Angus Reid says that Canadians want the Green Party to win a seat in Parliament:

Many adults in Canada would like the Green party to have representation in the House of Commons, according to a poll by Angus Reid Strategies. 58 per cent of respondents think it is important for the country to have a Green party member of Parliament. -- AR

This may be the case, but I'm pretty sure it's only for the entertainment value. Elizabeth May is such a complete whackjob that she probably has plenty of older Canadians feeling nostalgic for the Rhino Party.

I wouldn't mind the Greens having a seat or two in parliament, but only at the expensive of Layton's "socialist horde".

If nothing else they'd provide some comedy relief.

my favourite Rhino party campaign promise was they were going to hold the price of canned dogfood so that pensioners would have something to eat.

Great Sean !! Striking comparison to the Greens. And the Kyoto Kult. Now we know where it all came from.

I remember the Rhinos --- people were truly voting for the entertainment factor only. Most would have been been horrified if some were actually elected.

Most. But not all. A small group is active in the Greens and some in the Liberal party also.

Was Dion involved in the RP ??

The Rhinoceros Party - damn I miss them.

Of course, it should be noted that it is highly unlikely that the Green Party could ever achieve the entertainment levels provided by the Natural Law Party and it's bevy of Yogic Flyer buffoons. :)

When the Rhino party unvieled thier platform many years ago in Saskatoon they called for an increase in rail lines by 50%. Adding a third track made sense then and still does. It's at least better than cutting down CO2 by getting rid of all humans.
It's a lovely day in the nieghbourhood....

This is stupid. If Canadians want Green Party representation, then there's a simple solution. VOTE FOR THEM. They are on the ballot in 307 ridings.

Right on, john g! Of course, here in the USA, we have the RINO party.
Same solution. Vote. While you still can.

The last thing we need is another party in the Monty Python farce we call our parliament. Single agenda Parties are usually so concentrated on their narrow vision for fixing what they see as the biggest problem, they have no idea of the consequences of the actions they propose. Sometimes they sound like they don't know there are consequences for any new laws passed by government.

We could use a two Party system in Canada, and fringe groups would be obliged to chose the one whose platform is closest to their preferences. They could then push their beliefs from within a viable political entity, that has a realistic chance of forming Government.

But, no, the Canadian Way is to allow every group the illusion that they are doing something "meaningful", whereas in reality, they have little influence, and are mostly a nuisance factor in Parliament and during debates.

I've never been more disgusted than when we had to endure Paul Martin kissing Jack Layton's socialist behind to cling to power. The Lib/Dips should merge with the Greens, then all left wingers would be under the same roof.

So 49% of the respondents don't know what the Green Party stands for but they still think it's a good idea for them to be in Parliament?

Either that poll is out to lunch, or the Canadian public is retarded... hmmmmm

What an insightful post...at least Kate puts substance into hers......

and dmorris the Greens are closer to the old PC party more than any other party, which makes them far from being "left wing"...that is unless you are suggesting that the environment is a "left wing" thing....

Best of the Rhinos;

" Stop pumping oil out of the Earth because it turns and anything that turns has bearings."

I am sure the 'Suzuki types' back then liked the 'stop using oil part', as in back-to-the-cave, but was a little far fetched, even for them.

So when Mann "produced" his ficticious 'hockey stick' graph and the UN "thought-up" the IPCC --- VOILA !!! Old hippies and old Rhinos can now run on the anti CO2 platform.

Nothing is new :)

Watch out for radical greens they would wreck canada for nothing but a rediclous ideology of their silly green utopias

Sean

Quoting Vaclav Klaus - Czek President

"What is at stake is not the climate but freedom. I see the greatest threat to freedom, democracy, and prosperity now in ambitious environmentalism, not in communism. This idology wants to replace free and spontaneous evolution of mankind by a sort of central (now global) planning."

This from a man who knows 'central planning' and its consequences very well.

Left-wing, indeed.

I voted GREEN back when they had that "guy in a suit" as leader (Harris?). At least he made some sense.
Since E.May came round the loons are loose.

