Good question. Apparently it was about driving up the price of oil to fund Israel....(sarcasm off)

SO the US consumes about 7.5 billion barrels of oil in a year. In 2005 the US had spent 350 billion since 2001 on Afghanistan and Iraq....lets assume the spent another 100,000,000,000 in the next two years for a total of 450,000,000,000

This means an average of 100,000,000,000 a year, rough estimates

So lets see if this is all about oil how much is it about oil.

7.5 billion barrels yields approxiumately 150 billion gallons of gasoline (20 gallons refined per barrel). Now not all oil goes into gasoline, but this is just a what if. So the cost so far, if it is about security of supply, is $0.666 (whoa that should set someone off) per gallon.

Gasoline currently costs about $3.00 gallon in the US. (allentown PA as an example)

So is the .66 paid by the taxpayers of the US worth it to ensure secrity of supply? Assuming it is all about oil?

The obvious alternative is just to pay the $.66 more to the producer of the oil. In theory the US consumer should be indifferent to this "tax" and spend less on its military adventure.

Then you have to look at the other strategic considerations

1) What would the "producer" do with the tax, is this simply value pricing and wealth redistribution??? (hmmm many would say not)
2) Would the US be better off with the military doing less

And here is the end result....if the US invests for another 5 years and has spent a trillion dollars on these two ventures and they succeed (assuming it is all about oil) what is the payback. Well if oil prices fall by 50% because of the new supply of Iraqi oil, in friendly hands, then the payback on that Trillion dollars is $1.50 (assuming gas prices drop in half) x 150 billion or 225 Billion (or 5 year payback) (just to the US)

So right now the gains far exceed the costs of the war at a strategic level, assuming this is all about oil.

There is a fair argument that the US could spend the money better on other purposes but that is another discussion.

I may well have made a math error somewhere but I think this is one (very utilitarian) way of looking at the war. Especially when it is allegedly all about oil. Failure...well thats a different story.
