I hear the Pope today apologized for statements against Islam and how he has "the greatest respect" for the "Religion of Peace". Presumably he has not read this piece. I read Michal Coren in the Toronto Sun newspaper a while back, his column was about using tactical nuclear weapons to remove any possibitly of Iran producing nuclear weapons. What really surprises me is that I do not here the sane from those (US/Irael)who are capable of rendering this possibe. IMO if tactical nuclear weapons were used under these circumtancses it would have a lightening effect on the rest of the ME. The ME would at least see the light.

The cultural religon thing is important for a couple of reasons
1) Get your target right. If you keep firing at the religon for things that arent part of the religon then you're just asking to have your argument torn down.
2)There are differences between culture and religon. One often modifies the other. In the west recently it has been the culture driving some elements of the religon to change. In other times and cultures it is the religon that drives the culure....a good example is the Taliban, where religous dictates were used to try to modify the society.
I wouldnt take any of this to take the line of extreme multiculturalism, i.e. Cannibals need to be fed bodies to maintain their unique and distinctive culture because it is as valid as our own.
Just saying get your target correct. This is a middle eastern and South Asian extreme issue. Bride burnings, honour killings etc. They deserve condemnation and they deserve the full force of the law.....the custom in the land they are living.
Those who are pointing out the lack of condemnation from the places it should be coming, "womens" groups, human rights groups, and yes the predominant religon (Islam) in the area are correct to do so. But this isnt a religous practice any more than decorating trees at Christmas is a religous practice, (and no the two arent equivalent) it is cultural but may be condoned by the religous leaders in that area.
All that being said, yes it is barbaric and should be condemed unapologetically by all.

Major Crime Investigators have identified Hasibullah Sadiqi of Ottawa as a suspect in the Tuesday morning shooting at the Elmvale Aces shopping centre.
Constable Steven Desjourdy tells CFRA News Sadiqi should be considered armed and dangerous.
20-year-old Khatera Sadiqi of Ottawa was killed after being shot in the head while sitting in a parked car.
A 23-year-old man remains in hospital after being shot four times.