This poll sounds like a NIMBY. Yeah we want ONE, but not in my riding!

I think what can be taken from this poll is Cdn's want greens in parliament so long as they themselves are not represented by them. Just like the left's 'commitment' to Kyoto: "Sure as long as I don't have to do anything".

Sean... Maybe you should tell Ms. May she is right wing....

I don't think she knows that by the way she talks about evil Harper being Bush's lapdog and the conservative "hidden" "far right" "mean spirited" agenda.

Nobody thinks of the BLOC, which was formed initially from defectors from Mulroney's PC party, as right wing either.

Maybe many Canadians want Green rep in HofC. They don't seem to want to vote for them. More contradictions from these push-pull polls that, between elections are meaningless.

Let write in Kermit as the green representative.

60% won't vote for a Green candidate, but, 58% think it's important to have one in Parliament.

To arrive at that, the poll had to be constructed in a totally dumb way.

"that is unless you are suggesting that the environment is a "left wing" thing....

The environment as an issue left the realm of science and reason quite a while back and has morphed into the left's new religion. Are you really not noticing how politicized "the environment" issue has become and just who the hysterical synchophants are?

Get real.

So the Rhino's once appointed the only unilingual Anglo in the party as their official translater. Now I know where Dion got his start!

Given what we now know about how the big majority of reporters are closet liberals, you have to wonder if the same is true of pollsters. I mean this poll question is silly. It's like asking, do you want your neighbor's disabled kid to be able to play with all the other children ? Well duh.

Anyway, I can see Elizabeth May pointing to this poll as further "proof" that she should be included in the Leader's debates. Hopefully the media will tell her to elect an MP first, same rules as applied to all previous Party leaders.

Hey - what a fun poll! How can Angus Reid conclude that 'many Canadians'(58%) want a Green member of parliament when more than that percentage wouldn't vote for the Green member in their own riding (60%). And, 49% have no idea what the Green Party stands for.

That means that if not all, then, a fair proportion of our Canadian public want something about which they haven't a clue, and which they refuse to vote for.

Reasoning is fun, isn't it.

"Let write in Kermit"

Ha!

...and

- Ms. Piggy can be Canada's Finance Minister.
- Animal can be Multicultural Minister
- Big Bird can be ?
- Garbage can muppet: ?
- Bird with bent beak: ?

Finally in all fairness, Mr. Dressup can be our Education Minister.

- Mr. Rogers?

gonzo, that's the bird one.

Polls are just material for Media headlines, "news" channels. They do not have to be factual. Just like the headlines themselves.

Has anyone, anywhere, ever seen actual polling data ??? A list of those selected to be "polled" ??

These questions have been asked many times. In comments, emails, letters, ect.

We also know 'media types' frequent sites such as this, so why the deafening SILENCE from them ??

I suspect that many of the same people who would like to see a Greenie in the House of Commons would be the same ones who would support a party that wanted to ban dihydrogen monoxide.

dmorris: "We could use a two Party system in Canada."

I'm not sure there's a difference in principle between enforcing a two-party system and enforcing a one-party system. (But perhaps you don't advocate enforcing it. I would hope not.)

The Americans have a two-party system and there is so little difference between the parties they are very close to being a one-party state. I wouldn't like to see us go that route! We have little enough choice as it is.

Had a look at the poll data.

Its almost like the poll was sponsored by the Greens by the way it was headlined.

What caught my eye first was that this was done online.
Online by whom?
So Angus-Reid notifies by email a bunch of folks that they already have a profile on and the best they can get for Sister Lizzy-May the Mother Superior of the Church of Kyoto is a measley percentile which is less than the undecided's of that poll.

My headline for that poll would be "Green Leader not making headway with electorate, rumours of leadership coup persist".

Sure "a" member of parliament; most Canadians are generous types who don't kick puppies, and don't want to deny anybody one seat. Interesting to see what the numbers would be if they asked about more than one.

OT: but velly intellesting.

Thanks Yank

ENOUGH! Enough of the meddling manipulating pollsters, they should all be banned.

