Busy morning. That's all you get for a few hours, so add your own in the comments.
I'm a suporter of the Conservative government but does anybody else think that the government is not talking to the people enough?
Now I'm not advocating a Paul Martin approach where every time the PM has a good bowel movement the press are called in but at the very least the PM and his Cabinet should be giving Canadians the who, what, where, why and how of policy. Not doing so leaves all the media power in the hands of the opposition and the media themselves.
Come on PM Harper! TALK to the people!
zip ,dont believe the press views .harper will not be guided by the press and their wanked views.think man.
According to the statistics, of the ten countries cited, support of violent jihad against civilian targets ranges from 7% (German muslims) to 46% (Nigerian muslims), averaging out at 20%.
The lefties who like to drop by and proclaim that 'the vast majority of muslims are peaceful and against jihad' can eat their words. 20 million savages who want to kill you and your family in Indonesia alone.
End of the "vast majority of moderate muslims" argument.
Landing in Indonesia and noticing the 100,000 + murder Bush/Americans/Infidels protest march, Bush naively says "Isn't democracy great...there'd be no protest allowed without it."
Right. And I suppose there'd be no Christian beheadings (atlas shrugged horror pictures) without it either. Democracy my ass.
Zip,
There is plenty of information out there about what the CPC government is doing if you look for it. They are just not spoon-feeding the Canadian media. Frankly, I think thats a good thing. It's about time that organizations like the CBC started reporting the news again, instead of being mouthpieces for the government.
File this under PMSH must be doing something right.
OTTAWA - Prime Minister Stephen Harper's foreign policy strategy is a joke and is causing Canada to be hated around the world, British politician George Galloway said Monday.

Useful reality-based perspective on the environmental issues, now that Jack Layton has defined his latest demands.
Good God Kate, woke up this morning with 20 times more hits than I've ever had... thanks. But I'm definitely not on the left if thats what you're implying, and I take offense to the notion. I just don't think Harper is handling China properly is all. And I was emphatically not saying that China isn't terribly oppressive, just that I think there's little Harper can do about it.
Also, if I may be so immodest as to offer one of my posts as a reader tip: I trash Layton's environment demands in this post, by comparing them to global targets (UK, Ger, etc.)... Layton's are beyond reasonable.

Hopefully I can win back some right wing cred.
My point is not that there is no information out there but rather that the PM by sidestepping the MSM is giving advantage to the opposition and the press themselves.
Let's face it most Canadians ONLY get their news from "reputable sources" i.e. the MSM, so if the PM isn't talking to the MSM he isn't talking to the majority of Canadians and that is disasterous policy.
The battle for information is possibly THE most important thing for a minority parliament where everyone is looking for advantage and to get their message to the voters before the next election.
There are tons of information out there, those that realy care (like those here) search it out for themselves. But we aren't the ones that need it, the trick is to use the MSM at their own game and get it out to the rest, the average Canadian.

Arbour visits Gaza area shelled by Israelis
By MOHAMMED DARAGHMEH (AP)
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights
Louise Arbour
kicked off a five-day trip to the region Monday, assuring residents of an embattled Palestinian neighbourhood in Gaza "that the world has not abandoned them."
Arbour, a former Canadian Supreme Court justice and chief prosecutor for UN war crimes tribunals on Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, began her visit with a tour of a residential neighbourhood in Beit Hanoun, where 19 members of an extended family were killed this month in an errant Israeli artillery attack.
A large crowd quickly gathered around Arbour, showing her pictures of dead and wounded relatives and calling for punishment of Israeli soldiers responsible for the attack.
Arbour urged Israeli and Palestinian leaders to stop the "cycle of violence" and do more to protect civilians.
"I'm basically here to express my concern and bring some comfort, I hope, by showing these victims that the world has not abandoned them," Arbour said. "I think we can't continue to see civilians who are not the authors of their own misfortune continue to suffer to the extent of which I see."
As she spoke, Israeli bulldozers tore through nearby fields that the army said are used by militants to fire rockets. The Israeli operation took place in another part of town, and did not directly affect Arbour's visit.

