An article recently published in “Scientific America” makes the important announcement that the climate of the North American continent is gradually getting warmer notwithstanding the influence of certain “Sun Spots”. There would appear to be some foundaiton for such a belief, for only lately the Guardian carried an item calling attention to the fact that in Alaska the flowers are now in bloom and the farmers there are breaking the soil for this season’s crop. Similar news has appeared in other journals corroborating the truth of this important discovery.

UPDATE – “You will SUBMIT or I will crush your scientific dissent like a petulant fruit fly between my nails…” (link fixed)
Dr. Mugabe would be so proud.

So what discounts all the cold weather and frozen California produce?
Wow, talk about yr tight cycles of history. So I should put all my money in the Morgan Bank and RCA Victor right about now?
“So I should put all my money in the Morgan Bank and RCA Victor right about now?”
I believe the smart money is on Consolidated Hay…
Great find. There has been anomolous weather forever….all you ever see are anomolies from a mean, that is reality doesnt exist. Like the average Canadian family….2.something kids and certain amount of income….the family doesnt exist except mathematically.
Weather bounces around a mean to yeld a climate, whic is largely about broad experiences.
Not to be one for conspiracy theories but I believe they were counting on the EL Nino to deliver warmer winter. That hasnt happened for the length of time that they wanted. Look for them the believers to point to warmer than average WINTER, stretching it back to November, rather than what will come out is a colder winter than normal, on average, and a colder start to 2007 than average.
The science isnt DONE, per Mr Suzuki, and not just as a delay but in terms of opposite conclusions. Just give it time, the believers cannot sustain a full throated shrill for a long time. Jumping the shark time is coming.
I remember a few years back freak ice storms froze the southern US orange crop making organge juice futures go through the roof…was that a mini- ice age that went whipping through on us?
Actually, I think we get these “mini-ice ages” every year where I was raised…they came once a year and were followed by a climatic warming trend which continued until about mid August when we saw the start of another cooling trend which led us to another mini ice age…it was rumored in my school days that this climate change was due completely to sun activity or lack of it.
I wonder if the current climate change cult has had a look at this phenomina…it still seems to be going on where I used to live. đ
Does anyone know if the temperature on the moon has gone up or down in the last decade?
Ted
Why, yes, Ted, I believe the temperature on the moon has varied over the years…one side is cold and the other is hot. If the moon had an atmosphere, then we might have been able to assess the impact of the sun on global warming.
But…no atmosphere, no global warming. So, instead, we look to Mars which DOES have an atmosphere and…lo and behold…the ice caps are shrinking! Golly, evidence of global warming that is likely caused by the sun’s activity!
Thanks for that, Ted! /sarc

It was actually a serious question. If “sun spots” were responsible for increased temperature here then you would see a corresponding increase on the moon. I know the temperature on the moon ranges from -171° C to 111° C each year (http://www.kidscosmos.org/kid-stuff/moon-facts.html) but does anyone know of any studies of year-over-year comparison studies.
Mars is also a good example, Eeyore. Do you have a citation or link to a study?
Ted
can someone post a video of Captain Figleaf storming out of the news conferance.
how dare anyone question the dogma of the high priest of global warming and fruit flys.
Ted…your question may be serious…but go back and dig out you Grade 1 science text..as others have said…NO ATMOSPHERE..NO WEATHER…the moon can no more have tornadoes, hurricanes etc. then moonbats can have coherent thoughts. Why do you think all those craters are still there on the Moon’s surface? No ATMOSPHERE, NO WIND to cause erosion and smooth them out.
he sounded pretty pissy on the interview….i suspect he is angrier at his publicist for booking him on Oakley’s show….What amazes me is there is an unwillingness to debate, just pejoratives now…linked to Big Oil and “creationists”, “flat earthers” etc.
Unfortunate to see. Absolute unwillingness to debate and I just dont see the science as definitive, smoking science was, Ozone CFC scinece was, Acid Rain science was….but this isnt solid yet….not by any measure.
Find me a predictive model and then I will believe him.
Pissy, indeed.
I was surprised how annoying he seemed to me, then i realized i’ve spent years successfully avoiding the twerp, turning the page, changing the channel. And that ain’t easy in Canada. It’s worth it, though.
Sorry, Ted, I just assumed you were being an a__hole. My suspicions are that year-over-year measurements may be available, but the sample size would be small and the length of time for accurate measurements so short as to not yield statistically significant trends.
As for Mars, I am not aware of any reports…just anecdotal-type observations reported in print and on TV presumably sourced from NASA. But, if it helps, there seems to be a “broad consensus among scientists” that the ice at the poles is shrinking…so that should be good enough, eh?
Hmmm…that gets me to thinking…when they say “broad consensus”, are they referring to consensus amongst women?
Eeyore, me? an a-hole? Thanks for the more serious response. I’ll let you know if I come across anything. I tend to like to substantiate things for myself.
Justthinkin’ – sorry, clearly you aren’t. You are making the same mistake too many in the MSM and even lefties make in equating CLIMATE with WEATHER. Justsayin’.
Ted
David Suzuki throws a hissy fit on John Oakley’s show on AM 640.

