Baker's Panel Rules Out Iraq Victory
By ELI LAKE - Staff Reporter of the Sun
October 12, 2006
WASHINGTON — A commission formed to assess the Iraq war and recommend a new course has ruled out the prospect of victory for America, according to draft policy options shared with The New York Sun by commission officials.
Currently, the 10-member commission — headed by a secretary of state for President George H.W. Bush, James Baker — is considering two option papers, "Stability First" and "Redeploy and Contain," both of which rule out any prospect of making Iraq a stable democracy in the near term.
Iggy was on Giggles and again tried to explain himself. He said both sides broke the laws of war.
Would someone please explain what the Laws of War are.
The new [Toronto based - where else? ], Reza Magazine.
On sale at Muslim retailers.
*I love my religion. I love the flexibility that it offers. But a lot of people don't see, or don't seem to get, that flexibility,* says Tahmina Reza, one of the founders of the new, Toronto-based magazine.
Its first official issue was released in September and will be sold at Muslim retailers in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Edmonton.
*Aver* is an English verb meaning to declare forcefully.
She says its founders created what they intend to be a quarterly magazine because they want to reach out to like-minded Muslims.
*We wanted a place to discuss the issues,* she says.
*We wanted to deal with issues that would make people uncomfortable, like relationships with Jewish people and homosexuality.*
Reza stopped short of calling the magazine liberal, but it accepts content from whoever is willing to submit.
Its website, ..w.Aver.com, has poems, short stories about being harassed by the RCMP, and essays about religion and politics.
It also has an article that speculates on an alternate reality. *What if a Muslim did the Montreal shootings?*
================= Aver.ca
When I clicked on the E-Toronto Star link to *Reza Magazine*, it first linked instead to the Video debunking the father and son behind the concrete trash container ducking from staged Iraeli gunfire. Amazing! That is the first propaganda intercept I have ever seen in Canada.
Aver magazine is not the *moderate Muslims speaking out* as we had hoped for, seems to me anyway. Too bad. = TG
Ooops! That is Aver Magazine. . Reza is the head honcho.= TG
Watching the so called leadership debate, and it seems they have forgotten why they are there. To tell people why they should be elected. Instead it appears to be an election debate, as our PM is being attacked by all of them. Now they are discussing the collapse of the bridge in Que. Do they really expect us to blame Harper for that.
They keep saying, liberals have to do blah blah blah. Will Steven Harper be elected as liberal leader. Rona held her own against Craig, as he tried to hammer her, and kept interupting her when she tried to answer. I did learn that he lives in a house full of puffers. Craig said the auto industry and cars are not responsible for pollution, as much as ABs oil is. His message, don't touch Ont but brutilize AB. Whose for the separation of AB is the libs get back into office. We will have a new premier soon, one that wont give in to Ottawa like liberal Ralph did.
RE: New generation recruitment ads
I don’t like the US Marines ad. It looks like they are appealing to boys who would like to play the ultimate video game.
I’d say that the Brit Mechanized Infantry is the best. The Canadian ad has a bit too much civil defense stuff when we’re recruiting for forces that are at war.
This isn’t a recruitment ad but it could be trimmed to make a good one:

