On being thankful

Every now and then it's good to remember all the things I am thankful for, including (but not limited to) a healthy, growing daughter, a great job, a connected family, good friends, crisp autumn mornings, my drooly dog & princess cat & squeaky guinea pig...

and pumpkin pie.

Happy Pumpkin Pie weekend, everybody!

PS: Apparently I'm technically-challenged and need to add some text to this so as to not screwup the layout.

So, let me add that I am also very thankful that no one in my family would ever ask that a family member's ashes be delivered via the mail. That is just weird to me.

I am also thankful that Jack! is not running the country. No particular link, I'm just happy about that.

mmmmmm....pie!!!
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!!

Don't know if its been mentioned yet, but it seems that the American Democrat Party is drafting Canadian Soldiers. A fierce looking soldier is on the front of the DNC website's hit piece on the status of the military. That soldier happens to be a member of the Canadian forces that the DNC yanked out of iStock without checking. More here:

That looks like Mom's pumpkin pie! I am Thankful to be a CANANDIAN! And I want to wish a safe Thanksgiving weekend to all our troup overseas.

That looks like Mom's pumpkin pie. There is so much to be Thankful for: that I am a Canadian, my granddaughter and to thank all of the troups overseas.

Darn, I didn't get the first post corrected, so sorry, spelling....coffee time.

Happy Turkey Day to all, To our fine troops overseas all the best and because I am still serving and has served overseas know how well they will feed you all today, walk away from the dessert table boy, you will just have to run it off tomorrow.

I'm thankful that this thread has not been soiled by trolls....yet.

A big thanks to all our troops serving overseas and at home. Enjoy the meals.

I heard a older woman say that every morning when she wakes up and doesn't see wood, she's thankful.:-)

I thank God every day of my life for something that is as precious to me as a breath of air...I've also taken gratitude walks, and thanked God for everything I see, hear, smell, etc.

Life is good.

Happy Thanksgiving.....each and every day of the rest of your lives.

"CANANDIAN!"
I'm thankful to live in a country where misspelling is not an act of treason.

Was that pie made from organic pumpkin, and is the whipped cream real or that canned stuff?

Now, the turkey, was it killed in a humane manner, or simply had its' head whacked off with a sharp axe?

We do have a lot to be thankful for in Canada, or Cananda, or Cananadanada, all three spellings.

Happily substituting for the trolls, with malice toward no one, Happy Thanksgiving.

dmorris: I suspect the pie I'll be diving into later today will be from a pumpkin vs a canned pumpkin, but truth be told, I'll only be able to tell by the lumps (the canned pumpkin doesn't usually have lumps, but only contains pumpkin & water). As to whether or not it's "organic," well, frankly, Scarlett...

The whipping cream will be real, with a bit of Grand Marnier thrown in for flavour.

Damn. I forgot to buy Mom a free-range turkey this year. They really DO taste better. Oh well. Funny how a dinner I didn't have to prepare always tastes great!

Our household is very gratefull to the troops and their families. I hope today they truly feel it.
p.s. I have to find something new in red. My wardrobe is sadly lacking in that spectrum.

Carrot pie is best. Try it sometime. Substitute mashed carrots for the pumpkin. I like the little leaf though, I'll have to search the kid's room.

There are many things to be thankful for and I am in agreement with many of those already mentioned here.

But most of all, I'm thankful for all the endless hours of amusement provided by Canada's court jester, Jack bin Layton, the biggest ass to ever set foot in Ottawa. Unless of course, schmuck and butt, er budd have been to Ottawa at one time, then he'd be second or third biggest ass.

Let the drooling trolls commence....

BTW; speaking of xpresspost and seeing wood... I got a nice little package from Canada Post Friday; with instructions on sending parcels. Heavy cardboard that looked like it could be made into a box, costly looking advertising for the tax payer. No warnings for shipping family though.
With that in mind: I'm also thankfull for alternatives to Canada Post, e-mail and our new Conservative Government, and their committment to clean up Government.

We don't have pumpkin pie this year. I will be making an apple crisp instead from some of our own apples, the ones that didn't become apple sauce, or are being eaten fresh, or are to be made into apple butter on Monday.

