They were "gunmen" who were "shouting religious slogans". A Syrian government official is willing to speculate as to their Muslim terrorist motives, but the wires are (a) sticking with the non-offensive non-terrorist label and (b) take no notice of what religion the religious slogans were from. Could be any religion, really. Didn't Debka publish something recently about how US HUMINT has picked up a lot of fundamentalist Unitarian unrest in the region lately?

Did anyone else catch the attempted hatchet job on "Path to 9-11" by the (Chicago Sun-Times?) reviewer who appeared on Charles Adler last week? One suspects his motivations went beyond artistic considerations.
Add your own in the comments.

Indeed. With the toning down of the negative Clinton info and with the end info about the mostly poor/failing grades given to the government's efforts on security, you felt that the overall result was a higher negative Bush-side than Clinton-side.
I had given up US MSM (including even Fox) so got suckered again, despite thinking the overall production was exceptionally good.
OT: Does everyone find themselves trying to imagine Dem reaction to a film portraying the fictional assassination of Clinton, Kerry or Howard Dean? Unimaginable, eh? One swoons over the sheer callousness of such a film considering the emotional effect it would have on Bush's family and close friends.

I don't recall any attempts by the Bush supporters to get Moores film banned. If Bush was ever asassinated the world would react in the same manner when Kennedy was. Would not be good for the democrats in 2008. At least the msm and leftists and talibanjack party could not blame it on Bush. In fact they would fall all over themselves blaming each other.
An enthralling movie with a distinct Right-wing tilt, shown commercial free, and interrupted only by George Bush's Presidential address...
Talk about an obvious hit.

For mostly economic reasons, Japan must open itself to other ethnicities. Japan's population is not only aging rapidly, but starting to decline. By the year 2050, it is expected to fall from 128 million now to around 105 million. To keep the economy viable, experts say, the country must let in more immigrants—not just guest workers, but foreign-born naturalized citizens. A government panel acknowledged that in a report this summer, while at the same time recommending that the foreign percentage of the total population not exceed 3 percent, roughly double what it is now.

Wafa Sultan
A Daring Voice Calls For a New Islam
By ASRA Q. NOMANI
SUBSCRIBE TO TIMEPRINTE-MAILMORE BY AUTHOR
Posted Sunday, Apr. 30, 2006
As a writer-activist who has fought for the rights of Muslim women, I thought I knew my fellow bad girls of Islam. But Wafa Sultan, 47, has given new meaning to the word bad. A psychiatrist in Syria before transplanting to Southern California in 1989 with her family, she gave an interview with al-Jazeera a couple of months ago that made her a household name in the Islamic world. "The clash we are witnessing around the world is ... a clash between a mentality that belongs to the Middle Ages and another that belongs to the 21st century," she said. "It is a clash between freedom and oppression."
The interview raced across the Internet and landed Sultan in the New York Times and Los Angeles Times and on CNN. I connected with her anger and pain. She questioned Islam in 1979, when, she says, she witnessed the murder of a professor by men with alleged ties to the ultraconservative Muslim Brotherhood political group. I challenged Islamic traditions after my friend and former colleague Daniel Pearl was murdered in 2002. Both killings were punctuated with "Allah is great." We have differences: Sultan blames Islam; I blame Muslims. But we both believe the Muslim world is in the Dark Ages.
Sultan's influence flows from her willingness to express openly critical views on Islamic extremism that are widely shared but rarely aired by other Muslims. She hopes to publish a book and start a foundation to take the politics out of Islam and "change the mentality of Muslim people." She plans to continue speaking out in Arabic to try to free Muslims from "brainwashing." "I even don't believe in Islam," she says, "but I am a Muslim." By so sharply voicing her beliefs, Sultan crystallizes the mission for the rest of us who want to take the slam out of Islam.
If you have a chance, watch Nancy Wood's opening story on The National. It's ostensibly about the deployment of a hundred or so Quebec troops to Afghanistan, but actually a gratuitous Bush=Harper slur.
She sprews partisan-excited speculations about casualties to come for these Quebec soldiers, punching up her blithe little desecrating "forecast" with a shot of a flag-draped coffin being carried.
Count the number of times that Bush is refered to -- six? -- in a story that has nothing to do with the Bush administration. Note how they bring on some "expert" to call Harper "George Bush Junior" and to state that he even acts like George Bush when he talks.
It's dirty campaigning by lib-bureaucrat journalists, just that straight.
Watch Nancy Woods' piece if you can. Just appalling.
'Assassination' director deceived White House ('Death of a President')
WND ^ | September 12, 2006
The maker of a controversial movie that portrays President Bush as an assassination victim admits he hid his true intentions from White House officials in order to film footage of the commander in chief on a visit to Chicago. Gabriel Range, the 32-year-old British director of "Death of a President," told the Los Angeles Times his crew received official White House press credentials by proving they were affiliated with Britain's Channel 4, which will air the film this fall. ...- free republic
More from Range, the poseur, the faker, the phony:
"The fake documentary is an incredibly powerful way of exploring possible futures, but it poses a very different set of challenges to making a real documentary or straight drama.
As in any contemporary history documentary, the backbone of our film is made up of interviews, in which people describe events in the past tense, which itself lends a degree of pathos and credibility."

