Jaeger, I realize that your comment was just in jest, but...you really shouldn't "make fun" of such a custom. I don't and wouldn't practice the act of kissing other men in greeting, but there is nothing necessarily wrong with that.

Now, if you could find a picture like this where the tongues were involved, that would be a different story. ;)

jaeger - I agree with Hassle. I think it's a trivial comment. Men hugging, kissing, embracing each other does NOT imply homosexuality in many ethnic groups; it's a normal act of kinship and friendship.

It's well known that Rove's father turned gay and left the family to go join a gay commune in California; what's less known is that when Karl was younger (or a "twink" in the gay vernacular) he was a reportedly a fixture at gay clubs in the super-gay Adams Morgan district of D.C. Who knew?

i'm a little off topic(though this is hardly a topic), but i was wondering about your comment about iranians ditching their president for a democratically elected leader. I don't know a whole lot about Iran, but what I have seen seems to say that Ahmadinejad won the last election fairly cleanly and fairly. I think I saw somewhere that Iran had a 60% turnout and most of Ahmadinejad got most of his support from the poorer classes. I know those facts don't necessarily mean there wasn't corruption, but it still seemed kinda interesting.

kmm - it's true that Iran holds elections, but the country is far from democratic. They have a Guadian Council that ensures only those committed to the Islamic revolution are permitted to run. It's like having an election where you can choose among candidates, but they all get selected by one party first.

They go through the motions of democracy in Iran, but violate the fundamentals.

I just looked it up, and yes they do. With the exception of the judiciary and the office of president, women can hold office.
