Here's one to bookmark;
I am disconnecting myself from the Internet and my TV, all in the name of science, in the hopes of coming to some newfound understanding of how these mediums affect our lives. A friend of mine will be maintaining a blog for me while I am disconnected, and one of the topics I will be talking about is the positive and negative aspects of blogs, especially in terms of how they have facilitated or hindered political debate.
Day One.

as long as it's not you Kate then clatius hookwormus can do whatever the heck he likes...
Kate, you scared me. Is this guy insane? What's next, cutting yourself off from air in the interests of science?
Hi there, unhooked the TV over 18 monthes. Do not miss it at all, should of done it sooner. As far as the internet goes I use it for my job in the oil patch. As for the political debate, it like going into the bar, telling a story to one group of people and staying for the end. It will not be same and it will be very entertaining. As a matter of fact its just like reading the comments on the blog sites. Most times they get off topic the longer the debate goes on. I don't think it would be a conversation if it wasn't. I've pretty much ditched TV viewing but I couldn't go without my Internet.
Here in Pennsylvania (like much of the US), one has a choice of Comcast Cable or ... Comcast Cable. Given it's defacto monopoly status, naturally it's become quite expensive, with regular price increases far above inflation.
In reaction, I cut back my cable subscription from Basic + Standard (for about $50/mo) to just the Basic (for $12/mo) required to also subscribe to their Cable Broadband ($42/mo). With all the excise and sales taxes, it had gone to about $100/mo!
(The Basic is about 20 garbage channels, with leftoid garbage MSNBC being the news channel. Yuck! All the decent channels are naturally in the upgraded, more cost Standard package. To get the Standard, one must also buy the Basic. They don't miss a trick!)
The silver lining in this bleak gray cloud is that I now also have Vonage VOIP phone service, for $15/mo! An un-fond farewell to the greedy mediocrity of Bell and Sprint at 2 to 3 times the cost!
The bottom line on TV is that I rarely watch it now. As the technical quality of TV has steadily increased, there is a decided inverse correlation, to declining quality of the programming. It's mostly garbage.
I do miss Fox News, the History Channel and the Discovery Channel. But that's it.
Im thinking of getting a pirate dish so'se I can tell ma bell to shove it like I told teddie boy 2 years ago.
my concern is the loss of signal stuff and inherent risk the thing will stop working for good way too soon.
I disconnected from the internet from 2001-2004. I didn't die. It wasn't a big deal.
I also used to use a dialup modem to visit BBS sites in 1992. I don't miss that either. The internet is a distraction. No more. No less.

Any coincidence you did this to time with the midterm elections in the States?
I did that in January: I went skiing the weekend before the 23rd, and then went to a lousy presentation for my ex-girlfriends new pyramid scheme, and therefore didn't have to endure any television/radio/newspaper/blogosphere coverage of an election I wasn't going to like the final result of. It did wonders for my sanity.

Someone didn't like the outcome of the elections.

I don't get it. This dweeb is "cutting himself off" from the internet by . . . posting a daily blog on the internet?
If he wants to discover what life was like pre computer, just toss the machine out and write a diary. Or does that not garner enough attention?
Ah. So, he's really just peeking through his fingers to see how we all react to his ignoring us! Heh. Kids today.

Don't have TV for 7 years now. No withdrawals whatsoever. Internet however causes withdrawal if it's not there.
I mostly watch THE HISRORY CHANNEL cant stand those mindless sit-coms they have now a days
My TV watching has subsided... I mostly watch the military channel(Discovery), but even then it just tends to be on while I am online...
TV, I could see being without. The internet? No way.
Much rather have the internet than tv, currently I spend far greater hours on line reading than I do watching tv, the internet is pure information at the ready for me. Used for both good and bad I suppose, but then doesn't that responsibility fall upon the user?
The other point about blogs as they currently operate, is you get to have your say if invited by a host, ask questions or pass on your own thoughts, like I am now, quite a bit differnt pace than the current run of news.
I seek out many different opinions from opposing sides to differing opinions on the same side. This is the meat of it for me. Many good blogs/sites will have great discussions or responses by some pretty articulate people - and yes open comments can also be swamped quickly by idiots, as we've all sadly witnessed before, but usually the brightest and insightful shine through and they tend to be ones I focus on and remember. Try not to be distracted by the fluff and scruff, as it's par for the course, after all we put up with such awful tv commercials for decades.
Yep, 'for sure' it can suck you time if you allow it, it's like anything else though,
balance works.
Now it's time to go walk the dog, and he still want's to know why we packed his god, the BBQ, away. Almost saw tears in his mischievous beady little eyes, as we hoisted it into the shed and shut the door.
Have a great evening all.
Just took allmost 3 months no tv,and no internet.
Got an antanae and have 3 chanels. Imediately realized I hadn't missed anything and doubt I will ever pay for cable again.
Got internet back yesterday and am glad to have it. I'll save money on books and newspapers.
Big deal eh.
