The Corner has been compiling the reaction. Glenn Reynolds; "Kerry's suggestion that the troops in Iraq are dumb failures is not only reprehensible, but false on the facts."

Allegations by The Swift Boat Veterans For The Truth that Kerry's Vietnam purple hearts were self-inflicted become more believable all the time.

Wow Kate you are really into the nonsensical charectar assasination arent you? Shouldnt you be picking on Michael J Fox?
Yes, I can see how some might equate John Kerry with the disabled....

American Legion to Sen. Kerry: Apologize Now

American Legion to Sen. Kerry: Apologize Now both of the American Legion INDIANAPOLIS, Oct. 31 /U.S. Newswire/ --
The National Commander of The American Legion called on Sen. John Kerry to apologize for suggesting that American troops in Iraq are uneducated. "As a constituent of Senator Kerry's I am disappointed. As leader of The American Legion, I am outraged," said National Commander Paul A. Morin. "A generation ago, Sen. Kerry slandered his comrades in Vietnam by saying that they were rapists...-

Two quotes I ran across:
"I was waiting for the inevitable poll-killing bombshell from Kerry. The man just keeps on giving. Mehlman should send him a bottle of Chevas."
"This clip, with a couple of Dean's remarks along with Pelosi saying we don't need a missile defense shield would make a great ad."
Kerry, like Ignatieff, chooses fiction rather than facts. He chooses to wallow in the emotional domains rather than reason.
Kerry is focusing on the American concern about the war in Iraq; and his choice is to portray Iraq as a morass caused by Bush, ignoring that it is really a struggle of a population moving out of tribalism into democracy - with a slew of nations around it trying to prevent the Iraqi movement to democracy. So, he denigrates the military who are there, so that he can denigrate Bush.
But what an insult - to serve in the military (in Iraq) means that you are dumb.
His excuse? The usual tactic of 'blame the audience'. They didn't understand, says Kerry, that it was a joke meant to target Bush. Huh? How?
Then, his next tactic, as the heat rises from angry Americans, is to clothe himself, as usual, in his dusty Vietnam uniform, claiming that he, a veteran, would never, ever, insult the military.
But wait - isn't that precisely what he did, when he called the Viet soldiers 'rapists and murderers'? Didn't he already insult the military in his Vietnam days?
Didn't he insult the military with his tall tales of his own 'heroism', all debunked by the Swift Boat Veterans?
notice the resemblance to iggy.
I think it's time to peel away a few more layers of the teflon that conservatives are so fond of to coat themselves with.
Go back and read the transcript of Kerry's remark. I have, and it seems odd that it is not included in Kate's topic post, rather a big stretch is made.
If you expect people to cut some slack for MacKay (the 2nd most important elected official in this country) then you must do the same for Kerry (a long shot for the presidency).
How about that reverse slap down Wolf Blitzer gave uber-bitch Lynne Cheney.
mary T: make that iggy and his horse. Kerry is a unique exception to that expression "he's the south end of a north bound horse"....he's both ends.
He's a shameless gigolo living off the Ketchup Queen's trust fund. It's a good thing they aren't ordinary folks, he'd be dead by now lighting the grill with all of that hairspray.
Reminder to self: don't light a cigarette around Kerry.
Also both Ignatieff and Kerry look a lot like Wiley Coyote (jumping off a cliff to catch the roadrunner only to discover there is a big hole in his parachute. So he hauls out the HELP sign just before the inevitable crash and burn). /sarc
Like another post said, Kerrys brain is on vacation again and his mouth is working overtime.
John Kerry is stupid blabbering member of the brainless jackass party why dont this walnut brained idiot stop trying to prove he is stupid
Contemptible remarks from a contemptible man. Rumour has it, in anticipation of running for Pres. again in 2008, he's already written most of his concession speech.
Seems to me he'd be well-advised to pay more attention to his wife, otherwise he'll be forced to start looking for a new condiment...
What's worse?
A) Kerry suggesting that if a higher education is not in the cards then serving in Iraq is the alternative.
B) Foley enticing under age pages into sexual fantasies lustily starring at their crotches then blaming the RC Church while Hastert backs him up.
All I can say is....
KARL ROVE---YOU MAGNIFICENT BASTARD!
What's worse?
A) A candidate for Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces suggesting that the armed forces are full of loser morons? Or
B) A homosexual having risque communications with pretty "of age" (I understood they were over 16) boys.
Isn't it normal (and to be celebrated, right all you liberal left-wing nut jobs?) for a homosexual to be attracted to young men? There was no physical contact, as I understand it...unlike previous Democrat dalliances.
Yes, you'll recall that all the senior US officers in Iraq only have a Grade Six Edjookayshun...
Actually David, I think that they are BOTH contemptible hyprocrites. I have no sympathy for Foley because he happens to be on the conservative side of the spectrum.
Hassle,
It's obvious you have minimal knowledge of US politics.
Go back to playing socialist Kanuckistan dictator. That's the only game you know.

