Just Think What We Could Get For Shutting Down The 401

In a proposal with all the economic rationality of developed world agricultural subsidies that pay farmers not to farm, Ecuador has seriously proposed that it be paid $350 million per year not to develop one of its oil fields as a contribution to alleviate global warming. According to the article “countries like Italy and Norway, as well as international foundations, the Inter-American Development Bank, the United Nations and universities in the United States have voiced interest in the Ecuadorian proposal.”

See what you get by mixing fuel and agriculture subsidies? Someone comes along with a long memory, and a fresh new variant of an old angle.

It's not much different from the Kyoto Accord, which takes money from developed industrial countries and hands over that money to third world countries - to build their own polluting factories.

The format is the same; the industrial world is to support the non-industrial world. The only difference is that this tactic has the agenda of maintaining the non-industrial status of the third world. Kyoto is giving them money to build factories - and don't anyone try to naively say that these new factories won't be heavy polluters. This new scam is just giving them money - which will all go into the pockets of the corrupt administration.

Next Iran can ask for $1.0 Billion for not further developing Nuclear Weapons

and now when you buy a ticket on Air Canada, you get asked if you want to voluntarily buy some carbon offsets.

How much longer before its compulsory ? Let's see . . . charge $50, deduct (and pocket) Operating & Management fee of $40, spend $10 on some tree planting operation that was happening regardless.

did anyone see the ridiculous amount of play CTV gave that Pembina Institute "study". Basically it's more "we must meet our Kyoto targets no matter what," stylized outrage.

Let us fervently hope some Lefty nut group bankrupts themselves trying to pony up the $350 million.

AsI stated before, nuts used to be locked up, now they are given a podium to preach global warming. Why don't they just turn down the thermostat on the sun, yea that might work, suzuki and gore you morons,

Thats friggin brilliant!! Now if I can only get these developers to pay me not to build houses that people won't live in......Freedom 55 Baby!!

Syncro

You serious Fred? About the Air Canada thing? It is just loopy enough to be true for those freaks.

Hey - brilliant!

I've just bought a healthy chunk of wooded land in the Ontario countryside.

Suppose there's any chance I can get paid for doing nothing to those trees?

Re the Pembina Institute, I've always found it amusing that it's referred to as a "left wing think tank", which is a clear contradiction in terms, an oxymoron, if you will.

Kind of like "airline food" and " enthusiastic indifference" etc.

I'm looking for partners. Kiosks in airports all over Canada which sell cut rate carbon credits...20% less than Air Canada's for the same piece of paper. I'm thinking the Toronto franchise will be the best, largest crowds and the highest percentage of idiots.

On top of which the taxpayers get to fund ethanol which costs more to produce than regular gasoline. Yippee ki yah!

Silly as it may sound, you can be paid through a hugh tax receipt for not harvesting your trees in Ontario by putting a conservation easement on your property. See the link for more info.

http://www.on.ec.gc.ca/wildlife/ecogifts/easements-e.html

Grithater.. I sure wouldn't want the one at the Calgary airport, with all us mouth breathin ,knuckle draggin, redneck global warming deniers around it could get dangerous.

Hmm...

While we're on this subject, does this mean the Sudanese government will be looking for cash because it's playing its part to combat overpopulation and overdevelopment on the African continent?

"mudpie":

I checked that link. Fascinating.

However, it's very clear that any kind of conservation easement means the property value is doomed to decline: no rapacious developer would buy a square centimetre of my property if he knew he couldn't do a thing to it.

Selfishly, I notice no sample figures ($$$$) are provided to show me whether it's actually worthwhile for me to do such a thing.

This seems like a great scheme for ideologically committed folks who already have scads of acres and aren't concerned with making a buck anymore.

Also, if I were wealthy as all get-out, a conservation easement would seem to be a great way to keep the urban Untermenschen out of my backyard - forever!

Ah well, perhaps I'm too cynical.

Like Ecuador, I'm canny enough to prefer the cash payment upfront and change my mind later if I feel like it.

See even they are falling for this global warming lie i tell you this global warming is athe biggist lie in the world and AL GORE is the worlds biggist liar

The Phantom says:
"Let us fervently hope some Lefty nut group bankrupts themselves trying to pony up the $350 million."

