Cue theme music for Chariots Of Fire...

The 2012 London Olympics have been plunged into controversy by the discovery that the Games will clash with Ramadan, the most holy month in the Islamic calendar.

The clash will put Muslim athletes at a disadvantage as they will be expected to fast from sunrise to sunset for the entire duration of the Games.

[...]

Massoud Shadjareh, chairman of the London-based Islamic Human Rights Commission, said: "They would not have organised this at Christmas. It is equally stupid to organise it at Ramadan.

"It shows a complete lack of awareness and sensitivity.

Somebody needs to inform Mr. Shadjareh that it's not called "Christmas" in our sensitive and aware secular Western society. Speaking of which - Muslims might consider coming up with a new secular word for that Ramadan thing before somebody gets offended.

Bravo if you chose the reference to Chariots of Fire because one of the main protaganists refused to run on a Sunday due to his Christian faith.

As someone in one of the comments of the original article said....the WORLD need not stop because it is Ramadan.

As to the winter olympics run during Christmas....well that would be one day only not 30 days. And nobody loses an apendage for doing so.

finally, if you can find a muslim country capable of hosting the olympics then they can set the dates.

and the olympics have been going on since before christmas and more so before ramadan.

so christmas has dybs.

and anyway its a western/european/white caucasian invention so muslims need to come up with their own world athletic event and then watch as we protest the bad timing of their gathering on our religious holidays.

sheeesh.

Perhaps someone should let Massoud Shadjareh know that it is the "summer" Olympics, not the winter one. Bringing up Christmas is just lame. They are always probing the limits aren't they, just to see how far we'll bend over.

And will we all remember that 2012 will be the 40th anniversary of the Munich killings? Yuppers 1972 and who did the evil deed?

Not in the same league, but the World Junior Hockey Championships are played during Christmas and New Years.

Really, who cares what they think anymore.

Ramadan? Oh yeah, I remember staying there once.

Just musing...do the muslim women compete in these games??If so,how do they run in the long garb,or see? If wearing the full-face veil...could make the javelin throw especially entertaining ! Oh oh,maybe that comment is anti-muslim. Sammy

So what, let the muslim countrys boycott the games, instead of the rest of the world boycotting if the games are changed. What muslim has any chance of doing anything worthwhile at the olympics except maybe a few beheadings of the winner. Don't give in to them.

A quick Google search "Muslim Olympic medalists" and "Islamic Olympic medalists" comes up with zero for hits (using the quotes to do the search). Doing a search for "Muslim women Olympics" revealed this hit: http://www.altmuslim.com/perm.php?id=1279_0_26_0_C25

Reading it through and looking at the comments explains succinctly why we needn't care what Massoud Shadjareh has to say or do about the Olympics.

Just another veiled threat.

Does anyone know if they are outraged, provoked, or both by the 2012 games?

geez, another fatwa?

Londonistan is the capitol of the Islamic Republic of Britain - and they're too stupid to figure out their own calendar a few years into the future because they're so busy dreaming about what they can blow up today. It's hard to sympathize with these morons.

In the Arab Middle East, the 1973 Yom Kipur war is also called the 'Ramadan War'. Why? Because it was launched during the month of Ramadan.

If the Egyptian and Syrian armies have the strength to launch a sneak attack accross the desert during the so-called holy month, then why they heck can't those same Syrians and Egyptians get up the stgrength to play beach volleyball?

You know there are only 3 sports approved of in the Koran: swimming, archery and camel racing. Camel racing isn't in the olympics, muslims can't go swimming without giant swimming trunks (the islamic personal area goes from the bellybutton to knees) and no one gives a crap about archery anyways. And on top of that, the whole islamic concept of sport is antithetical to the olympic games.

The olympics were for peaceful competition and exemplified sportsmanship. The koran only allows those sports insofar as they prepare you for jihad.

I doubt the women's events will be affected. If they started swimming in their burquas now, they might be finished before Ramadan 2012.

if you can swim the length of a pool and not drown in that tent thingy you deserve a medal...and more.

I can't wait to see muslim figure skating, especially the dancing and pairs. or are they planning to introduce a new event, burning cars, or beheadings. They would win those, Will losers be killed aka the saddam boys.

