My connection is a little shakey this morning - my guess is that the heavy snow we have is messing with the lines (I'm on dial-up).
So, for now, a readers tips, open thread post to keep you all amused.
A reminder - a few of you are crossing the line with profanity and slurs ("frogs" ???). Cut it out, or find yourself booted.

Dial-up? Wow, I didn't think anyone was still on dial up. Here in Southern Manitoba just about everyone has switched to these high-speed line of sight radio towers.
Dial-up is now a distant memory, somedays it seemed like smoke signals would have been faster. That's what I'll be telling my grandkids anyways when they start complaining about connection speeds.
Ignoring Canada's conservative readers

MONTREAL - Pity Sorya Ingrid Gaulin. Her role as VP of Public Relations at Indigo Books and Music demanded she confront the wrathful public face of North America's most formidable conservative tiger, Mark Steyn...
...Indigo isn't biased against Steyn in particular. They don't stock many -- and certainly don't promote any -- conservative books...
...Conservative books are a tough institutional sell everywhere...
...I visited my local Westmount library, which caters to a highly educated demographic. Lots of liberal anti-Americanism, a tiny paucity of conservative texts...
A must read article in the National Post. Justin Trudeau - The burden of greatness.

Snow on the lines? How about when it's windy?
I remember when i was in sask and i'd call people in the country in the winter. If there was a kind of unusual submarine quality to the connection i knew it was windy and there was probably too much snow blowing to get there easily. Just curious.
Thank you Kate for your non-tolerance comment regarding profanity and slurs. Those weapons of hate add no value to a place known for intelligent discussion and debate.
I regularly and enthusiastically share information from this site with family and friends but the content in recent comments is personally concerning. This is a platinum quality information forum but the raw profanity becoming more common in the comments will harm integrity and appeal if it's left to continue.
Kudos for your stand!
It's not a new policy.
And why people can't read those blue letters above is anyone's guess. I don't read every comment, especially those on longer threads, so people get away with stupidity and then consider that a green light to take it a step further.
I have a very light moderating touch here, and I'd like to keep it that way. But if things get out of control to the point where moderating the blog is such a pain in the ass that it ceases to be fun anymore - I won't bother with closing comments.
I'll just pull the plug on the whole damned thing.

Take a look at the StatsCan statistics on homicide for 2005.
There's also a Farmer Bob Rifle Registry issue.
In 2005, there were 658 homicides in Canada. About a third of that number, or 222 people, were killed with a firearm. They don't break out the type of firearm, but I'm willing to bet there were few, if any, killed with a restricted rifle.

America Misses
Americans avoid facing and understanding the problem at our peril.
The fundamentalist march is gaining strength and it is a complex headache to deal with.
The American people have chosen to not deal with the problem, but rather to look the other way and hope for the best.
The majority of the American people do not realize the true and urgent nature of the common thread running through the Taliban, Hezbollah, al Quaeda, the Muqtada al Sadr killing squads of Sadr City Iraq, and Hamas.
Americans fail to see the peril clearly because the Media has managed to avoid joining the dots so that no clear picture of understanding is generally available.
This is a time when all free nations should be joining with the EU and Nato to restrain Iran from its Islamofascist take-over of the Middle East.
If the radical Mullahs , [ not the citizens], of Iran are allowed to take over Iraq and build their world Centre of Terrorism from that base, just as Osama bin Laden declared, our military conflicts will become desperately massive.
Pulling out of Afghanistan and Iraq would condemn millions of people who hoped for a free and civilized life to massive torture and death. Citizens of Iran also had hopes of a modern way of life but can not speak out now without losing their heads.
Today we seem to be repeating history under similar storm clouds of war to those overhead in 1938 before our struggle against Hitler. = TG

Unnoticed Election Day Story
(NYC deconstructs sex: "Born Whatever" --this could be big)
WorldNet Daily ^ | November 8, 2006 | Joseph Farah
But a huge story broke yesterday that got almost no attention because it was overshadowed by stories of people going to the polls voting. In fact, I would dare say that this story could have more impact on our lives in America in the next 20 years than the results of yesterday's midterm congressional elections. I'm talking about news of an imminent action by the New York City Board of Health
to permit people born in the city to change the sex recorded on their birth certificates and,
thus, change their legal sexual identity.
Think about the implications of this...-

UNIFIL Goes to Bed Early in Lebanon
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon is taking evenings off.
Can’t blame them, really. Hey, it’s dangerous out there. (LGF)
Hizbullah terrorists are free to roam at night without fear of being identified by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), according to a report by the German paper Der Spiegel.
Spanish UNIFIL official Richard Ortax admitted to the paper that no patrols are carried out at night
“because of the danger involved.”
UNIFIL commanders said their function is to
“observe changes in the behavior of the local population.”
One junior officer told Der Spiegel he was glad that his battalion had only left its camp once. “It’s absurd,” he said. “We landed here and set up our tent city, but since then we’ve only left the camp to drive around and to make sure that we’re seen.”
The report cites a long tradition of UNIFIL inaction, which it says allowed time for
a Finnish contingent to construct a giant sauna
and an Indian contingent to decorate its base with traditional Indian artwork. ...-