Who needs pollsters to tell us how others are voting or how they feel about any given topic?
Dammit, if we can't take time to figure out what we think on any topic or are incapable we've no business voting for any party. What others think is irrelevant and we never know how the questions are rigged to get desired results. Pollsters have clients who pay for the "right" results.

dunno Liz J..... I don't think 1% voter turnout is all that desireable. And I would be surprised if that many people were genuinely informed on the issues of the day. Most of us (including me) learn about issues from the media, the blogs, etc. Colored by other peoples perceptions. And a few do some research on a few topics of their own interest. How many do research on everything they here to find out what the whole story is??

Ignoring our First-Past-The-Post electoral system and thinking in terms of proportional representation, I can see how those being polled would like to see their popular support translating to seats in the Gong Show (oops I mean Parliament). If such a thing were to happen within the existing system be very afraid.

The "Green" Party is an unaccountable coalition of Junk-science promoters, watermelons and feel-good twits. Giving them power is exactly like handing over the asylum keys to the inmates.

However, as long as they continue to pull votes away from the NDP and Liberals, they serve a somewhat useful purpose.

New Green Slogan:

KERMIT FOR PRIME MINISTER!!

That should give Stephane Dion some competition with the predictable jokes on the Green/Liberal alliance.

Thus the Conservatives can play the AXIS powers, and the Greens/Liberals can play the ALLIES. Oh joy, what great fun.

Recall that in the animal kingdom; animals that eat frogs for snacks include snakes, lizards, birds, and various small animals like hedgehogs.

So we can have a political animal kingdom face off of the HEDGEHOGS vs FROGS.

Hence we have the Parliamentary version of "Animal Farm" given its full zoological flower.

Noah would be proud!

Perhaps it is a good thing that the first day of summer fun has arrived. Hope the sun arrives soon as it is FUN DAY for the kids at school.

Green Part?? Why? Ontario Greener than Green.

This week, the Ontario government announced a $610 million fund to develop a green technology industry and attract carmakers and solar panel makers. Municipalities will also be able to dip into a separate $206 million fund for retrofitting buildings.

Additionally, the province has unfurled programs that eliminate sales tax on Energy Star-rated lightbulbs and appliances for a year, offer homeowners up to about $4,689 to install energy-efficient appliances, and set a goal to see 100,000 homes go solar. A pilot program will also extend zero-interest loans to homeowners who install renewable energy systems. These build on other programs designed to increase solar power demand.

Overall, Ontario wants to reduce greenhouse gas levels to 6 percent below 1990 levels by 2014, 15 percent below those levels by 2020, and 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.

Unlike Manitoba, which has a surplus of hydroelectric power, Ontario faces an energy problem. The province needs about 30,000 megawatts of energy capacity, said a representative for the Ontario Power Authority. That figure will rise to 36,000 megawatts over the next 20 years. At the same time, about 8,000 megawatts of coal plants will be decommissioned.

Under the government's plan, it will try to save 6,300 megawatts through conservation and find 15,000 through renewable energy. Most of the remainder will come from nuclear power. Coal, which accounts for 20 percent of Ontario's power now, will be phased out. [Coal = 1/5th!]

On the roads, mass transit will increase: nearly $1.6 billion will be spent on railroads in the Toronto area.

*These programs build on our government's efforts to make Ontario the center of the green economy in North America,* Energy Minister Dwight Duncan said in a statement.

What concrete policy has Elizabeth May ever framed other than gaining power? = TG

(But perhaps you don't advocate enforcing it. I would hope not.)"

Of course not, exile. I'd rather see two parties, and lots of Independants.

But think back to Monty Python's famous "Election Special" skit, Silly party, Slghtly Silly Party, Very Silly Party, etc.

That's what our electoral process has become, a farce, with, in my riding, nine candidates on the ballot, most from fringe Parties that have zero chance of ever electing a single member. All they do is cause confusion as you try to find your candidate on the cluttered ballot.

If you MUST have a say in politics, you are better off joining one of the mainstream Parties, and showing up at all the riding ass'n meetings, you'd be surprised at how much influence you can have.

