On the heels of yesterday's post of my video interview with Preston Manning, today's offering is a video interview with Ted Morton, perhaps the next Premier of Alberta.

Did not listen to the video but agree with almost everything he has ever said. Just one problem, he's an academic. Scares the shit out of me, can articulate everything supremely but usually that type couldn't find their own ass with both hands behind their back. A total disconnect between thought and application. Iggy!? tredeau! How do you spell that last -----“s name.
Unfortunately for Morton the media's already written him off, they usually list the candidates for party leadership leaving his name out. Journalists do not want Morton to win.
Morton he has a lot of great ideas and is a bit of an outsider. Ideas to diversify Alberta's economy are in hot demand. I don't think we will see a lot of creative ideas form the Dinnings and the Hancocks of the world.
Moreover, Morton will be assertive with Ottawa. Albertans should not be lulled to sleep because Harper occupies the PMO. Things can change very fast. A year from now an agressively left leaning Lib or even Lib/Dipper gov't could be in power. Trainloads of cash (in addition to the usual 14B equalization) could be heading east to be lavished on Lib ridings. Layoffs and foreclosures could be the order of the day across the west.
May no mistake. They would LOVE to stick it to us again. The only thing that has prevented them is that they are frightened of the potential reaction. Having a dopey pseudo-con like Dave Hancock in the premier's office will only encourage them.
Well, I was at a federal political function a few weeks ago, and not ONE person there wanted Dinning, I couldn't believe the "anyone but Dinning" statements.
I look at who will be a strong leader for Alberta, and that's Dr. Morton, I have my newly minted membership, and that's my vote! I only joined the party to be able to vote this time!
The first time I heard Dinning guess what the first words out of his mouth were? The Enviroooooment. This guy is going to f***up alberta. I smell a lefty
rat here. He's been out of the loop for so long he might as well be named Micheal Ignadia. Reminds me of PMPM, where's my coronation robe. If you love Alberta vote for Dr. Morton. Personally I want a leader not a politian.
Even in Conservative Alberta, Ted Morton is considered too right wing by many. I know of many who voted Progressive Conservative last election and wouldn't if he were leader. While he may pick up some Alberta Alliance votes, he will scare off many of the moderates in the Alberta PCs, especially in Edmonton and Calgary. I think Jim Dinning is the best choice, although Dave Hancock or Mark Norris would be fine.
Miles, I think that Atilla the Hun could become the premier of Alberta if he won the PC leadership. That is the only real political race in Alberta. Most Albertans would not be caught dead voting Liberal, and certainly not NDP. Morton has some strength because he does not have to sway the majority of Albertans, only the majority of PC membership, and there are a LOT of social conservatives out there who want him, because he has shown that he is prepared to carry the social conservative agenda. They are all lining up to buy memberships.
Speaking as a real Reform type right winger, I don't find Dr. Morton terribly far to the right. Hell, he even wants to subsidize a money-and- energy-eating ethanol industry, which should endear him both to farmers and to greenies.
Notwithstanding the above, I just joined the provincial PCs so that I could vote for him. Dinning is nothing but a political opportunist (i.e. a Liberal) like Ralphie, but without Ralphie's political smarts and entertainment value.
If I still lived in Alta. I would be voting for Dr. Morton. IMO, he is a good man with a fine mind.
I think Ed Stelmach may be the dark horse in this race.
Ted has the best vison for Alberta of any of the Candidates...he thinks in decades in his planning where the others are stuck in the short term political expediency that dictates tinking in flashy substanceless 4 year bites...get elected forst then figure it out.
Without Morton's vision for long term economic and jurisdictional security, Alberta will follow the path chosen for it by superficial short tem thinkers...that will kep it vulnerable to jurisdictional and fiscal raids by Ottawa and negatively impact it in the long run.
Let's hope Ted gets in or has influence on long term planning....otherwise Alberta will remain a boom town where you go to work and then leave when there is a down turn....another transient western province teetering on the brink of reliance on Ottawa welfare and all the disempowerment that entails.
Hope to see you in Brooks this fall for another pheasant festival Ted...you're a hell of a wing shot!
In all honesty I have pretty much wrote of the provincial PCs, however I think the problems go deeper than just the leadership. If Morton manages to capture the leadership then I may reconsider things as it could be a sign that things are not as bad (i.e., red :) ) as they appear.
The likely scenario is I will start supporting the Alberta Alliance.
Ty Lund, the MLA from this constitutency, dislikes Ted Morton, says he is too far right and scary. Another reason to vote for TED MORTON, he has my support. Ty Lund need to move on, he has become a deadhead, in Edmonton, and ia scary because he does nothing.
So far Ted Morton seems to be the best choice for Alberta. I agree that Ralphie boy was nothing but a Liberal and I'd love to see Alberta move a little more (or a lot) to the right.