Things are getting hot and heavy in the debate. Dion and Iggy are going at it big time.
Thank God for forums that allow freely expressed comments (such as SDA et al..)
I am becoming more and more frustrated when i feel the need to respond to an issue and get muzzled. What is the point in having reader feedback when they filter your comments or outright ignore them?
I have tried many times to leave insightful comment on CTV,CBC,The Toronto Star etc. and have had the comments sent to a gulag somewhere..it seems if your comments do not meet their often biased standards of agreement with the article, you are filed under "G"...
It really gives their slant to the issue weight when all comments seem to agree with what they are stating..it's a rigged game, and it is really frustrating.
Liberal Debate closing -Iggy
He's onto "all of us dream" for a better Canada (he's repeated it several times).
Uhmmmmm someone may want to tell the rookie politician that "I have a dream" has kinda been done before.
What was the CBC thinking in doing a miniseries on the FLQ Crisis of October 1970? It just goes to show how in the past, looking backwards, the CBC is.
Who cares anymore? Are they trying to get Canadians onside with the "separate nation" Quebecois, or what?
And then to hear that R.H. Thompson was the star: Give me a break. Between him and Eric Peterson variously popping up in Canadian productions, you'd think there was no new talent around. I suspect that there isn't, but maybe that's because the CBC keeps using retreads.
Again, my only consolation is to find out how few people watched it. On the other hand, I guess we paid for this show. Enough, already.
What's the solution to the CBC continuing to waste our money?
Recruiting Ads - all were very revealing about their sponsoring country. By far - the Canadian ads are the most subtle - universal - good vs evil. FIGHT fear .. FIGHT disaster FIGHT chaos
FIGHT with the Canadian Army.
We are the only military the uses the WORD fight. And that is the honest beauty of those ads.
Great creative. Money very well spent.
Michael Toronto
The debate. The leadership of wankers debate, that is, are all over Harper. The main theme is that he's devisive and therefore not Canadian.
Notwithstanding the Quebec sponsorship scandal - "Alberta can blow me," "Beer and popcorn," SSM. Outright contempt towards Christians. And the overarching Liberal message - if you're not Liberal, you're not Canadian. I wonder how far that will go against their very well documented bigotry and exclusion.
Their arrogance is still fully intact with comments like, "We created Canada." "The party that wrote and brought in the charter, and the only ones that know what it means and how to implement it."
And of course typical US bashing from every single one of these creeps. Harper = Bush, etc.
As far as my absolute abhorence of Liberals go, I didn't mind Ignatieff. Now I find him thoroughly irritating, Wretchedly and falsely earnest. And three non-answers for every question, that he will liberally flip flop between, even better than dithers.