NDP candidate fights back
Liberal criticisms of sermons 'attack on my faith', DiNovo says
By ANTONELLA ARTUSO, Sun Media
NDP candidate Cheri DiNovo says Liberal criticism of her sermons is an “attack” on her integrity, family and position as a United Church minister.
Voters in Parkdale-High Park head to the polls Thursday to chose a successor to Gerard Kennedy, the popular Liberal cabinet minister who resigned to run for the party’s federal leadership.
Liberal candidate Sylvia Watson’s campaign issued a press release this week that questioned DiNovo’s “values,” quoting from a sermon posted online that compares the media’s treatment of Karla Homolka to the persecution of Jesus Christ.
A second Liberal press release today demands that DiNovo “come clean” on her public acknowledgement of drug involvement in her youth and her published comment that pedophiles and axe murderers could be ordained “if the request comes from God.”

50th Anniversary of the Computer Disk Drive
Wednesday, September 13, 2006, is the 50th anniversary of the first shipped computer disk drive, the IBM RAMAC 350. For those of you who are interested, I've written up a little essay with some lore, some numbers, and lots of pretty pictures, over at:
sagaciousiconoclast.blogspot.com/2006/09/50th-anniversary-of-computer-disk.html
I'm not sure whether this qualifies as a comment or not. It does not address any of the aforementioned items, so conceivably it is out of place, and please feel free to delete it if I'm popping off where I shouldn't be.
Old timers will know that I have often commented about the fact that no one, to my knowledge, ever found out who was at the big Bonanno family sitdown in Canada when Alphonso Gagliano was outed as a made member.
I still don't. However, I think I know why they were getting together.
It's hard to know where to start in the lethal and labyrinthine machinations of the mob, so I will simply start here.
Carmine (The Snake) Galante got whacked. As Bonanno family boss, he had only been out of the pen a couple of months. I won't bother with the reasons for it, except that it did have tendrils in Canada and was probably connected with the old "French connection" heroin route. (Carmine was keeping the money for himself... bad move.)
When a boss gets whacked with the full go-ahead from the Commission, there are always members on both sides of the loyalty. And you know a lot of people are going to go down, because in the outfit it's not like politics where you solve all your problems with lies and a tap dance.
Rusty Rastelli was going to be the new boss. Rusty had a lot of support, some of whom were Sally Farrugia, consiglierri Steve Cannone, captains "Sonny Black", "Napolitano" and "Joe Massino." Against Rusty were captains Cesar Bonventre (who may have been one of the zips bodyguarding Carmine who stepped back to let the hit go down), Phillip "Philly Lucky" Giaccone, Dominick "Big Trin" Trinchera, and Alphonse "Sonny Red" Indelicato, and his son Anthony.
All these guys were very powerful players in the Bonanno family struggle about who's for and against Rusty. In retrospect I think we can already see the foreshadowing of the fact that Vito Rizzuto was also a Rastelli loyalist.
For some time the FBI has been trying to extradite Vito from Canada because he is said to be part of the hit team that whacked out "Sonny Red" Indelicato and a bunch of other anti-Rastelli soldiers who were backing another horse.
"Sonny Black" Napolitano was a rapidly rising in the Rastelli faction, widely viewed to be destined for great things.
After Vito, "Sonny Black" (both capos)and other members of the crew whacked out "Sonny Red" and a bunch of the other mentioned made guys who presented threats to their leadership, I believe some ambassadors were appointed to go around and let everybody know what the new power structure was.
I think that the big sitdown in Canada (that almost certainly would have placed Alphonso and Vito in the same room at the same time with a bunch of other Canadian capos and soldiers) was to let everybody know who the new CEO was and how the chain of command was working.
You've seen all those movies -- the table's laden with Italian cuisine, a couple of dozen guys or more all dressed in suits with lapels you could use to shave with. The festive glasses raised, the new leadership ratified.
I think Vito bought himself an even more renowned and honored seat at the table, because if the FBI is correct he was invited by the boss-elect to participate in the wipeout. This not only would be an honor and a sign of trust, but also would suggest the level of power, authority and esteem by which other members should see him.
You know, these guys don't recognize American/Canadian borders. They all just live in one great big episode of Smallville, where Americans and Canadians dwell in harmony for the good of the Bonanno crime family.
So, in conclusion, I now think that the big sitdown in Canada, the detail about which everyone is so silent, was a big Bonanno family celebration and annunciation of the new authority and the new pecking order.
Ciao.

