Much of the news of this week reinforced the fact that political superficiality is second only to opportunism as defining characteristics of the Liberal party (which by default, includes much of Canadian media).
That said, I confess my curiosity was aroused by this headline;
"Trudeau mobbed at Liberal rally".
"Could it be?" I thought to myself.
As it turns out, this was not the unveiling of the most ambitious embalming project since Lenin. (Talk about "life of the convention"!)
No - just another story quoting the giddy exhalations of the dead politician's eldest y-chromosome beneficiary;
"I feel like a rock star," [Justin]Trudeau said to himself as he signed autographs at an event meant to fire up support for Glen Pearson in tomorrow's byelection in London-North Centre.Pearson spoke, too, at his campaign headquarters in a strip mall on Adelaide Street, paying respects to the main attraction.
"We have someone in our midst who someday may be prime minister . . . We are in the presence of royalty," Pearson said. "Thank you for giving us this big boost,"
And I thought this week's "Celebrate Liberal Irrelevancy" media event had already been claimed by CBC's The National, in bringing the meaningless opinions of Alexandre Trudeau on the "Quebecois nation" motion in Parliament to a national audience.
For those too disinterested to tell them apart, "Sasha" is the second[1] of the Trudeau sons. He recently shared these and other personal insights into Cuban dictator Fidel Castro ;
"Combined with a Herculean physique and extraordinary personal courage, this monumental intellect makes Fidel the giant that he is."
I and other Canadians waited patiently over the commercial break for followup segments with Ben Mulroney and Catherine Clark, but alas....
Footnote:
[1] The third and youngest Trudeau son is perhaps best known for his valiant, but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to have a lake in British Columbia named after him.

The third son of PET should get a job.
If the Liberals think he is royalty then that bar has been set very low.
As far as the breathless worship of the ne'er do well, the CBC always finds a new way to be irrelevant.
Who cares? No-one I know, that's for sure...
This , your Honour, goes to motive...i say this proves all along that the Liberals were less interested in governance, than in maintaining the cult of personality..
Here, for the first time in decades, we have a PM who is effective, strong and decisive.....and all liberals can do is bleat and bray about an ideologically challenged offspring of the most destructive man ever unleashed upon the people of Canada...
If this is all they have to offer, people, please....give the Conservatives the majority they truly deserve to help right this listing ship that PET and his ilk did their best to scuttle..
He spoke at my university a while back.
I felt dirty for the rest of the day just being there.
The Liberals are just dying for their righteous white knight (sorry, we're multi-cultural...um..."technicolor" knight) to ride on in and route the big bad Conservatives! If only Trudeau had been running against Harper instead of Martin! If Only!
Heh. Give me a break. Harper would have sent Justin packing with his political diapers. Get used to it Liberals - Trudeau is dead (thank God) and he's not coming back.
Mr. Trudeau should run on a platform of paying back the debt, and the accumulated interest on that debt, that his father incurred.
Trudeau will go down in history as about the worst PM this country ever had.
If his son were to be the Liberal leader, that would almost guarnatee the Liberals a long stay in total irrelivance, with the NDP.
Get lost, loser.
I very well remember the Media's hype and gush and bullshit over Pierre Ediot Trudeau in 1968. The Media "made" the man, and PM.
It is so laughable to see them attempting it again. For two reasons.
1) Thirty years since 1968 and it is so easy to see the Folly, Hoax and Failure that Trudeau's rein was. How could anyone want to be associated with the man. Especially the Media.
2) What is even more laughable is the Media's thinking that it can scam us once again. They must truly be living in a bubble. The Internet and Blogs of today instantly call the MSM on their BS, Slant, Lies, ...
Even the CEO of Quebecor has just admitted that that "NEWSPAPERS CAUGHT IN NET" So telling, coming from Quebecor, amongst other endevors an OLD Media giant.
Ah, yes the Media. "None So Blind AS Those That Will Not See".
Dante, don't write the rock star off too easily. The MM is grooming him for one of the two big thrones in Ottawa. Expect to see him a Senator sooner than you think and after that the exalted one will have his pick. The Liberal Business Cartel is back of this you can be sure. If we had an independent Press some of the behind the scenes maneuvers would be revealed.
Way out in the western hinterland here, a mountain was named after the father (of Canada). Nothing was heard of this until it was a done deed, and then it was on page 15.