For so many of the fringe candidates, running for office is for vanity's sake. No one takes them seriously, but, if you ever see their resumes, they always state boldly, "candidate for the "Whatever" Party in the 2006 election. The fact that the "candidate" garnered 37 out of 26,000 votes cast is not mentioned.

If so many people want the Greens in parliament, why are there no Green members?

And they didn't ask me, so how valid can the poll be?

Fortunately no one who thinks they should have a seat will actually vote for them.

How about that, the Enviro-Freaks are out planting trees and "Scientists" are now saying trees do not remove substantial amounts of the pollution from the air.

Does that mean we're in worse trouble than we thought? Maybe the fact we've been Gored and Suzkookied isn't all for naught after all. We better be afraid, very afraid.

Its all relative. Northern forests do soak up co2, otherwise they couldn't grow. They just soak up more sunshine and supposedly help warm the atmosphere, by a few hundredths of a degree, so its not much to worry about.

Barcs, please don't lump blogs in with the media. At least Kate, Sean, Stephen Taylor, etc. maintain no claim to objectivity.

"What an insightful post...at least Kate puts substance into hers......"

That's my motto: Great taste and less filling.

Ok, seriously, I'm not Kate and don't claim to be. I'm merely an invited guest blogger who is trying to make sure that there is fresh content up for Kate's readers while she is traveling. This is done out of respect for Kate.

She'll be back in a few more days and you won't have to put up with me after that.

"If you MUST have a say in politics, you are better off joining one of the mainstream Parties, and showing up at all the riding ass'n meetings, you'd be surprised at how much influence you can have."

Er, yeah. And Bill Casey's constituents may have helped influence him out of the Conservative party. I liked the old Reform policy of letting MPs vote their conscience. Of course, it helps that most Reform MPs *had* a conscience. I'm not entirely sure this is the case with the current crop of numbskulls.

forests neither soak up or release CO2 they are neutral. they soak up CO2 and then they die,rot and release it, (cue in - the circle of life) The forest cycle is about 70 to 100 years. If you want to soak up CO2 , cut down the forest and store it where it cant rot.

Hydro dams are C02 releasers as they cause the flooded areas to rot and release but do not regrow.

I would like to tell this face to face to Dr. Bono Suzuki , but I might get poked with the unruly chin hairs.

Sean...don't worry about Sean S. Most of us see no problem with your guest posting. Maybe Sean S. is a little jealous, "green" with envy?
So according to the the High Princess of Gaia, we have to kill most,if not all,use of fossil fuels? Fine by me, but won't my burning 3 cords of wood at -25 to -40 from Dec-Mar sorta kill of any gain made? When these Kyoto/Green Kultists start talking nuclear, I may listen. Otherwise...PPPFFFFTTT.
And for you Kultists, trees are NOT fossil fuels. Real fossil trees(as in rock) don't burn worth a darn.

I've lost a lot of respect and have no sympathy for the people of the Atlantic Provinces.
Equalization is not a one-way street.

the MSM has to report what the people of ontario think of equalization since they finance most of it. Alberta being second.

because of equalization quebec can give a tax break and finance daycare that ontario cant afford.

like the left leg of a negro, it aint fair and it aint right.

As a former Rhino candidate (1980, Winnipeg Fort Garry) all I can say is "I resemble that remark!"

But really, comparing the Greens to Rhinos makes Baby Jesus (and the baby Rhinos) cry.

Ontario Government and Municipalities set a goal to see 100,000 homes go solar with 816 million tax dollars! How can these dregs of humanity Ontarians elect be that stupid. Trust them to spend money on the worst, WORST technology.

Here are the facts about energy efficiency:

* Groundsource Geoexchange @ 300 to 400% efficiency.

*Oil furnace @ 60% efficiency

*Gas furnace @ 70% efficiency

*Electric furnace @ 100% efficiency

*Wind turbines @ 17 to 23% efficiency

*commercially available solar cells @ 5 to 19% efficiency
