We are already paying billions of dollars in taxes directly and indirectly on the use of fossil fuels. Where is that money going now and where is the assurance that any 'new' taxes will not end up in the same black hole of general revenue?
Tied or dedicated taxation for politicians of any stripe is anathema- the end of the world as they know it. They will never give up the power to determine which dollar gets spent where, regardless of where that dollar is raised.
It is not the fault of the fossil fuel industry that the billions (trillions worldwide?) raised in the production, transportation, refining and consumption of fossil fuels does not get spent on mitigating whatever harm the use of fossil fuels do.

As a construction contractor, may I just mention that every time the price of fuel goes up, it costs me a lot of money, and I have to try to pass it on to the client. Bicycling with 36 foot ladders and a thousand pounds of equipment makes it a bit difficult.

Even if Kyoto is enacted 100% by all countries its not prejected to reduced the increase in temperature by much more than 10% - in essence nothing will change.

So what's the big deal? The disaster is still going to happen Kyoto or not.

A brief synopsis on accounting, there are operating costs (day-to-day expenses) and capital costs (long-term investments in equip. etc.). All we ever hear about is the exhorbitant profits Imperial, PetroCanada et al make, nobody discusses how much money these companies had to expend to get there.

As an investor we all want a way to turn $1 into $2, if you invest in an oil company there return on capital means you are more likely to turm a $1 into a $$1.04, not exactly what we all want. Before you call me any names, remember the two biggest institutional investors in Canada are UNION Pension Funds (Ont. Teachers & Ont. Municipal Employees)

Pollution is a problem in large urban and industrialized areas and can through technology be cleaned up. That's it. No bloody way should we send money for something called carbon credits to China or anywhere. It does nothing to clean up environmental pollution, it increases it and enables them to continue to pollute.

Kyoto is the biggest freaking scam in the history of the planet. Money grab plain and simple and Lizzie wants to tax gas even more? Maybe she should take a leap over the cliff.

Here's a quick comment/question. I heard someone on the radio talking about ghg emmissions and Canada. He pointed out what Canada's ghg emmissions are, but then pointed out that a lot of these are offset by our large forested areas across the country.

Perhaps someone has the knowlede to figure out what percentage is offset.

Since the only really significant green house gas is water vapour, the forests are both offsetters and contributors. The contribution of CO2 to any greenhouse gas effect is trivial, and human greenhouse gase emissions are a fraction of even that.

Is May actually suggesting Canada, at 2% of total worldwide anthropogenic CO2 emissions, should increase energy costs 10% in one fell swoop. Typical lefty, let's destroy economic activity, that would be good for environment. Let's look at Russia for their stellar record. Or the permanent pollution cloud around Bejing (oh yeah, at least it's not CO2, just deadly carbon monoxide, lead, radon, etc).

Noticed opposition parties are panning her move. Why, because it's was too early for any of opposition to come "clean" as to costs of Kyoto, and therefore refuse to issue their "plan" until they get needed cover from MSM in a short election campaign. 12 cents is going to make a difference??? The price of gas went up 24 cents at my local pump over the last two months and nobody stopped driving. And if you raise the taxes on my gas but lower it on my income as she proposes, they cancel each other out. I'll have more money to pay the extra cost for the gas, so why would I use less??? What has she been smoking???

I can't see any problem with what may proposes so long dion's dog kyoto agrees.

What happens to Mr. NDP if he supports the idea of increasing fuel taxes? Wasn't he, not so long ago, demanding lower taxes on fuel?

You would be issued a "Kyoto Kard" and every time you buy gas, pay your heat bill, or take an airplane flight, you can have the Kyoto tax added on.