Rex Murphy was superb tonight on The National, talking about "conspiracy theories," and wondering why anyone would give them "oxygen." I hope that Evan Soloman was listening.
Amongst the many hyper-articulate things Murphy had to say was that people who would think that President George W. Bush and his officials were responsible for the deaths of thousands of their own citizens, with no reference to Osama Bin Laden or Al-Qaeda, must be "allergic to reality."
That's what ET's been saying. And that's what I've been thinking, too. The mantra of these eedjits is "Don't confuse me with the facts." 'Problem is: There are far too many of these diseased people.
Me too gl1800 ... thanks for that link to the Wafa Sultan vid! I had seen it before but it was just as powerful second time around. I've forwarded it to some liberal friends and family.

UN Security Council wants NATO ISAF strengthened--from the UN News Centre:
"Security Council approves extension of security force’s mandate in Afghanistan"
www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=19804&Cr=afghan&Cr1=
I wonder how much play this is the story will get in the Canadian media:
"In a unanimously adopted resolution, Council members also called on UN Member States to contribute greater personnel, equipment and funding so that the force can be more effective."
Full text of resolution here:

And even the anti-Western Non-Aligned Movement, at their current summit in Havana, can--unlike the NDP--support the Kabul government and call the Taliban "terrorists" (at very end of story):

"In Cuba, a summit of countries of the Non-Aligned Movement issued a draft closing statement expressing support for Kabul and their "profound" concern over "terrorist groups including former Taliban" in the south and east of Afghanistan."

