Remember, the people of Venezuela vote thay pig into power.
No matter how bad you think your right wingers are, never look to the left for relief, you will only get totalitarianism in the end. That is what the Left is all about.
I almost feel sorry for those folks, but then I remember that they voted him in.
Now they can enjoy their workers paradisio!
I guess the Cuban experience wasn't lesson enough for our little brown Spanish brothers and sisters.
Remember, the Canadian radio and television commission has the same power, for different reasons, though if socialists were in power they would find a way to justify anything to make you heel. It could be expected that they already had a test run on the subject.
A socialist government in Canada would have not problem what so ever to do same thing. The resulting situation would be much different from Venezuela, though there may be enough no fault Canadians that would agree to that.
From Wikipedia:
Yanni is a self-taught pianist who began his musical career by giving recitals for family members. Early in his life, he was also a competitive swimmer in Greece and set a national record in the 50-meter freestyle competition. He later attended the University of Minnesota and earned a B.A. in psychology. After graduation, Yanni chose to try a career in music, although he could not read music and had no formal training... Later in life, he went insane and started making racist postings on conservative web sites.
So on a totally different topic. I have an american sirius radio and I get Fox news on it on channel 145. Is there any truth that the Canadian Sirius radio does not get Fox news??
Seems kinda weird for us to be witnessing a socialist dictator like Chavez starting up a state sponsored station while here in Canada we have much the same situation. THe government decides which channels we are allowed to watch and also has a socialist friendly, anti-american state run media (AM radio, FM radio, television, internet). All payed for with our tax money.
Maybe we should be the ones saying hola to the bulldozers as we rid this country of those that make a pretty penny attempting to tell us how to think.
Looks like Mr. Chavez is about right on schedule. Isn't the next step to close the borders? Then begin arresting foreign nationals as spies. Hold show trials. Then declare war on someone? Keeps the restless population busy.
I'm sure there must be a United Nations component here somewhere, but I can't remember where it schedules into the mix.
The next step has already taken place,
the other opposition Tv networks have had their Tv concessions renewed for 5 more years. Mr. Chavez is up for (indefinite) re-election in 5 1/2 years, so if they don't toe the socialist line, they're next. In the meantime, the constitution is being re-written (in secret) to allow for this.
On the other hand, there really isn't enough dinero to continue all the projects for much more than 8 months. Already their are many blogs with fotos of empty meat counters.
And how many murders this year? +18.000 at latest count... not so funny how the (Chavez stacked) courts ignore this toll...
All that's left then, is to follow in Argentina's military governments (failing) footsteps and declare war on someone... I suppose it wouldn't be such an obvious loss being foretold if they at least had some experence in military operations. But they've only had minor "peacekeeping" roles to keep the troops morale up... ya gotta wonder who they'll pick a fight with. It won't be Colombia. Their troops are tempered with a +40 year civil war. It'd be like Jordan picking a fight with Israel.
It's funny how right wing hypocrites don't notice the similarities between Harper and Hugo when it comes to the media:
Harper avoids talking to any media that doesn't give him fawning coverage, and the only reason the Cons haven't shut down the CBC is because they don't have a majority.
The Left is working hard to ban the use all adjectives.
The people in Venezuela are Spanish or Spanish-Indian mix and are brown.
I have noted in my travels to South America that the majority of the folks down there are smaller than North Americans. Thus, "little brown Spanish brothers and sisters". Only the truth there Bullshivic.
They did make a big mistake as did the Cubans and many other South and Central American countries over the years. As did Canada during the Trudeau years.
Bullshivik, you are a repressive type, not unlike Chavez himself. That is the dominant trait of the Left. On the Left you are either repressed or are the repressor. Not an inviting cult.
Now you know a bit more about yourself.
One more thing. Yanni is a common Greek name. The translation is John. To think that anyone named Yanni is a piano player just because the only Greek Yanni you know of is a piano player, is ... well ... culturally insensitive in itself. That is like thinking that all black people are basket ball players or all Jews are diamond merchants, or that all Russians are stupid.
