how sad, how true :(

So true Kate, so true.

Very very good comment/analysis!

On a huge 22% voter turnout.

Certainly the MSM should read lots and lots into this by-election.

Beware what is happening ED!

It appears the socialist hordes from the east are diluting Albertan conservatism and casting their votes in Calgary the same as they did " at back to home."

All with the help of the unofficial campaign manager--Mayor Dave!!

That made me laugh so hard, my husband is calling the paramedics. Oh, wait, no, he's calling Pizza 73. Now I see why Kate rules, it's all about the truth.

heh heh - that's about it. The local papers are full of crow but in small print at the very boring bottom they note nobody showed up

It was a protest vote. The liberals actually received less votes this time and won. Most conservatives stayed home. I predict that this riding will go back Conservative next election.

The vote, the way it turned out is because Dinning lost the leadership race. He lives in the riding and obviously the neighborhood did not appreciate the loss so they stayed home.
On the other hand the liberal Bronco is quite popular with the locals so he helped out the liberal candidate.
Ralph was and is a practical kind of guy, not much liberal and not much conservative. I worked for him on his first run for an MLA and I know him.

mayor dave ran for the federal libs under paul martin and ralph klein was a liberal back in the early 80's when he was first elected mayor. so maybe there is hope for bronco..

Yet another WTF moment! Good one.

The former Premier/Liberal was pretty surly when asked for a comment.

Actually, they are all pretty much the same anyway. All politicians.

Well the "big" win was noted in the HOC by the Official Opposition with great glee. The media are trying to make a story but it isn't really flying.

Maybe the desperate Liberals will have a better summer if they can keep Dion away from the hot dog stands. Too much baggage to have to carry his own cutlery.

Just imagine if Harper had eaten a hot dog with a knife and fork, the media would still be on it and all newspapers would be loaded with cartoons. To say nothing of the Lefty TV "Comedy" shows, "This hour has 22 minutes" and "Air Farce",(it's a farce all right).
Gimme strength!

Yanni has a point, to some degree they are all the same because the Left has infiltrated our education systems from top to bottom, created many dependents and grew the socialist industry. Even the Conservatives have to bend Left to get elected.

We're seeing a real example of damage the Left can wield with the Eastern Provinces fighting us, the ROC, over the so-called Atlantic Accord and the pathetic fool running Saskatchewan getting in on the act.
The East has been living on the dole for years, now they don't need it but still want it, don't want to share. Nice people, NOT! Team players, NOT!
It appears those constantly at the teet just don't know when they have enough. Gorged to the gills and want more.

Read the Accord and the other option, superb deals. What is wrong with their frigging heads?

I guess they figure they should vote for a real self proclaimed liberal instead of a liberal wannabe...rhight Mr. ED?

LizJ. It's pure politics, with a partisan bent. Premiers are trying to use feds as whipping boys to divert attention from their shortcomings as leaders. If the Opposition can usurp the powers of the federal government, I guess some premiers feel they have a right to interfere too.

An unbelievable backward bunch of whiners.

Easterners take Klein's seat,hohoho

How about this, N.B's Irving's can supply U.S energy needs at a reasonable price, ahahaha.

Alberta real workers heading home to the NEW Atlantica arrangement with the U.S.A.

Too bad to be landlocked eh?

Question!:What landlocked country is well off?
Afghanistan?
Best way to destroy a country, make enemies.
And you made em, enjoy.

Hey Ceasar you mix angel dust with your corn flakes this morning?

Ceasar....WTF was on your bran this morning? Crack? Or were you just being sarcastic and all this izzy monies out here made me miss it after 16 hours of work?

Calgary was peed off that Dinning didn't win the premiership. Jim Dinning lives in this riding.
Any connection. Conservatives stayed home in droves. By-elections are really protest votes to send a message. Klein was a liberal in conservative clothing. Winning by only 780 votes, and the libs think this is a safe seat. Wait till the prov election. If the new guy is any good, he will win again, and it will be his win, not the libs. What was the percentage of voter turnout.

Hell,Why all you people being so nice to me.

I mean I can do an 8 hour job in 16 hours too even without that stuff in my serial.

How are those buildings, my son went out there with his crew to erect, doing in Stoney Plains?

Do you know any good men he could get,so he wouldn't have to take his own from here ?
Let Wes know if you do.

Huh?

there hasn't been a conservative party in alberta for better than 3 years!

The Tories made a big mistake in selecting Stelmach as leader. He's weak. They needed a reinvigorated party, not an entrenchment of the old-boy establishment.

They've been in power for almost 40 years and the arrogance and complacency of these guys is unbelievable. Worse yet, they're spending money like they're the NDP or something. Pork barrel electioneering and back room deals are all too common. I agree with "the bear" - we haven't had a conservative party here for several years.

I only wish the provincial Liberals weren't called the "Liberals". Even though a change is needed, I can't bring myself to vote for them. Suppose that's why so many stayed at home.

Belisaurius, you could not be more wrong about Alberta's new Premier. I work directly for him (i.e., I am part of "the establishment") and I can assure you I am neither old, nor a boy.

As for arrogance, I have known many politicians in my time, and Ed Stelmach is as far from arrogant as they get. And don't make the mistake of thinking him weak. Rather, he is keenly intelligent and determined to do what is right for Albertans.

As a Calgarian, I can tell you, many people here feel the new Stelmach government has all but written off Calgary in favour of the rural vote. I don't expect the Liberals to gain a majority of the Calgary seats in the next election, but 6 to 8 is not out of the question.

Calgarians are no doubt being swayed by the likes of Herald columnist Rick Bell and their Mayor, both of whom will bash Stelmach regardless of what he does. Calgary voters are quite savvy, so I am confident they will eventually get past this agenda-driven rhetoric and see the Premier as what he is... a decent, fair leader who values all areas of the province equally.

I stand by my original statement. Stelmach is weak. I've been completely underwhelmed by his performance to date.

The biggest problem I have is the ridiculous growth in spending. The resource bonanza won't continue forever, but right now we're living for the moment like drunken sailors. Where's the long-term plan? Where's the restraint?

I don't care for Mayor Bronconcrete's constant bleating, but at least he appears passionate about his city.

Stelmach looks like a kind, decent man in over his head, embarrassed to be in the spotlight. A manager - not a leader.

"Calgary was peed off that Dinning didn't win the premiership. Jim Dinning lives in this riding."

Nonsense, after Dinnings statements just a week before the leadership convention, there is no way that Dinning could have kept the PC party united. Mind you, he would attract some votes from the Liberals. Hmmmm.

Stelmach seems to be working much better with Mandel in Edmonton so is it the province our Calgary's mayor that is the problem? Since Bronconnier inserted himself into the byelection, its probably only fair for the PCs to return the favor in the upcoming mayoralty race this fall.

I don't understand the complaints of fellow Calgarians. Stelmach is apparently weak but at the same time he isn't throwing money at Calgary fast enough. Calgarians are just getting tired of traffic, construction, and higher prices and are looking for the easiest scapegoat.

Just one more example of a loss rather than a win.

Stelmach reminds me of a deer in the headlights, and unfortunately Albertans are going to be the loosers. To me he is the essence of indescisive. He stumbles around looking not for just words but for policies and direction.

I firmly believe that the provincial PCs will be looking for a new leader sooner rather than later. But it may aready be too late to reinvigorate themselves as evidenced by the recent leadership race which was a farce.

CRB

As a staunch conservative voter and political junkie living in Alberta I can only add - Ed who???? The premier of AB reminds me of Stifle DeYawn a bad compromise between two factions of the same party that really don't like each other.
