Bill Whittle has another good read in his "You Are Not Alone" essay (Part 1 & Part 2):

http://www.ejectejecteject.com/archives/000157.html

There's a power pole picture to illustrate the results of "short term gain" mentality. I think it's a perfect analogy for the Liberal Party tapping into taxpayers.

I read some really original back-handed praise for Bush and the Iraq war. It's by Scott Adams from Dilbert. He argues that the Iraq war is a success because it drew in Al Qaeda, showed them that America was too tough to beat, and then gave them an easier target to divert their attention - the Shia:

"We have the same stalker mentality situation with Al-Qaeda. Our best bet is to divert their focus to more accessible targets, just as the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan shifted their focus to us. Ironically, the civil war in Iraq might have accidentally accomplished through irrational means what good foreign policy could not. Al-Qaeda is using far more resources fighting other Muslims than fighting the U.S."

"Al-Qaeda is using far more resources fighting other Muslims than fighting the U.S."

Robert, that was happening well before Iraq, Afghan and 9/11. I do agree with you however, that we have diverted AQ gaze from Western targets. We have also given them a cause, though, and possibly a nation state, once the Democrats pull US troops out after next US election.

Macleans publishes an article about the CBC facebook contest. People have a tough time believing there are conservative youth out there.

The CPC really fumbled the ball on this one.

http://thechronicleherald.ca/Canada/840296.html

A great alternative existed. The CPC could have nailed 23 out of 32 seats in Atlantic Canada, a 15 seat improvement, not including the 5 out of 8 seats they will lose next election if nothing gets done, a 20 seat spread, for a generation or 2.

Sask and BC are also big winners under the AIMS approach. Report is 10 pages long and easy to read.

The AQ gaze could re-focus in Mexico, where the economy is 50% drug based. Mexico where the military run their own drug production schemes and police corruption is beyond control. Hugo is not far away.

The small, Carman MB town that I know well, has been traumatized by at least two sexual attacts the past month. One, in a seniors care home, a senior.

[Winnipeg-based RCMP spokesman Staff Sgt. Steve Saunders, said it’s an unfortunate reality that people need to take steps to ensure homes and other property such as vehicles, are as secure as possible.
“The day and age of leaving our homes and vehicles unlocked is long, long gone,”]

Long gone ? Why ? PET said he made us a 'just society'.

I, in 1967, met a friend in downtown Winnipeg. I parked my 67 Olds on a side street and rode with him on an errand.

Upon returning a 'couple of hours later', I could not find my keys in any pocket. At the time, I thought nothing of the fact that I may have left the keys in the ignition. The car was also unlocked, in fact the windows were also down.

As I walked up to the car I realized I had also left it running !! :)

I remember being POed cause it burnt a quarter tank of gas. Not really that surprized that down town Wpg in 1967 was almost crime free. At least compared to now.

What happened ?? Well for starters, Canada got a new PM the next year.

I can't imagine how horrific a sexual assault on a senior(anyone) would be. Nothing compared to auto theft.

In 1967, anyone caught stealing a vehicle was in big trouble. Sexual assault on a senior may have resulted in a back alley whipping.

Jean Lafleur's lawyer say he is to poor to repay the 1.5 million he stole from taxpayers. His lawyer says Lafleur should do 30 months and be forgiven. Would a joe blow get that kind of deal?? How about this thieving SOB repay the debt on a prisioners pay? And release him the moment it is payed off.

Good morning Kate,

I didn't see a Friday tip thread and thought this article was worthy of comment.

From the CBC: Quebec to collect nation's 1st carbon tax at http://www.cbc.ca/canada/montreal/story/2007/06/07/carbon-tax.html

Quebec will implement Canada's first carbon tax in October, collecting just under one cent a litre from petroleum companies in the province, which will raise about $200 million a year to pay for energy-saving initiatives such as improvements to public transit.

The tax will amount to 0.8 cents on every litre of gas sold in Quebec, and 0.9 cents on each litre of diesel fuel.

About 50 companies will be affected by the tax.

Oil companies will be hardest hit. They will pay about $69 million a year for gasoline, $36 million for diesel fuel, and $43 million for heating oil.

Natural gas distributors will pay about $39 million, while electricity distributor Hydro-Québec will pay $4.5 million for its thermal energy plant in Tracy, Que.

Natural Resources Minister Claude Béchard said Wednesday he hopes the petroleum industry will pay the tax without passing on the cost to drivers when they fill up their cars at the pump. Good luck with that!

Don't all those taxes go into the general till?

"Natural Resources Minister Claude Béchard said Wednesday he hopes the petroleum industry will pay the tax without passing on the cost to drivers when they fill up their cars at the pump. "

And he also beieves in the tooth fairy.

In short We are Bad because we wish to impose our will our values and our sense of justice on someone else.

The Victims of Communism Memorial

To be located at the busy intersection of Massachusetts and New Jersey Avenues (and 'G' Street), NW, in Washington, D.C., the Memorial will feature a statue modeled on the "Goddess of Democracy" used by the Chinese students in Tiananmen Square in 1989, that statue itself deliberately reminiscent of our own Statue of Liberty. Its inscriptions, front and back, will read as follows: "To the more than 100 million victims of Communism and to those who love liberty," and "To the freedom and independence of all captive nations and peoples."

The memorial and its lessons are long overdue.