If he is royalty, as Glen Pearson says, then he should join the armed forces and serve in Afganistan as a real member of the Royal Family would. Just a thought...
a turdeau in uniform....please, stop, i am gagging...the only uniform u will ever see on any of those commie sob's will have a red star on it.....i wore a uniform during the turdeau years, and i can tell u it was no picnic...i can guarantee not one of those cowards would ever join their country's armed forces.....GO ARMY
I'll take second place to no-one in my dislike for the Trudeau era, and although I don't know any of the sons personally, this focus on them by the MSM is an odd combination of sappy and ghoulish. . . .
BUT- the nasty remarks about the death of the youngest both by Kate and some of the commenters are unworthy and cheap.
I agree that Trudeau and his ilk were not in the least bit beneficial for Canada. The media have however made the name into a franchise for the Liberal party and people who know little about politics, policy, freedom or democracy hold the Trudeau name up as a symbol of Canada. If this little weasel ever runs for the Liberal leadership I have little doubt that he would garner a large following of sheeple.
When PET died my little sister lamented what a loss it was to Canada. I asked her what it was that she liked about him and what she felt was his biggest contribution to Canada was. Her response was similar to what I would expect from any Liberal supporter...she did not have a clue what he had done for (or to) Canada. All she knew was the he was famous in the media, cruised in a Canoe, and thought of himself as a playboy who nailed women that were it not for his political clout would be out of his reach.
My point being that people that vote Liberal are by and large politically ignorant and vote the way the media tells them to.
Maybe the Trudeau gang will get dissalusioned with a Conservative Canada and all move to Cuba the greatest place on earth with its own ""Leader with a Herculean physique and extraordinary personal courage, this monumental intellect makes Fidel the giant that he is."
Its not nice to speak poorly of the dead but PET is dead now if he would just go away Canada would be much richer for it.
"The third son of PET should get a job."
As what, fertilizer? He's DEAD you twit. At least render Kate the courtesy of following the links in her posts before you comment on them to save space in her comments and yourself embarrassment.
I suppose I should have been more politically correct and simply noted that we mourned the loss of the future "Ted Kennedy of Canadian political Royalty".
C'mon Sean - you're smart enough to recognize what's an obvious typo/error. (Besides - don't you mean
fishf... stop it..bad Kate...)Dante said: "Trudeau is dead (thank God) and he's not coming back." BTW, to which circle did you assign Trudeau? Do not tell Cerberus.
CBC said it first: Mistah Trudeau - he dead*.
Maggie and Deborah Coyne mourn.
The struggle has passed to the CBC.
The Mission of the CBC: The Hagiography of Trudeau; The Resurrection of Trudeau.
CBC News - 'He won't be coming back anymore, it's up to us'
Margaret Trudeau and her two sons, Justin and Sacha, walked behind the casket. Following them were Deborah Coyne and her daughter with Trudeau, ...-
*H/T: Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness.
Notice how Canada Press, as well as our other media systems, are misinforming the public. The CBC comment, from CP, says:
"Apps said he recently ran into Justin Trudeau and spent 15 to 20 minutes discussing his views on recognizing Quebec as a nation within Canada"
But that's not the motion before the House. There's no recognition of Quebec as a nation within Canada. It's recognition of the Quebecois as a nation within a united Canada.
Quebecois does not equal Quebec!! How many times does it have to be said?? Quebecois refers only to the people who live within a collective sociocultural realm. Period. That can include francophones, allophones and anglophones.
There is nothing about the governance of this realm, only a sociocultural set of beliefs and behaviour. Period.
One feels like beating the various reporters over the head until unconsciousness sets in, except for the fact that they are already in that vacuous state.
Yes, it does mean that any collective sociocultural people can be defined as a 'nation'. It's not a new definition; it's old, old - 19th c and older. It has nothing to do with the governing infrastructure but with the cultural superstructure.
Actually, I think Sacha Trudeau might be right; his father, the esteemed Pierre, who set up the current mess in which we wallow, would probably have been against sociocultural nationalism - which acknowledges the different experienced history of different regions. Pierre's ideology was Supra-State Social Engineering, an enforced homogeneity, where everyone would be bilingual, and everyone would be anglo-franco or franco-anglo and everyone would be just fine and dandy. And Just. As in Justin.
The problem is, it never occurred to this same Pierre, living in his utopian Platonic Land up in the Wealthy Clouds, rather than in hard reality - it never occurred to him that his dream of enforced homogeneity would never work. It hasn't. It's one full generation after - and we aren't bilingual. That's because you can't make a people be what they are not. No matter how super duper it would be..
The result has been a massive de-democratization of Canada, with the majority of the population barred from all relevant and basic roles in our own government - from the military to the economic to the judicial to the political. Wow. That's quite the result, Pierre.
