The death of multi-culturalism in the UK - "How right wing the left sounds after its moment of racial truth"
Leave yours in the comments. Behave yourselves. As I mentioned earlier, NeoCitron brings out my mean streak.

Great article against multiculturalism. Now, let's see the 'death of multiculturalism' in Canada. What does multiculturalism do? It defines people by cultural origin, freezes that culture in a specific time-frame of about 100 years ago, and refuses to allow change. If you are born into that group, you 'absorb' that frozen ideology and must remain 'pure' to its icicles. No merging with other groups. No common humanity. You stay in your group.
Then, each group is understood as an 'electoral bloc' and the federal political party (the Liberals/NDP) cater to the group with special privileges and laws unique to the group. In return, they expect 'bloc' votes.
Canada? It doesn't exist within such a framework. It has become reduced to a collection of 'bits', of particles. And, there's nothing holding these 'bits' together; indeed, they are set up in opposition to each other.
Furthermore, in Canada, this hotion of locking people into closed groups is part of our Charter. Yes, multiculturalism dominates over individual rights. In our Charter. In Canada. Group rights trump individual rights.
And people are expected to function only in groups. Move out of the group and you are considered dangerous.
Kate: Get well soon. Being sick is no picnic. Trust me I know.
FYI: I was browsing Time online and found mention of 25-50 websites 'we can't live without' and this news site Tailrank mentioned your article on released journalists. Here's the link

Well just to show my paranoia, I was flipping channels yesterday, got to CBC Newsworld, and the bingo caller said that the plane that crashed in Kentucky was a “Canadian-made CRJ100.”
This morning I’m on the subway reading one of those crappy free newspapers and the CP article says the plane was a “CRJ100.”
The missing word from both of course is “Bombardier.”

Multi culturalism has been dead in this Country for a long time, if it ever was alive other than in the minds of the self-righteous lib/left, past governments just didn't know it. All anyone had to do was ask someone from another Country how they liked Canada, they would invariably say they loved it they wanted to be a Canadian, not a whatever/Canadian, a Canadian. They came here to be Canadian and live like we live not like they once lived, why the hell does anyone think they came here in the first place? Would you immigrate to another Country to remain a Canadian? The only immigrants that benefit from “multiculturalism” are the same loser types that make a living off it here. These immigrants learned that they could live off the system of multi cult the same as our own leaches. Multi cult sounds good in theory and law but in reality and practicality it is a complete an utter flop. Ask England.

Multiculturalism is dead in Canada, huh? That's why here in Saskatoon we had 'Ukranian Day in the Park' this weekend and Folkfest (around 25 different ethnic pavillions) a few weeks ago.
I'm not sure exactly what 'multiculturalism' is and I would guess the majority of Canadians wouldn't either. But I think if it means remembering where you came from, observing some of the customs or traditions from your ancestors, while living in the everyday world, it's not a bad thing.
Kate, first, I'm sorry you're still under the weather. Try that hot bath and bottle of rum. They do wonders for a cold. (They make me purr like a kitten...)
Re the posts at Maxed Out Mama's Blog: Holy Sh** Batwoman!! What I'm reading scares the living daylights out of me: totally narcissistic, sociopathic, predatory females who, when a poor, unsuspecting male--at her supposed invitation--wanders into her web/onto her Web is completely humiliated, eviscerated, devoured.
UGLY. NASTY.
If it was just the odd young woman doing this, I wouldn't be so alarmed, but it's epidemic these days. I suspect these frightening feminists are the outcome of substitute care (no one's home, especially mom) and Sex and the City (cited by one of the posters at MOM's) which, BTW, I wouldn't let my daughters watch. I've never seen an episode, just the title turned me totally off.
Rather remarkable in this day and age that a mom wearing an apron having just pulled a cookie sheet out of the oven while calling to her kids to "Come and get it!" is excoriated while sexually voracious, man-eating tigresses (Sarah Jessic Parker, are you listening? You're a mom now.) are feted, wined, dined, awarded (how many Emmys has SATC won?) and, saddest of all, COPIED by young women in North America.
That's the one thing I can agree with the Islamofascists about: North American morals are at rock bottom and our young people are suffering inordinantly. North American adults need to be adults, we need to grow up, we need to encourage our young people to grow up, and the only way I know how to do that is for us TO BE THERE FOR THEM.
We can't be there for them when we're running around "fulfilling" ourselves. While the adults in North America are busy gratifying their own urges and "fulfilling" themselves (sic and sick), our children are being put in the position of bringing themselves up--something they've never been very good at doing.
Lord of the flies, anyone? I'm not clear that we're headed there. I think we're on the island, crashed plane and all.
Todd - You made the point exactly, one day to remember all the good things from your heritage. They have those days in almost every other Country I have ever visited, including the melting pot US of A which is anything but Multicultural in the Canadian sense.

