The outcome is likely to leave Sarkozy with substantial political control, much like the sweeping powers Charles de Gaulle enjoyed with his hallmark strong presidency."I'm depressed - I voted for the Socialists purely because the right is going to win," said Geraldine Gourbe, a 30-year-old philosophy professor, on her way out of a polling station in northern Paris.
"I voted for them to be effective, but I'd rather have voted for the Greens or the Communist Revolutionary League," she said, concerned that those parties' candidates stood less of a chance of gaining seats.
The composition of Sarkozy's Cabinet and its ability to push through legislation is tied to the number of seats the mainstream right holds.
Labor unions and student groups are ready to mount strikes and protests if they deem that Sarkozy wants to go too far in trying to trim France's welfare state protections.

People will only be pushed so far before they start pushing back. This is just a start, more and more European countries will begin electing governments that lean right.
I predict an increased demand for firehoses in France.
This is what will happen as soon as first laws are passed in their parliament.
Strike, strike, strike. The socialists and communists have stranglehold on French unions and will bring the French government to its knees. There is no doubt about that, no way, no how, zero. They did this to De Gaulle and will do this to Sarkozy. Once you get a free ride and take it, you sell your soul to the devil so to speak. Watch for the biggest unrest since De Gaulle’s time.

I'm glad they published the philosophy professor's opinion - it was a great laugh.
Maybe France woke up. We'll see. Cracking those unions is going to be hard, but necessary. Lots of pain, but the gain will be impressive if they hold in there.
And the world MSM are busy dragging out every two bit media whore they can find to tell us why this is a bad thing.

I sincerly hope they have indeed woke up. When I toured the Canadian battlefields in Normandy, Dieppe and Vimy in 2000, the people of France could have given lessons in hosptiality. I genuinly liked the French people. The ones I met deserve better than what they have gotten in the last few years.

Maybe France has finally yanked itself back from the edge of the abyss. And Bolshevik is right, look for the labour movement to flex their muscles. Sarkozy had better prepare the Army for some home defense duty.

Communists in Power in France...
...look at the post war history of france, they ALMOST did take power, having something like 47% of the vote. It's why that side of my family left the country. And it's why the unions are so strong.
Yep. It's going to be long summer and fall and winter in France with lots of manifestations/ protests/ etc... Lot's of VERY comfortable unions in key sectors of the economy are going to see their oxes gored.
Cheer up Geraldine ... you probably have a socialist president. He mentioned "global warming" in his first speech and seemed to be signing on to Eurabia too. Hoping not!
If Sarkozy is going to make a dent in the rot that stagnates France, he better act on his mandate and do it fast. It was why Reagan and Thatcher were so successful. The law of diminishing returns takes hold quickly in politics.
Geraldine is tenured and on the education dole for life no doubt. She reflects the majority of lefty liberal arts goofs that infest the world's campuses. "I'm depressed"....another vacuous lib feeling their way through issues and life.
The funniest thing , for those of us who watch French News, like TV5, is those interviews:
"A great "conservative" victory...we take you know the the Communist Party HQ for on the street interviews....." And then, after 5 interviews with them, we take you to some flavour of socialist party to intervew 5 more, then 2.5 seconds view of the victory party over at Sarkozy's party HQ and a 1 sec interview from one of them....

I would hope that Quebec is paying close attention to the path that France is taking. After all, they have been touting the French system as a model for thier own for decades and using it as an reason (excuse?) for thier political and economic expectations.
