I hate to sound cynical, but was Boniface promoted to Police Commissioner because she was the best candidate for the job, or because of her gender? Some of the bloggers from Ontario must know the situation here, please enlighten us. And, no, I would never suggest a woman could not do the job, I'm a big fan of capable people whatever their gender, sexual preferences, religion, color, political affiliation, etc., etc.

Now, it seems, Ireland wants her, for maybe the same reasons she was promoted in Ontario. So which is it, is she very capable, and professional, or politically correct?

They don't have "Aboriginals" in Ireland, so maybe she'll do just fine.

"Commissioner Boniface was invested into the Order of Ontario in 2001 for her work with the First Nations communities" (Wikipedia)

She's not a cop she's just another politically correct librano$$$$ politician.

If she has broken a recently signed three year contract does she leave for Ireland with a hefty severance package? It wouldn't surprise me in the least. Perhaps we will find our way back through the looking glass one day soon.

Pity the poor Irish...again...still. Another politically correct, self-promoting, Power Woman brought in to clean house. Not that there's anything wrong with cleaning house. Calgary brought in a Power Woman from the east to be the police chief, picked over career male officers who knew the force. Spent most of her time fighting with city council over her contract, lawyers were involved, she was replaced before the police force imploded.

The citizens of Caledonia are fortunate to rid of Gwen, my condolences to the Irish.

I believe the Irish are the aboriginals of Ireland, dmorris.

jeff, I thought so, too, until I looked into the long ,sordid history of "The Emerald Isle"!

People inhabited Ireland from the Stone Age, Celts arrived in the Iron Age, bloody latecomers, and proceeded to take over. Shades of Caledonia!
Then Vikings raided, plundered, (probably raped too), and stayed, in the ninth century.
"This era was interrupted in the 9th century by 200 years of intermittent warfare with waves of Viking raiders who plundered monasteries and towns. Eventually they settled in Ireland and established many towns, including the modern day cities of Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Waterford."

So as you can see, there is plenty of question as to who really owns Ireland, and Boniface may be jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

Ireland should immediately form a "Bureau of Ancestry", with DNA tests for all citizens, and nip this fomenting rebellion in the bud before Boniface has to flee to another country.

This question of "who was here first" plagues every nation. Governments should be setting up massive bureaucracies all over the world, just in case.

Saint Patrick, save us.

bonifarce people, thats boniFARCE.

I am of the firm opinion that Boniface did next to nothing in the Caledonia dispute because she knew she was on her way out.She did not want to stir the pot in an meaningful way lest it upset her move to the Irish police.God help the Irish if she ever has to take actions or create policy v/v the IRA.....

Take a look at her resume and that answers many questions.

I agree the (in)actions of the OPP in the Caledonia (sounds a lot like a BB King tune doesn't it?) was disgraceful but could it be that the commissioner was following orders?

I don't know but I wonder if maybe she isn't entirely to blame.

Y'all know, Gwen's quiet, under the radar, shuffling off to Ireland is eerily reminiscent of Chretien's quickly shooing Alfonso "Mafioso" Gagliano off to Denmark.

Is this how politicians deal with a crisis? Send their brainlessly obedient, totally ethics-deprived loyalists out of the country?

The left is extraordinarily cowardly.

Gwen Boniface actually belongs in JAIL, in my opinion. The reason is so blatantly obvious I'll just roll my eyes at anyone (a moonbat, that'd be, naturally) who claims she "did the right thing".

This whole thing is another warning sign. Canada is in deep trouble. How much worse will the next ethnically-oriented violence-and-crime crisis be?

--That makes a lot of sense to me. These leftists are all alike, more or less. It's all about their own interests, not about the interests of those they're sworn and paid by them to serve. She must be a Liebrano.

"This whole thing is another warning sign. Canada is in deep trouble"

Absolutely, CS.

"This whole thing is another warning sign. Canada is in deep trouble"

Totally, CS.

