When A Chainsaw Makes The Perfect Wedding Gift

It's an auspicious occasion...

... at Balia village in Balasore district of Orissa. The priest, the guests and many other small details needed for an elaborate ceremony are in place. But this is no ordinary event. These are invitees to a wedding where the groom is a banyan tree and the bride a peepal tree.

[...]

An age-old tradition, this wedding was organised by the village committee, along with a few plantation volunteers. Locals say such events foster love for trees.

“Such marriages encourage our regards for trees and helps in spreading awareness on plantation. It is a perfect platform to blend tradition with awareness on environment,” said Pushpanjali Jena, plantation volunteer.

Now, watch what blows in on the wake of this most unlikely "news" report, as surely as snow follows Gore...
At a time when the world is debating global warming and climate change, it is perhaps such ceremonies that one cannot afford to ignore.

Indeed one cannot - because it adds to the growing mountain of evidence that the world has been hijacked by crazy people.

"Indeed one cannot - because it adds to the growing mountain of evidence that the world has been hijacked by crazy people."

Haha, YES!

*
yup... we're havin' a party and al gore's
bringin' the creme de crazy.

What a gratuitous piece of crap. Journalism at its most agenda driven.

No surprise...."CNN-IBN is a partnership between Global Broadcast News (GBN), a TV18 Group Company, and Turner International (Turner) in India."....CNN is involved.

I doubt these probably illiterate and economically marginal villagers could give a damn about the GW garbage. Nice segue into their agenda driven journalism on the part of CNN.

Soo..ummm..I assume the willows were bridesmaids...I coulda been so that at the dance!!

*sigh*

Syncro

Crazy and insane what now a wedding of a rock and a patch of dirt and was AL GORE the best man? after all he has a lot to do with trees and speaking did you ever see the disney cartoon FLOWERS AND TREES? i mean AL GORE looks like that nasty tree monster and he woukld remand you of those scary tree monsters that terrified SNOW WHITE

I must be missing something ... what's wrong with celebrating an "age-old tradition" ... new words?

I admit we put up a Christmas tree each year ... some people call it an X-mas tree.

I must be missing something ...

No doubt of that.

No you aren't missing anything. Kate and her unibrows, knuckle walking, redneck followers:
1. Are incapable of understand traditions and practices of other cultures, and
2. Don't understand the significance of the global warming connection at the end of the piece.

ol hoss,

Clue me in ... I'm not sh*ting ... I'm not seeing anything.

"...it is perhaps such ceremonies that we cannot ignore." (sic)

Well, absolutely not, no; no, yes, we cannot ignore them, perhaps, not now that they're closer to home, and writ large.

Nice to see alby defending a goofy religion.

As long as it's not Abrahamic it's a good religion, right alby? No matter that Hinduism (and India) is horribly misogynist and that the priest involved in the ceremony must be male by tradition, eh sport?

As long as they don't have ghastly white skin it's cool to practice goofy religions and be sexist and racist, right alby?

"Clue me in ... I'm not sh*ting ... I'm not seeing anything."

Ural, they're taking issue with the article linking this cultural ritual with the global warming debate. It's not entirely obvious, however, whether Kate's use of "crazy people" at the end of her post is referring to the CNN-IBN reporter, anyone who endorses the AGW theory, and/or the villagers of Balia.

Under the circumstances, I think some kilogram meters per second squared would make a better gift. (If you can't figure out this joke, do not adjust your sense of humour, as it is admittedly rather obtuse, although there is a clue in this sentance.)

Ural, to further clarify what abbreviated Adam said, the point of the posting (if I may be so bold) is to point out the agenda-driven journalism on AGW. The story about a tree marriage is quaint and nobody here cares about what those folks believe or not...the story should have ended there.

The issue is the add on about "enjoy it while you can because we're all gonna die because of global warming, don't you know". The journalists are finding the flimsiest of excuses to add a kick at GW anyway they can.

To wit, consider the following opportunities lost by journalists: "Scientists think they have discovered how to cure baldness...but with the rise in temperatures from GW, the long-sought cure may be pointless"; "Ottawa Senators finally going to the Stanley Cup...hopefully they can win it before the melting ice caps flood Ottawa"; etc and ad nauseum.

