GREEN LOBBY MUST BE TREATED AS A RELIGION
By John Kay
“”Anthropologists have established how different cultures independently evolve similar myths â familiar stories, such as the myth of the Fall and the myth of the Apocalypse, which meet deep-seated human needs. The Christian tradition describes the temptation of Adam and Eve and warns of the Last Judgment.
In Europe, these stories no longer have the impact they did. Environmentalism now fulfils for many people the widespread longing for simple, all-encompassing narratives. Environmentalism offers an alternative account of the natural world to the religious and an alternative anti-capitalist account of the political world to the Marxist. The rise of environmentalism parallels in time and place the decline of religion and of socialism.””

This is the interesting end part of a CBC article about the woes of American auto makers and future plans.
cbc.ca/news/background/autos/bigthree.html
Will GM and Ford be able to turn it around? The automakers, of course, say yes. Analysts say they’ll need to chop vehicles, models or brands that are unprofitable (much as GM announced the phase-out of its Oldsmobile brand in 2000). They’ll also need to modernize an outdated dealer network and boost investment in their remaining plants and products.
As part of that investment, GM announced a $2.5 billion program in March 2005 to upgrade plants and boost research and development in Ontario. In November 2005, DaimlerChrysler said it would invest $768 million to upgrade and modernize its Ontario operations.
======= Gradually, ever so gradually ===== TG
And, as industry aficionados gathered in Detroit for the 2007 North American International Auto Show, GM announced it was working on a lithium-ion battery that would significantly boost the gas mileage of hybrid sport utility vehicles. GM’s Saturn Vue Green Line gets about 13.5 kilometres per litre on the highway. The new battery could more than double that to 30.
=== Li is misleading =meaning, pay royalty to large format NiMH patent holder, Chevron? See TonyGuitar.blogspot.com === TG
Meanwhile, Canadian and American automotive journalists chose Saturn’s Aura and Chevrolet’s Silverado as the car and truck of year. The Aura beat the Honda Fit and Toyota Camry for the award. The Silverado was picked over the Ford Edge and Mazda CX-7 crossovers.
The honours have been handed out annually since 1994. Japanese and European brands have taken top marks seven times. With this year’s wins, North American carmakers have also come out on top seven times.
=== Hint, buy American. Malibu, Impala and Cobalt are good value.= TG

The beauty of the ‘net is that Kinsella can be bitch-whipped so effectively and it is there for the world to see. I think Warren is still living in the pre internet age when his talking points were given to him by da boss and any playing field he entered was guaranteed to be tilted in his favor (more help from da boss). Flushed with the success of having to respond to faux softball criticism, and being able to dish out all manner of character assassinations without repercussions, Warren began to believe he in fact was as good as the national media pimped him to be. Apparently still suffering from the same delusion.

Globe | Ont. dairy farmers rally against raw milk
When Michael Schmidt appears in court some time in February, dairy farmers in Ontario will be following the proceedings keenly.
Here’s some more info about anti-environment Big Chemical lobbyist Warren Kinsella from Ont. Leg. Hansard:
Mr. Howard Hampton (Kenora-Rainy River): My question is for the Minister of the Environment. We know the McGuinty government is not listening to autistic children and their parents, but you are listening to someone quite powerful. In October you brought forward Bill 133, your spill bill, and you were very rhetorical, saying this was going to be leading edge, but in the meantime we’ve learned that a powerful coalition formed to lobby behind the scenes wants you to water down the bill. Today you have said that the bill is not going forward for debate; you’re going to shuffle it off to committee. Who is leading this lobby? Why, it’s the Premier’s personal fixer, Warren Kinsella, senior adviser to the Liberal election campaign. Minister, who are you listening to: ordinary Ontarians, who want you to protect the environment, or Warren Kinsella, who is lobbying for the chemical industry?
Hon. Leona Dombrowsky (Minister of the Environment): I’m very proud to say that this government is listening to the people of Ontario, particularly those people who have been impacted by industrial spills, who have had their water intakes shut down. That is why we introduced the penalties bill. If passed, it will provide resources directly to communities so people in those communities will be compensated when these horrible incidents take place.
Mr. Hampton: I think people are already putting their money on Warren Kinsella.
Here is the situation: You bring forward Bill 133, about six months ago, with lots of rhetoric, a virtual crescendo of rhetoric, and then for six months it languishes on the order paper. Nothing happens. On March 14, Warren Kinsella signs up as the lobbyist for the chemical industry, which wants this bill watered down. Now, just days later, the bill doesn’t come forward for debate; it goes out the side door to committee. Groups like the Canadian Chemical Producers’ Association, the Canadian Foundry Association and the Canadian Petroleum Products Institute are very happy .
Minister, is it just a coincidence that mere days after the Premier’s personal election guru, Warren Kinsella, signs up for these groups, your Bill 133 goes sideways instead of coming forward for debate?