I think this is wishful but very unlikely. Remember that the MO of the lefties is to always have someone else pay the costs of their impositions.

If the Ecuador gov't gets paid to not develop oil, the money goes to the gov't. If the oil gets developed, jobs are created, money goes to the people. Which would the left choose?

I feel like I am in a science fiction story where an entire world goes mad and implodes in various ways.

Then aliens arrive and try to make sense of what happened, cannot, then decide to colonize and continue on until whatever made us crazy takes hold of them. Then, they then spread it throughout the galaxy.

We could call that movie:

"The Leftist Movement That Destroyed The Milky Way Galaxy"

Can my estate claim carbon credits and other similar benefits when I depart this crazy planet, since I will no longer be using up earth's resources and polluting the environment? I'd really like to leave some extra cash to my spouse and relatives. :)

Ecuador can't develop their oil fields anyways. They don't have the choice. That's at the core of this scam. Correa is another Chavez wannabe who is driving the country to ruin. Let's expose this for what it is and it sure isn't about environmental concerns.

Ecuador can't attract foreign investment after it shafted the World Bank. It's oil production is declining. It's relationship with foreign investors is poor. It can't attract capital for development of those fields...."a lack of contract enforcement severely hamper both foreign and domestic investment." So, this scam, capitalizing on the easily duped envirno lefties, suffices.

While mismanagement and corruption in the state-owned oil sector have depressed Ecuador’s petroleum production for more than a decade, further government intervention will only constrain investment. Abandoning multilateral lenders for Venezuelan largesse may work as long as President Hugo Chávez has money to spend, but the flow could dry up at any time, leaving Ecuador unable to pay its bills.

I am perfectly willing to let anyone pay me not to buy some land and drill for oil. Please make your cheques to Texas Canuck. All major credit cards and Paypal accepted.

"JJM"

I know of one fellow who put a conservation easement on his 100 acre property and received a $500,0000 tax receipt through the eco-gift program that can be used over five years. It depends where your poperty is located, but some crafty agents can spin the "nature lovers paradise" so that the re-sale price of the property is not diminished because of the easement. If you are near urban, you are right that potential development goes out the window with the easement attached, so this is best for wooded or swampy land away from urban areas.

I understand that many left leaning governments, think tanks, and universities around the world are contemplating a new scheme whereby taxpayers would pay them NOT to come up with any useful rational ideas.
What's that you say? We are already paying them to do just that?? OK. Never mind.

There has got to be serious money to made in this racket. Google carbon credits in Canada and have a look. Uniglobe will pop up quickly. For $22.75 a traveller can puchase an "offset" for a return flight from Vancouver to Toronto, and the power production this supports is enough to supply 100 homes for a day! Brilliant! 100 homes for a day = 1 home for 100 days or 3 months, all for $22.75. Leftards read that and pony up. Brilliant!

Uniglobe has got to have a revenue line called stupidity levy or some such thing.

Absolute madness.

However if someone is willing to pay me enough money to sit at home rather than go to work....in fact why dont we all do that...

Re Iran....well North Korea already did that, got money etc for not doign something....generally it is called extortion.

Amazing, get paid to not develop it, the resource remains in the ground for use later....great work if you can get it.

This is getting to shark jumping territory. We are almost there. If tis summer is cool and the winter cold...which it may well be given that sea surface temperatures are down, the whole thing becomes unsustanable.

I look forward to Live Earth with it being cold and rainy.

Next up for Air Canada, ... A Carbon Credit Collector Card .** CCCC **. :)

Has human intelligence declined ?? Someone should do a study, with govmit grant, of course.

Although a certain portion of the population has always been drawn into scams, the intensity level of the stupidity has increase since about 1968 or so.

Before '68' we only had 'chain letters' and 'snake oil' and 'below sea level Florida lots' and 'fortune tellers' and other 'pig-in-a-pokes'.

Now there are 'carbon credits' and 'end of the world Kults' and 'back to the cave orgs' and 'documentaries are now scams' and on and on.

Some may suggest this 'degrading' of human intelligence started with the Trudeau/Mulroney/Chretien/Martin gang.

Others may think it is the result of the Media's intentional 'Dumbing Down' of the "news". Crowding out the Tabloids.

Go figure.