However, I am a big boy and I don't get hurt by such idiocy. I consider the source and laugh it off. That's what real people do Bullshivic.
"It's ridiculous to misconstrue Yanni's statment as racist"
Please.
The description "little brown Spanish brothers and sisters" erases any validity to the original post, and as for Yanni's "clarification": when you find yourself in a hole, quit digging.
You don't have to be a lefty to find that statement objectionable.
I am shocked, "shocked I say", to see that the 'progressive' left is falling itself to defend the Chavezistas. Rabble of all places has a piece on this http://rabble.ca/link.shtml?x=59651 . They claim that the TV station had it coming for opposing the little jefe.
In unrelated news, Venezuela's economy shrinks 12% in the 4th quarter of last year; get ready to hear leftists praise Chavez for meeting his Kyoto targets.
Harper avoids talking to the Ottawa press gallery because they are a bunch of adle-brained left wing hacks that are used to being spoon fed Liberal talking points.
The media is blatantly in love with all things Liberal as this is the only party that makes a habit of awarding cushy gov't jobs to those that have "fawned" all over the Libranos in the past. (Jim Munson, Adrienne Clarkson, and so on)
Harper avoids talking to the Ottawa press gallery because they are incapable of accurately reporting his message to the Canadian citizens without twisting and manipulating his words to suit their left wing agenda. (As has been evidenced by numerous examples which have been documented on this blog and others)
Do you lefties ever get tired of always being wrong or are you so ignorant that you are incapable of noticing when you have been owned???
Oh yeah. One of the best things that could happen to this country is if the Cons got a majority and shut down the blueprint for Chavez's state run media. (aka CBC)
It is quite amusing when someone who posts under the name of Stalin's favorite mass murderer tries to compare Stephen Harper to a dictator. I was not aware that Stephen Harper was crushing dissent in Canada.
But wait though! Are you trying to say you support Stephen Harper because you believe he is like Hugo Chavez? (Pardon me if you do not support Chavez.) Or perhaps if you do not support Hugo Chavez because he is not as ruthless as communist dictatorships of the past?
As well, I suppose to some that avoiding talking to certain media outlets who tend to go out of their way to present you in a bad light is the same as using the power of an autocratic government to close said outlets down and replace them with a government run outlet that is under the control of said government. Who would have thought it!
Would you be so kind as to present us with any links where Stephen Harper has said he will shut down the CBC once he gets a majority government? Hypothetically, even if this were to occur, it is likely that the CBC would be privatized and sold to the highest bidder. Isn't this kind of the opposite of what Chavez is doing? (ie. moving the network from government control to the control of a separate entity not controlled by the government?)
I was just making an observation...don't hurt yourself trying to figure out what I do or don't support.
With respect to the CBC, at a news conference in Winnipeg on May 18, 2005, Mr Harper spoke specifically of commercializing the CBC's English TV network and Radio Two — the precursor to selling off the network.
"And I think when you look at things like main English-language television and probably to a lesser degree Radio Two, you could look there at putting those on a commercial basis."
3w.harperindex.ca/ViewArticle.cfm?Ref=0027
Privatized is basically the same as shut down. The Cons would probably try to sell the CBC to Fox. It may be opposite to what Hugo is doing, but often opposites create the same results (like acid vs. base).
And don't be so naive: any PM leading a majority gov't in Canada is a de facto dictator.
If Harper sold the CBC it would be a good thing, the state shouldn't control the media. Even if Harper sells off the CBC it will still be the same leftist hacks with no credibility blathering on all day anyway. Which is different from Chavez because he's muzzled RCTV to say what he wants.
At the end of the day I see Harper on TV enough as it is. If people don't like him they can vote him out. Good luck getting rid of Chaz in a few years.
I be surprised if Radio Venezuela Libre had not already set up in Aruba.