A quick Google search "Muslim Olympic medalists" and "Islamic Olympic medalists" comes up with zero for hits (using the quotes to do the search).

I think that Mr. Shadjareh would do well to immerse his head in a toilet three times and only pull it out twice, but there have certainly been Olympic medalists from largely Islamic countries. Naim Suleimanoglu in weight-lifting (from Turkey, and, before he escaped, Bulgaria) comes to mind, although I don't know whether he's Islamic or not.

"The clash will put Muslim athletes at a disadvantage as they will be expected to fast from sunrise to sunset for the entire duration of the Games."

Ok, so the muslim athletes lose. .... uh ... I'm not certain I see the problem here.

Might want to consider a calendar that doesn't lose 11 days a year, too.

December is summer in the southern hemisphere. The Summer Olympics in Sydney or Cape Town might clash with Christmas, except that the folks who buy television rights won't like the size of their audience around that time, and therefore the IOC won't allow it. Got to keep the customers (TV rights holders) happy, after all.

The dhimming of Britain continues.

A British Airways worker sent home for refusing to conceal a small Christian cross while on duty……I was forced to take unpaid leave because I have refused to remove my cross or put it under my cravat………
"Our uniform policy, which has been in place for a number of years, states these items can be worn, underneath the uniform," he said. "Other religious items such as turbans, hijabs and bangles can be worn as it is not practical for staff to conceal them beneath their uniforms."

Is the Olympics mandatory? Correct me if I'm wrong, don't females also have cycles?

Should the Sikh's be forced to wear the headgear and the daggers in everything that they participate in?

"Not in the same league, but the World Junior Hockey Championships are played during Christmas and New Years."

Right, not in the same league but a damnside more interesting.

As for the muslims being offended---well, aren't they ALWAYS offened about something?

Horny Toad

Ramalamadingdong is bound to conflict with everything at one time or another.

This is just another example of them trying to get Sharia law implemented through the back door.

We keep giving them inches and they are slowly adding up to yards. The time is long overdue where we simply tell them that the world doesn't care that you are offended because of (add latest outrage here) If the scheduled time of the Olympics clashes with your religious convictions, well sorry, perhaps you will be able to compete in the next games.

Ramadan? Oh yeah, I remember staying there once

lol, I just about spewed my coffee all over my keyboard when I read that.
thanks Peter

I'm offended by Ramadan.

"Just musing...do the muslim women compete in these games??"

Thanks, sammy, that conjures up a Monty Python like skit of women in burkhas running the 100 metre hurdles. lol

Can't wait to see the women's diving event, beach volleyball, marathon, long jump, relay race and oh yes syncronised swimming will be an absolute joy to watch. All male competitors will be compelled to carry an AK 47, and fire it into the air regardless of where the bullets will land. One of the mullahs can be the patron to check that everything is Islamic and the religious police will be there to provide security.

Cry me a river liberal wussie appoligists so what now will they do in the new islaimic kingdom of england?

"Ramadan? Oh yeah, I remember staying there once."

Peter, please don't give them any ideas.

You just know The Ramada is next on their fatwa list for sullying the name of their sacred month.

After that it's Casino Rama.

Then a whole bunch of male sheep.

Where will it end?

Look, many, many Islamic countries participate in the "islamic olympics", so if they're not happy about the date of the 2012 games they needn't participate.

In any case, why would any observant Muslim even care about the Olympic Games seeings they originated in pagan Greece and are therefore *haram*.

Where will it end?

Trooper singer Ra McGuire must be plenty worried now.

Strangelove,

Ramadan or Ramasheep - Khomeini, Mo and the Quran approves of both.

Glad so many of you have decided not to take it any more, and are pointing out the facts about the rop. The fact is, when talking to a muslim, and you point out all the hypocracy of their rop, they really look at you wide eyed and shocked. Apparently the islamic religion is being taught in some american schools, to show tolerance. So far they haven't had any role playing of beheadings, buy heaven help the student that mentions Christmas, or says The Our Father. Again, their tolerant religion is very intolerant of anything and anyone else.

I understand it was the NAZIS that started the olyimpic tourch event
