The High Price Of "Safe Injection" Sites

Michael Yon addresses the problems of dealing with an opium-funded Taliban, and the ineffectiveness, as usual, of European allies in responding to a war that is heating up;

There is a widespread notion that Afghanistan is safer for our troops than Iraq, yet Coalition and NATO combat deaths in Afghanistan are per capita nearly identical to those in Iraq. In 2007, it looks as if per capita combat deaths will likely be significantly higher in Afghanistan than in Iraq. Why? There are many reasons, but one of the most important is that our European allies have been slow to recognize the reality that a monster really is under the bed. After years of neglect and dawdling, they are finally beginning to adjust, but they are still not keeping pace with the threat. They are still not providing their people with proper equipment, all while the Taliban is getting stronger from the billion-dollar narcotics backwash that floods enemy coffers. As in Iraq, troop numbers are also dangerously low in Afghanistan, and the handfuls of friendly forces there lack sufficient air power to stretch their security resources.

NATO is tentatively confronting the proximate and growing threat by sending more troops into battle, but they are sending troops with insufficient force protection. During my trip, I visited several bases. To convey just one exchange, but a revealing one: Shaulis needed to meet some Danish engineers who were to fly into Tarin Kot the next day by helicopter. When Shaulis asked an Australian special-forces officer how to identify which helicopter the Danish engineers would arrive in, the Australian officer grimly answered, “It will be the only helicopter flying alone.”

From earlier in the piece;
A reverse symbiosis is at work: Those who benefit most from the opium/heroin trades also benefit most from a destabilized Afghanistan, because a stable country with functioning government systems, reliable security forces, and a framework of laws is a bad climate for the drug trade. Conversely, farmers growing crops such as cotton and beans benefit from a stable government climate, which affords the opportunity to think beyond the next crop cycle. In order to make agriculture a more successful business venture, farmers need a stable government as a partner. But since the interests of poppy farmers and narco-kings are in aggressive opposition to any plan to stabilize Afghanistan, this partnership is not even in the talking stages.

Don't expect Jack Layton and friends to make the connection between their strident support of addiction enablement programs and the price paid by both Afghan civilians and NATO forces half a world away. His fixation on domestic poll-surfing has rendered Mr. Layton intellectually immune to esoteric concepts like "consequences" and the understanding that the most likely outcome of his calls for appeasement and negotiation with the Taliban is to encourage them to kill as many Canadian soldiers as possible.

The nickname "Taliban Jack" may not be so unfair.

Update - NDP MP Pat Martin (Winnipeg Centre) is also backing away from Layton.

And that goes directly to the complaint laid by Moussad.... not enough equipment to fight bin laden, when he had hundreds of millions to arm his followers. ( from Path to 9/11)
I remember when this happened ( Moussad was murdered by bin laden) and that was almost simultaneous to over 400 CIA agents IN Iraq were murdered. .. when this happened it was known SOMETHNG was coming but what ... was not known.
IF they had given Moussad what he needed he might be alive right now and so might all those dear ones in the WTC buildings , at the Pentagon and on United 93.
And now we are dealing with the exact same issue after all these deaths and all this time. THEY have the money from drugs and our allies have not close to what they need to fight this fight effectively and crush these murderers.
All the while, Taliban Jack and Taliban Harry and Nancy and Taliban Clinton and Kennedy and Kerry continue to blather inanities and political rhetoric for political gain. ... and our best and brightest get sent to fight a fight with one hand tied behind them.
If we do not we risk a repeat of history, wherein our allies in Afghanistan and Iraq are hampered in the fight and we lose great benefit in this worldwide vital struggle.
We simply cannot afford these fools.. to continue to suffer the likes of Taliban Jack, the libs and ndp in this country and the democrats on the far left ( looks like the entire dem party now)is to hamper our efforts to put this conflict behind us.

And to remember that in our own society we pay a high price for all those 'free injection sites' that somehow gives validity to the drug trade by their very existence.

