One more day of dog showing, and then I hit the road for home. A little something for everyone. Use the comments for your own - and then get away from your computers, dammit, and enjoy what's left of this great long weekend!
And now, for something completely different...
The war between Israel and Hizbullah has revealed profound disagreement in the Arab world concerning the legitimacy of Hizbullah's activities against Israel. Two major camps have emerged.

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - Cambodian customs have seized 12 luxury vehicles stolen in Canada, including a Hummer and a Cadillac popular with hip-hop music stars, giving an intriguing insight into the world of international car smuggling.
The vehicles, packed in shipping containers containing aluminum and clothes, were seized at the deep-sea port of Sihanoukville at the weekend, officials said. All were 2003 models or later.

"It's the first time we've ever done this sort of thing," said Interpol's deputy director for Phnom Penh, Keo Vanthan, confirming that the vehicles were all registered in Ottawa as being stolen.

Peaceful succession under way in Cuba: official
Reuters via Yahoo! News ^ | August 7, 2006
HAVANA (Reuters) - Cuba has set in motion a peaceful political succession, dashing U.S. government expectations of chaos following Fidel Castro's hand-over of power to his brother, a leading Cuban intellectual and government member, Roberto Fernandez Retamar, said on Monday.
"They (the U.S. government) had not expected that a peaceful succession was possible. A peaceful succession has taken place in Cuba," Fernandez Retamar said at a news conference.
The writer and member of the Council of State was the first government official to say a succession under Raul Castro was in motion after Fidel Castro relinquished power a week ago following gastric surgery. ?

Judging by the demonstrations in Montreal, [and keep in mind, I am an ex-Montrealer], it is my view that most people may not realize that this is a golden opportunity for liberals, N.D.P., Bloc Quebecois and separatists to join demonstrations to make their opponent PM Harper look bad.
75% of demonstrators are just political opponents, while 25% are ex-pat Lebonese and Hezbollah supporters.
So the anti-Israel deomstration is not as strong in Montreal as we all first imangined.
Just keeping it real. = TG

In my opinion, the United Nations is a HUGE PROBLEM for Democracy in our time. Under the shield of the UN, Arbour and Strong and Annan et al back terrorist organizations and promote such "ideas" as One World Governance, Earth Charter, ect. The UN has had an undeserved free ride for too long, thanks to the MSM. But now the Internet and blogs are allowing ordinary citizens to call a spade a spade. The UN is walking like the perverbial DUCK !! And as the TS article shows, the media is finally starting to come around. YEH.
Kate, your link to The Corner item on, I take it, PM Harper doesn't go to a Harper item but to one on the Iranians arming Hezb'allah.
So what do we know about Raul? I understand he is no spring chicken. Is he of the same mind as his bro? Any successors after him?

...while organized crime has long been a major player in the export of stolen cars from Canada, a newer worry among police and security analysts is that profits may be fuelling terrorism, particularly in the Middle East..."

Mr Dosanjh is on cheap drugs if he thinks the Arrow is still cutting edge technology. Forty seven years ago, certainly but welcome to the 21st century and technology capacity doubling every eighteen months or so.
As a former airforce type I've cursed Dief every day I was enlisted but the idea of Arrow/Iroquois technology being current is nothing more than using emotion to sway voters. The technology from the Arrow went south a long time ago and a lot of it ended up down the street from me here in Houston.
The building of the ARROW would have broke this country economically. Def knew this and did the right thing, by cancelling it.
There are others to blame for this not Def.
jeezuz jeezuz jeezuz. dont talk to me about the Arrow.
wtf was that petty miserable twit deifentwiter thinking? was he so offended by a Liberal initiative he ordered every trace of it destroyed? blueprints through the shredder and planes under the cutting torch. Im surprised they didnt go after the film record as well.
the pundits wax on about 'yawell yawell yawell, its wasnt thaaaaaaat hot'. oh, well, then can we please keep just one for a museum?
to which they switch to 'yawell yawell yawell we cant let the ruuuuuuussians get the technology'.
well which is it? a mediocre design with record vertical acceleration, or cutting edge stuff that must be kept out of the russians hands? and if its that good, why the fuk are we so decisively obliterating it? you cant have it both ways people !!!!
I blame deifentwiter for the entire thing.
he was a truly pathetic petty man. look at the way he clung to power LONG after his day in the spot light.
it took me 35 years to so much as consider voting conservatist because of that and delayed again because of mulruin's record.
jeezuz jeezuz.
you cant have it both ways.
yo, 1800: an entire country cant build a couple planes?? what about the lieberals and their siphoning of BILLIONS AND BILLIONS in adscam, gun registry, et flippin cetera? or turdeau's energy policies and DREE, wasting more billions???
at least with the friggin Arrow we could have taken it to the point where we find out if it is something we can sell and make money. it has happened before ya know !!! if it was as good as some say, maybe the Israeli Air Force would have snapped up all they could for starters.
Ujal Dosanjh has once again dismissed himself for serious consideration on anything – particularly military matters.
We should abandom being part of the cutting edge Joint Strike Fighter program because it's capable of dropping nasty bombs on people, and instead, we should, on our own, revamp a 50-year old program.
Mr. Dosanjh, as one BCer to another, up yours. Ask the Canadian infantry that have to go in moments later whether they would prefer some bombs dropped on their enemy before they cross the departure line.
In Mr. Dosanjh's considered military opinion, the best defence is swatting flies.
Oh dear, folks. Anything from the "Cannonball Press" is a satire.
Sorry for the confusion.