The Laws of War! Whoever wins the war makes the laws. Thank GOD so far the right side has been winning.
Is the Caledonia citizens site down ?
I can't watch the Liberal debate but from the comments above, on Ignatieff, I'd say he is behaving - as Ignatieff. Remember, he's an academic which means that he can readily have three opinions that contradict each other, and expect you to accept all three. That's called 'nuance' in LiberalSpeak. It's called sophistry by Aristotle. I call it garbage, but that's me.
As for his 'dreams', that a basic tactic of Liberals, which treats the population as ignorant slugs, capable only of beer, popcorn, and emotional manipulation. His 'dreams' are emotional manipulation; after all a dream is just that, a dream - just as his words to the Quebec Cloud Dwellers were emotional manipulation of the peasants.
Contrast that with Harper's pragmatism, wherein he spoke during the election, and continues to speak, of practical, do-able actions. A gov't that operates solely by dreams is unaccountable, for the failure of those dreams to actualize can be attributed to anyone.
Remember how Chretien and Martin never informed the public about the stumpage fees as the basis of the argument over softwood sales? Instead, they manipulated the public into 'dreams' about the Evil USA, when in reality, it was Canada that was subsidizing the forestry industry, massively, with ridiculously low stumpage fees. We weren't told the facts; we were emotionally manipulated. For votes.
There's an excellent article by Rebecca Bynum in the newenglishreview.org on Freedom: True and False, that outlines Islam as a dogma that is the very opposite of freedom. It's quite an article.
I'd also comment that Paul Bryan's argument for the posting of election results while the polls are still open - is an empty argument. He claims that not permitting it 'violates his charter rights of freedom of expression'. Nonsense. Describing data, statistics, is not freedom of expression, which refers to viewpoints, opinions and personal analysis.
After all, using that same argument, I could, as a nurse, doctor, psychiatrist, lawyer, claim that it was my 'right of freedom of expression' to tell the local tabloids all about the health, mental stability, financial affairs of my clients. And that anyone denying me this right would be infringing my 'freedom of expression'.
My view is that the poll silence is to prevent 'copycat syndrome', a mode of behaviour that does indeed exist, whether operative in everyone buying the 'hot toy of the season' or everyone bashing the USA/Bush because it's 'the way to go'.
maryT:
Regarding your question about the laws of war...
The concpet of the "Laws of War" all about a set of protocols agreed to by nations that have signed on (which I think is almost all of them) to the conventions that cover the "rules of engagement" when it comes to nations going to war. The three big ones are the Hague Conventions, the Geneva Conventions, and the United Nations Charter.
Originally, the idea was to cement the idea that war is, in the final analysis, a political struggle between nations...and that the "enemy" soldiers who are fighting the war should not be looked on as the "bad" individuals who are responsible for the fighting. Rather, they should be seen as tools of the political leaders of "the other side." By creating this idealistic distance between the fighter and the cause for which they fight, the conventions aim to help eliminate unnecessary suffering and mistreatment of "enemy" soldiers and civilians. Think of them as an affirmation that in war things get blown up and people get killed. But, killing and maiming shoud not be done for the sake of killing and maiming...but to make the enemy nation suffer enough "casualities" (in both human and materialistic terms) that it will lose the will to keep up the fight for its political stance.
Thus, the "Laws of War" are meant to provide a framework where unecessary killing and maiming can be kept to a minimum by having each signatory nation acknowledge that the creation of unecessary suffering should be avoided to the extent possible. A small example. One of the rules introduced under the Hague Conventions was the banning of "three-sided bayonets" (bayonets with a triangular configuration). The reason...when a soldier is stabbed with one of these and survives, the wound it leaves is extraordinarily hard to stitch shut. This would leave the possibility of slow death (due to unstoppable bleeding or infection) unreasonably high. So, all nations agreed to ban them since if a soldier gets stabbed with a regular blade (and survives), they are just as effectively taken out of action as they would be with the three-sided version...and they are more likely to survive in the long run. Take the soldier out, yes. Cause extended uncessary suffering, no.
In claiming that Israel committed a "war crime", Iggy was referring to the fact that civilian targets were hit by Israeli fire and, as a result, civilians were killed. Now, strictly speaking, hitting a civilian target is not against the rules of war. But, deliberately targetting them is. You have to prove intent. What the MSM has been so reluctant to report is that Hezbollah was using civilians and civilian positions as both cover and areas in which to store their military hardware...also against the rules of war. In fact, because the Hezbollah actions of hiding among civilians effectively forced Israel to return fire on areas where civilians were interspersed with Hezbollah fighters, an effective argument could be made that Israel should be absolved of all blame because Hezbollah committed a crime by wilfully putting their own civilians in harm's way...which resulted in their deaths.
Here's my big problem with all of this crap: I don't see how anyone can accuse anyone else of a "war crime" at all in the recent Hezbollah/Israel conflict. In fact, I think that the term "war" has been misused more times than it has been properly used since WWII.
To have a "war"...you must have nations with political interests sign declarations for which the end goal is to seek the surrender of another nation that has done the same. In the end, political leaders of both sides are supposed to have to sit down and sign a ceasefire (or surrender) agreement of some sort. I don't think that's happened much since WWII. Falkland Islands War - not a war. Korean War - not a war. Soviet/Afghan War - not a war. 1991 Persion Gulf War - not a war. Vietnam - I'm not sure.
The media and liberal "intellectuals" have blurred the lines between real war and conflicts that are more like an international "street-fight". This is mostly due to the fact that we expect "civilized" nations to abide by the rules of war even when they don't have a true war on their hands. And conservatives have been guilty of accepting this blurring too. Margaret Thatcher referred to the Falklands conflict as a "war". George W Bush calls it the "War on Terror" and refers to himself as a "war-time president". The unfortunate result is that liberals have been allowed to get away with trying to call the prisoners at Guantanamo as "prisoners of war." All of these are incorrect when you look at the true definition of war.
Ignatieff claims to be an expert on all of this. He doesn't act the part. He is obviously just trying to score emotional/political points (as ET pointed out so eloquently) by playing on the ignorance of the average modern citizen.
So, that's what he meant by both sides committing "war crimes" and that's why he's wrong on everything he's had to say on the topic to date - expert that he is supposed to be notwithstanding.
Cheese, please. ...-

Thanks for the rules of war. Also, aren't both sides supposed to be in distinctive uniforms. Watching WW11 movies, and reading said books, I seem to remember that anyone caught out of uniform could be shot as a spy. Trying to paint these terrorists as freedom fighters etc is a bunch of bs. The main problem with the nam war was the US tried to use conventional methods, and could not believe people would walk around with bombs on them, or in baby carriages, and other terrible acts. Same with the afgan and iraq war. We are supposed to be civilized and follow rules of war and the geneva convention, when the other side can't even pronounce it let alone read or understand it, and only the US can be bashed for breaking rules. Now, can you answer another Q for me. What will OBL and the other terrorists do with the country if they win. Would they expect foreign aid from us and Bush to rebuild their country and invest in their economy. Will they demand that all those in TO live in caves. Will they kill all those working at the cbc. Will taliban jack be installed as emperor of Canada.

