they can't even improve in the polls against a corrupt Lib party led by an incomprehensible leader.

Palestinians blasted for media disguise (How low can you go? Try pretending to be media.)

JERUSALEM - Journalists on Sunday condemned Palestinian militants for using a television truck to disguise their assault on an Israeli military position, saying the new tactic would make their jobs significantly more dangerous.

In Saturday's attack, four gunmen drove a white jeep with press markings in English and Arabic to a fence on the Gaza- Israel border, then broke through on foot and attacked a guard tower in a failed attempt to capture a soldier. Israeli troops killed one gunman, while the others escaped.

The attackers, from Islamic Jihad and an offshoot of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement, abandoned the jeep. Associated Press photos show a white armored vehicle of a type used by reporters, its windshield pocked by bullet holes, bearing red markings reading "TV" and "Press."

Reporters covering the Israeli-Palestinian conflict often mark their cars to avoid being targeted. The incident Saturday marked the first time combatants have disguised themselves as reporters in an attack in the last seven years of violence. ...-

Gunfights in Lebanon siege camp after 17 killed

NAHR AL-BARED, Lebanon (AFP) - Lebanese soldiers and diehard Islamist militants entrenched in a refugee camp fought gunbattles on Sunday after at least 17 people were killed in an operation to storm rebel positions.

As the showdown entered its fourth week, an army officer at the scene said the high casualties were suffered in clashes on Saturday that were often at close quarters and accompanied by heavy artillery fire from the military.

The army, which has encircled Nahr al-Bared, tried to push into the Palestinian refugee camp in north Lebanon and overrun positions held by Fatah al-Islam militants, which has snipers posted on rooftops.

Amid sporadic fighting on Sunday, the army's spokesman said soldiers had advanced 50 metres (yards) inside the camp and were clearing booby-traps from four buildings where the Islamists had been driven out. ...-

HEADLINE:
President Bush Gets A hero's Welcome In Torana, Ontario.

That is slang for Toronto, ya see ..... I think, hmmm ? :)

Wait a minute. Make that Tirana, Albania !!

Albania, a former Socialist ruled country that has been ahead of Toronto's socialistic experiment by a few gernerations. Now they are greatful for America's help in giving them freedom. Toronto will be too, someday :)

[ TIRANA, Albania (AP) - President Bush, enthusiastically welcomed as the first U.S. president in this former communist nation, served notice Sunday he is running out of patience with Russia's objections to independence for neighboring Kosovo. ]

[``Sooner rather than later you've got to say `Enough's enough - Kosovo is independent,''' Bush said, telling Albanians what they wanted to hear. He said independence was a certainty. ]

[ Nearing the end of an eight-day trip, Bush got a hero's reception in this desperately poor country, still struggling to recover from being cut off from the rest of the world for four decades under the harsh rule of dictator Enver Hoxha. Hoxha died in 1985, and Albania emerged from isolation in 1990 but still is one of Europe's most impoverished lands. ]UK Gaurdian Unlimited.

MayDion Who?

I couldn't resist linking to this piece, as it has a special twist for Canadians. Alan Caruba, at Enter Stage Right, has put together a proposal to end the current U.S.-Mexico immigration brouhaha: the U.S. should annex Mexico.

Tongue-in-cheek comment: Mexico has more population than Canada, but less surface area and far fewer places to hide.