But, Harper is clever; he was forced into this tactic by Ignatieff and Duceppe; he had to do it to reclaim the right to define Canada, including its provinces, to Canada. But, this will enable him to advance decentralization, an important and necessary advancement in Canadian governance.
I'm no fan of the late Pierre but crass comments about his deceased son are uncalled for. I would hope that I would not be judged or ridiculed because of my father nor my children because of me.
Maybe someone peed in Kate's corn flakes this morning.
If Trudeau's spawn decides to run for leader next time out and so does Belinda, the LPC could have a formal on the Saturday night and call it.....a Dilettante Ball.
CBC’s attempt to continue the Trudeapian dynasty is certainly irritating.
But take some consolation knowing that PET is now sitting at the Mahjong table, drinking endless cups of green tea, with those he most admired most, for ever and a day. You know how quickly he became bored.
Despite the vitriol concerning any of the Trudeaus on this blog, whichever one Paul Demarais eventually decides to use, will play quite nicely with the Toronto/ Montreal "axis of social utopianism".
If Demerais is astute, he will follow Gunney 99's advice, and put "Whichever" Trudeau in the CAF right now, for a stint as a media relations officer.
A nice, safe trip to Af'stan and Darfur later, and he's the home grown hero, son of the late greatest, etc.
The kid'll win in a landslide.
PET=NDE
Like the other Greatest Canadian Kate wrote of... NOT DEAD ENOUGH
Given our country's aversion to constitutional reform, it would be far simpler to replace Elizabeth II with Justin Trudeau as our sovereign, than to abolish the Canadian monarchy outright.
You don't think the idea hasn't been tossed around certain quarters?
In response to the prissy post:
"I would hope that I would not be judged or ridiculed because of my father nor my children because of me."
It cuts both way, dude. If Liberals are going deem someone "royalty" solely on the basis of who their father was, then they opened that door. Opened it very wide by the sounds of things, "someday may be prime minister"... jeezus murphy...
I dislike the Trudeaus as much as anyone here, but making fun of the dead son is unworthy of you Kate. You are the best blogger in Canada; keep to the high road....
[deleted - it's one thing to be insufficiently sympathetic towards the death of a quasi-celebrity, and quite another to wish a living person ill. - Ed]
That is bit harsh Kate. Young Michael Trudeaus death was a very sad event. He was a bright young man (and he looked like a young Elvis too). The chalet his family created (with grants and donations and tax money, IIRC) is quite the palace for the back country crowd. But it is a welcome addition to the provincial park where Michael died and was very much needed. The original Slocan Chief cabin where he spent his last night was in pretty bad shape.
Having said that the personality cult surrounding the other two brothers is very much like the Kennedys. No doubt Canadians will be paying their government salaries and pensions soon as the Liberals continue their increasingly desparate onslaught to regain power.....sigh.
I do not know much about them yet but from what little I have seen Sasha especially seems to have inherited his fathers preference for foreign dictators and totaltarians over any of our Democratic allies. While Justin strikes me as more of a one world government type where the UN rules and environment trumps sovereignty.
And I like what little I have seen of Ben Mulroney. But he seems uninterested in politics at this point. The young Trudeaus it seems are not. Which is unfortunate for us conservatives that is for sure. I doubt they will match their fathers achievements but Canada is likely to be stuck with their influence at the CBC and with the Liberals for the rest of our natural lives. Oh joy./s
I'd take Ben Mulroney and his plastic, unmoveable hair any day over the smug Justin Trudeau and his over-inflated ego. His head is likely to explode soon with all of this adulation. Ben Mulroney is charming in a self-deprecating sort of way, and seems much more likeable to me, anyway.
I can see a Paul Martin effect happening all over again in a few years. The promised savior, Justin Trudeau, will descend upon the Canadian Throne and lo and behold, make a fool out of himself. He can never live up to the hype.
When he has actually done something then he might be worth paying attention to. Right now he is the Paris Hilton of Candian politics....famous for being famous.
But, warning to all, Paris is millionaire in her own right. Based on her building on being famous for being famous. We will see a Trudeau on a federal ballot again within the decade.
I am stupified and horrified by the media in Canada. (well who isn't who thinks?) How it is fawning over the Christ Child Trudeau. They WANT him to be leader. It would be just like the old days, with anti-Vietnam war rallies and ganja now supplied by the state.
I really am nausiated and frightened by this establishment desire to crown SON OF TRUDEAU (It even sounds like a B-Horror move ).