We have five more cobs of Chilliwack corn, the last of the season, smaller, but still wonderful. They are from some organic farmers there who were selling produce at the Maple Ridge farmers market and spotted my Jack Layton button, and we were soon talking about the Fraser Valley's devotion to the political right that, while steadfast, pays remarkably few dividends. And about the need to end a mistaken overseas mission unless the right political terms can be found first.

As well, we will have some squash and chard from our own garden, and the very last of the tomotoes. We plan to invite a lesbian couple we know, something the Small Dead Rhodent crowd wouldn't approve of.

In the final analysis, we are most thankful to live in a country with more or less genuine freedom, most of the time, and to not be bothered on a daily basis by the frantic prejudice of the anti-gay, anti-Muslim, anti-secular, anti-flouridation, anti-science, anti-everything since the Enlightenment crowd who pretend to take pleasure in traditions, when in fact the only thing that really gets their juices flowing is ruining someone else's fun.

I suppose I could re-express that by saying we are glad to be living in a country where Jack Layton is making a bigger and bigger impact as the Conservatives run head first into reality (why on earth were literacy programs cut, and do they not expect a negative reaction to this kind of lunatic fringe budgeteering?) and the Liberals sink deeper and deeper into a curious mixture of ethical lapses and elistist leadership.

Just a quick Happy Thanksgiving to all those north of the 49th and to those who's heart is also north of the 49th.

BTW: They tell me that turkey isn't fattening... until the third helping. ;-)

I give thanks to all our boys and girls who are away from loved ones this Thanksgiving...doing what they do best- representing Canada in this troubled world.

And a special Thanksgiving hello to all my cyber pals here on SDA, with whom i learn much, and have interesting conversations with.. and the others..well..this will be the one time of the year when i can honestly tell you to get stuffed
(and you will!!) with a smile on my face!

Pass the cranberries!

Happy Thanksgiving to my Canadian friends at SDA. Stuff yourselves.

Lest We Forget on this Thanksgiving Day:

Cuts to literacy?

From today's Calgary Sun - Licia Corbella:

"Harper refers to a column written by Winnipeg Sun columnist Tom Brodbeck, that points out the groups that had funding cuts didn't actually help teach people to learn to read, they just do advocacy work. For example, Literacy Partners of Manitoba put out a newsletter but haven't taught even one person how to read.

According to their latest annual report, they had a $353,433 budget last year, in which $134,901 went to salaries and $99,650 on facilities. Just $10,042 was given out in bursaries and the year before that, just $3,793."

On that note Brodbeck's column was published Friday Oct. 6 and is available under his bio at Winnipeg Sun. Incidently his column yesterday was good too. 'Just a pile of scrap' about a Vimy Ridge memorial, in the 'Peg, that is a waste of $70,000 of tax payers dollars. He says City of Winnipeg, but how many simiar projects have the Liberals funded?

I am also thankfull for journalists who give us opposing views. To be fair ; be sure to read Sheila Copps criticizing the cuts. Funny she brings up the GST and taxing women's hygeine products...

For something different? From Savannah's Pirate's House:

Peanut Butter Pie

1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese ( softened )

1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar

1 cup peanut butter ( smooth or chunky- different textures )

1/4 to 1/2 cup condensed ( evaporated ) milk

1 (16 ounce) package frozen whipped topping, thawed ( dream whip, Kool whip )

2 (9 inch) prepared graham cracker crusts

Directions

1 Beat together cream cheese and confectioners' sugar. Mix in peanut butter and milk. Beat until smooth. Fold in dessert topping.

2 Spoon into 2- 9 inch graham cracker pie shells, cover and chill.

backhoe, that sounds awesome.
In fact, I'll be doubling my daily jogging time today to prepare for Peanut Butter Pie tomorrow.

I'm thankful that the Democrats haven't conscripted me, yet. (Run if you see Charlie Rangel coming!)
(Go to LGF, Michelle Malkin et al., including Dust My Broom.)

Probably too late for this year, but pumpkin cheesecake with a gingersnap crust is miles ahead of pumpkin pie and when making cranberry sauce, replace some or all of the water with o.j.

Happy Turkey Day.

