Nigerial Official Falls For New Orleans Fraud Scam
Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., was indicted Monday on federal charges of racketeering, soliciting bribes and money-laundering in a long-running bribery investigation into business deals he tried to broker in Africa. The indictment handed up in federal court in Alexandria., Va., Monday is 94 pages long and lists 16 alleged violations of federal law that could keep Jefferson in prison for up to 235 years. He is charged with racketeering, soliciting bribes, wire fraud, money-laundering, obstruction of justice, conspiracy and violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
Jefferson is accused of soliciting bribes for himself and his family, and also for bribing a Nigerian official.
You may have heard of Rep. Jefferson before;
Almost two years ago, in August 2005, investigators raided Jefferson's home in Louisiana and found $90,000 in cash stuffed into a box in his freezer.[...]
The impact of the case has stretched across continents and even roiled presidential politics in Nigeria. According to court records, Jefferson told associates that he needed cash to pay bribes to the country's vice president, Atiku Abubakar.
Abubakar denied the allegations, which figured prominently in that country's presidential elections in April. Abubakar ran for the presidency and finished third.
The indictment does not name Abubakar. But it describes Jefferson's dealings with an unnamed "Nigerian Official A" who was a high-ranking official in Nigeria's executive branch who had a spouse in Potomac, Md. One of Abubakar's wives lived in that Washington suburb.
Moves are already underway for his explusion from Congress.
SDA Flashback - Rep. Jefferson enlists help of National Guard during Katrina: "Finally, according to the source, Jefferson emerged with a laptop computer, three suitcases, and a box about the size of a small refrigerator, which the enlisted men loaded up into the truck."

Dirty is as Dirty does.
He is a La politcian. Does anyone really expect anything different? There are 49 states and then there is La where even the laws of physics are different I think.
The real shame is where the MSM gave him a pass through it all. I've been listeni talk radio hosts discuss Jefferson for years now but you'd never see it on CNN, MSNBC or in the NY Times... He even got a pass through the mid-term elections (where he got re-elected). Speaker Pelosi crowed on and on about how she was cleaning the swamp of political corruption all the while knowing Jefferson was caught red handed. The DNC gave him a pass as well I guess...
Give it some time and I'm sure they'll find a way to blame bush for the indictment of this poor individual...
Richard, you are wrong, this will be Harper's fault for -give me time, I will think of a reason.
This couldn't happen to a better political party, who campaigned on Cleaning up the mess of corruption. This guy is on the Homeland Security Committee. Wonder if he was selling info to guess who.
"...The real shame is where the MSM gave him a pass through it all."
Of course they did, Jefferson's a left-winger Democrat and he's black. That gives him PC double immunity, courtesy of the Democratic Party's Ministry of Propaganda, AKA, the bulk of America's MSM.
Now if he were a white Republican...
(That shows another way in which America and Canada are similar. We both have a poisonously biased left-wing MSM that acts as a propaganda mouthpiece for the ever-more-drifting leftward Grits and Dems.)
A P.S. Now, I'll wait for one of our usual lefty trolls to call me a racist for my above remark.
First, of all, I'm not. Secondly, I'm just bluntly stating a truth. Calling me a racist would just be a variation of an ad hominem attack. If you can't defeat the message by debate, attack the messenger.)
If he were a republican all the major news rags would have it on their front page for a month or more knowing what a bunch of lowlifes the liberal left-wing news media is
This does have a comic side to it though. How many North Americans got scammed by Nigerians???
At least a Canadial official wasn't caught up in the scheme.
I kind of like Canadial. It's like a cross between Canadian and cordial or something. It sounds like it means Canadian-like.
"Thank you, that was very Canadial of you."
Maybe we can start something...

Congressional Black Caucus gives Jefferson standing ovation
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- On the same day that the 110th Democratic-led Congress convenes with a plan to immediately pass lobbyist and ethics reforms, the Congressional Black Caucus Thursday gave a standing ovation to Rep. William Jefferson, the Louisiana Democrat who faces an FBI probe into bribery allegations.
"The haters... and negative nabobs...the people who spoke against him couldn't prevail against the people who spoke for him," Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, master of ceremonies for the CBC's celebratory event, said Thursday morning.
r.e. i kept waiting to see if anything was going to be done about this . like you i had heard about it some time ago. rush tried to give it legs but the msm just ignored it. i would like to have 90k cash in my freezer.
NOLA and Louisiana have always been the corruption belt of the US...politics plays there like it does on any small 3rd world oligarchy.
Geez, in Canada we had corruption right at the top echelons of government for a decade or more.
Our "Canadian values" and an enabling MSM preclude the crooked bastards ever living on the inside of a prison where they really belonged and not in the seat of power.
You have to admit that the idea of having a politician filling his pockets (of freezer) with cash from somebody other than the taxpayer is kind of novel. Mind you a skunk doesn't get his stripes overnight so you have to wonder where he practiced his slight of hand first.
AP Did Not Identify Indicted Congressman William Jefferson as a Democrat
AP worked hard to leave out something very important but very basic in an article about Democratic US Representative William Jefferson’s 16-count bribery indictment. What the AP left out was any identification of Jefferson’s party affiliation. In almost 30 paragraphs, no where is there any hint of what party Jefferson belongs to, not even a “(D-LA).” ...-

When a politician is in trouble and the party is not identified, it a safe bet to assume that the missing letter is a Big “D,” as in this AP piece.
How were other politicians identified? Nancy Pelosi is identified as “Pelosi, D-Calif.” John Boehner is identified as “House Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio.” But Jefferson is not a Democrat, just “Louisiana congressman William Jefferson.” Strange how that works, huh?
Not only did the AP leave out the embarrassing fact that a group that is touted as the most ethical Congress ever just had a Democrat indicted for bribing foreign governmental officials, the AP also failed to mention that even as recently as February 17 of this year, long after the investigation was made public, Pelosi appointed Jefferson to the security-sensitive House Homeland Security Committee, where members have access to vital national secrets and make policy for national defense.
Are they so biased that the AP can’t even include party affiliation when it makes the Democratic party look bad?
*One of the reporters who wrote the article, Lara Jakes Jordan is married to Jim Jordan, long-time Democratic operative. Jordan is a former John Kerry presidential campaign manager, former executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, a former John Kerry presidential campaign manager and staffer of America Coming Together, a 527 funded by George Soros and labor unions which was a pro-Kerry organization which focused on defeating Bush. ...-
