Maybe a bit OT here, but having just watched the Q&A with PMSH following his big announcement,re cancer funding...all I can say is wow,and WOW!Predictably, the media basically ignored the announcement, and majority of Q.related to the Que.thingy.PMSH very clearly, and passionately reiterated his stance..to APPLAUSE from media!!! Unreal! and I was moved, and proud,of his clarity.I was pleased, and somewhat surprised, that cbc covered entire press conference..especially when it went so well, ctv,on other hand cut away just into the real "meat" of it all.
Prior to conf, the wingnuts were out,the anti-war protestors chose a cancer-funding speech to show up,and were quickly dragged off.I guess they aren't getting enough attention lately.
Anyone that has any doubt about our PM's stand on the Bloc's motion, would benefit from watching todays response to media questions. What a LEADER!

Carbon trading is the biggest sham to come since... well never. farmers can trade carbon credits right now for $2.00/tonne, correct me if I'm wrong. who is making up the $18 differnce? and please tell me how this will reduce the effects of climate change? omg ppl are so stupid, if the msm would report every death caused by either slipping in a tub or shower or drowning while bathing i bet that soon nobody would ever wash again

UN Human Rights Commissioner: Israel Worse Than Hizballah

French Canadian Louise Arbour, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, says that even though Hizballah and Hamas deliberately target civilians with indiscriminate terror attacks, Israel is much worse.

Israel could be considered deserving of more blame for its actions in the Lebanon war than Hizbullah, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour said in an interview with The Jerusalem Post Thursday.

Asked by the Post if there was a distinction under human rights law between missile attacks aimed at killing civilians and military strikes in which civilians are unintentionally killed, Arbour said the two could not be equated.

“In one case you could have, for instance, a very objectionable intent - the intent to harm civilians, which is very bad - but effectively not a lot of harm is actually achieved,” she said. “But how can you compare that with a case where you may not have an intent but you have recklessness [in which] civilian casualties are foreseeable? The culpability or the intent may not sound as severe, but the actual harm is catastrophic.” ...

I too was amazed at Jason Myers numbers and how devastating they would be for our economy. The following was posted before but without the answers. One of Canada's leading organizations behind the Kyoto campaign was asked these questions, they provided no answers, they avoided them by referring me to some other enviro website

Questions that the Proponents of the Kyoto Accord do not like to answer, or cannot give rational answers to..(with my version of the 'correct answers').

Is the world’s climate continually evolving? Answer- YES

What brought about the end of every ice age to date? Answer- Global warming within the region of the planet where the ice existed.

Is it true that if global warming had not occurred in the past, that our lands would be covered with a thousand feet of ice? A- Yes, absolutely.

Did humans cause the global warming that brought about the end of the previous ice ages? A- NO, as for the most part there were no humans inhabiting the planet at the time.

To what extent are we able to effect the world’s climate? A- we do not know with any degree of certainty, some pretend they do know.

Would compliance by all of the signature countries to the Kyoto Agreement reduce global warming? A- YES it would, however it is most doubtful that it could reverse global warming, only slow down the rate of increase to some small and unknown amount. In any case to stop global warming would most likely be to advance the start of the next ice age.

Is it true that recent discoveries by some British scientific researchers regarding the changes which may be occurring in the ocean currents, in the Atlantic Ocean in particular, are caused by water temperature changes occurring? A-Yes it is true. These scientific researchers installed temperature and ocean current measurement devices across the Atlantic, from early data, they believe that it may be, that such ocean current changes, EG ‘the Gulf Stream’, may in time cause and may have in past history, been the cause of Europe’s ice ages. This suggests that it may just be too early for the world to be jumping on the Kyoto band wagon and that we as a world society should do more due-diligence (scientific study) before renegotiating then implementing this extremely out of balanced agreement on world action against climate change (in particular Canada's targets).

Is it true that the Liberals plan for Canada to comply with the Kyoto targets involved the purchase of perhaps several billion dollars worth of “carbon credits” from some under developed Asian and European countries?- Yes it is true, EG Russia. Mr. Myers confirmed the extreme damage that this would do to our economy.

If Canada were to purchase “carbon credits”, would it result in lower emissions of green house gases or pollutants in Canada? Absolutely NOT.

