Photo 1 = Northbound Deerfoot, 300-ish meters north of 32nd.
Photo 2 = Eastbound Glenmore 20-ish meters east of Macleod TR...
Wow! Now that is damn fine news photography.
Just the perfect lighting time for best effect.

Heh...Kate, I lived in Calgary for a few years('68 to "87)and saw my share of weird weather...but I'm now just back from checking on my boat, moored on the Fraser river...the water is 22 feet higher than normal...there are 90 foot trees floating down in the current, as well as assorted jetsam & flotsam (whatever the hell those terms mean)...point being...as an experienced Mariner, I'm seeing things in our waters that I have never seen before....
I blame Algore and Dr. Fruitfly....
During the fires of 2003 in Kelowna our beloved media was "reporting" that "leading" scientists were "predicting" that all of BC forests would burn because of a man-made-global-warming induced drought.
When ?? After the trees stop floating down the river ??
Can't wait for Layton,Dion,and Lizzie May to somehow link this to the tar sands,and bad Alberta with it's pro-conservative base!Let the spin begin.
I too lived in Alta in mid 70's..saw lots of bizarre weather..snow one day in spring,heat wave next few days,tennis ball sized hail..yet I loved your province,and if not for ties here in Man.would love to return.
Hope no one was hurt/drowned? We had a similar rainstorm flood in Saskatoon 24 years ago this month, in which a young woman drowned in a flooded underpass.
jetsam & flotsam:
Todays Vocabulary lesson is in session:
Both are terms that refer to "stuff that came from a ship"
Jetsam: stuff that was jettisoned (i.e. Thrown off the boat) presumably to lighten the load or make sure whatever you throw doesn't go down with the ship.
Flotsam: Stuff that floats to the surface on its own when the ship goes down.
Used casually for all the general junk you find floating in the water whenever humans and weather intersect.
I lived in Calgary for 13 years (1991-2004) and I saw all sorts of weird weather. I saw snow in every month of the year (in different years), even snow during the Calgary Stampede one year. I played soccer in 20C weather near the end of January, 1992. And I've seen stretches of 6 weeks or more of -40C weather, wasn't that fun. Ah well, if you don't like Calgary weather, wait five minutes.
Climate change? Not a problem.
And you are correct Crabgrass! Especially since the climate is supposed to change as it has done since an atmosphere first formed on the planet a couple billion years back.
Good Catch!
PS, it is spelled "beelzebub"
Every time this happens, the city flood control canals that dump into Chestermere lake put the lake up to the doorsteps of the people who have the lake front property...wonder if they got more than their toes wet this time??
Lottsa damage to those 50% over priced lake front shacks i bet u.
So crabgrass...you mean if it wasn't for global warming this would have been snow?
Should Calgarians be pleased or dissappointed about that?
Jim: "PS, it is spelled 'Beelzebub'"
Thanks - I was aware of that. But, as PMSH strikes me as "Bubba-like", I thought that the fusing of the names made sense.
vf - the consequence of climate change is more complicated than each region on earth slowly getting warmer.
Awwww BS....flash floods like this have hit Calgary every 3-4 years since the place was an RCMP fort. I lived through at least 8 myself..as the other poster said..In Calgary if you stay long enough, you will see snow in every month of the year and you will wear a tee shirt in every month of the year...it's a matter of living at 3800 feet above sea level and living in the trough where warm wet pacific currents meet the polar express winds....wheather changes are dramtic and swift on the alberta side of the rockey mountin trench
climate change cop outs are for people who can't cope with Calgary weather ;-)
"vf - the consequence of climate change is more complicated than each region on earth slowly getting warmer."
It is also "complicated" to predict weather that rolls in from the Rocky Mountains. It's the curse of living near the scenery.
The flooding shown in the photos is also the result of digging underpasses with drainage that simply couldn't keep up with the cloudburst that occured on Tue night. Heck, the front entrance of the hospital got flooded and it's on a hilltop! None of the drains could keep up with the downpour we got.
These kinds of freak weather events have been occuring in Calgary and southern Alberta ever since I moved here over twenty-five years ago. No doubt some enviro-wacko with no memory will try to make hay out of it, but it's just life as usual in Cowtown.
A little tidbit of trivia that may not be known about the 88 winter Olympic in Calgary. In the closing ceremonies white sand was used in McMahon stadium so on camera it would look like snow. There wasn't any snow in the city but there was plenty in the mountains. Some of the daytime high temps recorded during the event were close to +20 C. Since the closing ceremonies were held later in the day it was much cooler and the people in the stands were dress appropriately. It is not unusual to have swings of more than 20 degrees in a few hours in the winter months.
I've lived here for 45 years and still haven't got used to the weather, hope I never do.
If the goracle stopped after inventing the internet and hadn't gone on to invent global warming, none of this would have happened.
Arrest the goracle for war crimes and try him in france!
25 yrs in Cowtown
Yes snow, rain, hail (called weather) any month
Rode Motorcycle Christmas Day 2005
Froze heels walking to work in the 90's
48 hrs after the dump, the sump is still pumping groundwater, near Peter's on 16th Ave (Hwy 1)
crabgrass, if you wanted to fuse them, swap the Z and the L
Beelzebubba should be Beezlebubba
It's Bee-zel-bubba not beal-za-bubba.
If you're gonna insult Harper as some sort of moron, at least don't make yourself look worse.
So, Crabgrass, let me get this straight...
- If it rains, it's because of global warming;
- If it doesn't rain, it's because of global warming;
- If it snows, it's because of climate change;
- If it doesn't snow, it's because of global warming;
- If it is hot, it's because of global warming;
- If it is cold, it's because of climate change;
- If there are lots of hurricanes, it's because of global warming;
- If there are few hurricanes, it's because of climate change; and
- etcetera and ad nauseum.
Did I get that right? Now the question I have is...is the fact that the Ducks won the Stanley Cup because of global warming or climate change?
My wife mentioned a big puddle on Nose Hill Drive, said the road was flooded.
My 4.5 yro thought she said "Noah's Hill Drive" and started raving about "is Calgary/Canada/world flooding?"
the ducks won because they have more grinder Canadians and not a roster of eurowienies looking forward to 18 holes.
June is always monsoon season here in Calgary.
The rain actually tore up some pavement on one particular hill in NW Calgary. I drove by it on Tuesday and it looks like some of the asphalt just started flowing down the hill.
Warwick, I respectfully disagree with your assertion on that spelling. Where's it from?
The Ducks won the Cup because I was rooting for the Senators (Leafs fan).
Does anyone know what the worst two floods have been in Calgary in the last 50 years, or maybe 100 years? I don't know the answer, but my in-laws live in Roxborough (it's down low) and were pretty impressed a couple of years back (2005, I think). I can't imagine this has happened all that regularly.
Don't know about Calgary, but, from memory;
Winnipeg, Red River worst floods in ascending order;
1996
1974
1950
1997
1863
1826 -- the Grand Daddy of them all. Aboriginal folklore, only Birds Hill (Park) was visible.
And when lake Agazzi was in full bloom, present day Wpg was under 600 feet of water.
Your point being, Crab ??