Re Me No Dhimmi's reaction to the film at the Toronto Film Festival depicting President G.W. Bush's assassination: "One swoons over the sheer callousness of such a film considering the emotional effect it would have on Bush's family and close friends": I am outraged that such a film has been made let alone shown at the TIFF.
And his sentiments are mine exactly. I've been asking my husband, "How would any of them--the director, the actors, the producers, the callous viewers, some of whom will cheer, no doubt--feel about a film showing the assassination of someone they love? Why are they making such a film? I hope there aren't any copy-cat attempts in real life."
If I lived in Toronto, I thought of turning up with some kind of placard, objecting to this pernicious depiction of the imaginary-for-profit assassination death of a living person, who happens to be a world leader.
It is despicable.
TIFF participants should boycott it. Yeah, sure.
Awwhhh..the Yamaha FJR1300.....a good trainer bike before you move up to a GL1800 :):):)
Good looking bike that Yamaha.
Terry, you are so wrong but lets hope we never have to find out. And, don't be too surprised or upset if the Repulicans hold onto the congress and senate in november. They have to win six senate seats and not lose any, and win 15 in congress and not lose any. It is a bad time for incumbants of both parties. And with photo ID in some states a lot of felons will not be able to vote, or illegals. Should be an interesting night, watching the anchors with long faces aka 2004. And if by chance the dems win, and set policy, what will all the anti american bush haters rant about. And, the world would mourn an assasination, if only to save face.
and CBCpravda just drones on and on. I'll take the post at CBC , Stephen , let me be the one to pull the plug.
The decision could have political consequences, with Quebec consistently polling as the province with the lowest support for Canada's military presence in Afghanistan.
Jean-Marc Léger of Léger Marketing said one of the reasons is that many in Quebec see Prime Minister Stephen Harper as too often following the lead of U.S. President George W. Bush.
"They don't appreciate that Stephen Harper sent people," he added. "But also if someone in their French community dies, the sentiment will be really worse.
"He will lose votes, he will lose ground in Quebec."
a real report would say Quebec cant pull its weight in the military or the confederation.
One wonders if those responsible for Death of a President would really be all that upset if someone were to take the initiative put forward in their "film". I mean how offensive is it to actually make a film about assinating a sitting President?
The purpose of the movie seems to have been little more than making a snuff film for a very particular set of deviants. Pornography for whacked-out, delusional, Bush-haters arounds the world to masturbate to.
Maybe watching the movie will hold off the appetites of the lunitics who wish Bush dead, just long enough for him to finish his term in office. Or, maybe it will just radicalize an already unstable group of people suffering from Bush derangment syndrom. We'll see I guess
Mary,
If the Dems win the anti-American Bush haters will control Congress. You give them way too much credit. They are as nuts as their leader, the Vermonster (who BTW suggested Bush was behind 9/11). I take them, as I take al Qaeda, at their word. They would weep only for the cameras.
They wouldn't weep for the cameras. They would be cheering in the streets, that is how deranged they are.
We can thank the likes of Armitage, who kept quiet, Colin Powell, who also kept quiet and let Fitzgerald run up a 22 million dollar bill trying to prosecute someone for a non-crime. Joe Wilson, Valerie Plame and those 'shadow' CIA who wanted to undermine the Bush administration from day one. They hate it that anyone but a clintonite is in the White House and are rabid about it until they gain the White House again. They should all be treated like the rabid dogs they are and be put out of their misery: Republican Congress, Senate majorities and Rudy G or someone like him in the WH in 2008...that would put them over the edge and with Bush out of the WH, having put in his full two terms, we could look forward to another 8 with Rudy or Newt or someone with as much smarts and moxie as either of those two.
THAT combo would be powerful enough to send them off the edge, hopefully forever.... they must never get close to the power switch again until we have this terrorist thing behind us for good.
Can you imagine the howls? Ha... and then Stephen gets a majority in Canada and we might even make some progress towards a better society without all these distractions.
They don't even pull this sorta crap in Russia and China anymore:
Air Force chief: Test weapons on testy U.S. mobs
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Nonlethal weapons such as high-power microwave devices should be used on American citizens in crowd-control situations before being used on the battlefield, the Air Force secretary said Tuesday.
edition.cnn.com/2006/US/09/12/usaf.weapons.ap/index.html
Ladies and gentlemen, America's claim to being a civilized democracy grows more tenuous by the hour. The tiny minority of lost souls who still support Bush are enemies of America, enemies of freedom, and enemies of democracy.
Non-lethal weapons have been used by police departments for ages.
Probably the first non-lethal weapon was the nightstick. Whack somebody in the knee, presto. Pain compliance.
Non-lethal weapons should have been used in Caledonia.
Democrats hate Bush, but that is old news.
Conservatives are angry at Bush because of inactivity in respect to closing the southern border. Conservatives have no problems with the war or the way it is being conducted.
Senator Santorum's remarks were doubtlessly calculated to massage the voters with liberal sensibilities in his state.
A lot of concern has been generated about US involvement in the Mid-East. Whether it's good, bad, right, or wrong.
The thing you have to be concerned with is the fact that it is strategic.
It puts us right in the middle of the Mid-East with a huge complement of military force and gives us a reason to keep them there.
No one in the Mid-East doubts America's capacity anymore to wage war and depose dictators. If they had any doubts, they once again realize that we're a bunch of bad dudes.
With Canada in Afghanistan along with our forces and our people in Iraq, we can threaten Iran along two borders and pour as many assets as we wish into that country anytime and anyhow we want. That's bad mojo for them.
The film was utterly dispicable, but that's about what you can expect from those people.
the "myths" of 9/11 being circulated by the left...

DOG EATS PRESLEY TEDDY BEAR
Watch your dog or cat or even your pet cougar. A guard dog at a London children's museum tore up a collection of valuable, rare teddy bears. Most famous was one owned by Elvis Presley that was just on loan. The Doberman chewed up hundreds of bears in the $900,000 collection. All pets with teeth are a problem for collectors. We once watched a chained pet cougar chew the foot off an 18th-century American Chippendale chair worth over $20,000. We were surprised that the owner was amused.
What a bad doggy. I just finished reading "Life With Marley, the Worlds Worst Dog". It was a very good book and illustrates how crazy in love people can be with a "bad" dog.

Former Iranian President Mohammed Khatami advocates a dialogue between civilizations, and Harvard defended its controversial decision to give him the prominent forum of the Kennedy School invitation because of the importance of the free exchange of ideas.
Yet Khatami evidently cannot tolerate dialogue within a civilization, i.e., free and open discourse within Iran; and Harvard has given a forum of freedom to freedom's enemy.
This became painfully evident in a detail of the exchange following his speech. An Iranian in the audience questioned him about an egregious case of the suppression of free speech: the arrest, rape and murder of Canadian-Iranian journalist Zahra Kazemi. ...
[Khatami said] "Maybe if the relatives of Kazemi had not made into such a big political issue it could have been resolved a lot quicker and more to their liking." READ MORE (link here) ...-

Al-Qaeda from the inside out
Lawrence Wright traces the intellectual history of al-Qaeda in a marvellous article for the New Yorker. The view looking out from within al-Qaeda is completely different from the standard narrative provided by the newspapers. We learn about a man who converted Bin Laden to Salafism and who later accused him of leading the Jihad to catastrophe -- a man who is in US custody. Wright describes the pivotal role of Afghanistan in creating a place for Jihad to train and formulate its plans, and why September 11 is regarded by some Islamic radicals as a complete mistake.