The two front-runners, Michael Ignatieff and Bob Rae, got into the squabble on Sunday in Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall before about 2,000 party members.
“Early on, you said you would vote against the extension of this mission, now you’re saying something different — that is, we have to prevail and sustain (Canada’s commitment),” Ignatieff told Rae.
“I actually don’t know where you stand on this issue.”
“You certainly do know,” Rae said before adding this riposte: “For a guy that’s changed his mind three times in a week with respect to the Middle East …”
“Absolutely untrue! You know that’s untrue, you’ve known me for 40 years,” Ignatieff told Rae. The two were roommates back in their university years.
national newswatch
Yes, both sides are supposed to wear distinct uniforms. Now, there is a bit of grey area there. I know that "resistance" groups and "militia" operating within an area occupied by the enemy nation has certain exemptions on the "official" uniform requirement as long as they identify themselves in some distinct way (I think). I can't remember the details - and I don't claim to be the expert that the esteemed Tavareesh Ignatieff does. But, suffice it to say that Hezbollah and Al Qaeda don't abide by these rules - whatever they are.
And that's the other problem with all of this mis-use of the word war...it begs the question - how do we get the other side to surrender? Hezbollah was operating within Lebanon - but they are not representative of Lebanon or the Lebanese government. OBL cannot surrender - even if he wanted to. He doesn't have the legitimate national political structure from which to negotiate terms.
Taliban Jack wants "negotiations for a cease-fire" with an entity that is (A) not capable of entering into negotiations with international forces because it doesn't represent a nation and (B) not at war in the proper sense, so a "cease-fire" cannot be established. Think about it...what villages or provinces are considered part of the sovereign nation of Talibanstan to which a cease-fire would apply? What "Talibanese" territory would the NATO forces agree to withdraw from (or stop patrolling) in exchange for what assurances from what government?
Doesn't make sense does it?

The start of the final official debate was briefly sidetracked by a heckler who had to be escorted from the hall.
It's not exactly clear what the man, who used a small megaphone, wanted.
Earlier, as interim leader Bill Graham spoke to the crowd before the forum began, a woman in the audience stood up, wearing a skimpy bikini, and walked around with a sign before sitting down.
One side of the sign read, "Income Trust Bad" and the flip side said, "Don't Forget Small Investors."
The debate among the eight candidates then kicked off with a discussion on women in politics.

Strange, over at CJunk the poll suggests the Canadian ads are winning the race but then again maybe it is patriotism and not objectivity at work. One item worth noting is that the CF ad was an entire military (army, air force, navy) while the rest were strictly grunts.
The first Canuck film showed some actual soldiering but the second one was strictly a Civil Defence type of sell. Both tried to show too much in the time provided. Honestly Mike in TO, I don't think the money was all that well spent.
My humble opinion as always. Glad the Lieberal debate wasn't shown down here ;-)

A late posting related to this weeks earlier discussion on climate change.
To say that climate change is happening is merely banal and to primarially attribute what is observed today to human action is intellectually dishonest. All but the very worst of some models forced projections and conjectures are less than has occured naturally within the recent past. I suggest that anyone do their own research by searching Google or whatever for some simple subjects; to wit:
paleoclimate ice pack arctic ocean
paleoclimate boreal treeline
paleoclimate prairie drought cycle
holocene climate cycle
I suggest that you restrict your browsing to the reputable web-sites of the various university paleoclimate research sites i.e. U of Waterloo or Colorado (very close to NOAA) and not the sites of the proven hysterics of the popular press ( sadly including Nature).

Thought Ken was going to cry. Newman tried to spin that polls show that libs will win next election, so the delegates have a bigger choice to make, they are not voting for a leader, but a PM. Rae bragged he brought down Clark and Harris so he has done something for the liberals. Iggy said they had to work to re-elect Dalton. I found the following revelation a little bit surprising, but it makes sense too:
"A former CSIS agent, who asked not to be named, told The Hill Times that he would not at all be surprised if ministers were kept in the dark because RCMP, CSIS and PCO officials would not have wanted to divulge some secrets to ministers. He said ministers are often told as little as needed to get them through Question Period and media scrums."