Sad to say another large attack on North Amercia may still not open the eyes of those in denial.
This is a WAR that we will battle for years to come. Both internaly (against the NDP/LIBERALS/DEMOCRATS in Canada & U.S.) and externaly.

The solution to the problem of drugs funding religious fanatics is very simple. Become the main buyer of the opium. Infiltrate the whole system by becoming the big dogs. The growers will owe their allegence to us not the warlords or the Taliban. Once the system is controlled by the West as customers we can influence what they grow with our buying power. For growers it is all about making a living.....If they are only making an average of $250 dollars a year and there are only 4 million of them then by spending only $2 billion dollars a year would double their income. What we do with the opium would be up for discusion but by taking it out of the hands of the warlords and the Islamic fanatics it would cutout a lot of their financing and a lot of their support.. By becoming a major source of opium it would be a lot easier for the west to infiltrate organized crime............In a lawless land people gravitate to the strongest dog. If we are not the big dog then we will never win the hearts and minds of all the little dogs. In a lawless land only strength is respected. Own the growers and you own the turf. It is what tribalism is all about.

If the Canadian government became the main source of illicit drugs in our country the profits would pay for the war against the terroists. The same would hold for the U.S.. Imagine drug addicts paying for the war... what a concept.

Truthsayer: If we are permitted to ignore the "evil", bad messaging, etc. that would come from your approach, I would think your approach is a perfectly practical approach. The government should be "cruel to be kind" and become the grower, distributer and seller of illegal narcotics...undercutting the price of the criminals, thus knocking them out of business. Ah, it is to dream...

Unfortunately, that is a solution that government would NEVER take (and probably rightly so for the numerous unintended consequences). But still...

Living in Vancouver I am subject to endless praises about the injection site.
The lies , mis-truths and deceptions about it are repeated ad-nauseum by the media as if factual.
One example is the stats on overdoses. Proud that of all the ODs at the site there are no deaths, this is quoted as if no other OD deaths are taking place elsewhere in Vanacouver. The number of ODs in Vancouver has gone up as more junkies move here from the rest of Canada.
The streets have not been cleaned up as needles are still strewn everywhere and dealers hang out around the site.
Maybe the reason for keeping the site for another year is to get some real statistics.

Beneath the breast of every NDP beats the heart of a little Taliban.

"Beneath the breast of every NDP beats the heart of a little Taliban."

Hilarious. Here's what happened to the last individual who thought defaming patriotic Canadians was "fair":

Sid Ryan sues for millions over election scandal

Resident claimed NDP candidate had links to terrorist organization
www.durhamregion.com/dr/regions/top_stories/story/3674173p-4247485c.html

And here's what happened to the last individual who made death threats against patriotic Canadians:

"Since the passage of Resolution 50 by the membership of CUPE Ontario, Mr.
Ryan has been the target of calls for his murder and death threats.
"As we remember those who were killed on 9/11, we must protect ourselves
from charges of being terrorists. Somehow it has become acceptable to call
your political opponents a terrorist if it suits you. Those are dangerous and
damaging words and I will fight for the democracy we have come to cherish in
this country - and our freedom to express political opinions that may differ
from others."
Today, I have instructed my lawyer to determine the identity of the
person running the blog that calls for my murder. I am not going to sit back
and tolerate these tactics any longer. We are serving notice that we will
prosecute."

Tick Bob Tick

Damn. Imagine how much money George Bush could make if he followed Syd Ryan's example!

taliban jack and dippers have shown themselves for what they really are and the only people that give them any notice are ctv's cross eyed craig oliver and the loonie left.
lets send taliban jack and craig a one way ticket to reason with the taliban and we will be rid of them for sure...they will find that the rules in afganistan are quite different.

oil,oil,oil....blah,blah,blah....it costs them about 5 bucks a barrell, it costs us how much????it is the oil that keeps these fantatical islamic states afloat...and it is the reason we do not bomb them back to the stone age....which would not take much, by the way..so let's encourage the use of nuclear power to process the black gold in alberta and defeat the enemy where it hurts most...their fleets of mercedes

Jack isn't poll surfing he's poll dancing...ugghh!