Bush to respond to Kerry at 5PM EST(per FNC)

Bush to respond to Kerry @5PM EST.
dean juke,
My wife is her own person and is smart enough to realize that Foley is a pervert and Hastert is his accomplice.
Republican conservatives are so so desperate for some good news and to deflect their own mis-steps that they'll attempt to blow the smallest scrap into a major issue.
My biggest criticism of conservatives is that they place themselves on such a shiny pedestal but as soon as the going gets tough they make a hasty retreat hoping nobody notices. Then they call it having a backbone...yeah right, a backbone that belongs in chicken soup.
david brown - we have read the transcript of Kerry's speech. He did not say what you interpret he said;namely,
"Kerry suggesting that if a higher education is not in the cards then serving in Iraq is the alternative."
Kerry didn't set up such an If/Then scenario. He said "make an effort to be smart, you can do well, if you don't, you get stuck in Iraq".
That statement is most definitely NOT setting up a scenario that you can either go get a higher education or you can go to Iraq, with both being equally acceptable, both being equally admirable, both being equally valid.
He didn't say this - and for you to assert that he did, is reprehensible.
He was very clear; he said, speaking to students who are ALREADY getting a higher education, that they must 'be smart, study hard, do well in school' OR ELSE, if they don't, they'll get stuck in Iraq.
In other words - fail school and you are in Iraq.
In other words, the military in Iraq are educational failures.
That's what he said. Why did you rewrite what he said?

