UPDATE - Sylvain Larocque explains in the comments;

Hello everyone,

I don't want to hide, but it was actually a translation mistake. The original story can be found

Thanks for the clarification, Sylvain.

That explains how the MSM keeps coming up with descriptions of terror suspects being Asian in appearance.

What I find really surprising is the G.G.'s support of our troops/mission in Afghanistan.

I think Sylvain Larocque refered to Afghanistan as being in the Middle East because "Middle East" sounds so, you know, "anti-Bushian".

The real story here, though, is Michaelle Jean's express support for our mission in in Afghanistan. To me, that's a highly welcome and unexpected statement, especially coming from such an emotional person who's attended all those funerals for Canadian soldiers. I quite respect her for seeing the larger picture, and for going against the grain, as it were.

That's funny.

No Afghanistan. That's odd. It's a country. No doubt.

But what isn't odd to me is that "Palestine" doesn't appear, either. There's Israel, of course, a real country, but no "Palestine". Wonder why? Because "Palestine" only exists in the imagination. It isn't real.

Actually, the entire M.E. is in Asia, since Europe/Asia splits at the Bosphorus in Turkey.

"What I find really surprising is the G.G.'s support of our troops/mission in Afghanistan."

"I quite respect her [the Governor General]for seeing the larger picture, and for going against the grain, as it were."

Um, supporting Canada's policy in Afghanistan and our troops is not an option for the Governor General, folks.

If she did not support our policy or our soldiers, she would have no choice but to resign forthwith.

She represents our Head of State, the Queen, and is she is Commander-in-Chief of our armed forces.

The policies of the duly elected government are therefore ipso facto her policies.

For those who might have skipped their civics lessons, we call this concept "constitutional monarchy."

Oops!

Sorry, Kate. Finger problems.

Also, flicking over to my Francophone persona for a moment, all I could think when I read "Sylvain Larocque, correspondent parlementaire" was how nicely that rhymes with "bouffon extraordinaire."

Not fair. For starters, who gets to define "Middle East". Afghanistan might be in in some definitions fro earlier times, while Iran might be "Central Asia" in some of its history.
Thirdly, Egypt is in any definition that does not follow crude continental geography.

*Once named: The Liberal Party of Canada.

I think the Govt should send the GG to Afghanistan, perhaps then, since it is her intent to actually see the reconstruction taking place, the MSM would have to acknowledge that the words "Provincial Reconstruction Team" do not equal agressive invading army.

I haven't the slightest doubt that the Governor General won't, at some point, visit HER troops.

Michaelle Jean's support of Afganistan never surprised me. Her past ought to make it clear that she should despise what terror gangs do to good people whether it be in Afganistan or Haiti.

In our flighty la'belle province Michaelle's stand will be noticed by many who couldn't be bothered to open their ears to a conservative. Her voice helps to shore up the left flank of the Afganistan mission. It's now harder for people like Taliban Jack to keep up the bluff with their weak hands.

More figure problems!

(What a day!)

I meant, of course, that the GG WILL indeed probably visit the troops in theatre at some point.

Those are the perqs!

There is an ominous message in this commentary. ...-

What if?

With national attention focused on Iraq and Afghanistan, CNN describes US Naval wargames featuring Iran as the notional enemy. "The first message was routine enough: a 'Prepare to Deploy Order' sent through Naval communications channels to a submarine, an Aegis-class cruiser, two minesweepers and two minehunters. The orders didn't actually command the ships out of port .... but until now largely theoretical, prospect has become real: that the U.S. may be preparing for war with Iran." That dramatic beginning introduces a discussion of how dangerous war with Iran might be, yet how few the diplomatic prospects for reducing the tension are.

Readers might be forgiven for objecting that Iran has no east coast. It's entirely landlocked by Afghanistan and Pakistan on the east, though it does have an extensive southern coast which runs all the way from the Shatt al Arab to the Indian ocean, a route along which much of the world's tanker traffic must pass or sail near. But we get the point. Any conflict with Iraq [sic]* will involve, at the minimum, naval action threatening the chief oil artery of the planet. ...-

*Should this be: Iran?

could someone clue me in on what i'm missing here.
whats the point in the map?

OK, if that's the middle east, or mideast, what does 'middle' mean? Middle of what? The east? Are there also areas known as the west east and the east east? I'm guessing we call the east east the 'far east', and the west east the 'near east' although I don't remember any usage of the latter. From where I live, it's easier to get to the far east by travelling west. Can we call it the far west instead? (I actually didn't think there could be anything farther west than Alberta, but then there's B.C.! WTF?!)

According to Wikipedia, the G8 definition of the Middle East includes Afghanistan. Even the traditional definition includes Egypt, which isn't in the game map.

Sorry Kate, I think you're getting a bit pedantic, or you are in my mind being too obscure for a Monday. Is your point that Sylvain Larocque is wrong, or that the quiz is incorrect? Perhaps I'm missing the point as well. Please clarify.

I guess this could be just another sad commentary on pitifull state of our educational system.
On the other hand it's interesting to note that observations and conclusions made by our lib/left commenters seem to miss the point entirely.

Thanks Nemo2 for yet another map. And what do you know, there's a map of the near east, too, that includes Morocco, which is farther west than most of Europe.

The last sentence in the description is very apt:

"We attempt here to show the modern definition, but in world of geography, there are often many answers or (personal or political opinions) to what appears to be a simple question"

British Columbia is the West. Ontario is the middle east and the maritimes is the far east.Did I win?Is there a contest?

One Picture as they say is worth a thousand words. Thanks Kate. Made my day.

Ontario is pretty far east for my tastes wally. It's like the old T-shirt my buddy printed up one day: "Everybody east of Lloydminister is a Newfie"

I can't never spell nothin east of med'cn hat