"It is based upon the idea that the Soviets and the Chinese and the Cambodians thought that they could create a new man, and they set about it in the most ruthless way, and anybody that got in their way, they destroyed. The got caught up in this Utopian nightmare and cut down anybody who got in their way....

In truth, what's wrong with the Communist vision isn't merely the means used to achieve it, and it isn't merely the mistaken assumptions about the perfectability of man. Instead, the goals themselves -- the very life envisioned by the revolutionary dreamers -- would be a nightmare, not a Utopia, even if realized by entirely peaceful means.

DESPITE WHAT SO MANY American lefties would say even today, the vision outlined by Marx and Engels is not wonderful but terrifying. The leveling impulses itself is a mistaken one. It is evil, not Utopia, to say that all people should forfeit their individuality, their family ties, and their unique dreams in order that the material circumstances --yes, the wealth -- of all people be the same. ...-

Man who shot police officer released (Carry Permit Holder)

The man who shot and wounded an undercover Robbinsdale police officer is now out of jail, and may not be charged with any crimes.

Martin Treptow walked out of the Anoka County Jail Friday afternoon, and told reporters he shot the officer because he feared for his family's safety.

Treptow says he got into a dispute on the road with a man who turned out to be the undercover officer. He says he did not know the man was a cop.

"We're about three feet away from each other and he's pointing the gun at my wife," Treptow said. "I had to defend my family."

Treptow, who used to work as a security guard and has a permit to carry a gun, pulled his own weapon and fired.

Treptow, his wife and two children, then drove to a nearby convenience store and called police.

Police say some witnesses back up parts of Treptow's story, but the officer says it was Treptow who pulled his gun first.

Coon Rapids Deputy Police Chief Timothy Snell says both drivers could have brought the situation to a better conclusion. "I think there were points in this incident when either side could have backed off," he said.

Treptow is now free, can resume carrying a gun, and can travel anywhere he likes. ...-

For God's Sake, Please Stop

Kenyan economist James Shikwati is interviewed in Der Spiegel. And he says what many people think about the development assistance and international NGO racket but are quite afraid to say.

SPIEGEL: Mr. Shikwati, the G8 summit at Gleneagles is about to beef up the development aid for Africa...

Shikwati: ... for God's sake, please just stop.

SPIEGEL: Stop? The industrialized nations of the West want to eliminate hunger and poverty.

Shikwati: Such intentions have been damaging our continent for the past 40 years. If the industrial nations really want to help the Africans, they should finally terminate this awful aid. The countries that have collected the most development aid are also the ones that are in the worst shape. Despite the billions that have poured in to Africa, the continent remains poor.
SPIEGEL: Do you have an explanation for this paradox?

Shikwati: Huge bureaucracies are financed (with the aid money), corruption and complacency are promoted, Africans are taught to be beggars and not to be independent. In addition, development aid weakens the local markets everywhere and dampens the spirit of entrepreneurship that we so desperately need. As absurd as it may sound: Development aid is one of the reasons for Africa's problems. If the West were to cancel these payments, normal Africans wouldn't even notice. Only the functionaries would be hard hit. Which is why they maintain that the world would stop turning without this development aid.

SPIEGEL: Even in a country like Kenya, people are starving to death each year. Someone has got to help them.

Shikwati: But it has to be the Kenyans themselves who help these people. ...-

Good to see that fascist bastard Gordon Campbell get kicked in the nuts. And you, OMMAG, show what a selfish prick you are complaining that a group of people had their rights restored.

Too bad there wasn't anyone around to trump the policies and LAWS written by the government ELECTED in Germany in 1933.

"The U.S. just doesn't listen when Canada talks about Khadr."

www.thestar.com/News/article/222697

It's all the Americans' fault, eh?

Another out to lunch comment by lberia. What the f*** does a SCOC decision have to do with Hiter? Is everything about Hitler with you? Oooh, Campbell must be a "conservative" just like Hitler was, right? Wrong. Give it a rest, Campbell is one of your beloved Liberals.

BTW, Campbell was wrong to rip up legal contracts, so SCOC right to rebuke him, on this point. They enforced contract law as they should have. This is being spun as a union power type of decision, but is it? I'm no constitutional lawyer, but I don't see anywhere that this decision means governments can't contract out, they just can't do so in repudiation of an existing legal agreement.

Hey, lberia, where is your criticism of Dionsky on Senate reform. He has been told by leading constitutional experts (Monaghan in particular) that not matter for provincial assent. Senate has been "reformed" in past without consulting provinces. Senate is federal institution.

If SCOC gets involved in this one, (and they will surely side with government),I can't wait for Grit spin. Libs not even in power and still usurping parliament to maintain their privilege and unelected power.

I guess the distinction is lost on Hypogrits. Actually it isn't since they're just jockying for power with no vision to present to Canadians and not money or leader to do it with.

shamrock:

I don't like Liberals and I especially don't like the recycled SoCred variety. My comment was to OMMAG, who feels that governments can do whatever they want (especially if they're right wing governments, I suppose). Ripping up contracts is the point here, not contracting out. Nice to see you agree with me.

And nice try to do the old bait and switch to senate reform. ;>)

lberia, and that has to do with Hitler, how?

No bait, no switch, just outing your infantile references to Hitler. Get a life.

Shamrock, are you stupid? Hitler was elected, and all those nice things he did were, in fact, legal.