What's with the Justin Trudeau flare-up? 'Hosts the Giller Prize last night ('notice how the writer who had an "in" with Margaret Atwood won?), 'showed up a few weeks ago at a Business Appreciation dinner in a town near me, where he was the guest speaker, and now there's an article in the National Post about him?
What's up? Surely not a future run at a political career?
The guy has nothing to recommend him ("teacher and environmentalist" is how he's billed??), except the silver spoon he was born with--not that I blame him for that. BUT, anything I've heard him say is purely left/lib party line kitch. There's no original thinking, just platitudes delivered in a limpid, overly dramatic manner.
For the life of me, I don't find him either "charismatic," "charming," or good looking (nor did I find his father any of the above). Apparently, Toronto Star columnist Rosie DiManno wrote that he seems "unfocused and superficial, a dilettante trading on the family name."
That's not much to run on if you're hoping to aspire to political office. I think Justin Trudeau would be better doing a road trip in his father's Mercedes, the one he drove away in at his wedding. He needs to see a lot more of the real world before he'll have anything of import to say to anyone.

KABUL, Afghanistan — NATO-led troops aided by military aircraft killed 15 suspected insurgents in eastern Afghanistan after the militants opened fire on the Western patrol, wounding one soldier, an official said Wednesday.
The troops came under attack on Tuesday in Barmal district of Paktika province, which borders Pakistan, said Capt. Jose Lopez, a spokesman for the NATO-led troops.
Troops returned fire and called in close air support, killing 15 suspected insurgents, Lopez said. A NATO soldier was also wounded in the leg. ...-
Commenter:
The media, with their constant drumbeat of "resurgent Taliban plans new offensive" nonsense, will never admit that Afghanistan is not Iraq.
Afghanistan is a dry, sparsely populated country where large groups of people stand out like targets at a shooting gallery on our FLIR and night vision. Iraq is urbanized and is full of large population centers, and there's too much risk of collateral damage. Afghanistan isn't, and so the Taliban will continue to die in large numbers. ...-

On a much lighter note, tonight's "Celebrity Jeopardy!" features Regis Philbin, some star from "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy", and the much-discussed legal expert and TV browbeater Nancy Grace.
Ms. Grace-less took an early lead, but was well down by the end of the first session. In the middle of the second session, she answered a question about Spanish dancing with "What is flamingo?". When ruled incorrect, she interrupted with "I'm from the South, I said 'flamenco'."
A brief interjection - I went through a Jeopardy audition earlier this year. It was explained to all of us that the judges have direct feeds from our microphones, and that any disputes about answers would take place off air.
Apparently, Ms. Grace-less felt these rules didn't apply to her. When Alex told her "You said 'flamingo' not 'flamenco'.", her response was "I object!!". Alex's quick reply "Overruled!".
In the Final Jeopardy, (the question was "The US National Tennis Center was renamed in her honour in 2004"), Grace-less wrote down, and then crossed out the correct response (Billie Jean King) to put in Babe Zaharias instead . She finished last.
And the gay guy? He was leading going into Final, but apparently gay arithmetic is not very good; he had the correct response, but only bet $999, and lost to Regis by $1.
So this "brilliant" legal mind gets beaten by a gay clothes' critic and the king of two-tone suits. Looks good on her!

Nancy Pelosi spoke on PBS today on the subject of Iraq. Here's a quote that may provide a window into her thinking.

So what is being accomplished by our being there? A responsible redeployment outside of Iraq ... The president -- victory is elusive. Victory is subjective. What does he mean by 'victory'?"

Nancy Pelosi scares me.
She has that smile pasted on her face. And look at the eyes: shifty, lifeless, deer caught in the headlights.
According to her, the U.S. presence in Iraq "is not making America safer"? Hmmm. I wonder what she thinks is the reason there hasn't been another major Islamofascist attack on American soil for over five years.
Since Pelosi became Speaker of the House, I'm feeling a little less safe. I wonder what HER plans are to keep Al-Qaeda out of America?
Pelosi's also whining about gender politics. Poor me. I'm a "she" and we shes, says Nancy, have a pretty rough time of it in Washington.
Why doesn't she just shut up and get on with her job? I'm not looking forward to years of Nance and Hil moaning and groaning about how tough it's been to claw their way over the guys in the ol' boys' network to get to the top of the heap.
