HALF a billion dollars spent buying back hundreds of thousands of guns after the Port Arthur massacre had no effect on the homicide rate, says a study published in an influential British journal. The report by two Australian academics, published in the British Journal of Criminology, said statistics gathered in the decade since Port Arthur showed gun deaths had been declining well before 1996 and the buyback of more than 600,000 mainly semi-automatic rifles and pump-action shotguns had made no difference in the rate of decline.
[...]
Politicians had assumed tighter gun laws would cut off the supply of guns to would-be criminals and that homicide rates would fall as a result, the study said. But more than 90 per cent of firearms used to commit homicide were not registered, their users were not licensed and they had been unaffected by the firearms agreement.
It made no difference for the same reason as establishing the gun registry in Canada has made no difference - it's already illegal to shoot people.
Despite laws banning the practice, the problem of people shooting people (along with the closely related "kniving people" and "bludgeoning people") persists. Faced with that difficult reality, gun control advocates turn to delusion as a solution - arguing that laws against owning murder weapons will succeed where laws against commiting murder have failed.
The director of the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics, Dr Don Weatherburn, has advice for such people.
He said it showed "politicians would be well advised to claim success of their policies after they were evaluated, not before".

our most recent murdering maniac in Montreal who legally owned and registered his guns proves this.
Reminds me of illegal drugs: sure, they're illegal, but people get them, traffick them and use them all over the place all the time.
Lots of things are illegal, but that doesn't stop people from breaking the law.
Why would the situation with guns be any different? Baddies will get guns the same way they'd get some dope. And they'll use them as if they weren't illegal.
So... what to do?
Only way to make any difference would be to throw those who use illegal guns in committing offences in jail for a long time. But of course liberals would argue that it somehow violates peoples' civil/human rights to be punished in any way, shape or form for wrongdoing.
The problem is actually liberals, therefore. They're solution-opposed and would rather place blind faith in that which the reasonable person knows won't work in the real world.
Violent people should be incarcerated more frequently, and for longer periods of time, and reformed. Then there may be a difference. Reasonable people know this... but liberals aren't reasonable people!
half a billion? cheap by our registry standards. If we had bought back a half a billion dollars worth of guns we could have given some to our army.
Right now there is a gun anmisty for the month of october in Alberta. I live in Calgary if I had guns to turn in I would get in line right BEHIND the Asian ,Jamacian, and biker gangs.
no thx for the free weapons....the army has enuf librano legacy crap....as to incarceration....speaking of librano legacy crap...they would not increase jail terms as it would then apply to all of their gangsta money laundering buddies....GO ARMY
So much for GUN CONTROL hey i thought that when they banned all the guns it would be peaceful and safe after all isnt that what the Million Mom March promised isnt that what BILL CLINTON and RED TED KENNEDY said would happen if we banned guns hey if gun control worked New York,Washington D.C. London,Sydne, and others with strict gun ban would be safe you could walk down the street without having to worry about being robbed, raped, mugged mudered or asualted. This just proves the adage WHEN YOU OUTLAW GUNS ONLY OUTLAWS WILL HAVE GUNS
No no no! "We" should all help get all the guns off the street, so that only the military and the government have guns. Government. Stephen Harper's government. Then, once elections are cancelled and Liberals are outlawed, they can GIVE guns away to anyone who wants one! YIPPEE!!
The Liberal registry makes more sense.
Liberals should turn themselves in to the authorities, leaving more intelligent people to create the laws and policies. And as a result I'm quite sure the violent crime issue would be successfully dealt with.
Over the years I've come to the conclusion that gun control is not about stopping crime. Its about fear.
Specifically, people of a socialist bent cannot stand the idea of an armed citizen. It scares the bejeebers out of them.
I mean, criminals as we know are just misunderstood unfortunates, driven to crime by poverty and The Man. Lefties aren't afraid of them, they can be controlled with welfare payments and loving social programs.
But an armed citizen? You can't control somebody like that, which makes them a target for Leftie types. The nail which sticks up must be pounded down!
Half a billion bucks spent pandering to this mentality is a cheap way for the Ozzy socialist types to stay in power. Control the scary gun people, pound them down and make them safe for the nice people to be around. Pull their teeth, basically.
Our beloved Liberals made the mistake of over spending. If they'd kept it under a billion nobody would have complained. The Conservatives appear to be on this path. Same idiot conversation, just cheaper. Gotta pander to the freedom hating, intolerant Toronto/Montreal/Vancouver 'fraidy cat Left if you want to rule in Canada.
CBCpravda happy again today,
The first person in Canada charged under the federal Anti-terrorism Act won a legal victory on Tuesday when an Ontario judge struck down a provision that defines terrorism because he says it violates charter rights.
Justice Douglas Rutherford of Ontario Superior Court ruled that a section of the Anti-terrorism Act that defines "terrorism" violates the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The ruling is good news for Mohammed Momin Khawaja, but it does not mean he will be freed
And here in Canada, newspapers manufacture poll results to influence the population to waste more money on gun control justified with bogus polling techniques. Today, the Canadian Sport Shooting Association released this:

VAUGHAN, ONTARIO
Anti-Gun Bias Negates Montreal Gazette Ipsos-Reid Poll
"The Montreal Gazette, in an obvious attempt to profit from the gun control controversy, used blatantly biased questioning in their recent Ipsos Reid poll. The questions, submitted with no input or consultation with Ipsos Reid, were worded in such a way as to take advantage of the general public's lack of knowledge on firearms technical details" said Tony Bernardo, Executive Director of the Canadian Institute for Legislative Action.
John Wright, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs for Ipsos Reid stated, "All I can say is that this is the first time I can recall doing a poll like we did: The Montreal Gazette asked the polling firm Leger to poll Quebec on the topic...they wrote the questions and did the poll and then we received the exact translations from our client, CanWest, who asked to run them, as is, in the rest of Canada. So, we had no involvement and influence on them except the data collection itself and a corresponding write up."
Mr. Bernardo went on to say, "The poll suggests that the vast majority of those in Quebec and a lesser majority in the rest of the country, want all semi-auto firearms banned. However, the questions used to come to that conclusion were misleading, contained false information and were obviously designed to produce pre-calculated responses."
"As an example of the misleading information contained in the poll questions, the first question states, 'it (semi-automatic firearms) is a restricted weapon in Canada, meaning it can be obtained only for target practice...' This statement overlooks the fact that over 75% of semi auto (or self-loading) firearms are non-restricted and are commonly used for hunting. The wording of the preamble also suggests that semi-auto firearms are, in fact, fully automatic in function; again, false and misleading."
"This type of sensational journalism contributes nothing to an already emotion filled debate and only serves to mislead and confuse the issue. It is biased and irresponsible journalism at its worst and far below the standards Canadians expect from respectable media outlets like the Montreal Gazette."
"These false and misleading statements call the results and integrity of the entire survey and Gazette article into question."
