A Doctor Responds

To Michael J. Fox;

Mr. Fox and his ads’ sponsors are guilty of conflating embryonic stem cell research, which the GOP candidates and many Americans oppose for destroying a human life in the name of curing other people’s diseases, with stem cell research in general, which includes adult stem cell research and umbilical cord blood stem cell research.

The only limits in question are on federal funding of new embryonic stem cell lines, requiring the sacrifice of new embryos. Private and state-funded research (California voters are spending six billion dollars borrowing money to fund this) is ongoing. The implicit claim that research based on new embryos is “the most promising” is absurd, completely unsupported by the scientific literature, and an insult to voters, based as it is on the assumption that they are incapable of understanding the issue. Too stupid to tell the difference, is the elitist assumption underlying this campaign.

That's a pretty good summation.
I'm sure MJF can put plenty of his own money into whatever private venture he sees fit.
The tone of the ads is pandering to the ill informed who would turn it around on the federal government.

Isnt Micheal turning his back on the characters he played all his life? You know like the hard right son of a couple of leftie loonies, or the city manager to a republican mayor. Oh right he was just playing.

Isn't Michael from Canada? Why isn't he in Canada pushing his government to fund stem cell research? Isn't socialized medicine supposed to take care of him?

MJFox is from Namao ,north of Edmonton, but grew up in Vancouver. At least he is more sincere than Bono.

MJF took out US citizenship in 2000. He has also admitted in a book he wrote that he goes off his meds when appearing before congress or other groups. Stem cell research is legal in Michegan, and this proposition is to make cloning legal. I have had friends and neighbors with this disease, and it takes years before the medicine stops helping a lot. Fox was used in this blatant attempt to make the public feel sorry for him. I bet there are going to be investigators following him for a long time, to prove his condition is not as bad as he acted. Wait for those to hit the net. How low will the democrats go. There are millions of citizens with some sort of disability, and to be used like that is disgraceful. Remember the outrage over Jerry Lewis using sufferers of MD in his telethons. I didn't think politicians could get much lower than Kims ad re Chretain, but they have. Another entertainer off my list.

Off his meds?

Then I take that back.

he is the same as Bono then. freely requesting other folks money whilst changing things for himself.

He should be ashamed pf himself. My 11 year old asked me how this could happen and I still dont know what to tell him.

Ditto Dr. Davenport's article -- all fits with what I've heard speaking to other specialists.

"He has also admitted in a book he wrote that he goes off his meds when appearing before congress or other groups."

Which book? Have you read it? Or are you just regurgitating what someone else said? I have searched the web and found no reference to Michael J. Fox going off his meds - except for Limbaugh saying that he must either be off his meds or he is acting.

If Fox could still appear normal on camera on his medications he wouldn't have quit Spin City, where he was making a lot of money.

Bravo Dr. Mary Davenport. It is amazing to see a obstetrician-gynecologist with such specialties in Parkinsons Disease.
Certainly she is not biased on this issue as someone on the board of the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists

As usual, the whole public debate about Mr Fox is full of irrelevancies. There is no denying that Parkinsons disease is debilitating, can affect relatively young people and that stem cell research would seem to hold out the best prospects for a cure.Whether or not he exaggerates his symptoms is beside the point. The cure will never happen if antagonistic political laymen are allowed to direct policy in this scientific endeavour. The mostly religious arguments for banning human cloning to create a donor embryo seem blind to the fact that this is what actually happens in an in-vitro fertilization clinic. Here, a number of fertilized eggs are selected as being the most "promising" and are implanted into the patient. The rest are mostly destroyed, though some may make their way to a stem-cell lab; I dont know, though I surely hope so.
The situation reminds me of those anti-abortion activists who take the conventional birth-control pill. These compounds may actually be considered abortifacients in as much as they do not prevent fertilization but make it much more difficult to happen. If it does, then another of their actions is to make the lining of the uterus inhospitable to the fertilized embryo and it is subsequently ejected.
As to whether the most useful stem cells come from embryos I would leave to those involved in stem-cell research.

Follow the grant money. Academics are not overly concerned where the research dollars come from, just that they come. (Append the usual caveats and disclaimers ...individual != average, etc)

Spin City, and he is spinning now. Using sufferers of any disease, and making them victims is beyond decency. They fall into the same category who call those with aids victims. Those with aids got it by their lifestyle choices. There are other diseases that are hereditary, then there are those that just happen because someone didn't wash there hands, or decided to go to work, or send their kids to school when ill. There was a time that if you got a communicable disease you were quarantined in your home for up to two weeks and a public nurse visited to make sure you were there.

Trevor: You did not search enough. Go to Rush today and click on the video (aired on inside edition) and watch and hear MJF tell Diane Sawyer that he went off his meds when he testified before congress. If he did it once he could do it again. The thought that only the democrats care about disease is crap. As for meds, if you take too much, it can cause excessive movement, if you take too little, it can cause problems, and if you don't take them, other problems. Fox was used by the democrats and it will backfire. I have a family member who takes several meds a day, and I know what too little, too much, and not any can do. Timing is also very important. If one decides to get political they can expect to be attacked, be they WTC widows, Cindy S and others. They better be 110% honest or they will be vilified as liars.