Would it result in a reduction of global green house gas or pollution? Absolutely NOT

Would the purchase of “carbon credits” have an impact on Canada’s economy? YES, the effects would be very negative.

Is it true that many third world countries will profit financially from the Kyoto agreement whether or not there are any positive effects on climate change? A- YES it is true. Certainly we should help the impoverished countries of the world through foreign aid, but the Kyoto accord is not the vehicle in which to do so, not was that it's supposed purpose.

Has the IGCC panel considered the suggestion (hypothesis) that an accelerated melting of the Greenland ice cap could put a cover of fresh low density water over the adjacent northern ocean thereby shutting down the gulf stream? The present salty, dense cold water, would not be able to drop down to the bottom of the ocean, which presently allows the warm gulf to extend to the north? A- it appears not as if it is true, then global warming could shut down the N. Atlantic circulation and precipitate the next ice age. Of course then Europe might just be wanting global warming. But this is only one of many hypotheses out there.

Has the IGCC panel considered the evidence that there is some correlation of global temperatures to sun spot activity? No they have not, in fact they, including the likes of CBC’s Fifth Estate and Dr. Andrew Weaver from U Vic, have gone out of their way in attempting to discredit those who have studied the sun spots or every other possible rational for climate change. ”If the “science is sound” as they attempt to claim, then they should be happy to put it up to all scrutiny.
As an example some of them charged that Dr. Ball and others from the “Friends of Science,” have been funded by oil companies. Dr. Ball categorically refutes this charge as being a blatant lie.

Is it true that the only scientific group to study and track climate change for more than recent history is the geological community? A-YES

Do geologists agree with the Kyoto protocol? A-NO, most say that it is premature to take such action when the start of another ice age may be just around the corner

The vast majority of so called “climatologists’ do not have a BSc in “climatology”, they are a mish-mash of mostly well meaning engineers, mathematicians, geneticists (like D. Suzuki), horticulturists, biologists, environmentalists, meteorologists and countless other ‘ists’. Very few are truly qualified to the extent that they should be considered experts on climate change, including David Suzuki, Al Gore, Arnold Shwartzeneger, David Anderson, Jean Cretien, Paul Martin, Jack Layton (all NDP ers), Stephan Dion, Garth Turner and many others who talk a lot about it but have little or no technical knowledge of the subject.

Is there a university in the world that has a degree program in climatology, and if so where? The first, and I believe the only university in the world to offer a BSc degree in climatology, is the University of South Queensland in Australia.

Is Australia a member of the Kyoto Agreement? A- NO

How many Kyoto advocates can truly answer these questions, and how many can refute them with plausible , rational answers? None have thus far.

Lewis

Let us not forget that this is an El Niño period. We will have wild variations in the normal weather patterns. This is cyclical and has been know for centuries.

Climatologists agree that the most significant GHG is water vapour (clouds) and that accounts for at leat 95% of these gases. The SUN causes water to evaporate and form clouds.

Seems that the dippers forget that CO2 is what plants need to live on. With more vegetaion in the world today than 40 years ago any surprise that nature is producing more CO2 to keep things in balance.

Note what Duceppe said in the House:

"Mr. Speaker, there will be many other countries that will recognize the nation of Quebec and the country of Quebec," Duceppe said.

But Canada didn't recognize the nation or the country of Quebec. It recognized that the Quebecois are a nation; that means the people, not the land. Not the country. Just the people.
That's a 19thc. fichte-Herder definition of 'nation' which defines 'nation' as a population of common culture and/or language. Period.

"France had sat silent."

Stephane Dion is silent in regard to the genocide

committed by his country: France.

Why is Dion silent?

France is his country;

he is a dual citizen of France and Canada.

Dion hopes to be the leader of Canada's Liberal Party. If Dion is chosen as the leader, he may be the Prime Minister of Canada.

Dion must speak on this issue. Where do you stand on this genocide, Dion?

Does your silence mean that you are not aware of the French genocide in Rwanda? Does your silence mean consent; that you condone genocide? Surely not.

French Accused of Complicity in Genocide

The New Times (Kigali)
By Linda Melvem
Kigali

An unprecedented public inquiry into France's role in the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda held hearings in Kigali last week, where the French army was accused of complicity in the massacre of Tutsi and moderate Hutu.

