This is alarming at first glance, but may turn out to be just a rather insignificant step in Britain's unfortunate appeasement of Islamic demands.
However, I have been very disappointed with the positions taken in public statements by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Of course we must remember that the head of the Anglican Communion is the royal family, and our desire is that the monarchy and the British church hold firm in upholding Western religious and cultural values.
I must say that the recent pronouncement by the Pope stands in vivid contrast to that of the Archbishop of Canterbury. I would say that the Pope has regained a lot of the moral ground that was lost by the Catholic Church with the horrible pedophile scandal.
Nothing will ever be a consolation for those abused by pedophile priests, and nothing will wipe the stain of those predators from the ledger. However, Pope Benedict appears to be moving forcefully to exclude predators from the priesthood, and now he has illuminated and defended Western religion and Western culture very publicly and very forcefully.
I doubt very seriously if any Catholics will be in favor of having their heads directed to Mecca when they are laid to rest in consecrated ground.

Globe and Mail writer slams Harper, Charest over 'opportunistic' criticism
A Globe and Mail writer whose article suggesting Quebec's francophone culture may have contributed to the Dawson College shootings said Prime Miniser Stephen Harper and Quebec Premier Jean Charest rebuked her column just to get votes in Quebec.
It is kinda ludicrous to suggest that a person went on a shooting rampage because they grew up Anglo in Quebec.
I'm an anglophone and I live in Montreal. It is a ludcirous assertion to blame the (admittedly) facist language policies of the Quebec government for the actions of a deranged individual. I don't like the policies either, I don't think they would stand a constitutional challenge, however, it is a gigantic leap of non-logic to assume that the crazy guy was crazy because he grew up Anglo in Quebec.
I would skewer the Globe and Mail writer too - because it is a fallacious hypothesis.

It's a big issue to Muslims, obviously, is it not? This is the "death of a thousand cuts". Almost daily, one reads of this stuff going on in Europe. It's NOT about the dead. It IS about the living, and their right to do whatever they wish within the law, even to bury their dead in a manner they see fit, WITHOUT having to look for "guidance" from the state. The custom from now on will default to Muslim traditions. What makes this MINORITY so bloody special?
I read the other day that Theo van Gogh's son Lieuwe has been threatened with physical violence many, many times by Dutch Muslims since his father was murdered. The police do NOTHING about it. Why? They've been cowed by Islam, radical or otherwise, to turn a blind eye. At the same time, Oriana Fallaci is hounded across Europe for writing books which are demonstrably accurate in their depiction of Islamic history. No? Look up Ibn Warraq's work on the net. Or try Walid Shoebat (www.shoebat.com) for a real eye opener about today's Islam.

Why doesn't the Christian minority in Saudi Arabia lobby the state to ensure that all graves there... that's ALL graves in Saudi Arabia... be aligned to face Rome, unless one's survivors apply to have their loved one laid to rest facing, um, Westminster? Couldn't be that important to the Saudi state, could it?