Kursk: "I am of the firm opinion that Boniface did next to nothing in the Caledonia dispute because she knew she was on her way out.She did not want to stir the pot in an meaningful way lest it upset her move to the Irish police."

Canadian Sentinel : "That makes a lot of sense to me. These leftists are all alike, more or less. It's all about their own interests, not about the interests of those they're sworn and paid by them to serve. She must be a Liebrano."

This exactly reminds me of the incompetents who run public education: There are some good administrators but they're very few and very far between. Most of the incompetents are lefties too. (I guess that's because one pretty well has to be a leftie to make it to the top.) Whenever they get in trouble and are totally exposed for the paid nincompoops they are, they get shuffled off to another position to harass personnel and make a mess of another school or department. It's not unbelieveable, but it sure is reprehensible. Accountability? What's that?

dmorris: "This whole thing [Gwen Boniface fiasco] is another warning sign. Canada is in deep trouble"

We sure are.

P.S. Another sign: In today's Internet Globe and Mail poll, only 26% support Canada's role in Afghanistan. 74% are against. (I'm delighted I cancelled my subscription last week. I didn't even notice the G & M was missing today--the first Saturday in over 30 years!)

Please consider googling the G & M and voting in their poll.

...you know, I wonder what we'll be thinking a year from now when we hear 'Caledonia'?

Will it be some deep scar in OPP and Canada's memory that brings soap and need of mouthwash even speaking it, or does it become a watershed where the rational, conservative thinkers give Political Correct types the heave ho from their ivory towers, or do we crumble back into a lethargic Liberal voting pattern again not wanting to rock the boat?

"Take a look at her resume and that answers many questions"

Geezzz...a grand total of FIVE years operational policing. I cannot count the number of times I've seen that situation in the RCMP and other forces...people who slide up the ranks with virtually no clue about the core functions of policing. It's to weep.

dmorris
... as you talk about administrators in education, I hope you are including principals, superintendents, and the "think tank" (the invisible group behind the curriculum and all that is taught in schools, selection of text books etc..)

Yes,Most of the good ones don't make it upwards - they are not prepared to play the politcial correct, yes siree/m'am games and either remain teaching or leave early.

Not so long ago, mention of phonics in Language Arts was virtually a heresy but time has prevailed. Now it is often referred to as the blended approach because the "whole language" approach was a very bad experiment. At least some phonics are back in vogue. The good teachers never really did stop using phonics.

The Alberta Teacher's Union is now fighting in the Supreme Court to get the right to be able to sit on school boards in jurisdictions where they do not teach. As it is - they can't sit on a school board in the jurisdiction in which they teach.

In rural areas, many teachers live in a larger center and teach in a smaller one. Not a good thing if this slips past the SCC.

Bruce wrote: Geezzz...a grand total of FIVE years operational policing

Yeah but she has seen every episode of North of 60 (or whatever the heck the name was) twice. That's why she was so effective in the Caledonia situation.

BTW dmorris, Saint Patrick was a Scot. :)

calgary clipper, I--lookout--made the comments about education!

I agree with all you say. The basis of my very successful language program--I use literature, not basal readers or canned programs--is phonics. The powers that be hold their noses but do appreciate the fine results. Go figure.

As you note, it seems that those in charge of important government services have often not paid their dues in the ranks so don't really know what's required. When the going gets tough, appeasement and caving seem to be their preferred modus operandi.

As dmorris notes, Canada's in big trouble.

sadly i think you are right.

"Canada's in big trouble."
That was from Canadian Sentinel.

largs; there seems to be doubt about exactly where Saint Patrick was born, and died, and when he lived, but I appealed to him as he is, I believe, the patron Saint of Ireland. With Gwen Boniface now in the Irish police service, they're going to need someone on their side if the going gets tough, and we all know it won't be Boniface.

LOL. dmorris, thanks for the correction!

Glad to see she could not run from her past. I hope the folks in Ireland take a long hard look.