The seven-person examining commission is hearing testimonies from 20 survivors, some claiming serious human rights abuses, including rape and murder, by the French military. The commission is also examining Operation Tur-quoise; the 1994 French military intervention that was ostensibly aimed at saving Rwandan lives.

Human rights groups in France claim French soldiers tricked thousands of Tutsi survivors out of hiding and abandoned them to the Interahamwe militia.

The three-month genocide claimed up to one

million Tutsis and moderate Hutus.

Close links existed between France and Rwanda, the tiny African country ruled by a Hutu dictatorship for 20 years. France was its biggest supplier of heavy military equipment and sent troops in 1990 to help repel a military offensive from Uganda by the largely Rwandan Patriotic Front, (RPF), against the corrupt president, Juvenal Habyarimana.

During nearly three years of civil war, in some instances senior French officers took operational battlefield control. In 1993, an international peace agreement replaced the French with UN peacekeepers, to monitor creation of a power-sharing democracy.

For years, the French government denied any part

in the Genocide.

Its own parliamentary enquiry in 1997 called the Genocide one of the greatest tragedies of the century admitted only that France had underestimated the threat. But the enquiry did reveal that the former French president, François Mitterrand, had largely been responsible for French policy in Rwanda.

By 1994, the Rwandan army had become a "military protégé" of France. Before the genocide, 47 high-ranking French army and gendarmerie officers were with the Rwanda military. French officers were attached to the elite battalions, the Presidential Reconnaissance Battalion.

In April, 1994, French-trained officers from the Presidential Guard eliminated the pro-democracy and political opposition and French-trained soldiers from the para-commando and the reconnaissance battalion began killing anyone with a Tutsi identity card.

The Rwanda Commission has evidence that the French trained the Interahamwe and French officers were in commando training centres, where torture was perpetrated and where political opponents disappeared. Yet in meetings of the Security Council to decide UN policy on Rwanda;

France had sat silent. ...-

...well I won't complain as loud now about AdScam when Englands Health-Care system wanted to go IT, original cost was $12 Billion US, has now reached $24 Billion and the project is "sleepwalking toward disaster"...

http://www.cioinsight.com/article2/0,1540,2058954,00.asp

The English government budgeted close to $12 billion to transform its health-care system with information technology. The result: possibly the biggest and most complex technology project in the world and one that critics, including two Members of Parliament, worry is headed toward disaster.

In late September, Accenture, the global management and technology consultancy, announced it was walking away from a $3.73 billion contract as an information-technology services provider on the world's biggest non-military I.T. project, a hugely ambitious and complex attempt to transform England's entire National Health Service through technology. Accenture, which failed to respond to numerous requests for interviews, did not say why it was exiting the National Health Service (NHS) project, but earlier this year it had set aside $450 million to cover potential losses from its work in England.

Its exodus represents the latest in a series of setbacks and missteps that have plagued the highly controversial program since its inception.

FRANCE VS. RWANDA: Envoy expelled as judge rules President was behind killing
The Times ^ | November 25, 2006 | Jonathan Clayton

Decades of hostility between France and Rwanda burst into the open yesterday when the tiny Central African state recalled its ambassador and broke off diplomatic relations with Paris.

Charles Murigande, the Rwandan Foreign Affairs Minister, said: “We have ordered the French Ambassador to leave our country within 24 hours and given other French diplomats 72 hours to leave the country,” he said. Rwanda made its move after a French anti-terrorist judge issued arrest warrants against nine leading Rwandans for killing a former President, the event that sparked the 1994 genocide.

Judge Jean-Louis Bruguière, who brought the terrorist Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, Carlos the Jackal, to justice, also said that President Kagame should face trial for the shooting-down on April 6, 1994, of a French plane carrying Juvénal Habyarimana, the former President, and a crew of seven French nationals.

Rwanda, which maintains that France was complicit in the massacre of some 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus through its support of Habyarimana’s hardline Hutu Government, reacted with fury to the allegations. More than 25,000 people attended demonstrations in the capital, Kigali, yesterday. Many carried placards reading: “The hell with French imperialism” and “They killed our people”.

President Kagame dismissed the judge’s call as “rubbish” and said that the trial should be directed at France, which he accuses of never having come clean about its role in history’s fastest mass slaughter.