If Harper is able to hold on to Ottawa then Morton would be a bonus for Alberta. If Harper should happen to lose Canada though then Alberta would be screwed if we were stuck with another Klein.
I just read in the paper that Alberta unions are buying PC memberships for union members so that they can pick the next PC leader. I would encourage anyone that wants to keep Alberta the last bastion of independence and free thinking libertarianism to go and pick up a PC membership and lets try and get Morton in.
Canada in general and Alberta in particular are on the edge in my opinion of tipping into a socialist morass the likes of which have not been seen in a long time. I think Albertans (and Canadians) are starting to think that the government is the perfect utensil for dividing up oil and tax revenues rather than cutting taxes and encouraging private enterprise.
Hmmm. Sounds like Morton had the peckerwood vote lined up. Along with the anti-gay and anti-Muslim vote.
hey budd. Excuse my ignorance...but what is the "peckerwood" vote? Thanks
johnboy,
Peckerwood is a southern U.S. expression with implications similar to redneck. Budd is one of those "south of the border" types who all good Canadian leftists are supposed to hate (when they can take time out from hating Joooz and any Canadian who lives more than 200 miles from Trawna.
Well if hate is what Budd Campbell wants he gets it from me to him in spades. What a goof.
Ted Morton for President of the Republlic of Alberta!!!!!
A man with a gun is a citizen
A man without one is a subject
I figured as much. Anytime someone advocates for freedom, the Stalinists come out and start name calling, thinking that calling someone a redneck or a racist somehow validates their left wing view of the world and trumps any further discussion on the matter. Too funny.
Left wingers used to really infuriate me because they were incapable of rational thought, now I find them quite entertaining. Their ability to argue around a point and their inability to comprehend even the simplest facets of human nature is comical
Ted Morton knows the Canadian constitution inside out and no supreme court judge will pull the wool over his eyes. He is also by far, the best speaker of the group, which I guess doesnt count for much, but after Ralphie, it would be nice.
Ted for premier. If not, Lyle Oberg with Ted as Justice minister.
Wow - if only the Alberta public were as supportive of Morton as we are in here. My wife and I just bought our PC memberships exclusively to vote for Morton in a month - for many reasons, but social conservatism is strongly among them.
Peckerwood? Yes, a southern US expression meaning a hic or redneck or bigot.
Morton may be an academic, but he's certainly not trying to win this thing on an appeal to abstract reasoning. I still want to know who finances this lobby group the Centre for Freedom and Democracy.
Centre for Freedom and Democracy was started by Link Byfield and is financed by memebership and donations. Ted Morton has nothing to do with it. He was invited, along with others, to participate in the weekend congress that was just held.
Thin about how many albertans voted for Ted Morton for senator. Many of them will support him for leader. If he loses, and Dinning wins and does the same job he did as education minister or finance minister, watch for Morton to take over the Alliance. Should Iggy win and tries to put in a carbon tax, watch for Morton to start a movement to separate. As for the rude names, remember our bumber stickers, PROUD TO BE A REDNECK ALBERTAN.
I'm with you MikeP on Morton and Oberg. Not sure about the Justice part... I like Morton's ideas esp. about uniting the right. Oberg troubles me after the skeleton thing, but I get the sense his heart's in the right place, and he seems to have some sensible plans.
Dinning is too eager and too much baggage. Too many interests in the private sector. Don't appreciate his ideas on offering tax cuts to atract under 25's.
Norris is too desperate. When we passed through Edson in August he was pushing memberships in the local paper. Trying to entice 16 year olds to 'vote for the next Premier of Alberta'. Don't like his consulting in leiu of campaign donations, wonder if it passed the smell test. Don't see him doing it anymore. The only way I might consider voting for PC, is if Morton is leader.
The thing that worries me about Oberg is that all of the unions (save for the teachers of course, heh heh) are getting behind him. So...I'm not sure what he has promised them to garner their support. The last losing cause the unions ot behind was the NDP and then they tried supporting the Liberals (Buzz Hargrove). Seems like the unions are the kiss of death.
Budd, I am a hick, and a redneck. I am most certainly not a bigot! I am against all racism. Unlike most liberals I know I strongly believe that ALL people should be treated equally regardless of gender, skin color, religous belief, or sexual orientation. No special treatment for anyone.
Morton has you all really fooled doesn't he? Always talking about "free lunches", he has, like Karl Rove, selected his 'righteous' issues to get the rural folks all riled up - merely for the purpose of destroying the PC Party, then Canada. A US Republican from Wyoming, a former socialist who fled the country during Vietnam, a chicken hawk like Cheney fearful of being seen as less masculine somehow. Wants to lower corporate taxes while they're walking off with hundreds of millions of profits per annum. A demogogue therefore. John A Macdonald had him pegged - dismantle Canada someday to have us (surrepticiously) under Texas...THis man is not a conservative, but micromanages control - totally inexperienced in business. He's an ideologue. And that is always the enemy of conservative liberty. Always. Just send him back south.
