THE ponytails might have greyed, and they're not as lithe as they were 40 years ago, but for the Harley-riding Vietnam veterans who descend on Washington for Memorial Day, it's a chance to remember and reflect on the war that changed their generation.

An estimated 400,000 motorcyclists swarmed the capital at the weekend for the 20th Rolling Thunder event. Many were veterans sporting leather vests advertising their platoon, their tour of duty, fallen comrades — and their devotion to their Harley-Davidson.

Some had ridden across the US in a pilgrimage to "the Wall", the name given to the stark yet moving monument that records the names of the 58,000 US servicemen who died in Vietnam.

Others had come from closer states. Like Jim Burgess, from Florida. He flew reconnaissance planes out of Thailand along the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

"I got 10 people up on the Wall — one from my squadron. You gotta come and visit them once in a while," he said.

Just returned to the UK from a week in Canada (scouting for a house as I'm moving back this summer).

Saw Mayor Miller on TV decrying the pernicious proximity of the US and all the handguns flowing across the border to kill our schoolchildren.

I found that interesting. Here in the UK, handgun crime and death would put Canada to shame. Three interesting "factoids":

1. Handguns are illegal in the UK. Even the police don't routinely carry them. Essentially, only criminals are free to carry handguns (because of course, the law doesn't apply to them: they're criminals!).

2. The Atlantic Ocean is a considerably larger body of water than Lake Ontario; how are all those handguns getting from the US to the streets of London, Birmingham and Manchester?

3. You will not be surprised to know that most of the perpetrators and victims of handgun deaths tend to be Jamaican "yardies" (members of Afro-Caribbean gangs).

The TO Star has run an article (Tues) questioning the wisdom efficacy of Official Multiculturalism in Canada. If Harper is tuned in - he might do well to get off the instant/high powered move to green and get on this one.

I have about given up on any move to reduce Official Multiculturalism federally to "small m" multiculturalism (integration with allowances for reasonable accomodation) and really only believe that it can be done at the provincial level mow - if it is to be done at all.

The extreme political correctness mode we find ourselves in today was initiated by Trudeau et al, perpetuated by Mulroney et al, and simply has to be taken apart by Harper et al (the Liberals sure are not about to do it now or anytime in the future) before we end up like to many places in Europe.

Australia seems to have moved to legislate important factors that "must be accepted" by those wanting to immigrate to Australia. Read integrate.

It is about integration and not this mythical beast that has been forced on decades of public school teachers (hence on society generally over the decades)- that of Canada a a Mosaic. Teachers had to/still do use prescribed text books and since at least 1984 in Alberta, those prescribed text books in Social Studies include the concept of Trudeau's mosaic.

It is now up to the younger baby boomers who basically know nothing other than this concept to really put the question to themselves - is it (the mosaic concept) working for you and your children now or does it have to change significantly.

The Trudeau concept of the Mosaic was born out of nothing more than that we in Canada must have something unlike that big, bad, U.S. (melting pot -read integration) so let's invent a new model of social engineering and call it the mosaic.

The federal government may have to explain to the Federal Court why it is not sticking to the Kyoto Protocol thanks to a landmark lawsuit filed in Ottawa on Tuesday.

In papers filed to the Federal Court on behalf of Friends of the Earth Canada, it is alleged the government is violating Canadian law by failing to meet the international agreement to cut greenhouse-gas emissions.