“That some judge in France whose name I cannot even pronounce has something to say about Rwanda — trying a president and some government officials — that’s rubbish,” he told diplomats. “That is justice of bullies, arrogance . . . France cannot try anyone. Try who? Over what? They should first try themselves because they killed our people.” ...-

Received this the other day, what the hell is going on?

I was just talking to my daughter who is a student at E.C. Drury High School. She told me that the school has set up a Muslim Prayer Room on Fridays so the kids can pray. Makes me think back when they took the lords prayer out of the schools because school is no place for religion. (You know, I am sooooo mad).

Also, the school was doing some Charity work (Operation Christmas Child). The Halton School Board has put a hold on it because it is promoting Christian propaganda.

Hamas Cameraman Killed in Gaza

Here’s an interesting report from Gaza: Hamas cameraman killed by Israeli troops. (Hat tip: Killgore Trout.)

Israeli troops killed a Hamas militant Friday who was filming the group’s operations in Gaza, Palestinian medical officials said.

The governing Hamas movement often films its battles and operations against the Israeli Army, later broadcasting the footage on its television station and releasing it to other media outlets.

Notice how the Associated Press doesn’t name the cameraman, or any of those “other media outlets” that use Hamas footage.

I don’t recall ever seeing any video or photos from Gaza identified as being from Hamas. ...-

'Merry Christmas' theme returns to stores

UPI ^ | 11/24/06
Bowing to pressure from conservative Christian groups, several U.S. retail stores are reverting to the "Merry Christmas" theme this holiday season. Leading the way is Wal-Mart, which is moving away from last year's generic "Happy Holidays" to return to Christmas this month in all its seasonal marketing in the Untied States, the Baltimore Sun reports. "We've learned our lesson," Wal-Mart spokeswoman Marisa Bluestone told the newspaper. "This year, we're not afraid to say, 'Merry Christmas.'" The same goes for Walgreens, Target, Macy's, Kmart and Kohl's. The report said conservative Christian groups, which normally frown on the commercialization of Christmas, were...-

“Walking Tall!” | November 24th, 2006

It seems to me like a century ago I read an article by Stephen Harper at the National Citizens Coalition website and reacted (Stephen was the head of the organization at the time). I can’t find the article right now — it appears to be no longer available — but it impressed me so much I wrote to them and asked why they didn’t become a political party in their own right because I saw Harper as a real leader with many good ideas. I received no reply.

“Little did I know” as Stockwell Day went on to defeat Preston Manning for the leadership of the Reform Party and in his turn was “beaten to death” because he was a staunch Evangelical Christian by the “natural governing party” in the following election. It was low, it was very dirty and it exposed Liberals for what they really are.

I warned my local riding that it would happen and nobody believed me.
.......

THE WORKING CLASS!

It was a winning ticket as they continued to play one against another and that continued until a man with a big stick entered the arena.

All of a sudden it’s “going to hell” as they watch him beat the Bloc and many others – the socialist ”reason d’etre”, their “reason for being” – right into the ground.

The Bloc is one tiny problem in a huge mess but it’s a great start in regards to the issue of separation and we need a lot more of it as this man drags Canada, “kicking and screaming”, back to the rightful place our ancestors earned at Vimy Ridge and all the other places we have fought for because of our beliefs.

It is to “Thank God” that Canada has produced such a son and today I publically acknowledge this fact and my only regret is that Canada will not likely see his like again in my lifetime.

We should take advantage of the opportunity he represents while we can.

Update: I’m going to leave this entry at the top of the heap. It appears to be important judging from the comments. I’ll be back in the AM.

Goodnight. ...-

The return of SMERSH*

One of the most fascinating scenes in Ian Fleming's original Casino Royale comes when the executioner from SMERSH arrives at the juncture when French Communist trade union boss Le Chiffre is torturing James Bond. Le Chiffre is engaged in the sadistic act of repeatedly smashing Bond's testicles with a carpet cleaner as revenge for 007 thwarting him at cards, where he hoped to win enough money to cover his embezzlement of Soviet funds which he used to buy a string of brothels -- in part for his personal use. When the man from SMERSH makes his appearance and announces, in a hollow voice offstage as it were, Le Chiffre's death sentence, the Communist villain is paralyzed with fear. His mouth works soundlessly, beads of sweat break out on his face, his hands drop nervelessly to his side. A momentary impulse to plead for mercy crosses Le Chiffre's Communist mind, but it falls back in despair. SMERSH is pitiless and relentless. A muffled "phut" is heard and then Le Chiffre, his face decorated with a grotesque third eye, dies in disconnected stages before the terrified 007. No escape from SMERSH -- or something like it -- even in London. Ask Alexander Litvinenko. ...-