Suzuki walks out of AM640 after global warming debate
Feb, 15 2007 – 3:20 PM
TORONTO – Turns out noted environmental activist Dr David Suzuki isn’t as mild mannered as you may have thought. He stormed out of our studios this morning after a debate with host John Oakley over the merits of the Kyoto Accord. Suzuki says whether the Harper government agrees or not, Canada is already on board with the plan. Oakley says he welcomes all voices in the debate. Suzuki countered by asking if he’d welcome a creationist to chat about evolution.
———-
I’ll try to hunt down the audio. Suzuki evidently said something really stupid about China’s polution – something about the west screwing them up, so it’s OK.
Melting arctic areas leads to unstable air masses moving creating unstable weather for certain areas. But the sun spot activity is part of a cycle that is going up but will come down. In other words, today’s warming could be tomorrow’s cooling too. The enviroweenies hope that nobody figures this out before global socialism is fully implemented.
Matt:
A link to it was already posted a bit down in the “Readers Tips” post.
http://svenskacanuck.blogspot.com/2007/02/fruit-fly-guy-implodes.html
That blog has a link to the actual audio file.
Oh, and the stupid remark he made about China, and other developing economies, was that since the West got rich by polluting the environment it is the responsiblity of the West to pay to clean it up. Then once China, and others, have economies that match ours we can bring them inline with the environmental policy.
Suzuki is a complete tool.
this climate change thing just gets nuttier by the second.

Here’s another report from the Global Warming Deniers”
http://www.newswise.com/articles/view/527313
—
A new report on climate over the worldâs southernmost continent shows that temperatures during the late 20th century did not climb as had been predicted by many global climate models.
This comes soon after the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that strongly supports the conclusion that the Earthâs climate as a whole is warming, largely due to human activity.
It also follows a similar finding from last summer by the same research group that showed no increase in precipitation over Antarctica in the last 50 years. Most models predict that both precipitation and temperature will increase over Antarctica with a warming of the planet.
David Bromwich, professor of geography and researcher with the Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State University, reported on this work at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science at San Francisco.
âItâs hard to see a global warming signal from the mainland of Antarctica right now,â he said. âPart of the reason is that there is a lot of variability there. Itâs very hard in these polar latitudes to demonstrate a global warming signal. This is in marked contrast to the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula that is one of the most rapidly warming parts of the Earth.â
Bromwich says that the problem rises from several complications. The continent is vast, as large as the United States and Mexico combined. Only a small amount of detailed data is available â there are perhaps only 100 weather stations on that continent compared to the thousands spread across the U.S. and Europe. And the records that we have only date back a half-century.
âThe best we can say right now is that the climate models are somewhat inconsistent with the evidence that we have for the last 50 years from continental Antarctica.