The clip ends rather abruptly. Are the next few sentences not relevant or is this another attempt at character assasination via sound bite.
Here's a link to a story from the Associated Press:
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/news/archive/2006/10/31/national/w094731S95.DTL
A quote from the fifth paragraph:
"these despicable Republican attacks that always seem to come from those who never can be found to serve in war, but love to attack those who did."
And from the fifteenth:
'A potential rival to Kerry in 2008 — Republican Sen. John McCain — said in a statement that Kerry "owes an apology to the many thousands of Americans serving in Iraq, who answered their country's call because they are patriots and not because of any deficiencies in their education."'
What was that again about those who can't be found to serve?
And, not that the AP would ever slant its coverage, but here's the AP's own language from the sixteenth paragraph:
Like Kerry, McCain is a decorated Vietnam veteran.
And unlike Kerry, John McCain served more than four months and twelve days in Vietnam, and none of his decorations is for a self-inflicted wound. Unlike Kerry, John McCain has, I believe, released all of his military service records to the public.
First let me say that I wouldn't give John Kerry the time of day, being that I'm genetically programed to be a rightwhing ranter... but I'd really like to know what Kerry said just prior to the killer quote. The quote, taken as it is, is indefensible... yet, we have no context. If he was talking about the Bush administration not studying and doing their homework so they got stuck in Iraq... then this frenzy is a cheap shot taking the man's words completely out of context.
If the quote is taken completely out of context, then it's just another dirty political trick.
All should NOT be fair in love and politics.
As far as Kerry suggesting that those who haven't served don't have the right to an opinion... he just sunk most politicians... what a boob.
Liberal-left politicians are as dangerous to the Free World as the actual enemy! How? They side with the enemy, give comfort to them... and demand we sit down and talk with them, rather than fight them, no matter how hellbent, no matter how far gone and purely evil they may be. Think Neville sitting down for a lovely cuppa tea with Adolf...
I believe that a post I just finished about a very similar lib-left politician, John Kerry's Canadian counterpart, Jack Layton, may be helpful as an addition to the evidence offered in this post.
If you don't like hard-hitting political commentary taking liberal-leftists to task in the most blunt way possible, then you won't want to read what I say in this post:
Myopic, Ideologically Rigid Layton Urged To Open Mind on Afghanistan Liberation
http://tinyurl.com/ydjzxt
I haven't been able to find anything that gives better context to the Kerry quote... perhaps inadvertently... but he definitely was taking a shot at the dummies who tend to go into the forces... I'll remember to pass this on to my honors student son whose currently in the Canadian Forces. He needs to know that he is just to dumb to do anything else... except serve in the forces.
Jose, you're concerned the clip ends abruptly? You think John Kerry had more to say that would clarify his position? But it was cut off, therefore a character assinsination? Well Jose, there was laughter. That's right, the John Kerry supporters laughed. And his reaction to their laughter? A smug smile and a nod of approval to their reaction. Quite relevant indeed!
well I dont see how a bunch of Ds and such in the permanent academic record translates into a propensity to self inflict war wounds.
then again some real weird shyt went down in southeast asia in the 60s and 70s
I know that Kerry didn't mean to say uneducated people end up stuck in Iraq. He was taking a shot at Bush. It just doesn't make sense because Bush has about the same education as Kerry, who himself voted for the war. He did put his foot in his mouth. This is what happens when off the cuff comments get hoots and laughter from your inner circle, then fly like a rock when used with the public. He put it out there, now he must explain himself; welcome to spin politics. He just threw a pitch into the GOP/Rove spin wheelhouse, and they will try to hit it out of the park. I don't think they will succeed though. Perhaps that comment, if spun right by Rove and crew, will cost Democrats control of the House. In the US, it is a mortal sin to criticize the troops. We will see.
Shamrock, you and mr brown can get a job over at the Democratic Spin Office. I don't know if they reward with senate seats like the Lieberals do but you can ask.
I've seen the speach Kerry made and the idiot isn't smart enough to make a joke. He said what he said and there is no room for interperetation. This isn't a dog joke that only lieberals heard.
Doug: Thanks for YOUR insightful commentary on US politics at 4:24 pm. You are obviously so-o-o-o-o much more knowledgable than I! Moron.
It is possible that Kerry slipped up and left out those two important words...but most likely not. Bush has an education at least comparable to his own, so it is unlikely his excuse after the fact was truthful...likely just damage control. How could he possibly promote himself as Commander-in-Chief after smeering his troops?
Kerry: Verb-atim.

“If anyone thinks a veteran would criticize the more than 140,000 heroes serving in Iraq and not the president who got us stuck there, they’re crazy. This is the classic G.O.P. playbook. I’m sick and tired of these despicable Republican attacks that always seem to come from those who never can be found to serve in war, but love to attack those who did.
I’m not going to be lectured by a stuffed suit White House mouthpiece standing behind a podium, or doughy Rush Limbaugh, who no doubt today will take a break from belittling Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s disease to start lying about me just as they have lied about Iraq. It disgusts me that these Republican hacks, who have never worn the uniform of our country lie and distort so blatantly and carelessly about those who have.
(LGF)
Perhaps poor Mr. Kerry is simply out of touch or has early onset senility. I do recall that many years ago in the U.S. when there was conscription, the men with important jobs (and education), would get "a pass" on out of country service because their function at home was deemed to be too important to the U.S.A. This, of course, made the poorly educated susceptible to the draft and foreign deployment. But the U.S. no longer has the draft---perhaps he has simply forgotten. Unless Mr. Kerry is actually considering re-instating the draft should he become the president and use Iraq as motivation to get educated! Probably his version of trick or treat!!!
I'm getting dizzy watching the DhimmicRats spinning like turbocharged tops... keep falling down... like they're going to be in terms of voter support!
Thank goodness Kerry couldn't control his moonbattery- that's a hard thing to hold in when one is so incredibly full of it.
Now he's calling the whole thing a "joke"?
John Kerry is a joke.
I had a look at the report on Kerry's marks and those of George Bush. Overall the marks look about the same. But Kerry's best were in bird courses such as political science and French. Bush's were in history and philosophy - EXACTLY what he would need when President to assess the threat posed by Islamofascism.
I do wish people would stop underestimating George W. He is well educated, knows something of the Middle East (WAY more than most North Americans), partly no doubt through study but partly through contact with the Saudis, and he thinks on a 10 to 15 year time scale. The people who think he is dumb and ignorant are of that opinion because they cannot recognise intelligence and practical knowledge of the world when they see it.
KC, don't you have Kate confused with Kerry - Kerry is the one assasinating the character of the brave men and women serving in Iraq. What a bozo!