Canada's progressive Muslims wonder why left would embrace theocrats.
By Terry Glavin

This is what it's come to: a disgraced, dictator-praising British MP who dances around in red tights on reality-television shows is visiting Canada to commemorate the founding of a fascist movement known for its own distinctive swastika and Nazi-style uniforms and an anthem that's sung to the tune of Deutschland, Deutschland, Uber Alles.

And it's just another otherwise unremarkable day in the life of Canada's "anti-war" movement.

Just how things degenerated so badly, and so fast, is a long and sad story.

The upshot is that Canada's anti-war movement has become not only the primary vehicle for an obscure, formerly left-wing group that attacks anyone who opposes Shariah courts in Canada, it's also now the main source of public respectability for a Toronto think-tank that advocates for the establishment of theocracies that hang gay people.

It's also a story that has left Canada's progressive Muslims in despair, in disarray, and sometimes in fear for their lives. ...-

Town that breeds suicide bombers
The Daily Telegraph ^ | November 25, 2006 | Fiona Govan

Their destination may be almost 3,000 miles away, but the draw of martyrdom in Iraq is proving irresistable for the young men of Tetouan.

American intelligence officials believe that the Moroccan town, less than 30 miles from the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, has become one of the world's most fertile recruiting ground for jihadists.

In the last eight months a group of young men, all worshippers at the same mosque, have left their homes to become suicide bombers in Iraq.

After DNA tests on their bodies, and Moroccan authorities asking families to provide samples, US intelligence traced at least nine of those responsible for recent suicide missions in and around Baghdad to Tetouan and its surrounding area in the foothills of the Rif Mountains.

Local reports suggest that another 21 individuals have left the area to seek martyrdom, following in the footsteps of five other Tetouanis who blew themselves up in a Madrid suburb when cornered by police, who believed they played a part in the train bombings in the Spanish capital in March 2004.

The families of the young men, all in their twenties, tell the same stories – of sons, brothers, husbands who became disillusioned with the daily struggle to earn.

Early each morning Abdelmonem Amakchar El Amrani, 21, would leave the home that he shared with his wife and infant daughter to travel 30 miles to work as a porter hauling merchandise across the border between Morocco and Ceuta. On a good day he could make four or five trips, earning around £3 a time.

When he arrived home exhausted each evening he would talk of his dream of making the short journey across the Mediterranean to Spain, where he would build a life for himself before sending for his family.

Earlier this year he began spending more time at the mosque, grew a beard and one day disappeared.

The first the family learnt of his fate was when police informed them that on March 6 he had driven a car bomb into a funeral procession, killing six and wounding 27 in the Iraqi city of Bakuba, 35 miles northwest of Baghdad.

Like many of the other men, he lived in Jamaa Mezuak, one of the poorest districts of Tetouan, where unemployment and illiteracy are high, and many houses in the labyrinthine streets have no running water. Young men loiter on street corners in groups of four and five, selling contraband cigarettes and hashish from the nearby mountains.

"This part of Morocco is a place of misery, of poverty, unemployment and a place devoid of hope," said Aissa Acharki, a prominent member of Justice and Spirituality, a controversial Islamic political party which promotes non-violence and understanding between different religions.

"That so many of these men are choosing to become martyrs in Iraq is shocking but we should not be surprised that they are making this choice."

He believed that the region's proximity to Europe creates a state of mental torture in the young. "They watch western television, they follow the Spanish football league, they look at the style of life that people have over there and they become frustrated.

"The idea of reaching paradise through martyrdom is becoming increasingly attractive. This is promoted by imams in some of the mosques and prepares them for the call to jihad." ...-

Liberalism's 'dirty secret' - It doesn't always work
National Post ^ | 2006-11-25 | John Ivison,

OTTAWA - On the eve of the Liberal leadership convention, the man charged with leading the party's renewal process has dropped a bombshell by questioning one of liberalism's key convictions -- that government actually works.