I have floated this idea b4, and was treated like an idiot by the librano/dipper crowd, but here goes again…let’s slap massive ENVIRONMENTAL/LABOR TARIFFS on everything made in the third world….it would force china, india etc to clean up their act, and make our industry more competitive….screw Kyoto, screw chairman mo, screw citoyen bombardion
For anyone interested. THis article By Lorrie Goldstien. Pretty well sum’s up how the criminal party of this Nation known as Liberals, have snookered the whole population. Its their template too power.
http://www.torontosun.com/News/Columnists/Goldstein_Lorrie/2007/02/15/3626603.html
Here is the process Sowell describes by which the liberal “anointed” — who typically believe they alone possess the wisdom to govern — constantly seek to impose their views on society.
Judge for yourself whether Sowell’s four-step process accurately reflects how the Liberals have handled this issue.
Stage 1: The anointed declare “the crisis” in which, Sowell observes, “some situation exists, whose negative aspects the anointed propose to eliminate. Such a situation is routinely characterized as a ‘crisis’ even though all human situations have negative aspects …”
Stage 2: “The solution” is proposed in which “policies to end the ‘crisis’ are advocated by the anointed” who dismiss claims by critics that their proposals won’t work or may even make things worse as “absurd and ‘simplistic,’ if not dishonest.”
Stage 3: “The results” reveal “the solution” chosen by the anointed either didn’t work, or made things worse.
Stage 4: The anointed give “the response” to their critics, in which they dismiss them for being “simplistic” and for “ignoring the ‘complexities’ involved as ‘many factors’ went into determining the outcome.”
Would anyone here think that a poll that used a 90% confidence intervaal versus a 95% confidence interval was useful….the polling industry doesnt
so when they say 90% sure that human activity is contributing to Global Warming thats what they are saying…byt the way they dont say it is the complete cause ever.
So Dr Suzuki, relying on your vaunted IPCC report, whixh by the way is a summary, the report doesnt come out till May, is saying they are 90% sure that Human Activity is a major contributor.
That is not a strong endorsement. It is not a debate is closed report, esepcially when you look at how many things are listed as being not well understood, how they have lowered their predictions and fudged things.
I know when I am being sold something, and this is one of those times. Yes I think they planned on a push to get governments to move.
The longer we resist the less tenable their position will become….thats why the stridency

Here’s a link to the piece on Mars warming:
http://www.heartland.org/Article.cfm?artId=17977
The study is based on data collected by NASA, and they are not known generally as climate change deniers. They do believe greenhouse gases have some effect on the Earth’s climate, but that the link may not be as strong as once thought.
It appears to me that more deniers come out after the terminology change to climate change started to appear. Every one has experienced four climate changes a year all their life, winter, spring, summer and fall. We have all experienced weather change, rain, snow, heat, to name a few. Some have experienced floods, hurricanes, tornadoes.
We have sunny days, cloudy days, rainy and snowy days. In southern Alberta we have chinooks where the temp can flucuate over 40 degrees F in hours.
Sailors have had calm and stormy seas.
We have all survived these changes and enjoyed them. So, why should we panic when an idiot like suzuke says all hell will break lose with climate change. What the world need more than ever now, to make these idiots get back to their computers and models, (maybe female ones would solve some of their problems) is a good old fashioned volcano that spews ash for a week at least, and foul up all measurerments of whatever in the air. Climate and weather change is a fact of life. Businesses depend on it. Remember the cries from the ski resorts in Ont when it didn’t snow. Notice the complaints from hardware stores when snow shovels etc were not selling. Suzuki want to put these guys out of business forever.
And again, thanks to Buzz for his greedy contracts causing massive layoffs in Ont auto sector, that will lead to great co2 reductions by that unemployed workforce. And dion wants everyone to be unemployed to reduce emmissons.
Ted,
From what I’ve read, it’s not sunspots that directly effects the temperature. You might want to look at cosmic rays and solar winds. Take a good read of this and start your searches from there:

Suzuki a tool? I guess when Mo Strong is on your board one can join the dots. Suzuki is a shill for the PRC – that’s The People’s Republic of China, where Mo lives. Its “war” by other means, economic warfare without the bombs, a “nice” way to kill your competition off. Kyoto is Mo Strong’s way of killing off PRC competition from western democracies, well maybe not Canada, it’s not a “real” democracy, but the US anyway. We are down wind from the puking Chinese coal-fired power plants, we get acid rain courtesy of the PRC, another tactic to ruin our environment for us and make us clean up their mess, over here. Boycott China or sic Greenpeace on ’em with that little eco-jihadi spouting off on Youtube yesterday about how adults ruined his chances of utopia.