Well, all I can say is John Kerry's just a washed-out dish rag... may as well just let this one go past, in my opinion.
I DID like that picture of him in the "Flashback" link above, though; made me think of Lurch from The Addams Family, but Lurch's hair was combed.
"Kerry opened his speech at Pasadena City College with several one-liners, saying at one point that Bush had lived in Texas but now "lives in a state of denial."
He then said: "You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."
That, Kerry said, was meant as a reference to Bush, not troops."
You can see what he was trying to get at. Of course, the way it's said makes its easy to misundercomprehend him.
Ted.
The Kerry statement is indefensible.
John Kerry's defense of course is that he was actually refering to Bush's questionable education/intelligence, and how he got "the country" stuck in Iraq. However, had he been refering to Bush he should have actually included his name in the joke. But he didn't, he paused, thought about what he was going to say and went forward. Had he been trying to get a jab in on Bush he should have clarified his statement after making it, especially after the way it came out. Instead he moved on.
If you've seen the tape you will probably find Kerry's explaination pretty lame.
The Foley scandal has generated over 150 and counting MSM stories since it broke. Let's see what kind of legs the media gives this story till election day. My bet, is that it will fall very short of the Foley scandal.
Trolls, you can read anything you want into what you Think Kerry meant to say but the bottom line is "stupid is as stupid does"
Kerry has a long history of loathing the military, any doubts review his testimony to the U.S. Senate in the early '70's, or read his book The Winter Soldier.
This is just another case of Kerry's alligator mouth overloading his hummingbird @$$, then blaming it on "the audience"...well Mr. Gravy Trainer - I'm in the US Navy (serving for over 24 years now) and have two degrees, so what's wrong with the picture (in your mind).
I guess that there wasn't a Navy Chief available to provide JFK with some "bulkhead counseling" when he started sniveling about being in the Navy...
So outrageously single-minded are you guys, that you refuse to accept the notion that this boob screwed up his line. Ah well... this is the result of mixing desperation with stupidity.
Even if Kerry actually did say this... so what? Should this make people ignore either the lies/incompetance of the Bush admin starting a war that has rippped two nations apart?
Does it equate with actually making the world a more dangerous place for Americans, by creating more terrorists, and terrorist sympathizers?
Does it equate with turning a budget surplus into a massive deficit that is currently the only reason why the economy appears to be "booming"?
If you think so... you're probably one of those folks who think dinosaurs and caveman lived at the same time, and gay can be cured.
Texas,
Has anyone asked the troops in Iraq if they were offended? ....no I didn't think so.
Kerry is guilty and Bush is a shameless ass.
Do you really think that the brave battle-hardened men and women serving in Iraq give a rats ass what 2 childish politicians say or think. One of them a draft dodger and the other the faux-veteran Ketchup King of Massachuetes.
It's plain disgusting that both these a-holes are playing politics with people that risk life and limb just so they can have the correct camera angle during their speeches while kissing babies!
Methinks he was for the joke before he was against it.
"Does it equate with actually making the world a more dangerous place for Americans, by creating more terrorists and terrorist sympathizers?"
So what's your solution idiot? In your world, did the current war in Iraq create the terrorists who caused 911? How about the fifteen hundred years of Islamic terrorism prior to that?
And if you had even a cursory knowledge of Islam you'll find that Islamists don't need excuses to become terrorists, all they need is the Quran and Mohammad's exemplary life example.
"I've been made victorious with terror." - Mohammad, Bukhari
Anyone who believes that "dinosaurs and cavemen" lived at the same time obviously has a higher IQ than the one you unfortunately have. Poor bastard.
from www.cnn.com
"Sen. John Kerry is heading back to Washington and away from tight congressional races after igniting a firestorm of GOP criticism with a "botched joke" about bad students getting stuck in Iraq. He canceled plans to campaign for fellow Democrats Wednesday and one party official said: "I would be surprised if you see him welcomed out there anywhere and certainly not in a race that is meaningful."