Is that ever an understatement.Good observation though. Too bad not many see how close we still are to the edge of nowhere.

If the Socialist Liberals or any of there ilk gets power again, its over for this Federation.

Albertans will not go back to hanging there heads, & being near slaves, to these despots. The idea of sending them money to enrich themselves, makes us physically ill.

We will never submit to others moral views under duress. Least of all suck up to monsters. For the most part we support America & Israel. We will not be false friends nor oath breakers. We will leave faster than Speedy Gonzales, rather than bend the knee to Eastern despots. In league with muticult fantasist piranhas allied with a suicide cult with head chopping , child bomb, terrorists...

On that you can bet your life.

Boniface's subordinates will take a long, hard look. It's highly unlikely that the people in charge--in charge of hiring her too--will.

Luck of the Irish, unfortunately.

I remember a blogger close to the situation saying that she was related to Ken Hill. Does anyone know for a certainty? It would explian alot.

RDream..."Albertans will not go back to hanging there heads, & being near slaves, to these despots."

...you tend to forget the majority of Albertans come from Down East, and blood runs thicker than water.

Eventually Alberta will become Ontario West, unless of course we get a leader who actually does something where to shove the NEPII instead of talking about it.

Time to wake up - it is all about money, money, and more money which leads to corrpution in leadership and powerlust - hint: Ward 10, Newfoundland junket, or Calgarians not getting the 1% break on GST, but City Hall just gave themselves a 6% raise instead.

Sorry, what were you saying about despots?

RE: "you know, I wonder what we'll be thinking a year from now when we hear 'Caledonia'"

My guess is "new casino".

"...you tend to forget the majority of Albertans come from Down East, and blood runs thicker than water"
You're wrong about that. There's something in the water that transforms Albertans into level headed people. I know, I'm from Montreal, voted lieberal all my life ( sorry, threw up in my mouth a li'l bit there)until I moved to Edmonton.

"...you tend to forget the majority of Albertans come from Down East, and blood runs thicker than water."
Wrong. I'm from Montreal, voted lieberal all my life (sorry, just threw up a little in my mouth), until I moved to Edmonton. There's something in the water in Alberta that makes even easterners wake up and vote PC.

Multriec

True, good for you, either the water or the clean air free's the mind of Liberal fog...

My In-laws from Montreal (DDO) are the same and vote Liberal. They are coming out in a few weeks so hopefully I can feed them enough water and air to free their minds too ;-)

Reasoning: long established businesses, many head offices (was), large population base, and so on gotta know something us Western hicks don't is the reasoning.

"could it be that the commissioner was following orders?

I don't know but I wonder if maybe she isn't entirely to blame."

well she is to blame pennington, bonifarce like so many other senior copoids (get that brucey?) lacked the INTEGRITY to stand her ground if in fact she vas zhust fawsosing horders!!!! himmel !!!

do we really want an entire public service consisting of nothing by sychophants???? hmmmm ??? who the blazes IS going to stand up for principle ethics justice and honour ???? HMMMM ???? all the swirling anonymous schmucks ????

bonifarce is simply a TYPICAL cop with no regard to the real issues, protecting her precious career instead.

doesnt seem to have panned out however, eh?

good riddance KHAP.

how in blazes can that irishman have 'full confidence' is such a doofus??? what the blazes criteria do the irish use ????

We have a two class system in Canada and perhaps in NA.
It's not rich vs poor. It is: those with University degrees and those without, if you have a university degree, in govt offices, you immediately get to manage, give directins, take long lunches and get reposted if something goes wrong.
No lifting boxes or pushimng brooms. That's for the rest of us.

tomax7:

Most Easterners become Albertans. Success does that twined with liberty & social freedom.. As well a population willing to take a 4% cut in wages for there children. That they don't have a debt from our generations folly. Puts us in a category, people living out East cannot imagine. Would Ontarians do the same?