Ya got a point about that "hysteria" bit, no question. What the heck can these guys do in the name of their faith, anyway? Fly a plane into a building or set off a bomb in a train station or a night club or a subway? THAT crap's NEVER gonna happen!
Christians do things in the name of god - like blow up abortion clinics - all the time. Why is one kind of relgious violence more fear-worthy than others?
Should I hold all Christians accountable for the actions of a few crazy pro-Lifers or the Lord's Resistance Army (made of Christians and mostly conscripted CHILDREN) in Africa? Of course not.
What can I say, fundamentalists do wacky things. Look at Waco. Look at Oklahoma City - they were 'Christians', at least, nominally - right?
To suggest that all Muslims somehow hold extremist beliefs is not only mistaken - its dangerous. If I were to accuse you all of being abortion clinic bombers, you would be rightfully offended. Hence, we should not brand all Muslims 'terrorists'. It is inaccurate and inflammatory.
You are acting like Chicken Little telling everyone the sky is going to fall.
Gayle's a sophomoric, linear thinker, who takes everything literally and indulges in magic thinking: If you don't like what's happening about anything, at any level, just let the MPs and candidates know and--hey, presto!--next election, your views will be realized, like really soon, if you can get enough people who think like you--easy as pie--elected. Sheesh.
A person like this has no understanding that there are symbolic actions, though small in themselves, which actually fill the screen.
How much for that Louisiana beachfront property? The various levels of government are going to plough some $200 billion into New Orleans' reconstruction; THAT'S lunacy.
Salmon Rushdie has been under state protection since 1989 because of a fatwa calling for his execution because he wrote a book. Don't foget the French "carbecues" last winter... over cartoons. More lunacy for ya.
I would have been on your side, until Sept. 11TH, 2001. Europeans should be actively trying to preserve their culture and traditions because, frankly, Muslim cultural mores so far in the 21ST century don't really look progressive as compared to "Western" values.
Machinator's as sophomoric and deluded as Gayle--possibly more so. Equivalency between Muslim jihadists and abortion clinic bombers? (I condemn both.) However, one form of violence represents a very few, isolated crackpots, condemned by the movement they claim to represent, while the other form of violence is world wide and altogether sanctioned by too many Muslim leaders and their followers.
Hundreds of thousands, possibly into the millions, of innocents have been slaughtered in the name of jihad, with the tacit approval of Muslim society. I invite Machinator to provide data that would validate his--preposterous--claim that abortion clinic bombers are as prolific as jihadists and an equal threat to Western Civilization.
Machinator (9:02PM)
"...Christians... blow up abortion clinics- all the time"??? What sophistry (better term is B.S.).
All the time? You don't even need to count on the fingers of 2 hands, if ya know what I mean.
What was it... 40%? 60%? The number of Muslims living in the U.K. today who would prefer to live under Sharia? Somewhere around 1.5 million people, in case you were wondering.
Let’s face it. There’s a lot a crap on the internet. And I’m not talking about the deep dark recessess where the losers and freaks hang out.
But every so often I come a across something that takes my breath away. That’s the case with the blog All Things Beautiful
This blog is a work of art in progress. Lush, rich, vibrant are just some of the words that come to mind when viewing this site. And it doesn’t hurt that it’s on the right side of the spectrum as well.
'Salmon Rushdie has been under state protection since 1989 because of a fatwa calling for his execution because he wrote a book. Don't foget the French "carbecues" last winter... over cartoons. More lunacy for ya.'
Salmon Rushdie is an overrated hack, who used the controversy over the Satanic Verses to propel a fairly lackluster career.
If you read up, you'll find that I accuse all religions of containing extremist elements and doing horrible things.
If I use the examples of a Wahhabist, or a Methodist - yes they don't look very progressive, do they? What about the Mormons and the polygamy?
I fail to see how keeping coffins of Muslims interred in the cemetary facing East contrary to their wishes is 'protecting our values'. Sounds more like hysteria.
Stop putting ridiculous words and stupid ideas in other people's mouths, Machinator. Speak for yourself. (I'd also appreciate if you'd do so with a modicum of intelligence, a trait I've not yet discerned in most of what you've said.)
P.S. As tangible and literal as it is, a baby's smile is one symbolic action that fills the screen, in all kinds of ways. Machinator, if you use your imagination (stunted though it seems to be), there are literally--now there's a concept that seems to appeal to you--thousands of symbolic actions that fill the screen. Good luck and sweet dreams!

You have managed to dodge answering any questions in an attempt to make yourself look intelligent. I realize you have a sympathetic audience, but you still look foolish.
I repeat:
Perhaps, you could elaborate how this 'symbolic action' 'fills the screen'.
Perhaps you could also share you views on how to best get an agenda effected by a government, since you seem to eschew working the traditional way.
I see no answers, only a pathetic insult and an attempt to cover up a wounded ego. I patiently await your response.
If Machinator couldn't write and spell, I'd estimate this person's age at below that of reason. The arrogance and ignorance of this person regarding religion is astonishing. The fact that he/she has the audacity to display such folly, for all of us to see, adds narcissism to the toxic mix.
I see NO credible threat in a conventional military confrontation.
No kidding. No one else does either. But, let's try nuclear, the Big One, straight out of Iran. I mean what's it take for you to believe the intentions of a regime that is so clear about it's intentions on a 24/7 basis?
relgion is anti-intellectual.
DeCarte and Aquinas would disagree. So would some of the Greeks. Maybe because religion isn't based on reason and logic. It's a different entity. Interesting, but, minds far better than yours(so sorry), many of our great scientists were religious. Religion is only wrong to the incurious and intolerant. And, the utterly boring sots among us are incapable of tolerating the spiritual life in others.
Is it rational to fight the spread of AIDS in Africa though 'abstinency programs'?
Well, let's see, it's a very definite lifestyle disease. 100% preventable. IV drugs or promiscuous sex are the confirmed top reasons for getting it. We know in Africa, especially along the trans-continental truck routes, that almost all of the prostitutes are infected. The males are fecklessly uninterested in wearing condoms. So, it might be real smart to not have sex with multiple partners, wear a condom, oops, cultural taboos prohibit that, or just abstain and save your life. I mean it's sex or death in most of Africa. I think the Church is pointing out the obvious.
So, Machinator, hold fast to your two big biases - religion and the futility of sexual responsiblitiy, it's so perfect for a bore who is incurious and without tolerance. Humans are a little more interesting than your shallow descriptions of us.

Budapest or Bust, Hungary on Fire
By Sam Urquhart
Neo-liberal reforms collide with government lies as protesters take to the streets
Hungary is on fire. Protesters have stormed the state broadcaster in reaction to the publication of ‘off the record’ remarks by the Hungarian Prime Minister, Ferenc Gyurcsany, in which he admitted wholesale lying to the electorate. Police have been wounded and beaten back, cars are burning in the streets while the Prime Minister has rebuffed an offer of resignation from his Justice Minister.
What’s going on?
Some people are comparing the protests to 1956, when Hungary briefly struck for freedom (and neutrality) by withdrawing from the Warsaw Pact, only to experience a brutal invasion from the Soviet Union. Perhaps that’s an exaggeration, but this is certainly a hugely important moment for Hungary. The question is, will the Hungarian people reclaim power from an unaccountable, lying, corrupt executive, before it is too late and the nation becomes locked into policies that will doom thousands to ill health, poverty and insecurity?
Gyurcsany himself has admitted that the future is bleak. Speaking to reporters in early September, he said that “everybody in Hungary knows that real income will decrease in the next two years…and very significant social groups will feel their interests hurt. If this simple rejection is transformed and mixed with national radicalism and social populism, then this is a dangerous thing.”
This “simple rejection” is a democratic uprising against unpopular economic policies that have been systematically, criminally mis-sold to the Hungarian people, with the connivance of the IMF and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development – the true leaders of Hungary. ...- http://www.gnn.tv/articles/2557/Budapest_or_Bust_Hungary_on_Fire