RE: Maxed out Mama and feminism and the Sex and the City Syndrom.
I have one problem with using the TV show as an insight or premise into what women think about intimacy and motherhood and that is IIRC Sex and the City (the tv show) was actually written by and is more about the lifestyles of gay men.
IMHO the characters on the TV show have a lot of the real problems of gay men in NYC rather than the real problems of women in NYC except for the fact that there are way too many women in the demographics there.
A single woman who wants a man would better their odds considerably if they were to move to Alaska .
Todd said: "...observing some of the customs or traditions from your ancestors, while living in the everyday world . . ."
The "everyday world" consists of exactly that: customs and traditions from our ancestors. In this country, the rule of law by which we govern ourselves, and culture that shapes our public lives, has been primarily an Anglosphere sort of deal: rule of law, individualism (as opposed to primacy of the group, as ET mentions above), honoring contracts, covenants beyond family and crony circles, and the maintenance of freedom in the first rank of political and cultural values. (www.anglosphereinstitute.org) Anybody from anywhere can live and prosper in such an environment, and many, many immigrants have shown that. The problem with "multi-cult" is when some other idea (for example, Sharia law instead of English Common Law with a soupcon of French Common Law or whatever it's called)is promulgated with the assurance that it will just be a little add-on, not to worry. That's like having a little add-on of broccolli in your cherry ice cream. Why do it? They don't go together, and cherry ice cream is good the way it is. Canada became what it is (or should I say was) because it was/is an Anglosphere country. If you want to live under Sharia law, go to a country where that's the prevailing culture. And don't think it's just a coincidence that you won't enjoy the standard of living you would have here.
Sure, I like ethnic food and folk dancing too. But we have to hang onto the things that count: rule of law, primacy of the individual, etc., etc.
Goody Goodale blames somebody else other than the corrupt Liberal government, a minority itself, of which he was Finance Minister.
"The issue of avoiding an election or propping up the government's minority situation, as we said on the outset, that responsibility belongs to either Jack Layton or Gilles Duceppe. They're the ones who created this minority situation in the first place."