In a hard-hitting policy paper obtained by the National Post, Tom Axworthy, a former top advisor to Pierre Trudeau, says there is an "implementation gap" between what Liberal governments promise and what they deliver.

"Liberalism's dirty secret [and it is not so secret these days] is that government doesn't seem to work well much of the time," he says, citing such examples as the 800,000 potential immigrants waiting for their applications to be processed; massive cost overruns at the gun registry; lengthy procurement delays for military equipment; poor water quality on aboriginal reserves; and the Jean Chretien Pledge to Africa Act, which promised to produce generic drugs to help fight AIDS but has yet to export a single pill.

Mr. Axworthy's paper also urges the Liberal party to:

- reject the Conservative motion on the nationhood of the Quebecois because it has "no basis in logic."

- introduce security considerations to Investment Canada criteria to ensure Canadian assets are not sold to state-owned Chinese companies.

- ensure human rights are raised with the Chinese Communist leadership so they know such values are central to a relationship with Canada.

- Reverse the Conservative decision on income trusts, grandfather existing trusts and put a size cap on trusts with tax-exempt status;

- Channel higher-education funding directly to students, in the form of grants, rather than to provinces;

- Offer a Resources Security Pact with the United States, which exchanges a guaranteed supply of Canadian oil for trade concessions; and

- Reform the party's internal structure by allowing local members to decide how much funding is retained in the ridings and how much goes to the central organization.

In the paper, Mr. Axworthy notes that without renewal, institutions atrophy. "This is what has happened to the Liberal Party of Canada."

He says the party has lost sight of the core mission of philosophical liberalism -- "to expand the life choices and life chances of every individual."

The party's chosen instrument -- effective, responsive government -- no longer works much of the time. Meanwhile, the voluntary organization of the party "is losing credibility and seethes with discontent." ...-

Hamas Threatens Violence Unless They Get a State

Hamas says that unless they get their own state soon, they’re going to have to kill people: Hamas predicts new uprising if no peace progress.

CAIRO/GAZA (Reuters) - The militant Islamist group Hamas warned Israel on Saturday of a third uprising if it failed with the United States and Europe to make progress toward a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders.

The fabulously standoffish and occasionally antagonistic Prime Minister’s Office press shop was kind enough to pro-actively offer this transcript of the big guy’s Montreal scrum today. We didn’t even have to ask. Apparently it went well.I was busy selling my book — 10 interviews in 10 hours; my Montreal publicist does not mess around — so I can’t vouch for the completeness or accuracy of this transcript, but surely it’s pretty close. Harper makes a few points that will help flesh out our understanding of whatever it is that just happened. Enjoy…(APPLAUSE)

JOURNALIST: Mr. Harper, on the question of recognition of the Quebec nation, we learned this morning that the Bloc québécois is going to support your motion. I’d like to know how you feel and how comfortable you are knowing that you’ll be entering the House with the support of the Bloc but that in several other parts of Canada, people are displeased with your motion.

RT. HON. STEPHEN HARPER: Well, it’s interesting. This is the third position by the Bloc in three days. (LAUGHTER) They proposed a motion. They made an amendment to their motion, and now they’re supporting our motion, but I must tell you that the responsibility of the Prime Minister of Canada, the primary responsibility is Canadian unity. If I can have the support of even the Bloc when it comes to Canada’s unity, I’m pleased. (LAUGHTER, APPLAUSE) But I have…I have to say that this motion, this motion is important. It talks not only about the Quebec nation but about the entire reality of this Quebec nation, as I said when I addressed the House of Commons. That includes the Canadian identity. For over 40 years, two referenda, the Bloc and their Parti québécois allies have been trying to convince les Québécois to be a nation outside Canada, and les Québécois have rejected this because they are proud of their language, of their culture, of the nation, but they are also proud of their historic, current and future role in the development of this country, Canada. And I think that this motion reflects both these realities, and it’s now up to the Bloc to explain their position and their reason for being in Ottawa. (APPLAUSE) (jack's newswatch)

The 751 No-Go Zones of France
Jihadwatch.org ^ | 11/24/06 | Robert Spencer

They go by the euphemistic term Zones Urbaines Sensibles, or Sensitive Urban Zones, with the even more antiseptic acronym ZUS, and there are 751 of them as of last count. They are conveniently listed on one long webpage, complete with street demarcations and map delineations.