Windbag Adler was in fine form this afternoon all but accusing Rush of being Satan himself. I'd send him a link to this forum vis a vis MJF's admission that he goes off his meds to play to the audience, but that would waste valuable seconds.

He then went on to label Peter MacKay as Little Satan. WHY are conservatives held to a different standard than the looney left?

This is an add that contradicts Mike Fox's version of the Embryonic Stem Cell Research bill.

www.rawstory.com/news/2006/Passions_Caviezel_sports_stars_oppose_stem_1025.html

The major researchers on stem cells are in Canada and another US researcher just arrived today. Why, because our government funds it ant the US doesn't. They allow it, just don't fund it. Adult stem cells have produces success in many errors, but embryonic stem cells have not produced anything remotely close to any cure. California borrowed 6b dollars for this, but no results. 25 women have died donating eggs, and 6000 others have severe complications from trying to donate eggs. This is a womans issue as only they can have eggs harvested. Would MJF let his wife be a candidate for this, using the very dangerous drug that is involved. Probably not, but is prepared to let some other woman try and die. Trevor, how about you, would you sacrifice your mother, sister, girlfriend or wife (if you have one)

Trevor,

I assume that you automatically disregard all arguments made in favor of stem cell research by those in favor of abortion, as they are obviously too biased to have a relevant professional opinion, no matter their credentials.

Shane O,

On this issue I would disregard the arguments of someone who sits on the board of a pro-choice or a pro-life organization. Either one would show that the person has alterior motives and that either pro-choice or pro-life is what is fueling their opinions on stem cell research and is not able to objectively look at the issue. That seems pretty obvious to me.

Trevor,

Sorry, I am a little confused here...help me out:

Why disregard logical argument and observational evidence just because you don't like the person's philosophy?

Isn't that, like, shooting the messenger?

But you'll listen to someone who doesn't sit on a pro-life/choice board? Is the problem then that an individual feels convicted enough about an issue to get involved?

It doesn't make sense to me to disregard the message because of the person's opinions, as though simply believing something means that the person is thinking illogically about the issue.

Bush shilling for Republican votes is what I get from this thread. He with no brain catering to the religious right. Sounds to me that MJF is just reminding voters of the differences in opinion.

Bush will of course go down in history as one of the biggest disgraces to trespass on the White House. Frankly, I was more comfortable with Reagan who was totally devoid of brain cells near the end. Why do the Republicans keep throwing up this trash to run the nation?

MaryT,

You are so full of crap on this issue that I have no plans on trying to discuss it with you.

But as for your question as to whether I would "sacrifice" my mother, sister, girlfriend etc. That is rich. 1) They are adults who can do what they want. 2) Using your numbers, I would be probably hundreds or thousands of times more likely to "sacrifice" them if I allowed them to get pregnant. Or how about letting them cross the street?

So 25 women dying needlessly is ok because the odds are high that they won't? And getting pregnant is ahigh risk scrifice so should be avoided. What a crock of BS

I would never trust a person who was pro life! sarc off. Pro lifers are not against stem cell research. Please show me one, just one study, in embryonic stem cell research, that has had significant positive results. You can't because there are none that have had any positive results. Not one. Nada. Waste of time! Unstable genetic material! Always wants to form a complete human being!

"My God it's ALIVE!"
"But the grafted cells started to show areas that no longer consisted of dopamine-releasing neurons, but of dividing cells that had the potential to give rise to tumors.

The researchers killed the animals before they could know for sure, and said any experiments in humans would have to be done very cautiously."

Embryonic cells dividing ! Growing into tumors! Sort of reminds me of that poor 911 chaplin killed by falling "debris!" The politically correct mindset of the wacked out looney tunes set! Tumors indeed!

Coming soon to a theatre near you! "Attack of the Killer Embryos" starring Michael J Fox as the misguided but determined Professor "Come quickly Igor the new cells are starting to form! But wait they're starting to mutate! What does that growth look like to you? My God it's alive! Quickly we must kill it! No one must know! We'll be ruined! The funding will dry up, the donations will come to an end! We just need more funding , more time!"

"Fox wholeheartedly believes that if there is a concentrated effort from the Parkinson's community, elected representatives in Washington, DC, and (most importantly) the general public, researchers can pinpoint the cause of Parkinson's and uncover a cure by 2010."
2010! Wow! no small dreamer he! Honored at an awards ceremony in December of 2005. Total raised for Parkinsons research? 76 million from 2000 to 2005. Can you spell I DON'T WANT TO DIE.
Remember Spam Filter is in effect. Google is my friend.

I really love this issue. It just brings out the best of everyone.

MJF is indeed guilty (by his own admission) of going off his meds. He wanted to demonstrate what life is like for someone with Parkinsons. It's that simple.

