Well, I don't know about you but I'll be damned if I'll leave it up to a Marxist union deciding what constitutes "hate" material. All the posties who took part in this action should be summarily dismissed. It is interesting, is it not, that the left wing will scream bloody murder if a pharmacist refuses to give out any kind of abortion drugs because it is (according to the left) "their job to not be judgemental about such things" Or is a cop refuses to guard an abortion clinic....it is "their duty to not me judgemental about such things"....but in this case, well, that's different. What absolute nonsense. Such is the tolerant world of the radical left.

Don't forget, if your steps are too high or too steep, or there is a dog (not belinda) they are afraid of they wont deliver. Time to scrap the postal union and all public service unions. Let those workers go out and work in the real world. Hope they all get a huge pay deduction. Are these the idiots that support talibanjack.

many moons ago a buddy of mine did some temp work at a mail delivery depot. this was before it all got unionized.

the postie boys would all take turns flipping thru the playboy magazines whenever they showed up in their bags of mail. they had no qualms about not censoring that.

Self appointed censors is what they are.....

To be realistic, the mailers should have been 3 way folded with sensitive concepts on the inside and sealed with tabs or a sticky edge.

In Canada, printing companies refusing to produce literature promoting the gay lifestyle will be hauled into one of the many kangaroo courts of our human rights commissions and forced to repent and/or pay huge fines. However, when unionized workers refuse to distribute literature critical of the gay lifestye, nothing happens to them. Go figure.

Isn't having a postal worker who will not deliver mail the same as having a firefighter that will not fight fires, or a cop that will not police, or a soldier who will not fight?

Newsflash Ibernia, Canada post has said that carriers will not be disciplined for not delivering the mail in question.

"Canada Post decided not to pursue any disciplinary action against the workers, who refused to deliver the approximately 200 unsealed booklets."

I could well imagine what would happen if some posties started refusing to deliver hard-core porn. We would be swamped with platitudes about free speech, freedom of thought and freedom of expression so fast that it would make the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms burst into flames.

Therein lies the rub, to quote Shakespeare. Who decides what is "hate speech" and what is merely blunt, acerbic criticism? Who decides what may be said or printed and what may not?

I am personally convinced that ALL "hate speech" laws are completely incompatible with Democracy. The answer to what may be considered an obnoxious idea, "hate speech", is a better idea. As the celebrated US Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis wrote in a Freedom of Speech case many decades ago, "Sunlight is the best disinfectant" to obnoxious speech or writings.

That "sunlight" is also known as the Democratic Free Marketplace of Ideas.

A further quote, this from Thomas Jefferson in a 1816 Freedom of Religion case that is no less timelessly pertinent to Freedom of Speech:

Now...from the first sentence remove 'offence against religion' and insert 'hate speech'. In the next sentence, after 'sale of a book' add 'or speech or letter to the editor'. With the addition of a few other words that I'm sure will readily come to mind of Kate and my fellow SDA readers/commentors, the exact parallel of religious censorship to "hate speech" law as undemocratic censorship is clear.

Don't forget the Custom Officers who wont stay on the job if they are scared. Time for Harper to pull a Regan, re the air traffic controllers. I knew Canada was becoming a country of sissies, but this is too much. Decertify the public service unions, and let real people take those jobs. Would any votes be lost, no. They vote talibanjack anyway. Would votes be gained, yes, from all those who have been intimidated by these unions. Would money be saved, yes, millions. The only ones losing money would be the lawyers and sp interest groups with nothing to do but harass cdns.

Under the Cancon empire, hatemail by the Libs gets amplified and delivered. Attempts to defend oneself from Cancon hatemail do not get delivered.

Why blame the Posties? Point out that they're just doing what the Teleban having being doing for years. Good on the posties! At least they do it and get caught.

Posties vow not to deliver anti-gay mail

The censorship of mail is a controversial subject, but so is the dissemination of homophobic literature. Postal workers do not wish to be censors, but they should not be exposed to homophobic material. The unaddressed pamphlets that gave rise to last Thursday's dispute were not contained in envelopes and arrived as a bulk mailing. Simply on its face, the pamphlet stood out from the other types of flyers that are received on a daily basis. According to Canada Post's own human rights policy, employees are entitled to a work environment free from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Therefore, by Canada Post's own definition, employees should not have been exposed to this type of literature.

As the front line of Canada Post, our members are opposed to delivering literature of this nature. While that stance is now the subject of an ongoing debate, the attention may lead to a much needed review of Canada Post's delivery policies.