News organizations should report the news. Period. Full stop. But they're not...they're proselytizing (sp?). Enough already.

alby, u leftoid moron

1. I pluck my unibrow to fit into "mainstream" society
2. I drag my knuckles, I do not walk with them(even us die hard rednecks use our feet for walking)
3. You must be some kind of retard if you are still buying the global cooling/global warming/climate change BS(or you have the hots for dr fruit fly)

have a nice "the sky is falling" kind of life, you lefty idiot....I am going to fire up the boat, and enjoy mine

What is it like to be so utterly stupid there albatros, as I sit here in southern Alberta at 6:10 on May 21 looking at the snow pile up outside and realize that I have 10 bales of feed left for my cows that have no grass to eat yet because it has been so cold all spring, and see morons like yourself yipping about this massive hoax called global warming, I can't believe it. Yea, call me a knuckle dragger whatever you want you do nothing lieberal, but I wouls like to see you go out and borrow 1.5 million and start your own farm ranch operation and see how long you last you worthless putz, your auction would very quick to come, because you are a liberal, you don't contribute to society anything but critisism, do you donate to any charities like most of us knuckle draggers, do you do any free work for fund raisers like us unibrows do, no you don't because you are a liberal. Morons like you Suzuki, Gore , May [etal] used to be locked up or at best marginalized now they are given podiums so fools like yourself can fawn over their every lie and become the useful idiots that you all are, you liberals.

Clue me in ... I'm not sh*ting ... I'm not seeing anything.

Clueless, constipated and blind. You're in bad shape.

Mass media is an entertainment industry that loves silly ideas...who really swallows their daily gruel?

Does it matter what trailer park trash accept as "news" ?

I still like the mariner tradition of hanging a dead albatross around someones neck.

Kingstonlad, you said

3. You must be some kind of retard if you are still buying the global cooling/global warming/climate change BS(or you have the hots for dr fruit fly)

Why would you say that. What evidence can you present against global cooling / global warming / climate change?

John

John @ 9:50 No one is denying the climate is changing, it's always been changing. The cause is still up for debate. However, many scientists are questioning the "science" behind global warming and seeing other causes, mostly natural causes.
When Suzuki, Gore throw the word "concensus" around, I get very skeptical. Concensus is not a scientific term. Science is fact based, not opinion based. When Suzuki, Gore and all their flock refuse to debate global warming/climate change, we have to question their motives.

Olde Spice: I agree with you about the term consensus. I used to joke with my collegues when we disagreed and sought a third opinion calling it "engineering by democracy". However keep in mind that scientific consensus is different that political consensus. In science, consensus arises from a thousand scientists each seeing where their part of the puzzle fits in. As opposed to political consensus, it is both a very strong and very fragile thing. It is strong because it does encompass a large number of people who support it strongly, but it is even more fragile since all it takes is one well planned experiment to show it wrong.

Regarding debate, I would be pleased to discuss the science of global warming with you (or anyone else) although debate is a bit of a strong word for discussions on a blog. But I am always interested in viewpoints that challenge my own.

John

John: A good place to start gathering information is at Roger Pielke's site://climatesci.colorado.edu/. It is usefull to read the science evaluations they make and compare them to the views at RealClimate.org. The latter site is home of the true believers. What I find interesting is the areas where they agree. For instance, it appears that both sides agree that temperature change PRECEDES changes in carbon dioxide by about 800 years over the centuries, but they do corelate closely. The result, according to Pielke is that changes in carbon dioxide are driven by changes in temperature - ie. as the oceans warm, more carbon dioxide is released. They suspect that natural reasons cause the temperature changes. On the RealClimate side, they agree that "something" causes the temperature to rise but then, after the 800 year gap, the carbon dioxide increase then starts to drive the temperature increase for the balance of the cycle - about 5000 years. Which sounds more reasonable to you?

Bobzorunkle: Thanks for the reply. I do read Pielke on occasion and I find his comments on policy interesting. I will note that he is not really a scientists himself but likes to look at the interesction of policy and science.

In regards to your comments about de-glacation, I would say that there are a number of issues here. While the 800 + / - 600 is the currently quoted figure, I am interested to see how this paper is received by the community. So far, I haven't seen any response to it.

But accepting the 800 +/- number for now, in regards to your question about which is more reasonable, I would guess that would depend on the forcing that initiated the change. Based on timing it seems fairly certain that the changes have to do with orbital mechanics. So the question is could these changes cause enough of a forcing to raise temperatures without a feedback mechanism. Based on what the changes consist of I would say not (see Milankovitch Cycles).