Only 100 years ago??? You wish.
In the case of these Islamonutbars, try 1000 years ago. Infact, some of them have such atrocious cultural and social values, they were/are bettered by cave men at the dawn of civilization.
Sorry this is waaaay off topic but....
As I watch the Emmy's last night (I know, pathetic, but nothing else on) I thought it was in bad taste that they did a spoof of Lost on the day of the deadly plane crash in Kentucky.
It seems my reaction was less then those in the US where there is various forms of uproar over NBC not canning the bit in lieu of the accident.
However, what made me much more aghast and I can't find a mention of it anywhere is the end of the spoof where Conan walks into a hidden camera kitchen al la "To Catch a Predator" and is confronted by that shows host. That is beyond poor taste. They basically, IMHO, outed themselves by showing that yet again, it is about ratings. That the shows producers would condone such a spoof of such a show is downright sickening and as a parent of young children that like to explore the internet and always has this sort of crap on my mind I was appalled that they could spoof it. Am I the only one this put off?
And I'm not the oversensitive type. By any stretch. Anyways...
In answer to MaryJane, the way in which multiculturalism is set up as a policy to isolate groups within cultural and social forms of behaviour, which forms become frozen in time, rather than adaptive, is by:
First, defining multiculturalism as privileged over individuals in our constitution (section 15)
Second, dealing with groups that self-define themselves as speaking for all members of that group within the country. These groups lobby the government for funds to maintain their centres, whether religious, political, ethnic, cultural. The government should play NO role in promoting these groups; all funds should come from private sources.
Third, promoting Canada, within our schools and propaganda, as a 'cultural mosaic' rather than melting pot. Since 1971 when it began, and the 1988 bill on multiculturalism
www.cpa.ca/cjbsnew/1996/ful_edito.html
This has been the policy, to maintain the identity of the newcomer as a re-presentative of their former culture. This is promoted within the schools and within our approach to Others, who are viewed as re-presentatives of all the old ways. Their lobby groups speak for them. There is no attempt at evaluating whether or not these old ways can merge and develop new modes of belief and behaviour. Indeed, our schools don't focus on this, for that is the evil Melting Pot of the USA.
So, how does our gov't freeze cultural identities into the modes of the old country? By permitting groups to be represented as 'pure', which act as lobby groups for all 'members', who are considered members by default not by wish to be a member. By a long education process which rejects assimilation, rejects adaptation, and focuses on the benefits of remaining 'true to the culture'. By a constant propaganda self-definition of Canada as rejecting assimilation and adaptation.
It isn't the festivals and folk displays that freeze the immigrant cultures. It's our charter laws, our long education process that individuals are representatives of different groups and not individuals. It's our fervent rejection of breaking down group identification in favour of assimilation.
That's how it's done. No, it isn't by force which is what you are probably assuming. It's by psychological manipulation which is far harder to observe and deal with than simple physical force.
I'm not really sure what "multi-culturalism" is supposed to mean or how it has affected our country differently than the immigration experience in the U.S. But I also don't really understand what some of you assume to be the definition of a "melting pot". It seems that many wish their melting pot to consist of people coming from different parts of the world and adapting to the Canadian/American culture. But isn't the true definition of a melting pot the melding together of different cultures in the broader society? Thus, even in a melting pot (as opposed to multicultural) society, the culture is always in flux. That's why the Pat Buchanans of the world are so nervous about the demographics shifting and the prospect of "European" descendants becoming a minority. But there is the rule of law and a constitution to govern everything else, and we have those even while practising multi-culturalism. People will choose to "assimilate" or not, but either way they have to abide by the law.

As for feminists , their day is done.
It really never was until they got hold of government funding to advance their psychotic nonsense, ever attempting to tell other women how to do what they cannot or will not: Get married, have children, run a home, hold down a job and really, truly love their husbands. And they them.
There are many more of that type of woman around than these silly things running around telling everybody else how it should go and how the state should raise the children.
Just like libs and democrats. Telling EVERYBODY else how it should happen while they rake in the money into government coffers so THEY can have the power over how it is spent.
As in the Katrina disaster, perfect example. Tons of government money over the years, yet when the rubber hit the road, what had they done with it?
Built the levees in N.O. as they should have been built or skimming the money and pretending they were built. When this is exposed for the massive fraud it is and always has been, what do we hear?
Great whining and knashing of teeth that the 'government' ( meaning federal and Bush administration) did not do enough, soon enough.
Their mismanagement, malfeasance , criminality and neglect from the Mayor of N.O. on up to the Governor and Senator of LA was glaringly obvious but they frantically tried to focus on anything but that and postured for the cameras their 'outrage' at how they had been neglected.
Some of the largest programs aimed at LA simply were not enough for them, they demanded more.
This is typical of all levels of 'government' sponsored programs, from SOW to LA to 'sponsorship' in Canada... it all goes down the same drain... someone else's pockets get lined and our taxes go through the roof.
SOW should have been disbanded and defunded years ago. Libs want to keep it alive because they think it will further their cause towards getting elected again, no matter what.
I wonder if families and particularly women are beginning to see the fraud the SOW is and understand that if NOTHING else the fate of their very young children in government daycare is at stake and the 'Status' of women everywhere has suffered under this completely fraudulent definition of womanhood.
RE: including the melting pot US of A which is anything but Multicultural in the Canadian sense.
I would guess that in reality almost any American city would be more culturally and racially mixed than any Canadian one.
IMHO, multiculturism in Canada is often a political stand and it can be used to equivacate and undermine traditional Western i.e. Canadian values.
Festivals that have food and dance are fun and fine and good but advancing socialist politics under the guise and protection of multiculturalism is somewhat dishonest and IMO is not in the countries best interest.

