Seems kinda weird for us to be witnessing a socialist dictator like Chavez starting up a state sponsored station while here in Canada we have much the same situation. THe government decides which channels we are allowed to watch and also has a socialist friendly, anti-american state run media (AM radio, FM radio, television, internet). All payed for with our tax money.

Maybe we should be the ones saying hola to the bulldozers as we rid this country of those that make a pretty penny attempting to tell us how to think.

Looks like Mr. Chavez is about right on schedule. Isn't the next step to close the borders? Then begin arresting foreign nationals as spies. Hold show trials. Then declare war on someone? Keeps the restless population busy.

I'm sure there must be a United Nations component here somewhere, but I can't remember where it schedules into the mix.

the other opposition Tv networks have had their Tv concessions renewed for 5 more years. Mr. Chavez is up for (indefinite) re-election in 5 1/2 years, so if they don't toe the socialist line, they're next. In the meantime, the constitution is being re-written (in secret) to allow for this.
On the other hand, there really isn't enough dinero to continue all the projects for much more than 8 months. Already their are many blogs with fotos of empty meat counters.
And how many murders this year? +18.000 at latest count... not so funny how the (Chavez stacked) courts ignore this toll...

All that's left then, is to follow in Argentina's military governments (failing) footsteps and declare war on someone... I suppose it wouldn't be such an obvious loss being foretold if they at least had some experence in military operations. But they've only had minor "peacekeeping" roles to keep the troops morale up... ya gotta wonder who they'll pick a fight with. It won't be Colombia. Their troops are tempered with a +40 year civil war. It'd be like Jordan picking a fight with Israel.

Would you be so kind as to present us with any links where Stephen Harper has said he will shut down the CBC once he gets a majority government? Hypothetically, even if this were to occur, it is likely that the CBC would be privatized and sold to the highest bidder. Isn't this kind of the opposite of what Chavez is doing? (ie. moving the network from government control to the control of a separate entity not controlled by the government?)

Privatized is basically the same as shut down. The Cons would probably try to sell the CBC to Fox. It may be opposite to what Hugo is doing, but often opposites create the same results (like acid vs. base).

If Harper sold the CBC it would be a good thing, the state shouldn't control the media. Even if Harper sells off the CBC it will still be the same leftist hacks with no credibility blathering on all day anyway. Which is different from Chavez because he's muzzled RCTV to say what he wants.

At the end of the day I see Harper on TV enough as it is. If people don't like him they can vote him out. Good luck getting rid of Chaz in a few years.

With respect to selling off the CBC, why would Rupert Murdoch or any other sensible businessman want to spend money on a network that nobody watches? When the rest of North America is headed digital in the next year, the present CBC hardware infrastructure will be junk. The CBC itself has already talked about shutting down its regional network. Harper is just giving the company notice that the government will not spend capital on a dinosaur.

Marc, I'd bet on a war, with Argentina as an ally, against Britain, to regain the Falklands. It's a can't lose situation PR wise, even if they did lose the battle. Why is Chavez the new darling of the left? Left wingers are at best inherently intellectually lazy and more commonly intellectually void. The guiding rule when Russia was utopia was that whatever the US promoted was bad. Since the muslim world hates the US, the left deems anything muslims do is good. Genocide in Darfur with muslims murdering 200,000 (or so) black Christians is a geopolitical correction. If someone has to be blamed for these deaths, it must be the fault of the United States. (Personally I think it those damned Icelanders!) If the US, Canada or Israel kills 5 terrorists who are making bombs to kill innocent non-combatant men, women and children in a market somewhere they are war criminals for killing the bomb makers.