After decades of mush, Canada is now a world leader again !! :)
Not the patsy/woosy "well, let me tell ya. We the Liberal Party will .... er, sign onto frauds". "The proof is da proof, ya know"
Calgary is lucky to have global warming.
Wyoming is UNlucky to have global cooling.
Which do you prefer ?? Adjust the Earth's Thermostat here

CHEYENNE — Snow, heavy rain and strong wind caused travel problems in parts of Wyoming today.
Up to 8 inches of snow fell in the Big Horn Mountains in northern Wyoming

Isn't this June ?
I drove across the Glenmore Wednesday from Sarcee to Barlow. I noticed the fishies decorating the walls of the underpass being constructed. Decorative or pictographic warnings? Hmmm
Ron: "Your point being, Crab??"
I was wondering if it appears to have been worse in the last 57 years or so. Wacky weather in Wyoming, too, by the look of it.
...still haven't figured out who got the loonie award for designing Glenmore to begin with.
Elevated highway coming from the east, then dips to tunneling traffic under MacLeod and then comes up for Elbow.
Me thinks the GM dealership at the corner had something to do with it, as well the kickbacks for the Mayfair hotel at Elbow and Glenmore.
Was up at Gull Lake for the week, glad I missed all this, but someone said Nose Hill (Noah's Hill - love it!) was flooded. Probably by Ranchlands corner where CO-OP was right?