On record, the boyo is a witless, vacuous, pompous pratt.
again with a turdeau in the military....cuban army maybe....canadian army, killing taliban...NEVER....the shit apple does not fall far from the shit tree.....GO ARMY(except turdeau)
btw...if it did ever happen...i would give up my pension to be the drill sergeant for 1 week.....reality check, over
If we are lucky this generation will be the genetic deadend of the Trudeau's and CBCpravda's hope for some sort of dynasty.
It was almost poetic that one of his ended up in an abyss like his father left this country.
one less of the swarmy spawn to be foist upon this country with the help of the Liberals and their CBC craven lackeys. CBC reported Just in's eulogy like it was a political entry speech.
We've had enough "Trudeaupia" or is that "True-Dope-eyah"?
Why all the MSM fawning when the son:
1. Hasn't announced he is running for anything.
2. Hasn't got any policy pronouncement.
3. Royalty is belonging to the Crown's bloodline, which Trudeau clearly isn't.
4. "reverence offered to Trudeau."?
I thought reverence was something one has for God or perhaps when contemplating God.
So the liberals are now idolators in waiting, when Justin gets over the fact that he is merely 'his father's son'.
MSM fluff and fodder for adoring twits, who are enamored of genetic lineage.
I thought democracies were supposed to do away with this concept; but the LIEberals obviously would like to resurrect this concept.
Speaking about PET, the resurrection as I understand it, hasn't yet occurred.
The LIEBerals are guilty of hasty conclusion.
On the other hand there would be some voters who would like to see the Last Judgement rendered.
Anon! A little shake of your small head would be appropriate now. I was referring to Pierre's third son who has been deceased for quite some time now. Hellooooooo
a different Bob.
I think Anon realized that "nummer three son" of chairman T. is bottom feeder food.
Nummer one son is CBCpravda media darling.
Nummer two son is CBCpravda direct link to Castro.
Nummer three son is CBCpravda full into recycling selflessly to the environment.
Chairman T.would be well pleased.
and I debated calling it :
number 1 ,correctly spelled.
nummer 1 aka Charlie Chan
or
"numbber" as in being numb aka the Canadian public to the MSM message.
cal2, have some class, like 99.9% of other sda. This is not a tabloid.
"De mortiis aut bene aut nihil."
Oops, that's "mortis".
"a turdeau in uniform....please, stop, i am gagging...the only uniform u will ever see on any of those commie sob's will have a red star on it.....i wore a uniform during the turdeau years, and i can tell u it was no picnic...i can guarantee not one of those cowards would ever join their country's armed forces.....GO ARMY"
Sorry to break this to you:
I believe you'll find Alexandre Trudeau completed armoured phase training in Gagetown as a reserve officer in the Royal Canadian Hussars.
i stand corrected
"in the presence of royalty"
that´s a good one...
thank you for "your morning smile". uff.
You may not like Trudeau. That's fine. I didn't. But your crack about Michel was uncalled for. Worse, it was needlessly cruel. I wonder how you would feel if some who took a dislike to you decided to take it out on your family or make light of personal tragedy.
His father isn't around, but Michel's brothers and mother are, and I suspect, miss him every day. The decent thing would be if you apologized.
If the Trudolts can't take the heat, they should get out of the media glare. But look at the weasels, they bask in it. Therefore every comment is fairplay. As far as comparisons, they should be thankful they haven't ended up more like the Kennedy's.
It's "needlessly cruel" that Canadians have to be reminded of Trudeau. As far as the spector of this one or any other being a future prime minister - George Bush would have a better chance.
No apologies.
CBCpravda "All Liberal all the Time"
guess who they are comparing him to.
CBCpravda headline this morning.
The high-wire candidacy of Michael Ignatieff
Irwin,
There's no need to speculate on George Bush's chances at becoming a Canadian PM.
W, after thoroughly screwing up everything he has touched and locking up $millions for himself and his buddies will hit the speech circuit for $250K a night.
Don't call Justin our Paris Hilton: that role has already been assumed by Belinda Stronach. A more apt comparison would be John Kennedy Jr., who was idolized by the media for his (inherited) fame, good looks and charm but whose actual accomplishments ranged the gamut from trivial to insignificant to non-existent. At least John Jr. had the grace to appear embarrassed by all the attention, unlike Justin (and Sacha and their mother) who actually seem to believe this Canadian-Royalty crap and never miss an opportunity to share their opinions with the rest of us plebes.
I can never miss an opportunity to remember the old days when the Trudeaus were putting in a pool and patio on Sussex drive . Pierre did the brickwork while Margaret layed the stones.