That’s an excellent article by the Belmont Club. Effectively, they are now, correctly in my view, locating Islamic fascism within a socioeconomic upheaval and transformation within the ME states.
That is, the ME didn’t move out of tribalism into a civic mode of governance when Europe did and what we are now seeing, is the difficulties of that transformation.
I have a few differences from the Belmont analysis. I think that the West began the transformation out of tribalism and into a civic mode much earlier than the 19th century (that was the movement into industrialism; the West was already civic). It began that in the 12th century and earlier. But, it took four to five hundred years to move out of tribalism into a civic mode.
The ME has been tribal for centuries and it had never been industrial; it had only a sustenance peasant agriculture. It was only when oil was discovered after the World Wars, with oil the energy resource of industrialism, that the region ‘awoke’. But it didn’t move into a civic mode; instead, its tribalism moved into a dictatorial tribalism, where one tribe takes control by virtue of its capacity to control the oil funds, purchase a military and rule the country.
This inflames the powerless population – who move into fascism.
The article is, however, very accurate in its linking of France with Islamic fascism. The ties between Marxism and Islamic fascism are that both are utopian ideologies and socialist ideologies. Both reject individualism and self-accountability, self-sufficiency; both are apocalpytic, both are future-oriented rejecting the present; both set up an Evil Adversary. And both reject dissent insisting on fanaticism in belief. There’s not much difference between Marxism and Islamic fascism.
An excellent article.
Shaw pulls millions out of Canadian TV fund
CEO tired of subsidizing CBC
Deirdre McMurdy, The Ottawa Citizen
Published: Thursday, January 11, 2007
Jim Shaw is ticked off.
The CEO of Shaw Communications is tired of subsidizing the CBC. He’s frustrated by spending five per cent of his company’s annual revenues on television programs no one watches. He refuses to pay broadcasters a fee-for-carriage of their signals as well as part of the freight on their production costs. And he’s prepared to blatantly breach CRTC regulations to make his point.
As the result of a typically blunt letter written by the burly, Harley-riding cable executive on Dec. 20, there are an awful lot of people scuttling about in the private and public sectors: Their fear is that Mr. Shaw’s aggressive stance may set a precedent for other disgruntled cable companies.
The letter, obtained by the Citizen, expresses Mr. Shaw’s “dissatisfaction” with the “performance, operations and governance” of the Canadian Television Fund.
That dissatisfaction has a steep price tag: about $56 million a year.
As the largest private sector contributor to the fund (all cable operators are required to contribute five per cent of their revenues to the fund, less the amount they spend on community initiatives), Shaw Communications is refusing to pay another nickel unless there is an immediate restructuring.
Noting that “over the past 10 years, Shaw has contributed over $350 million in direct subsidies to the Canadian production industry,” Mr. Shaw observes the fund “has become nothing more than a means of subsidizing broadcasters, pay and specialty services and independent producers to produce Canadian television programming that few watch and has no commercial or exportable value.”
(Shaw claims that its Star Choice satellite television division now pays more to the fund than it returns to shareholders.)
…
Is Kinsella changing his spots?
To lose a dick measuring contest shows he didn’t cheat, after all he could have enhanced himself by swallowing the magic potion. That would be the Liberal way.

OTTAWA – Federal governments of all political stripes collected only 17% of the $7-billion in loans it issued to corporations over the past quarter century, a study from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation suggests.
Overall, $18.4-billion was dished out by Ottawa to companies, either through loans or grants, from 1982 to March 31, 2006, the study, released yesterday, said. As expected, aerospace companies were the big recipients of federal aid. Pratt &Whitney Canada Corp. , the engine maker, and Bombardier Inc., the transport giant, ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, collectively accepting $2.2-billion in aid…

Quebec Liberal MP Jean Lapierre is leaving federal politics to enter broadcasting, further boosting the prospects of the minority Conservative government.

The 50-year-old Lapierre will be out of politics by the end of January, The Canadian Press reports, in order to join Montreal’s TVA television network. …
Many have speculated that Justin Trudeau is making a bid for the seat, though he has not confirmed the rumours….

Had she kept to her usual short snarks in response, I dunno, maybe, but a long essay shows Kinsella must have hit a little too close to the bone.
Now, these two ain’t producing no Donald and Rosie fireworks (Kathy comes close to a Rosie stand-in but Warren’s moving in the opposite direction as Donald in the hair dept, catching up to me in fact), like that kindergarden squabble, the only thing accomplished by these silly and entirely ego-driven vanity public flame wars is to make both participants look even sillier and petty-er than we already thought they were.
No, the real “stupid is forever” here is that public personalities will always think that these things can be “won” or can work to redeem oneself from the other’s nasty comments. Always better not to respond to them. Best not to start them. There are only losers.
At least for the participants. For us readers, it’s just pure entertainment so maybe we’re the winners.