It is being reported that another NDP MP has broken ranks with Taliban Jack.
The Hill Times is reporting that Manitoba's Pat Martin has come out & said he disagrees with Taliban Jack & supports Why & What our troops are doing over there.
Is this the beginning of the end?, First Stoffer, Now Pat Martin. Will Jack kick them out when the hill resumes? Will they sit as Ind.?
Stay tuned could be interesting.

Bring home our troops and replace them with NDP lawyers.
The Taliban could never withstand that kind of assault.
They would surrender after the first week after thousands die from splitting a gut laughing.

We have seen a pandemic break lose lately. It appears to only affect a limited percentage of the population. The researchers working on this have labeled it Leftis-Lostus. The main symptom is a loss of nerve connections from the brain to the vocal cords. Fortunately it is easy to diagnose, if a member of the 'Left' is talking, he/she most likely has the disease.

Who the hell is syd ryan? Not that I really care....

Jack "Taliban" Layton has a mutiny in the NDP. More are cuttin'n'runnin.

Time for a ceasefire, Jack; negotiate, Jack; bring 'em home to the NDP bosom, Jack.

Resign, Jack. Resign, before the knives in your back make you look like an ole porcupine.

Frost Hits The Rhubarb | The long shadow of radicalism at the NDP convention

Poor Jack Layton. He tries so hard to appear moderate. Most of the time, by muzzling his caucus, he can control any bozo eruptions, like “Let’s invite Sheik Nasrallah to open the conference.” However, the rank and file delegates had had enough of Jack’s sandblasted PR wishy-washyness. No, it was time to mount the barracades and march shoulder-to-shoulder with the true democrats–Castro, Morales and Chavez. Layton would be Lenin’s clone if you pasted a goatee on him, but the smash-the-state laddies knew he was an imposter. It was true socialism’s time to reign. The Globe and Mail reporter on scene, Bill Curry, stated that the majority of the committee recommendations were hard left. There were committees that called for positive recognition of the aforementioned threesome. Others wanted the workers to rise up and take control of private businesses. That the state should nationalize railways and all other transportation systems was a given. It was the strong support for those measures that caused a prized candidate to quit the party. Paul Summerville was the former chief economist for RBC Dominion Securities, who ran under the NDP banner in Toronto. Here finally, was a top drawer economist, who would sanction NDP spending polices. Unfortunately, he couldn’t stomach the anti-capitalist message that the party was sending out. A prominent Quebec NDP candidate criticized Layton’s mealy-mouthed stance on key issues. Another top Quebec candidate, Carl Hetu, denounced Layton for neglecting Quebec since the last election. He also has resigned from the party. ...-

Interesting indeed. I don't know much about Stoffer but Martin is an NDP anomaly - a hard assed trade unionist who has actually worked for a living. He supported fellow Winnipeger, Bill Blaikie in the effort to stop Layton and his lace curtain socialists from taking control of the party.

The beginning of a major split? In'sh Allah.

Could this be the beginning of a unite the lunatic left with the uber left movement 2-3 years down the line?

Taliban Jack:
I think you are going to see more following the "Yellow Brick Road out of the Land of Oz". This is just the tip of the iceberg, But where will they go, Over to their Kissing Cousins? who knows afterall one of there own is running for leader.

A tidbit/bite/snip from Paul Summerville's blog. Paul says women have babies, don't ya know. Profoundis in extremis.

His "Unfinished Transformation" is unfinished.