What are they? Those places in France that the French state does not control. They range from two zones in the medieval town of Carcassone to twelve in the heavily Muslim town of Marseilles, with hardly a town in France lacking in its ZUS. The ZUS came into existence in late 1996 and according to a 2004 estimate, nearly 5 million people live in them.

Farm Raid.

OLA Press release

In an ironic turn of events, the OLA has learned that the Honourable Minster of Finance Greg Sorbara and his family drink raw milk and consume unpasturised cheese and butter from Michael Schmidt's farm. Minster Sorbaras family are, and have been shareholders in this cooperative venture since 1992.

The question needs to be asked at the cabinet table will the honourable Leona Dumbrowsky (Minster of Agriculture) request the Honourable David Ramses (Minster of Natural Resources) to send armed officers to investigate Mr Sorbaras' activities: and is Greg Sorbara aiding and abetting an unlawful activity? Or will they throw a protective shield of darkness and secrecy over the cabinet table, in their efforts to create their Liberal homogenised society..

The following statement by Michael Schmidt provides greater details and was read at his press conference attended by hundreds of supporters.
November 23, 2006
Statement in Response to November 21, 2006 Farm Raid

Thank you all for coming to save one farm at a time . . . to save one farmer at a time and to save the dignity of us farmers. On November 21, Glencolton Farms was raided as part of an 18-month investigation triggered by an incident NOT connected to this farm and NOT connected to farm fresh milk, the details of which were suspected but never proven. The Government and bureaucrats are now fabricating stories in order to justify their actions against free and sovereign individuals.

In 1994, I was charged and found guilty for exactly the same offences, that is, providing a service to our customers with products that they wanted. I was placed under probation for two years, meaning that I was not to produce and process any milk. During that time, I offered the Government this farm as a research facility for the production of farm fresh milk.

In 1995, I wrote letters to the Minister of Agriculture and Food, Elmer Buchanan, to the Minister of Health, Ruth Grier, and to the Ontario Milk Marketing Board. I notified all of them of my intention to continue the service of providing people with farm fresh milk from their own cows.

On March 16. 1995, the Toronto Star, Kitchener Waterloo Record and the Owen Sound Sun Times, along with many Farm papers, all carried the story of my attempt to work together with the Government. When there was no response, I announced that I would conduct my research independently and made it clear at that time that, if the farm were subjected to any more raids and interference, I would go on a hunger strike.

Yesterday’s event means that I must act on what I said more than 11 years ago. As of now, I will begin the hunger strike until all of the equipment, documents and other items removed from this farm have been returned. The Government has to agree to be financial liable for the personal property of cow shareowners. As well, they need to agree in writing that the farm is to be left alone, so that it can carry on its service to the 150 families, until and unless all of the issues have been dealt with in court or in the Legislative Assembly or House of Parliament.

This farm has been able to function for over 11 years with the full knowledge of every level of government. That it has been doing so has been public knowledge for over 11 years. The Government of Ontario and the Bruce Grey Owen Sound Health Unit, including Dr Murray McQuigge, at that time chief medical officer of health, had all the information at hand. They all decided to leave me alone. They had two choices at that time: to arrest me because I broke the probation or to leave me alone and let me continue. The fact that they left me alone, in my opinion, legalized this farm’s activities, and made the Government liable for their actions. A lawsuit from our side will follow, if necessary.

The cow share programme on this farm enables families to obtain their own milk. I am providing shelter, feed and care for their animals. I’m not arguing the fact that raw milk is better; I know it is better; it is the cow owners’ choice to drink their milk. This fight is not about me; it’s not about the farm; it’s about the freedom of informed choice for every individual in Ontario.

We are farmers who care with our heart for the land and the people. Government is regulating and controlling the farmers and consumers with bureaucrats and raw power. Everyone should have the right to own a cow and drink the milk that nourished our parents, our grandparents, our great grandparents, and us. Milk is nature’s perfect food. Let’s restore our respect for the land, our respect for the farmer who cares for the land, our respect for all human beings who are quite capable of making their own decisions.

The Queen of England has just turned down a submission to ban raw milk in England. She is drinking milk from her own cows. Please, all of you bureaucrats and government officials, respect our human right to choose.