Google George Galloway. Besides being a nut case, he was investigated, along with Mo in the Saddam Oil-for-Food scandal. Criticism from a fool is the best compliment ever. Also applies to Taber, Van dusen, Weston, Bougue, MacDonald,... actually all Canada's MSM, except a few like Terrance Corcoran, Andrew Coyne, Peter Foster, and some others.
zip - Harper IS providing lots of information about his policies; he and his ministers have long interviews with various newspeople - including the CBC, CTV, Global.
However, what is going on is a political campaign against Harper by the Liberal/NDP MSM. They are against Harper because he is a Conservative. The MSM are heavily biased - and no matter what policy or action the CPC carries out, the MSM will criticize it, using ad hominem, misinformation and deliberate fiction.
They are the ones informing the Canadian public that Harper 'won't talk to the press' - this is an open lie. He's had long interviews with them, and he and his ministers actually answer questions. The Liberal gov't never, ever, answered a question -either in the House or to the news. Never; it was all specious empty rhetoric.
The MSM are relentless in their campaign against Harper and the Conservatives. Daily. Never, ever, is there a good policy or act. Quite remarkable. They have little to say against the Liberals or NDP. The CBC has hour long broadcasts promoting the Liberal/NDP agendas of Kyoto, health care etc - all brainwashing the public. Canadian Press provides reams of information with lots of editorializing about how harmful Harper is to Canada.
Just yesterday, we had Craig Oliver on CTV, interviewing MacKay. Each question asked by Oliver was sheer fiction - eg that the US had asked Canada to patrol N. Korean shipping. MacKay replied - No, this is fiction; we've never been asked. BUT - the same people and gibbering Jane Taber, had asked the Minister of Defense only the previous day - the same question. And received the same reply - No, we've never been asked.
Facts and truth don't matter to the Canadian MSM. They are spreading fiction - and their agenda is pure misinformation as propaganda against Harper.
Endless propaganda. This is due, not really to the Press Gallery situation, but, more deeply, because the vast majority of our media systems are embedded with the leftist latte crowd.
Olaf - I think you are taking the wrong view of morality. Are you saying that because Canada is a small country, then, it shouldn't speak out to China against human rights abuses? Because it wouldn't do any good? That's unethical. No matter how small you are, if you are aware of an amoral action, then, you are obliged to speak out.
Remember, the nations said nothing about the Holocaust; if only a few had spoken up, even though they were, each, small - that voice would have been heard. But - no-one said a thing.
Same thing in China. And no, you cannot say that 'if we sit back and economically trade with them' - they'll get over this 'human rights abuses'. This might possibly be the case, but, it's unethical to 'sit back and wait'.
It' isn't an 'either-or' situation as you are suggesting (either trade or speak out). It's both.
As long as Canada has resources China will speak to us.They will probably buy the tar sands and when a Canadian govt nationalizes it,the crap will hit the fan.

Also, they've put 15 percent tax on plastic grocery store bags and this has reduced usage of these bags by 90 percent which is boon to environment and savings of millions. Britain is taking a close look at this policy.
Thanks Karl,
I'll take a look, and link it into my post with all the other people who disagree with me, which is apparently somewhere in the range of everyone... I'm not sure if I'll buy the argument, because it's my perspective that if Canadians are confident enough in our values, etc., than we can be a positive if indirect influence.
Further, my argument that we should trade with China regardless of human rights abuses was based largely on the fact that I'd rather China trade with us than with Arab/African dictators. That's reasonable I think.
China isn't one person, it's a conglomeration of rapidly evolving societies. We mostly hear the bad from media sources (of all sorts) and in a country of 1.3 Billion people there's lots of good and bad so be careful on pre-judgements based solely on the most prevailent information. Freedom and democracy needs a middle class to exist and middle classes don't exist without trade...so let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater.
That said, Harper used a rare opportunity to take a principled stand as Canada's leader against the bad that we know. With China's thirst for resources, Canada's got stroke. Harper's message is being heard loud and clear. Freedom and democracy in China just got another nudge.
martin b- exactly; freedom and democracy requires a middle class, and China is rapidly changing its population from a peasant to a middle class. Democracy will emerge, then, 'from the bottom up'.
That's the difference between China and the ME. Both were peasant class economies; the ME retained that system by the use of tribalism, with 90% of the population kept as low peasant class and dominated by an elite tribe, who controlled the only source of revenue - oil.
China moved its massive population out of peasantry into industrialism by force, by top-down communism. As the population has industrialized, and moved into a middle class, communism will essentially melt away.
In the ME, the oil has set up military dictatorships and prevented a middle class emerging. That's the basic reason for Islamic fascism.
Olaf - I disagree with your logic, where you suggest that 'it's better for China to trade with us than with the Evil Dictators in Africa/Asia'. That's yet another 'either-or' scenario. China isn't going to stop trade with anyone; it is not going to impose sanctions against Canada if we bring up their human rights. China needs consumers and Africa/Asia are not in an economic position for that. Canada has an ethical duty to speak up. What if it were Canada that was breaching the human rights of its citizens? Would you want the world to maintain silence because of trade?
Hey maz2,
I was just about to post that story about GG Jean and her speech on the "...bitter legacy of European colonialism."
She also said "(They were) stripped of themselves, of their language, their name, their memory, their history, of their basic dignity as women and men, and were reduced to slavery and deported to the Americas. . . ."
What about Islamic colonialism in Africa? Isn't African language and culture being stripped in favour of Arabic ones?
Also, the Arabic world were HUGE slave traders. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the Arabic slave trade out of Africa continued for hundreds of years after the European slave trade stopped.
But then, those facts don't bash Western-world- whitey so we'll just sweep them under the rug.
Haha,
Thanks for the update Kate.