Unless and until the Muslim communities worldwide stand up and fight against this impression it will continue. Not only continue but grow.
Just as in Germany during the war,( you pick one) it will not be good enough to say, 'that was not how I felt, I thought it was wrong but I could not stand for what is right'.. this will be the challenge of the Muslim communities.
So far, however, they seem to be failing badly denouncing the head choppers and murderers of the innocent. About time the stood up to be counted.
I noticed that machinator came here looking for news of what is going on in Caledonia. There is news concerning a rally and all kinds of updates at the wakeup call website.
I am not happy about how the Ontario government and the OPP have caved to native demands in Caledonia, leaving honest tax paying citizen swinging in the wind with no protection. They just stand there and watch the natives commit all manner of crimes and continue with harassing behaviour against citizens of the town.
It is a DISGRACE.. and if your point was and is that we should be looking after issues at home going on right under our noses before we got on our hobby horses regarding the world wide threat, I submit to you that both are more than worthy of our attention.

Come on, don't gimme that "hyperbole" guff.
All Things Beautiful: A shameless plug.
Check it out. It’s on my must read list. ...-

Didn't I just see Pope Benny in a speech decry the linkage between religion and violence and emphasize religion and rationality go hand in hand?
Hmm, kind of misses the point doesn't it Machinator?
lookout (9:19 PM)
I dunno, Rosie O'Donnell might call ya on that. Who would know better? (What was that word? Oh yeah, "hyperbole")
AS YOU'VE NEVER SEEN HIM BEFORE: CLINTON ANGER UNLEASHED

FORMER PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON ON NOT CAPTURING BIN LADEN: 'At least I tried. That's the difference between me and some, including all the right wingers. They ridicule me for trying. They had eight months to try, they did not try. I tried. So I tried and failed'... Video... http://www.youtube.com

'Didn't I just see Pope Benny in a speech decry the linkage between religion and violence and emphasize religion and rationality go hand in hand?'
Simply because I say it, does not make it so. The Pope could tell me the moon was made of cheese - should I believe him?
Demonstratably, relgion is anti-intellectual. The recent stemcell controversies or the persecution of Gallileo should help validate that statement.
Is it rational to fight the spread of AIDS in Africa though 'abstinency programs'? Of course not. Yet that is the approach the Vatican wishes to take.
Religion is the very opposite of rationality. It is superstition.
lookout, you should have paid more attention to your professor. Good luck on the job search, dearest.
Political correctness has done to Britain what communism couldnt with military might.
If Machinator couldn't write and spell, I'd estimate this person's age at below that of reason. The arrogance and ignorance of this person regarding religion is astonishing. The fact that he/she has the audacity to display such folly, for all of us to see, adds narcissism to the toxic mix.
So still no answer? Are you truly that bereft of intellectual ability? It would seem so.
Enlighten us on religion, dropout. I would be more than pleased to hear your views.
Are you saying religion is NOT anti-intellectual? Please, go ahread and try to figure out what it is you are saying, then come back.
I'll wait.

All christain coffins should face BETHEHEM where christ was born
Don't bother. Good night.
Its 'Bethlehem' and 'Christian'. Also the Vatican and the other religious authorities would prefer Christ to be capitalized, as I have done.
I believe the above poster is representative of what I called religions tendency to be 'anti-intellectual'.
Try speaking to your average Southern Baptist, if you don't believe me. You do know the Ozone hole is just a conspiracy made up by scientists, right? Oh - and evolution - thats a lie, right there.
Any questions?
You cannot convince those who have already decided. lookout, I salute your ability to cut and run. Good show!

This “simple rejection” is a democratic uprising against unpopular economic policies that have been systematically, criminally mis-sold to the Hungarian people, with the connivance of the IMF and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development – the true leaders of Hungary. ...-

Why is the troll being fed. Ignore him and he will go away. Some of us live in the real world others never seem to notice what is going on around them.
No, you're on the blogroll now. I'll be coming on to challenge stupidity wherever I see it. And using trackbacks, unlike the drive-byers taking potshots at me.
I've yet to see a weak-kneed naysayer like you actually refute anything I posit. You just grumble about it and disappear. Who's the troll?
You know what? Surprisingly, I agree with this blogs perspectives on some issues - such as the Caledonia standoff. I for one believe we can learn more from our ideological opponents than a legion of sycophants.

No, its not. Honest.