BMW drivers get the girls
And no wonder. BMW equates to sexy, smart and expensive.
Last summer I met an LA based call girl service operator who was taking a holiday on nearby Denman Island. His wheels were BMW. His girlfriend was a raven haired Nicole type, if you get my drift.
http://abcnews.go.com/Business/Autos/wireStory?id=2425652
MUNICH, Germany Sep 12, 2006 (AP)— German automaker BMW AG said Tuesday it will introduce the world's first hydrogen-powered luxury performance car.
Hydrogen technology minimizes emissions of carbon dioxide. Running in the hydrogen mode, the Hydrogen 7 essentially emits nothing but vapor, BMW said.
The car's engine is powered by a 260-horsepower, 12-cylinder engine and accelerates from zero to 62.1 mph in 9.5 seconds. The top speed is limited electronically to 143 mph.
The California based Electric Tesla Motors *Roadster* is coincidentally also 260 horse power, yet the performance is even more impressive than the BMW Hydro-7. 6 seconds vs. 9.5 seconds.
The sex appeal of the BMW may well add momentum to the low emissions groundswell, and that*s good.
The days of complex piston driven engines are drawing to a close however, as people come to understand the advanced perfection and reliability of the enhanced electric motor. = TG

A phenomenal work, rock-solid historical scholarship -- solved a decades-long riddle for me, i.e., how Europe got to be so anti-Jew (using the less polite phrase) and anti-US. She did not, BTW, coin the word Eurabia. The Euro-Arab Dialogue (EAD) is no conspiracy theory -- but historical fact accomplished by elites out of fear and greed and with zero comprehension of their populace. Dhimmitude by reverse colonization!

MILITARY SHOULD FOCUS ON COAST LINE, NOT WAR:

If you wonder why it took 50 years to get the truth about Joe McCarthy, consider the fanatical campaign of the Clinton acolytes to kill an ABC movie that relies on the 9/11 Commission Report, which whitewashed only 90 percent of Clinton's cowardice and incompetence in the face of terrorism, rather than 100 percent.
Islamic jihadists attacked America year after year throughout the Clinton administration. They did everything but blow up his proverbial "bridge to the 21st century." Every year but one, Clinton found an excuse not to fight back.
The first month Clinton was in office, Islamic terrorists with suspected links to al-Qaida and Saddam Hussein bombed the World Trade Center.
For the first time ever, a terrorist act against America was treated not as a matter of national security, but exclusively as a simple criminal offense. The individual bombers were tried in a criminal court. (The one plotter who got away fled to Iraq, that peaceful haven of kite-flying children until Bush invaded and turned it into a nation of dangerous lunatics.)
In 1995 and 1996, various branches of the Religion of Peace -- al-Qaida, Hezbollah and the Iranian "Party of God" -- staged car bomb attacks on American servicemen in Saudi Arabia, killing 24 members of our military in all. Each time, the Clinton administration came up with an excuse to do nothing. ...-

Afgfhanistan,
What a formidable job Nato troops face here.
[1] Subdue the Taliban.
[2] Allow for and protect a stable government.
[3] Help that government change the ecomony from Heroine to food crop production.
Seems fair democracy and freedom never comes easily or without great cost. =TG
Slamming the Liberals regarding Kyoto comes second.
Slamming the Liberals regarding the total lack of forsight about looming job losses in the Automotive Sector is priority ONE!
14,000 jobs lost in one company [Ford] alone should have been easily forseen by the Liberals.
This is only the beginning. What groundwork have the Liberals put in place to encourage automotive advances in hybrid and alternate fuels designs and production?
What incentives and forsight did the Liberals have in place to encourage a smooth transition to new technologies in the automotive landscape?
What incentives did the Liberal government provide for lower emmission vehicles, similar to California incentives, home of the Tesla Electric car?
Surely I am in the dark and there must be small alternate fuel and electric auto manufacturing firm start-ups enjoying Liberal Party enacted incentives in Canada.
Just finished listening to an auto industry expert on the radio who states that demand for autos has never been stronger and that for every 14,000 jobs lost in Canada, there will be 14,000 jobs coming on line in other countries.
Liberal Party forsight and policies already in place will keep those jobs in Canada eh?
Or do we have to depend on Conservative rescue legislation in the upcoming session to begin addressing auto sector employment?
Another glaring failure of the LP of Canada = TG