You have a phoenix growing in your back yard while you fell for the boy who cried wolf tactics. Quebec. Frankly Albertans could care less about running Canada. We want the whole Federation well off. Than maybe you will leave us the hell alone?

Not that we don't have problems. Its why we need a man Like Ted Morton, running this Province on a reform ticket of our political institutions. In order to meet the future challenges to keep our Culture.

system.http://www.tedmorton.ca/

Its time Albeta did a democracy make over.

In Edmonton one wacko Mom sent a letter in the mail that ended up with our loony left council banning peanuts at Foot ball games. Its to weep. We have to change here as well. Unlike others we don't just talk about it. It will be done.

It may come down to leaving for good. Create a Republic of our own. One with a real Constitution with justice for all equally. Not by race, sexual preference, religion or gender. Not the socialist pipe dreams, of a millennial mythical man. Who lives in a world of elites, & is happy to be told what to think , believe or practice.

This is anathema for Albertans in the strongest terms.
The second class citizenship with no equality has a lot to do with it as well. The will never be forgotten here. We where looted plain & simple, by so called Countrymen. I hope we stay myself, but if the left gets in. Its game over kids.

Robert J

I agree with you that the Commissioner should have "stood her ground" and done the right thing. Being the person in charge, she must bear responsibility for the (in)actions of those who served under her.

However, my point is that perhaps the rot goes deeper than the Commissioner. This country has a history of using its police forces to serve the those in power and their friends. Having grown up in Quebec, I remember how Duplessis, in the 1950's, directed the QPP and other police forces against political opponents and others he did not like (e.g. Jehovah's Witnesses).

From more recent times, the Vancouver Police Department was turned loose on hippies in Stanley Park in 1970 under the powers of the War Measures Act. I'm sure you will also recall the RCMP being directed against the PQ (barn burning) and again a few years ago against protestors at the APEC conference in Vancouver.

The powers that be in this country (and that includes those from all over the political spectrum) will not hesitate to give directions to the police when and where it suits them. And as long as we refuse to hold their feet to the fire they will continue to do as they please. Recently, there was a story of an Ontario judge demanding to know why his orders to remove the blockades had not been followed. The response from the provincial government's lawyers was very illuminating.

Of course the Commissioner should have said this is illegal. Maybe she did. Maybe she simply went along with what she was told to do. I don't know. I was not privy to discussions she must have had with the Attorney General's office (and neither, I suspect, were you).

Is it possible that, assuming she advocated doing the right thing and was overruled, her departure is a direct result of the police (in)action. I just think there is more to this story than what we are being told.

Just wait until tomorrow's newspapers.
The OPP press release will state that after midnight Sunday about 50-70 Caledonians and a large number of Natives engaged in rock throwing at each other, and that this is not condusive to peace.
what they omit saying is that it happened at 10:50 pm, 2 Opp were there, the rest did not respond to the 911 calls until midnight.
The OPP release also does not point out that it started with natives throwing rocks at an 87 yr old retired WW11 vet who was on his back porch.
The townspeople got involved when the police refused to engage, and do anything to stop the assault.
Even with Gwen going - the rule of law is still absent in Caledonia. At least they still apprehend goats in nearby Cayuga!

Well, as I was saying.....

what a freaking joke this whole thing is. why not stop the monthly "paychecks", turn off the hydro and every other service that runs to the first nations people in caledonia for which the rest of us "Canadians" have put in place. or here's another idea. give them back the land, but with it a great big bill from the province to cover every expense they've incurred on taxpayers to cover extra policing, legal fees, property damage, loss of revenue by businesses, and mental duress. they'd probably come owing us a truckload of cash. at the same time, they wanna be a "soverign nation"? let them have to negotiate and pay for every single thing they get or need. just any other country. lastly, gwen boniface is NOT a cop,...she's a politician right up there with mcguinty and harper. these slugs are all about covering their own arse by not getting involved. i never could stand mike harris, but when it came to dealing with relentless and lawlessness at ipperwash he had it about right
