So,if they yearn to die and hope for a martyr's death I think we should keep them alive as a pitiful abject lesson to the rest that whewnever possible we will ensure that they die an ignoble cows death.

I have a very non PC solution to the IEDs in Afgan, and it would help all pig farmers in Canada and the US, plus help save the environment. Ship all the contents of lagoons etc from all hog farms, using CSL ships, to Afghan. Bring in some water bombers and spray all the roads. Smelly but effective. Why isn't there some pigskin in uniforms. Love the threat of burying parts of bombers in pig offal.

There are many topics posted on this site that can get this old curmudgeon agitated, but if you really want to get my blood boiling, mention any member of the Khadr family. They all need to be deported back to Egypt where I am sure the authorities will know what to do with them.

Given that Khadr was captured in Afghanistan, IF and when he is released, he should be repatriated to Afghanistan. Implant a GPS tracker in his dense little skull, fly him to Kabul or Kandahar, then chopper him to Taliban-infested territory. When he meets up with his leaders, launch a cruise missile targeted to home in on said GPS tracker.

In other words, use him as a Judas goat.