Yes, MJF can afford the best meds but they aren't good enough to make his life as normal as it once was. So he seems to have embraced the stem cell debate in a large way. Good for him.

I won't try to settle the argument on embryonic vs. adult stem cells. That is way outside my scope of expertise.

I do know one thing, (and as a right-winger I expect a bunch of not-so-polite responses). Life is cheap. Life is short. You should enjoy it while you are here because all this 'science' that has been debated here pretty much precludes a God (or Gods).

Stem cell reseach of any kind that can help or prevent nasty, painful and costly diseases is more than welcome.

"Isn't Michael from Canada? Why isn't he in Canada pushing his government to fund stem cell research? Isn't socialized medicine supposed to take care of him?"

Michael J Fox can get in line like the rest of us in the Gulag Archipelago.

Wonder how much he was paid for this commercial. Going off your meds to brainswash the public into believing this is the way you are 24/7 is over the line, and pretending that there is no cure unless stem cells are used is also over the line. The meds he takes, where do they come from. How long have they been on the market, who discovered them. I fully expect him to return to Canada soon, to get the cdn taxpayer to pay all his and his families medical costs. To all those who have this disease and can't afford the medicine, those are the ones I feel sorry for. Fox should adopt some of those seniors and pay for their meds. That would be doing something. I agree, he is no better than bono. Neither Fox nor the democrats have helped themselves with this ad. Remember the Chretain ad run by Kim C, and what it did to her and the conservatives.

Remember the terrorists that bombed all the labs that used animals in research. Why do they think it is ok to experiment with humans.

Like most right-leaning people, Brian M is honest, which is respectable. The content of what he believes though, is shameful. His "Life is Cheap" belief dreadfully and succinctly sums up the fundamental axiom of the entire Left. It underlies every argument in the whole abortion/euthanasia/stem cell/etc debate.

At least he calls a spade a spade. Funny, it used to be okay to call *people* spades too, didn't it? Back when they were property. Maybe someday the final 'unpersons' (those with umbilical cords) will become persons too.

Just wait until the tihs really hits the fan.
Being lied to all these years and having some steal and rob americans, civil war is coming soon.

google Aaron Russo's America,Freedom to Fascism

watch to find out why the IRS has been robbing people for years, No law compelling people to pay income Tax, that would piss me off

New movie coming to a theater near you soon.

"Why do they think it is ok to experiment with humans."

Who is "they"? I know a lady who was very happy to participate in an experimental cancer drug, even though it did not give her an extra day. Consenting adults have the right to say no. Your blanket affirmations/accusations are just rubbish.

The untold story of the embroyonic stem cell debate is that using material from a foreign host, in this case another human being in the form of an embryo, would mean that the receipent would require anti rejection drug therapy. This is similiar to a person who has an organ transplant from another person. Thus there are drug companies that would make a lot of money from the sale of these drugs.

Trevor: The name of M J Fox's book-Lucky Man,
published by Hyperion, in April 2002. Go read it, and you will find the evidence that he goes off his med. Also, he stated that to Diane Sawyer, and again last night on an american tv show.
Rush L can get carried away in some of his monologues but he also gives you access to the facts, publications, video clips etc, to back up what he says.
No outrage when Whoopi mader her remarks re how her private bush was special and useful, but the bush in the WH was useless. No outrage when George Clooney made snide remarks about Charlton Heston admitting he had Alzeimers. People like you refuse to accept the truth about anything other than Harper and Bush are bad. If the dems win on Nov 7, you will really see bad with Pelosi as speaker and Reid as senate leader. Be thankful Pres Bush has the veto. The head of ABC news has broken ranks and said the msm is biased, and they are losing viewers and readers. Even if the dems win next month, they will only have a very slim majority, and 33 of their candidates are very conservative. Who will they vote and side with on issues. In the states anyone can support any party or issue and not be kicked out like we do.
Sorry, Fox said last night that he was overmedicated when he made that commercial. That can cause many problems also. Read his book.

Maple Stump: They, are people like you. No regard for human life and are prepared to allow some women to die and others to have severe complications. Eventually these women will sue, just like the breast implant ones did. Guess what, what little experimentation done with stem cells re parkinsons has shown it might help parkinsons, but causes tumors on the brain. Pick your poison.

Poor M J, he is out there having to defend himself. Bet he never thought that would happen to him. Everyone watching him from now on will ask, is he or isn't he on his meds. You can be sure someone is out there with a video to catch him. Did you watch him on Curic. I don't think that all those that suffer from this horrible disease appreciate all the media attention. And yes I have friends with it, and some had died. They are not happy with MJ.

Well I'm not going fall lock step into the "if the Republicans say it, it must be true crowd" Having been an aquaitance of someone that suffered from parkinsons for over 20 years. I'll sum up quite succintly...

You guys are really making yourselves looks a lot less human.

Next will be kissing Canada hater Rush the Retard's feet.