Some points to ponder:
-multiculturalism when defined by " I'm Canadian but my grandparents came for Poland and I still enjoy perogies made the way my grandmother taught me" is vastly different than " Here is your grant, hyphenated Canuck, try not to blend into the rest of society".
- Beth, the biatch, is truly a scary find. It is one thing to be a strong, assertive and confident person (either gender), but this gem is way too much.
-who cares whether they mentioned Bombardier or not. The pilot drove it off the wrong runway. It could have been a Transalvanian B1-RD and it would have still ended the same. Pet peive of mine is how MSM tend to group things as if to try and connect the dots. "Why yes Ted, that is exactly the same type of aircraft that had the overflowing lavatory last year in Greece. Mmmm, interesting connection".
-NeoCitron and brandy, with a cinnamon stick. works for me.
-didn't watch the Emmys but the skit from what I was told was definitly in poor taste. Follywood screws up again.

Get well soon Kate. The multiculturalism piece was superb. It reminded me of Thomas Sowell's book "Black Rednecks and White Liberals", a fascinating read, meticulously researched and referenced, describing the isolating and socially destructive effects of one aspect of multiculturalism in the U.S. i.e. the attempt to define and support a distincive "black" inner city culture. His book points out the origins of the behaviours even the speech of the ghettos and explodes the myth that these have anything to do with Africa, or any positive value for inner city blacks in the U.S. Highly recommended and a salutary analogous lesson in the value of cultural integration.
The Canadian experience with muti-culturalism has been to delay integration of immigrants into Canadian society. Rather than insisting new Canadians become part of society, we have encouraged them to retain their old citizenship, cultural ties, cultural baggage. They speak their old language at home and while out and they school their children in the old language.
The integration will happen. Unfortunately the second generation will be as much Canadian as the old country and it takes the 3rd generation to be real Canadian.
The US meanwhile encorages and even insists that they become Americans now. Learn English, children in regular schools. I hear no talk of sharia law in the US. Why would that even be on the table in Canada?
enough
The fact is that, in practice, the U.S. is no less multi-cultural than Canada. DrD referred to Thomas Sowell's book to illustrate that there is a separate urban culture - and that's among people who were born in the U.S., not even immigrants. There is a huge Mexican population who has not learned English and continue to receive government services in Spanish. There are pockets of Asians and Arabs and Hassidic Jews who go about their business just as they do in Canada. There is the stated objective of a melting pot, but the practical effect is pretty much the same.
As for Sharia Law, recall that when the idea was proposed for family courts in Ontario, the result was to eliminate the ones which were based in Judaism and Catholicism. So your question shouldn't be why Sahria law was proposed, but rather why the other religious courts were in operation (and why nobody complained about them at the time.)
ET...Where in section 15 is multiculturalism defined as privileged over individuals? Can you cite an example of this occuring?
All sorts of groups lobby the gov't. Are you saying ethnic groups should be prevented from doing so?
Cultural mosaic, melting pot, don't American groups define themselves as hyphenated Americans in the same way as Canadian groups do?
How is the newcomer identity promoted within the schools? How does the education process reject assimilation?
Tex Canuck....Can you give an example of "Heres your grant, try not to blend in"? or are you smoking what ET's smoking?
go ahead and be an immigrant of your "special day". don't make too much of a fuss, serve the "real" canadians a few tasty ethnic dishes but be sure to offer canadian specialties like hot dogs and beer puke. when your day is over, put away your own clothing, it makes you look foreign and real canadians don't like it unless you look like them. you know, like americans.
In my Canadian sda experience jeff is really an American troll with a phd.
Hot dogs are not thought to be a Canadian specialty food but an American one, even in Canada.
If she were really Canadian she would have said smokies or Hawkins cheesies./s
And also she cannot capitalize.
no bozos allowed, in toronto, we call them hot dogs and they're for sale every 2 feet or so. however, i was being generally ironic with the dog reference. just so you know eh. furthermore, there are many "jeff's" out there. i may be a troll but i'm certainly not american.
Kate, Hope you feel better soon. IMO aspiran is truly a miracle drug. And to kill a cold I know the secret weapon. It is salt. Put a little (1/2 to 1 tsp) in a bowl with warm water and stick your nose in it and then swallow a few times, slowly drawing the salt water up into the nasal cavity. Then blow your nose. And gargling with salt water helps a sore throat too. Do not swallow the salt water and don't use it more than once or twice in a day.
Thanks for reminding me, concrete, because I forgot to tell Kate the thing that REALLY works to head off a cold, aside from zinc citrate tablets, soaking in a hot tub for at least an hour, and a bottle of dark rum.
GARGLING a few times a day, to kill off the germs causing that sore and scratchy throat, with either warm salt water or Listerine, really works.
Information overload, Kate? There's some overlap here, so pick the remedies to hand and GET WELL SOON!!
Jonesey,
No arguments from me on Catholic or jewish courts. More of the same muticultural garbage.
As far as mexican immigrants go, the US has been fighting this battle too. Because they have started to offer services in Spanish does not bolster your argument. Illegal immigrants separating themselves from other communities exacerbates this. Perhaps you could say on multiculturalism, the US has become more Canadian.
In practice and officially, the US is far less multicultural than Canada. Not even a worthy point to argue.
There will always be pockets because some people find it easier to stay in a similiar community. Canada encourages these pockets while the US discourages them. That they exist is not in doubt.

