One of those places on the globe that always seems poised to answer when the question "How could it be worse?" is asked;
The African front line in the West's war on terrorism has collapsed as mass resignations from Somalia's fragile government have all but handed power to hard-line Islamists.Twenty senior officials quit the United Nations-backed transitional administration this week. That brought to 39 - a third of the government - the number who have abandoned the struggle to stabilise the country and ward off the threat of an Islamist regime giving succour to al-Qa'eda in east Africa.

The prospect of the wholesale collapse of Mr Gedi's government has sent shockwaves through the Horn of Africa, where many people blame a botched attempt by the United States to oppose the Islamic militia. Washington has denied that it backed a loose alliance of warlords and businessmen that opposed the militia but lost the battle for control of Mogadishu in June.
That defeat paved the way for the militia to sweep through the south of the country, imposing sharia law, closing down cinemas and banning fans from watching football.

So, the 'real reason' for the problems in Somalia is, as usual, the USA. How and why? Because the US didn't fight the Islamic militia.
Wasn't the UN there? Weren't the Somalia people there? Where's the rest of the world?
I think the Somalis might have been in Ethiopia, stirring thing up there. ;-)
Well, thank goodness. Now that those meddling neo-colonialists from the west have been tossed out, the noble black man can instill a regime of peace, civility, and prosperity.
In other news, I have a bridge for sale.
once again, the long term vision of the left has prevailed....somalia had a chance in the 90's if not for the wobbly-kneed leftists and peaceniks crying crocodile tears over the deaths of a few thugs and punks....just wait for the tub thumping and chest pounding demanding military aid......blows my mind man!
The incident that spawned the book "Blackhawk Down" was a directive to go to the center of Mogadishu and arrest the warlords. Arrest! As though they were run of the mill criminals in a civilized country. That rates right up there with the left's idea that all we need if to sit down & talk out our differences.
*sigh* I want to live in the left's version of the world. I like rainbows & unicorns too.