With respect to selling off the CBC, why would Rupert Murdoch or any other sensible businessman want to spend money on a network that nobody watches? When the rest of North America is headed digital in the next year, the present CBC hardware infrastructure will be junk. The CBC itself has already talked about shutting down its regional network. Harper is just giving the company notice that the government will not spend capital on a dinosaur.
Come to think of it, will "Radio Venezuela Libre" be set up at all? North Americans can't even get around to a little fuel bootlegging...
(Oh, I forgot. The U.S. government approves of the former, but not of the latter.)
A more serious comment: given that Chavez has covered his arse with regard to legalities, it would be wise for the U.S. government to sit back and watch Venezuela be eroded by its government. Misplaced rescue fantasies will just lend credence to the same old rants.
"All that's left then, is to follow in Argentina's military governments (failing) footsteps and declare war on someone..."
Marc, I'd bet on a war, with Argentina as an ally, against Britain, to regain the Falklands. It's a can't lose situation PR wise, even if they did lose the battle. It would also be a good test of Britain's military capability, her resolve in fighting on several fronts, Iraq, etc., and perhaps good buddy President Ahmadinejad could be enticed into throwing a few million in assistance into the mix. Would also cause George Bush great consternation.
Yep, if I was in Hugo's place, the war would be on GB, they just might win!
Phase 4 on the utopian path to the Killing fields....after private property has been surrendered to the state and the former owners now are workers with production quotas, you enforce production quotas with harsh penaties...when this fails to increase productivity, you must muzzel the media for the next state which is to "create" the productivity you lack in propaganda from a controlled press...if they do not cooperate you shut them down and blank out all info.
Kate: hate to say it but I hear the 'dozers running off in the distance.
Why is Chavez the new darling of the left? Left wingers are at best inherently intellectually lazy and more commonly intellectually void. Comrades higher up the food chain pick a side and no matter how rotten that side might be the underling left wing sycophants follow suit regardless of the reality. The left cannot let the past go. The guiding rule when Russia was utopia was that whatever the US promoted was bad. Russia is gone but the seriously over-programmed left wing useful idiots still keep tune playing the old communist skin whistle.
Chavez is not the only example. Castro who imprisons anyone who even questions his dictatorial no vote required leadership is a hero to the left. Paleostinian multi-millionaire Yasser the baby killer Arafat was a big hero. Sven Robinson would bend over backwards to please the man.
Since the muslim world hates the US, the left deems anything muslims do is good. Genocide in Darfur with muslims murdering 200,000 (or so) black Christians is a geopolitical correction. If someone has to be blamed for these deaths, it must be the fault of the United States. (Personally I think it those damned Icelanders!) If the US, Canada or Israel kills 5 terrorists who are making bombs to kill innocent non-combatant men, women and children in a market somewhere they are war criminals for killing the bomb makers. These realities, and there are dozens more, are why it is so important that left wingers are never allowed to think for themselves.
And if an argument is indefensible, play the race card. Although muslims are white, brown, black and yellow if someone doesn’t appreciate all the wonderful progressive things muslims have been doing to for earth for the last 50 years lefties can call these critics racists and achmed’s their uncle.
I didn't suggest or imply your "free speech" need be restricted because of your posting; in my opinion it was objectionable and negated the points of your argument.

Bingo. The first lefty appears trying to deal the racist card. Not working, my friend. You need to play that game elsewhere.
It's ridiculous to misconstrue Yanni's statment as racist.

You apparently live in a narrow, restrictive, repressive state. You are the type who would find almost anything other than CBC pablum offensive.
I, on the other hand, live free, speak freely and enjoy a relatively unrestricted life.
No guilt, no apology ... just like it's supposed to be here in North America.
With out freedom, nothing else matters .. just like health.
I have also improved on New Hampshire's "Live Free or Die" slogan.
It goes like this ...
"Give me freedom or give me a gun to shoot you with"
Yanni