Kathryn you're right about cheesecake. The cranberry tip is a new one, sounds great. Also leftover cranberries are great in apple crisp.

Thankfully, we do not have to live this. .

Whenever I saw a beautiful sight or view, my heart painfully contracted sadly on Iraq. We are missing here something called system!

I just wonder how can we continue doing our jobs and go to schools or to work?! A week before, my father came home terrified! He said that some gunmen stop their office bus on the highway that leads to *Albayaa area* in Baghdad. He added and mentioned that those hirelings obliged the driver to pull over and grabbed that poor driver out of the bus and aim their AK47s over his head.

One of them ordered the passengers to show their ID cards! The other gunmen yelled: * Fuck them, let’s move on from here quick!*. They took that poor driver with them and quickly drove their four wheel drive Toyota.

One of the passengers volunteered to drive that bus back home. My dad said that nobody was believing what was going on! Of course, no one heard anything about that unfortunate driver since that afternoon.

It*s familiar situation these days to be murdered according to your fellowship (whether being Sunni or Shiit) by some civil gunmen, all they have to do is to form a fake checkpoint and hunt some innocent people and leave quickly before they got busted by a US army vehicle or a chopper.

This young Iraqi blogger was about to leave Iraq with his family. No posts since September 24th. Hope he left Iraq and not this world. = TG

well, that certainly has all the attributes of a TROLL posting.

I thankful the republicans are losing steam at just the right moment:
(from CTV.ca)
Foley, Iraq contributing to GOP downfall: polls

Fueled by the ongoing scandal surrounding disgraced former Rep. Mark Foley and the Iraq war, new polls show wavering support for U.S. President George Bush and his Republican Party."

see, when a democrat does the libido thing, at least its with another consenting ADULT.

republicans do it with CHILDREN

where is all the cacaphony NOW about 'slick willy and the monika lew show" ?

dead silence follows ......

welcome to SDA, aka as hipocricy central !!!

I win !!!

Just couldn't leave it alone could you robert J aka schmuck. One comment 6 hours ago and you use it as a stepping stone for your vile rant. all I can say it it is a good thing that SDA isn't mine because I'd have your sorry butt banned forever.

Dialogue, discussion, debate.

Penny, Thanks and same to you. That*s not at all like get stuffed. LoL = TG

Saved the pie recipe and have added the appropriate things on the shopping list. I'll have to half it though as there are only two here and my days of effectively jogging off a few calories has passed.

BTW: Never have a jogging/walking route that passes a Dairy Queen!

I wish I could pump the scents in our home to yours. We have a couple more hours before supper ... 3 to indigestion.

Have a great Thanksgiving all.

I want to join Penny in wishing all of our Canadian friends and extended relatives a very happy Thanksgiving, and especially directed to all of our buddies up here on sda.

As for the hyperventilations of t. schmuckJ, my suggestion would simply be to consider the source.

No, my dear Canadian friend, I meant it in the spirit of bon appetit. LOL. After I posted it, I realized it could be read another way. Hey, you Canadians are the best. And a thanks to Kate. Mark Steyn's comment about about her site perked my curiosity. I admit that after 9/11 I drank the Liberal and CBC Kool-aid in that they formed the perception I had of Canada. As a Yank, I had given up on Canada as pathologically anti-American. My apologies.

For the second time, I second Texas Canuck, schmuck is vile and needs to have his troll oxygen shut off.

Just came back from a whirlwind trip from Canadian side of the 49th, to northern BC, down into Alberta to Montana, Idaho, and Washington.

It was a mix of checking in on family and 'prepping' for retirement traveling....have to learn the fine art of actually stopping for reasons other than to fuel up?

And being comfortable with it...lol

But, the reason for posing that revelation is what we found on our journey...the pace, the development, the people, the agriculture and industry, the countryside...oh my gosh, the countryside.

We have so much to be thankful for...up here, and down there.

We are so, so lucky to be able to share it all, so evenly, with one another.

And already feel the tug to expand our range very soon.

I found the agitation of politics actually can be set aside, if only temporarily.

But the pull to check in on the wranglings of Canada and this site, brought me to the laptop every night, no matter the hour.

I think I reset the radio talk show spots about every hour, or after every new mountain range.