maryjane - I'd appreciate it if you would stick to issues and not move into ad hominem personal insults(smoking whatever ET is smoking).
Section 15, part two says: 'subsection 1 (which affirms equality) does not preclude any law, program or activity that has as its object the amelioration of conditions of disadvantaged individuals or groups including those that are disadvantaged because of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability".
What that means is that group rights trump individual rights. And section 27 says "this Charter shall be interpreted in a manner consistent with the preservation and enhancement of the multicultural heritage of Canadians'.
Multiculturalism was defined in 1988 under Bill C-93. This bill promotes the maintenance of cultural differences, rather than the collaborative development of a new evolved and shared cultural identity of all citizens. Millions of dollars in grants go towards funding 'identity groups' of various ethnic and religious identities. All are declared equal, despite the reality that their ideologies may not be equal and may not fit into a modern industrial state. For example, the Muslim ideology of the role of women.
Nothing goes towards fostering that collaborative development of a new cultural identity within the new land.
What is interesting about the Canadian multicultural policy, with its focus on pluralism rather than collaboration, ie, the notion of a collection of different and distinct and separate blocs of 'peoples', living as groups and remaining within their groups, is that it is a European and even more, a francophone ideology than it is an anglophone ideology.
France has never accepted immigration and immigrants as anything other than 'low wage workers' and has treated them as such, and banished them to the 'banlieu' suburbs. You'll see the same mentality in Quebec; almost 99.9% of immigrants are within Montreal. Not in the rest of the province, and Quebec has the lowest immigrant proportion rates in Canada.
Trudeau's multicultural policy is similar to that of France. Isolate these people by defining them within the descriptive characteristics of Their Group. Fund that Group so that it will retain those differences. But, dont ever develop a new collective and shared Canadian identity.
It is certainly possible to view this official policy as an 'open and accepting' perspective, but such a view is in my estimation, shallow and short-sighted. The real effect is isolation of groups and the complete inability to develop common, shared and forward looking identity as a Canadian.
My parents came from Russia in the 20's, as did a number of residents of our small town. The difference of the melting pot then and the multiculturalism now, is that my parents would gladly have fought for Canada against Russia, as they and most {if not all) of the immigrants in our town considered themselves Canadian's first and foremost, not Russians living in Canada, or Germans living in Canada, or Arabs living in Canada, or Palestinians living in Canada. Canada was their new home and they learned the language, laws, and customs. they adapted their customs to Canada’s, they did not expect Canada to adapt to or financially support them or their native traditions or customs.
In any battle it's important to have your guns are pointing in the right direction. On the right, and increasingly in the West as a whole, the aim is finally starting to shift -- entirely correctly -- from ethnic communities, and towards the Liberals/lefties who enable the crusading, non-integrating ethics of the worst of those communities. Ron Liddle of the London Sunday Times, linked-to by Kate, wrote "In the end, it is not that mad mullahs at whom we should direct our wrath, but the white liberals who enabled them to prosper."
Exactly so. Andrew Coyne addresses a similar issue, in last Saturday's National Post column, in which he notes the natural progression that led to possible anti-Semitism emerging naturally from the anti-Americanism -- "something of a state religion" -- entrenched within the Liberal party.
After describing the "intoxicating realization" of a typical undergraduate that "We're no the good guys. We're the bad guys: the West, white people, my parents, whatever..." he further drives the point home: "The reflexive oppositionism of so much of the left, it's instant identification with whoever or whatever is most hostile to the society of which it is a part (emphasis mine)...is a badge, a pose, a lifestyle, an arrangement of reality that is pleasing to believe, a reminder to the beliefs of the third eye of enlightenment that is his gift."
In the West we are seeing the fallout from this self-pleasuring attitude everywhere we look.
Later he writes "A refusal to make moral judgements, to distinguish between the merely flawed and the truly evil, may in time lead to an inability to do so. Having gotten out of the habit of judgement, the muscles can atrophy: If 'one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter,' then it is all too easy to forget, not only who the terrorists are, but who are the freedom fighters. If anti-Semitism is the 'socialism of fools,' perhaps anti-Israelism is the pacifism of knaves."
(Knave: a tricky deceitful fellow; an unscrupulous person.)
Cultural mosaic, melting pot, don't American groups define themselves as hyphenated Americans in the same way as Canadian groups do?
Not historically in the US. It's an affectation contrived by the Dems. It's trotted out when Dem politicians and their victim group constituents are panhandling for votes or funding. It's divisive and keeps the Dems sport of victim politics alive. What's the hyphen needed for except opportunistic political tribalism? Oh, sure, we all had origins somewhere else and most likely have cherished customs from that somewhere else, but, give me a break, in the US and Canada, how long does one need to have their the old country as their label?
If you are forever an African-American it's good for the Dems, you can rot on their plantation so much longer.
DrD - that's a good book. Thomas Sowell, an escapee from the Dems plantation, he's not playing the hyphen game.
Lots of tea and chocolate helps, Kate.