What the hell is the GG doing in Africa?
Why are Canadian tax dollars being pissed away on this trip?
Why do we still have a GG in the year 2006?
Just thinking out loud.
Rob,
You're right. The Muslims created and maintained the African slave trade - and still do. In fact the Arab word for black and slave is the same - Abed.
Blacks are considered inferior by Arab muslims, hence the continued slaughter and enslavement of Black Muslims by Arab Muslims in Sudan.
The Barbary Muslims didn't stop there. Over a million White Europeans were enslaved between the early 18th and 19th centuries. The Muslims went as far as the Irish and English coasts to maurade and enslave whole settlements. This was finally ended by the American navy.
The GG needs to learn history before she bashes European (read British) colonialism. Great representative of the Queen.

This report puts John Ibbitson's article to the test.
Does John Ibbitson read/analyse conservative blogs/bloggers/commenters? Ibbitson does not copy/plagiarise the contents of the said blogs; however, Ibbitson surely has the message(s) down pat.
Yes, Ibbitson has arrived at the same conclusions as these blogs:
Bob Rae is the choice of the eastern elites- Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal- of Power Corp., of Mao Strong, et al, to throw Harper and the disgusting middle-class into the Bow River, finally, and forever.
Key quote from the Sun:
"Finally, Ibbitson notes, these elites don't yet realize that economic power in Canada is shifting west because of the oil boom. And that once it does, their reign is over."
Just a recap, again, from this keyboard:

Globe sees the light at last!
Toronto Sun
Many Sun readers wonder why Stephen Harper got so much grief from other Canadian media last week when he rightly raised with China's president the issue of China's secret detention of a Canadian citizen.
Or why what strikes many people as a logical proposal by Justice Minister Vic Toews to give the police some input into the appointment of judges, is greeted by our legal community with hysteria.
Or why, on almost any issue he tackles -- child care, foreign policy, the environment -- Harper is met by a tsunami of vitriolic, sneering, over-the-top opposition.
Globe and Mail Ottawa columnist John Ibbitson has helped to answer those questions in a remarkably blunt column last Friday. Headlined "Bob Rae and the China syndrome" Ibbitson said the fears of many westerners (and other conservatives) that Canada is run by an eastern liberal elite are valid.
This is, he said: "A governing class of senior public servants, academics, artists, journalists, lawyers and judges (that) belongs to a community of common interest physically and intellectually centred in downtown Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa."
These liberal elites, Ibbitson writes, are "very displeased" with Harper, viewing him as "a wrecker: a cold-blooded leader of a band of vulgar ideologues that, with every action, destabilizes the liberal consensus that has dominated our federal government for generations."
They also "despise" frontrunning Liberal leadership contender Michael Ignatieff for working abroad for so long and then presuming he can return here and be handed the Liberal leadership.
Thus, says Ibbitson, "the Liberal consensus is rallying around Bob Rae" whom it sees as "One of Us," even if he once "strayed" into the NDP. It has chosen him "to replace that awful man in the Prime Minister's Office" and is now doing all it can to help. ...-

On August 14, 2006, Donna Segal, the good Senator's wife, donated $5,000 to Bobbles' leadership campaign: http://www.elections.ca/fin/lea/lib2006/lib_raeb_2006_r1.pdf
In case you're wondering whether Donna is Hugh's beloved: http://www.parl.gc.ca/common/senmemb/senate/isenator_det.asp?senator_id=2786&sortord=N&Language=E&M=M
So, Senator Segal, do you REALLY think Rae is the most dangerous leadership candidate for your Party or are you helping a buddy out? Did Bobbles know about it or is this something you cooked up on your own? Did the PMO suggest to you that it would be a good idea to help Bobbles win the leadership and you were only too happy to help?
I'm pretty certain that the answers to these questions are both interesting and relevant.
