I signed it, but contrary to other opinions, I think only the last WW1 Veteran should be honoured, to represent all WW1 Veterans. It would make it a more powerful reminder to all of us. Three state funerals, would dilute the impact. Last man standing!
The white poppy issue is heating up, The RCLegion has issued a infringment on copyright order to cease & decist.
The interesting note on the article CTV.CA(sarah galashan) is that Peace Activist are SELLING the white poppy & the Monies raised go out of the country to a Peace Organization in England.
Monies raised by DONATION for the RCL Poppy Stay In Canada to support Veterans needs.
The Red Poppy does not promote war, It is in Remberance of those who fought for the freedoms that Canadians enjoy today.
Yes these brave Men & Women some of whom gave the Ultimate Sacrifice have given these groups the privelidge to Advocate Peace, However we are talking about Rememberance.
Whats going to be next Anti-War Rallies during solemn memorials at cenotaph's on the 11Th.
This is nothing more then a slap in the face of these brave men & women, there is a time & a place to promote peace, however this is not it.
The Left(taliban jack)should be happy with Bill Clinton,
During a speech last night he Advocated for Canada & Nato to hold the line in Aphganistan, if we leave he said we are only inviting the Taliban to comeback to have there tyranny & harbor Terrorist that would be a threat to N.American Security.
So to the left:
Which is it Stay or Out? You can't have both.
Make up Your Minds, Are the Taliban a threat or Not?
Considering that one of the five bronze statues at the Valiants Memorial depicts Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville, "who captured the English outpost at Fort York," it would have seemed fitting that a statue of more important figures from our military past be included. James Wolfe springs to mind, of course. Lieutenant-General Guy Simonds, Commander of II Canadian Corps whom Montgomery called the best tactical strategist on the British and Canadian side in World War Two, also deserves a place of honour. He was made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1970. When Simonds died in 1974, neither Pierre Trudeau nor James Richardson, Minister of Defence at the time, attended the funeral.
It does seem that political sensitivities always have to take precedence in this country, even if it means propping up second and third rate "heroes."

bryanr, there is a whole spectrum of views to "the left" of you. It is ridiculous to demand that all those who disagree with you (from "the left") must agree with each other. I personally do not agree on much of anything with Bill Clinton and I disagree on fundamental issues with Jack Layton. Let me repeat: it is not rational to expect that there be only one point of view to the left of you, that everyone to the left of you must agree. Let me expand: to the left of you, there are liberals, social democrats, marxists (a diverse category in itself), anarchists, communitarians, etc. These represent different political philosophies. They certainly do not all agree. Contrary to what you are told by Fox News, there are more than two ways of construing the world!
Ok so i put all of the left on the same scale so what's your point?
The left never has a problem with putting someone from the right as radical Christians, Redneck, warmongers need i go on.
As for Fox I don't watch it, However iam bombarded with attacks on the political Right by the Left Leaning Media in Canada Why? only One Point of View, Their's.
I was speaking to my father (a veteran) about this issue yesterday - His opinion - that these vets should be honoured now, while alive - that we should not be planning their funerals.
Perhaps we should devote a little less time and effort to burying these men, and a little more to honouring their contributions to our society.

My point is that there is no "the Left". There is a diverse spectrum of views to the left of you. Similarly, there is a diverse spectrum of views to the right of me. It would be ridiculous for me to expect everyone to the right of me to agree or to attribute something said or done by one of them to all.
(The Canadian media are far to the right of me. I agree though that we are subjected to a relentless stream of propaganda.)
I like the idea but the veterans family needs to have the final say on how he should be buried. And if they choose privacy in a small church somewhere, we should all be respectful.

I don't want to get into some kind patriotic argument over this but, as far as I know the remaining veterans were all underage and did not actually serve in conflict overseas.
taliban jack bin layton is a wart on this countries backside that needs removing and should not even be mentioned in polite conversation, I spit in his general direction...along with billybob clinton who is nothing more than an ordinary everyday run of the mill pig. absolutely nothing patriotic about either of these weasels
RE keeping the poppy in place - my children when they were younger devised a great method - they used those tiny Canadian lapel pins to secure the poppy, it also looks good with the flag in the middle of the poppy.

Why this blog? Until this moment
I have been forced
to listen while media

have told me
"what Canadians think".
In all that time they
never once asked.
This is just the voice
of an ordinary Canadian

Don't worry Hunter, the petition is for the last veteran that dies, not the last three.
"celebrated by offering a state funeral to the family of the last veteran of the First World War resident in Canada" - The Dominion Institute
another twisted CBCpravda headline.
Fewer Canadians 'strongly approve' of military presence in Afghanistan: survey
lets set up a petition to cut CBCs funds.
"CBCpravda -all Liberal, all the time"

Another reason why I signed the petition.

Over 34,000 when I checked a couple of minutes ago.

An interesting idea, however.
Adrian,
A lot of under ager fought in WWI and WWII.
They didn't exactly have computer records back then, so a person could lie about their age and get in or use an older siblings name, etc.
You probably don't know for a fact that they didn't fight, do you?

If Australians can have a full State Funeral for Ted Matthews and all his fellow ANZAC Gallipoli campaigners, then we can do it.

I don't care how many poppies I buy and lose.I respect all those who served this country.Thank you.