maryjane - I posted a reply but it was caught in the spam filter. I'd appreciate it if you would stick to the issues and not move into ad hominem (I don't smoke).
Read Section 15, part 2 of the Charter and you'll find that multiculturalism or group rights trump individual rights. See also Section 27 which specifically refers to multiculturalism. And note that the idea of multiculturalism was made law in 1988.
What is multiculturalism? It is a concept that rejects the collaborative devt of a general set of basic behaviour and beliefs specific to a new nation, Canada, and instead, opts for 'pluralism'. This sets up Canada similar to a machine, made up of multiple parts, each 'equal' but none alike. They are expected to stay separate, distinct.
A nation is not a machine; it is a living organism, and requires the dev't of a common, general, set of beliefs and behaviour. That is not done in Canada.
Multiculturalism isolates people into 'original country' groups; it promotes identification with this 'original group' and rejects the dev't of a new, broader and more relevant identity.
Canada spends millions on these groups, funding various centres of ethnicity and religion. These centres operate to continue their old identity.
Multiculturalism is also European and a particularly francophone ideology, which sees newcomers isolated from the 'pur laine', whether in the Paris suburbs or elsewhere. Trudeau's dev't of multiculturalism set up Canada as a collection of different groups, each isolate from the other, expressing themselves to the outside world only via their cultural artifacts, but unable to work collaboratively to develop a new common, shared set of beliefs and behaviour.
It isn't productive in a modern industrial economy, a society that requires networking, flexibility, and innovation.
ET...My reading of section 15 tells me not that part 2 't trumps part 1, but that part 1 doesn't preclude the application of part 2. Can you cite an example that would illistrate how multiculturalism has trumped individual rights.
In case anyone is interested, this story is old - but they just mentioned it on "The National".
It'll make your blood boil. Especially the part about parents not being able to opt out...