The hissing snakes of Islam:
Muslims have more right to Australia: sheik
By 7News
Sydney Muslim leader Sheik Taj el-Din al Hilaly has set off a new controversy, claiming Muslims have more right to be in Australia than the descendants of convicts. On Arabic television, he said westerners were the world’s biggest liars and accused the media of trying to bring him down.
The sheik was invited to appear on Egyptian television to explain his sermon comparing women who show some skin, to uncovered pieces of meat that invite predators.
At the time, Sheikh al Hilaly claimed his comments were taken out of context, but on Today in Cairo he defended the remarks, blaming the media for the national outcry.
“This is a calculated conspiracy aimed at terrorising our Islamic community, aimed at me first in order to bring the Islamic community to its knees,” Sheik Hilaly said in Arabic.
I’m hoping this slimy little garter snake’s time on earth will be cut short by the decendants of ‘convicts.’

Wow, that long post indicates that Warren “hit close to home”? (That’s the word you’re looking for, not “bone” btw). Do share more of your startlingly original insights into human nature with us, Ted.
I don’t mind you trying to catch a ride on my coat tails; one has to take occasional pity on the less fortunate…
“The affinity between Marxism and Islamism, both religions in rebellion against the faiths and cultures from which they sprung, in form may spring from the fact that they share the same function.”
The most divisive and dangerous locations in NA and Europe are our college campuses where year after year our youth are exposed to unchallenged Marxist garbage. We place our impressionable 18 year olds in front of these self-loathing leftists at their most impressionable and normally rebellious time in their lives.
I have no objection to Marxism being studied or scrutinized. I do object that it almost never is debated with in an open, unbiased forum where arriving at the truth is the objective using empiricism which Marxism would never withstand with honest scrutiny. Marxism instead is romanticized and protected from scrutiny. Add poor critical thinking skills, agenda driven history courses and the anti-capitalistic MSM which loathes patriotism and you have the perfect recipe for a population that can’t define or thwart evil effectively.
It’s no surprise that self-loathing leftist nihilists are unable to define Islamofascism as evil.
See now that’s more like it, Kathy. The short drive-by snarks. Quicker to the point with a sharper edge. Much more in character.
I must say though, you are usually a lot more original and witty in your snarks than you were with your essay on Warren or your response to me above. Accusing someone of trolling just because they criticize or are just criticizing for “hits” is a bit tired. Especially when I’ve more or less shut my site down (I add the tag because there is another Ted who sometimes comments here and don’t want to be misidentified). So I’m a bit disappointed that I don’t merit some your typical highly original wit, and instead just get a rehashing direct insults. I’ll bring my stuffed dinosaur next time.
Where did I say you or he won? I said you both lose. I’m not sticking up for Warren or trying to take you on. That you have an echo chamber saying yes, yes, yes, means about as much as a partisan saying their guy or gal “won” the debate. Debating who “won” a silly and embarrassing flame war just makes it sillier and more embarrassing.
Where did I say I don’t like it? It’s highly entertaining watching public personalities with big egos make bigger fools of themselves. It’s more interesting and entertaining when you are actually famous in the larger public, like the Donald-Rosie example, but still… pass the popcorn.

Note also, that another Liberal is leaving the Liberal Party – LaPierre. He’s leaving politics. It’s in the G&M; the Toronto Star is pretending it didn’t happen.
I’m speculating that Dion’s win was not welcomed by many in the Liberal Party. It was a delegate but not a membership election – and I think the fallout is going to be quite disturbing to the Liberal Party. I’m suggesting we’ll see more people leaving – not necessarily to join the CPC or NDP. But leaving.
Dion will try to fill those gaps with “his People’ but I think it will be difficult.
How long, for example, will Ignatieff stay? He has lots better things to do – he can’t leave right now; but, if some neat offer comes along from Harvard or…why shouldn’t he grab it? I can’t see Rae running.

By the way, Jason Cherniak’s ‘take’ on Jean LaPierre’s leaving the Liberal Party is that it is part of a ‘plan’ to open up seats for Big Names for the Liberal Party. That is, the leavings are not due to any dissatisfaction with Dion or the Liberals, but are a political agenda to get seats for people like Rae, Findlay and Gerard Kennedy!
This strategy, as pointed out by someone on his blog, would be an unethical abuse of the political system and the taxpayer’s money. To encourage MPs to leave, to open up their seats to a by-election, so that you can put in your Big Name candidates to bolster your party for a federal election – that’s unethical.
Cherniak is desperately trying to show that the bleeding from the Liberal Party is not due to wounds but is actually, a deliberate donation of blood To a Good Cause.

Morality in politics
January 8, 2007
Stephen Harper is the most moral Canadian prime minister in Canadian history.
It is morality that motivates his stand against same-sex marriage and his support for the war in Afghanistan. It’s morality that drives him to take on his Bay Street pals on the issue of income trusts.
If there were any doubt this prime minister is driven by morality rather than the almighty buck, his dealings with communist China should lay them to rest. …
Of all Western countries, Canada had the worst record on Jewish refugees. That was underlined by the famous “voyage of the damned,” when the SS St. Louis, loaded with thousands of Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany, was turned away from the port of Montreal.
This was the playing out of moral politics of the worst kind: The Liberals were literally playing with people’s lives. …
Harper is not a cynic in politics. He is a Christian moralist, first and foremost. …-
