Harper is just preening for the domestic audience. The Chinese are very sophisticated geopolitical operators and apparently are completed nonplussed over his remarks. I would be very suprised if the bureacracies of the two countries had an understanding amongst each other that these remarks mean absolutely zip.

In the final few minutes, the poll magically changed to 50/50. Now what was that you said about the MSM not likely to mess with online poll numbers? You bet it happens....especially at the G&M. The G&M also very carefully controls their comments boards to tilt the perceptions.

Harper's comments are purely an empty gesture for domestic consumption only. It's business as usual between China and Canada anyone who thinks otherwise is deluding themselves.

China is a totalitarioan dictatorship. There are no elections, there is no democracy, there is no room for dissent. China censors what their people see and read. In what way are they sophisticated? Is it pragmatic to get on with the repression and torture and killings?

On Thursday, he was dissing Harper loud and long and praising Chretien and Martin for their astuteness in not going too far in pressing China about its human rights record. 'Wonder what changed his mind?

'Heard on CBC radio news this morning (I listen to Music and Company, a great show, and the news propaganda is an unfortunate by-product) that NOW the Chinese want a meeting with Stephen Harper. The PM has said, OK but that his government won't allow the Chinese to frame the talk. Apparently, there's a Muslim Canadian who has been held in a Chinese jail for a long time under appalling circumstances. PMSH will obviously be wanting to talk about that.

The G & M poll was running 60% for the PM's stand and 40% against when I voted. After a busy day in the trenches, that just makes my day. Smile.

The wording of a question will lead the respondent. This is nothing new. Using PMSH's name in a poll will undoubtedly influence the results because some people in this country (1/3?) disagree with him no matter what the issue.

Craig Oliver deserves the fossil of the year award for actually being a fossil and for being dumb enough to forget that:

Chretien's family has always had business agreements in China. Why would he want to blow them for himself by mentioning such inconvenient things like human rights?

The real story is that a Canadian named Huseyin Celil is being held by China and Harper said he'd raise that issue at the meeting. Instead the media has just tried to portray Harper as inept.