Of course this whole line of argument also runs counter to the actual physics of global warming. I.e. that CO2 absorbs IR radiation and that we are currently responsible for the rise in CO2.

Regards,
John

John Cross,

I believe that you are referrring to R. Pielke Jr.
Bobzorunkle's URL refers to R. Pielke Sr.'s blog.
Senior's blog is much more technical than Junior's blog.

Anyway, Pielke Jr is no longer contributing to the Prometheus blog.

Dave C:

You are correct on both counts. Thanks, I didn't know that Pielke was leaving. I enjoyed reading his work.

John

i agree with the other posts...the climate changes all the time, it's called the seasons...as far as humans being the cause....please spare me the dr fruit fly diatribe

Kingstonlad: We can agree on somethings, I too agree that climate changes over the seasons. The interesting thing is that there are well known and documented patterns to the changes.

However in your previous post you were very specific that "You must be some kind of retard if you are still buying the global cooling/global warming/climate change BS" so I was interested in seeing the science that would allow you to make such a strong pronouncement.

Regards,
John

Still snowing in Calgary, and Canmore can expect 10cm soon.
We have trees marrying trees, a man married a goat,(is now a widow) and a while back there was tv coverage of a woman marrying a dolphin. We have a dog nursing 3 tiger cubs. We have polygamy in BC. What next. Oh, the whales are going home.
No wonder the world is in a mess.
Maybe we could have countries marrying another country, instead of calling it foreign aid, or prov marrying another prov. Then there is always the possibility that Que would marry Canada.
Remember, the liberals said SSM would never be allowed.

Good comment, bartinsky. I notice that the people who are attracted to the socialist Parties, and are quick to jump on any "Anti" bandwagon, are the ones who produce nothing.

From a construction worker to a farmer, thanks for all your hard work.

Back on to the topic... the big difference that nobody seems to have picked up is that with this religion/belief nobody is threatening to kill you with a weed wacker if you don't convert. I am sure these people would find some westen practices strange. Now lets leaf the happy couple alone ;-)

BTW some things may seem strange at first until you can see them in a different light. Remember where bungee jumping got it's roots?

"...with this religion/belief nobody is threatening to kill you with a weed wacker if you don't convert."

I suppose that, from a theological perspective, it's at least equally as harsh to condemn others to an eternity in hell if they don't convert.

"I suppose that, from a theological perspective, it's at least equally as harsh to condemn others to an eternity in hell if they don't convert."

Apples and oranges imo. I'll take a zealot who verbally condems me to an eternity of hell, compared to getting my head sawed off with a dull knife on the internet anyday.

With the rush to reduce CO2, I'm scared they'll go TOO FAR!! Y'all know how a pendulum works eh?

It's possible soon there may not be ENOUGH Co2 to sustain plant life on our pretty blue marble. Things apparently can change fast...just like that!

So just in case, I'm using my fire pit tonite, an' put a lil of the ole co2 back!

I feel better already.. now, where is that old gas can...

Kingstonlad, I deeply apologise by calling you a knuckle walker as I was unaware that you have evolved to knuckle dragging.

For bartinsky at May 21, 2007 8:23 AM

I called you a knuckle walker, not a knuckle dragger, there is a distinct difference.
Don't blame me if you've made bad business decisions. I'm sure you'll ask for government handouts for losses on your farm. Get used to it, global warming will bankrupt many farms in your area over the next fifty years.
As for me I have done more for society than you could dream about doing in two lifetimes. You should know the person you are talking about before making accusations like that.
Unlike your stereotyping, I donate to the Green Party of Manitoba, the Liberal Party of Canada, Canadian Aid for Chernobyl and War Child Canada. I don’t consider donations to churches and religious organisations charity as many knuckle walking rednecks often state to boost their claims of being charitable.
Another thing you got wrong is, I’m not a Liberal, I’m a socialist.

Back a few years ago a bunch of wackos held a funeral for a tree and some one read JOYCE KILMERS poem TREES Woe some poeple are crazy and hey the eco-freaks want to cut down all those truffula tress RUN LORAX RUN

Apples and oranges imo. I'll take a zealot who verbally condems me to an eternity of hell, compared to getting my head sawed off with a dull knife on the internet anyday.

Personally, multirec, I feel the same way as you. But from the perspective of the True Believer, the afterlife is of far greater spiritual significance than this mere mortal existence. Condemning others to eternal suffering would literally be the worst of all possible punishments.