(I) The Unfinished Transformation
Submitted by paul on Mon, 2006-01-09 04:55. The Unfinished Transformation

Simply, despite a half century of transformation with respect to women’s equality, our society has yet to design social policy that helps to manage the impact of first, the biological reality that it is women that have babies, and second, the cultural expectation that women are mostly responsible for the education, health, economic, and social outcomes of their children. ...-

Snowbunnie, there is presently only ONE so-called 'safe' injection site in N.America(remember though, there is absolutely NOTHING 'safe' about injecting heroin). As a Vancouverite I am disgusted with this enabling of drug use.Despite all the partisan screams of outrage at Harper for considering ending funding for this,no other mayor seems to consider it worthy of trying in THEIR city. What a fraud.

Hassle said...
"Unfortunately, that is a solution that government would NEVER take (and probably rightly so for the numerous unintended consequences). But still..."

Hassle, have you completely fallen for political correctness and forgotten that government regulated alcohol is one of the most harmful drugs we have in society?

Also,re:Taliban Jack(man that name just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it)
TJL has ALWAYS been an unapologetic opportunist for his cause.Although a devout socialist,he epitomises to me everything I detest about western politicians in general. His hardcore partisanship makes libs and cons look like undecideds. His ability to lie while looking an interviewer in the eye is unparalled. His ignorance of his own hypocrisy is legendary. His spreading of misinformation is simply dangerous.

'Taliban jack'

That is just too funny.

TJ and is communist coke-pimping flunkies are so baked-out on injection-site smack they couldn't 411 reality if it was licking their nine.

Bob,
Why always with the legal smack-down talk when you neo-socialist enablers are confronted with the truth? The truth is beautiful, set it free....

O.T. There is a new book out re Al Q's path to 9/11. It is basically a physcological profile of all the terrorists, and those that are being brainwashed into the movement. Interesting, and all the lefties and charter supporters will go crazy with the conclusions drawn. It claims that these men, as boys, were ignored, picked on, bullied, because of their sexual orientation. They hate women. Many have feminist traits. So, will the next mantra be, not all muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are muslim and not all homosexuals blow up planes and are suicide bombers, but all bombers etc are homosexual. Title of the book, The Looming Tower. I am prepared for the attack from the moonbats. Just can't tell the truth without them calling you bigoted, backward and a neandrathrol. They can spread hate and poison with their keyboard, just don't give them facts.

Of course Pat Martin of Winnipeg Centre is backing away from layton's comments...because winnipeg centre is a riding with a high presence of military personnel....what, you didn't think an NDP member was motivated by a love for pacifism, did you?

Jack Bin Layton?

JACK...Bin LayDown?

Canadian Observer: I was just musing, CO...and I am not swayed by political correctness. I do recognize its use and power and am forced to practice it at times, though.

Despite the abuse that often happens, alcohol CAN be taken in moderation and CAN be shown to be mostly harmless (and some studies show helpful) to the body....I don't believe the same can be said for heroin. I can't imagine heroin could ever be made legal in any country...alcohol, yes. I recognize your complaint against the demon booze, though.

How many criminals sell homemade liquor in Canada? None? How many criminals sell heroin? Many? If the government sold it at cut-rate costs, the criminals wouldn't be in business...but one of the unintended consequences I was alluding to is that the criminals currently selling heroin would just move to a different crime.

Anyone who thinks free injection sites help the enemy is dead wrong. The heroin provided at these sites is legally obtained from a pharmaceutical source, NOT the Afghani drug trade. If posters would bother to do simple research, they would find that prohibition NEVER works. Providing this site is not enabling, because an iv addict will inject regardless of the condition around himself. It simply, and very importantly, reduces the risk of this behaviour to all society. Of course, abstinence is the ultimate goal for all addiction workers. For the record, I treat opiate addicts, but I am not involved in any way with safe injection sites.

I think Mike S has a good point if he is correct about the Safe injection sites providing the dope.

But I believe that the sites only provide supervision and free needles!
The drugs are brought by the users and are the street drugs distributed by organized criminals world wide.

I say it's Darwin in action -- let it work. Why should tax-payers subsidize heroin addiction by providing any related services? It's stupid.