May I pass along my Happy Thanksgiving wishes to you all at this time.

And may I thank not only those I agree with for their expressions here, but also those, who stir my battle urgings, as they are often the ones who challenge me as to why I get to the conclusions I do.

Happy Thanksgiving to my norhtern neighbors. Enjoy your feast and never forget who you are thanking.

(Meanwhile south of the border, we'll be honoring an Italian working for the Spanish and wasn't very good at calculating distances.)

More to be thankful for.

North Korea declares the first ever Nuclear Test by North Korea. [ CBC radio one ]

The good part? Nothing detected by sensors and siesmic stations.

No detection of radio active fall- out.

A quiet low key and polite test, if in fact there really was one.

May North Korea*s and Kim Jong*s faces be saved so all can ease off the alert. = TG

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone who lends their voices (figuratively, of course) to SDA in the defense of god, country, family and individuals! Thank you Kate (and your guest hosts) for the excellent continued efforts in providing a first class arena for common-folks to become much more well informed then we ever could from Canadian MSM.

Great pic of the world's best pie, pumpkin! Looks like it needs more whipped cream, mind you.

I screwed up the first post, this one I won't. God help us.....

No reason to worry Mary, he always has and often just in time. Consider Harper and the timing thereof. = TG

God bless everyone at SDA. Thanks to Kate for being here for us and the fine forum she and her guests have provided for our edification and as an outlet for our news and views. The freedom to think independently has been hard won. So, as so many others have said here, I thank God for our brave troops, protecting our freedoms at great cost.

Our multi-generational family and guests--from 80 to 12--totalling 20, had a fine feast last night. It's easy to take our blessings for granted. Let's all count them and be thankful!

A big tip of the hat to our American brothers and sisters too: It's great to have so many of you on board at SDA. Bless you all!

I thank God for GWB--f course, he's not perfect: he's a politician, for Pete's sake!--and our own Stephen Harper, two men not willing to crumple and appease, like most of their opponents. So, I'm also thankful for true leaders: The conformist societies, which the secular West is very good at spawning, are not very good at creating leaders. So, let's be grateful for the few who stand out from the crowd and give them the support they deserve.

Happy Thanksgiving SDA.

Here is the Dinosaur Good Eatin' Prayer from the Dinosaur Bar B Que.

Get down on your knees
And put up your paws-
Thank the Good Lord
For the use of your jaws.

concrete, amen to that! ;-)

Why I'm Grateful for Belinda Stronach

This Thanksgiving, I am grateful for my daughter and my family, I am grateful I am able to study in one of the best political science programs in then country at Carleton University, I am grateful to be able to live in a country that promotes peace and democratic values, I am grateful that we have a Conservative government, and finally, I am grateful for Belinda Stronach.
...

And I'm the most grateful to you Belinda:

For defecting to a political party who is no longer in power and leaving an opening for a future female with genuine Conservative values to step up to the plate...-

http://theblondeconservative.blogspot.com/2006/10/why-im-grateful-for-belinda-stronach.html

Happy Thanksgiving to all of my confreres et consoeurs at SDA, for standing in the gap as Canada goes through a most necessary but difficult transition from quasi-Banana Republic to a responsible, accountable, and participatory democracy!

God bless Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his excellent government members, God bless our troops who are putting their lives on the line for a more hopeful future for the Afghanistan people and the rest of the world, and God bless each individual in Canada who is returning Canada to the values once held dear in our country: our Judeo-Christian faith on which Canada's political, judicial, and academic foundations are founded, two-parent, mom/dad families which have, for millennia, formed the foundations for healthy children and societies, and honest government, whose members are servants of the people, not tyrranical and selfish overseers.

May God bless our country!

One thing about Jack. He'd jail the crooks.

Quote the bible. You're good at that. Just remember every freedom you have that helps the people was founded by the CCF/NDP. Medicare,Canada Pension,EIC,Wheat Board,WCB,womans rights, bill of rights, paid vacation,Stat holidays, unions,Farm protection against banks(Look it up),company pensions. Now you tell what the hell has any Tory gov't done that Canadians should be proud of? You can't name a damn thing. All you have to say is "get rid of those left wingers". You are sooooooo full of crap. You are Facists and don't even know it.