I left a nasty comment on the Air Canada site about this...something along the lines of a tax on the stupid, but as long as I don't pay, I don't care. But its a slippery slope before AC makes everyone pay, and as someone said, take a huge management few for investing in a scam.

This is just Kyoto taken to a global extortion stage.

I have a better racket...I form a really dystopian kleptocratic government full of loopy activists promoting every destructive policy ever thought of...then I get you to pay me subsidy transfers not to legislate...hey this subsidy for non productivity DOES work in some cases ;-)

Ecuador has the best darn undeveloped oil field in all of Mexico. Just ask them before they get the cheque. They'll need the money to seal up all those polluting oil seeps.

jimbola: "...a slippery slope before AC makes everyone pay"

And that's why I prefer to fly Westjet.

Texas Canuck:

That would be the tune:

"Money for nothing, the cheques for free."

How many tenured pseudo-academic whores are we involuntarily paying to spew this kind of (cloaked in watermelon rhetoric) nonsense?

How many amoral and unprincipled business opportunists (whores) are ready and willing to cash-in on the irrational orgy?

How many monkey-brained media parrots are saturating the MSM with regurgitated hysteria to desensitize the public to such gross attacks on reason?

The backward nations recognize the opportunities created from the GW mass hysteria plaguing Western democracies. This is a logical progression.

MSM is picking up on it this week . . .

"Passengers face the cash, credit or carbon tax question"

instapundit has a link to a story about burning salt water.amazing just think of the possibilities but then we might run out of salt water and give the enviros something else to whine about.

"and now when you buy a ticket on Air Canada, you get asked if you want to voluntarily buy some carbon offsets."

As a Canadian with his wife in China I hope this is a fucking joke. I do not want to spend my summer vacation for killing a Chinese Air Canada employee in a Chinese jail. Bloody hell flying cattle class is bad enough.

I DO NOT ENDORSE THIS CLIMATE CRAP.

Can I get a few million for not utilizing myself to full potential? How about I won't take that night job in exchange for $35,000.

paying me to use a euro-weenie push mower - $5,000.00
paying me to trade in my ski-boat for a canoe - $10,000.00
paying me to trade my 250hp V6 for a EV - $50,000.00

seeing dr fruit fly and the idiot gore proven wrong(AGAIN) - priceless

there are some things money just cannot buy

at one time i had to take about 4 to 6 flights a week man i am glad i am retired. to to van 22.75 offset, wow what a deal. the empress lounge was a better deal

So if Equador could get 350 mill for its piddly little reserve how much could we get for AB and SK's oilsands? - a couple trillion perhaps?

The new Conservative attack ads are there.

The one has Dion saying he is acclaimed as a reho, meaning hero....hilarious!

Oops.... sorry for the OT, thought I was in reader's tips.

We have a version of the Chavez show in Canada - the Dionsky Deke. Apparently, GHG emissions went up in Canada because Tories and big, bad Klein and Harris (yeah, he said it) stopped their MAJORITY GOVERNMENT from taking action. Those stupid Canadians, working hard, creating jobs, increasing fuel efficiency - IT'S THEIR FAULT TOO.

Picture this guy in election campaign, where he gets challenged right away, every time. I can hear it now "This is not fair ....do you think it's easy to (be a leader,) set priorities?"

No, it's not easy, but that's no excuse for inaction. Tories have done more in 15 months than Libs did in 13 years.

Mark my words, kids, Harper and CPC will mop floor with these guys in election.

Libs hoping to delay election until 2009, so some calamity can happen so they can BLAME Tories and win election. That is their only strategy, hoping for big body count out of Afghan, or terrorist attack here, or economic slowdown.

hey Gord this is what the NDP have been waiting for. We do nothing and get paid for it!

Can we get a subsidy for not importing immigrants into our high energy use country from low energy use countries?

Conservation easements: Excellent idea, thre been several case here in the US where millionaires buy up expensive land, build a nice house inthe middle and get a easement for all but a few acres. The hole inthe doughnut.

Towns HATE it. Suddenly 100 acres of taxable land becomes 5 acres and some change.

I'm conflicted because in many areas it's the only way your're going to avoid wall to wall developement but it's benefiting basically onlythe rich guy inthe middle...it's not like the remain 95 acres are public use.