There were several brilliant teams assembled to work on the Arrow.
There was no need to bury it as a delay could have returned some great financial returns on patented modules of the developed technology.
The USA was willing to pay and pay well for many of the advances made at the time.
Dief thought he had to quash it in order to save face. Too bad, but politics first and logic later if we are lucky, but no luck that time.
Dosanjh, in any case, is just fishing in the dark. Ignore him. = TG

Eight percent of world oil just got cut due to BP pipeline problems in Alaska. Big repairs and clean-up required.
So go ahead Madmud Almonjeans. Cut off your oil exports. This is just the incentive the free world needs to switch to Electic Vehicle use.
The means for EV have been here since the 90s but Big Auto, Big oil and government recognize
the loss of profits for auto manufacturing, the great loss of gas pump taxes income and the big shifts in employment and so slowed EV progress to the marketplace.

Canadian(n)a; You really sucked me in on this link. The U of Ott. prof. should have been my first clue. After the one you posted the other night about Ahmadinejad, I thought differently. This website was complete garbage.
Can I ask, who you think would be MOST likely to use nukes first, and where?
Do you really think other countries aren't after oil, power?
I just came across this David Warren essay tonight dated Aug.6 - 'A horrible truth.' It should probably go in the "They're a bunch of terrorists..." thread.
I was disappointed that the Harper link wasn't one. Anyway, I too believe he's a splendid fellow. To have a Prime Minister with the "cojones" to be his own man is a wonderful change from Lieberal lite PMs, who were not only cheats and liars, but were mesmerized by their immature, damaging, and mean-spirited anti-Americanism.
That the loony-tune lefties accuse Harper of being a Bush clone is laughable: We haven't had a more mature, more focused, more independent-minded Prime Minister in my lifetime. I usually support President Bush and, and even my leftie friends, who recognize my independent mindedness, have never called me a Bush clone--I guess because my views on many things were well formed long BEFORE Bush became the president. When he was elected, I was pleased because his way of thinking is much closer to mine than Clinton's was. E.g., My conservative mindset is more often reflected in a Republican than a Democratic regime.
For those who are howling at this admission, like the pack animals you are, please remember Canada's still a free country, at least on paper, and democracy means we ALL have a right to our own opinions and are allowed to vote for the candidates we'd prefer to see in office. This little civics lesson is one I think a few people need to keep in mind. So, you have every right to question my views--and Harper's--but not to accuse us of toadyism.
In fact, if Harper WERE a sycophant and shamelessly vying for higher poll numbers, he'd be playing up to the American baiting and hating Canadian MSM. He's not. (After decades of shamelessly spinning the facts, the MSM have, unfortunately, brainwashed a critical mass of Canadians into being knee-jerk anti American. Now, THERE'S a group of zombies: Being duped by the scheming Lieberals and their lapdog MSM into falling for such an immature, unhelpful strategy, that's altogether damaging to both our safety and best interests, doesn't show much evidence of independent thinking to me. How about a chorus of "All we like sheep . . ."? Actually, the next line's also very suitable, " . . . have gone astray." Isaiah via Handel)
Stephen Harper has had a well formed political philosophy for a very long time: No doubt, it's more well rounded and rationalized than the President's. So to suggest that he blindly follows Bush's orders, like some kind of trained dog, is altogether ludicrous and totally out of character for Harper. That he and Bush genuinely share a similar outlook on many issues is more like it. And, as this is, ostensibly, a free country, there's no reason that Harper shouldn't follow his conscience and do what he believes is the honourable--THAT was never a factor in the deliberations of our last two Lieberal PMs--and proper thing to do. It's unfortunate that the Lieberals lite, who are the real pack animals, who think and act as a pre-programmed group, go ballistic over this and make juvenile, ad-hominem attacks. My advice? Grow up and get over it.
As the MSM are ramping up their despicable anti-Harper campaign, I'm in awe of his maturity and self-restraint and that of his caucus. Unlike the mangy Lieberal pack, who'd be very loudly whinging and complaining all over everybody, the CPC is biding its time and getting on with making the difficult decisions that are needed to run this country in a very dangerous time. It's good to know that the grownups are in charge. Instead of looking at themselves in the mirror all day--like the adolescent Lieberals used to--the CPC's doing the job we elected them to do. You go, gals and guys!
Lookout,
Motion seconded. =TG
Lookout -Wonderful post. Cheers.
Mark,
Reducing Iran*s potency through lower oil demand is a very real avenue we should peruse with more vigor.
Your opinion is knee-jerk in nature and you are welcome to express it, but is it flawed?
You are suggesting that millions of scattered power plants operating at various efficiencies, [cars & trucks], is more practical than an efficient central power plant that most cars could plug into?
Some people may not agree with you on that.
In any case, the means to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels is here and we should use them to their full extent possible.
Iranian cleric leadership may well become less aggressive when they see world trends moving away from oil dependency.
China seems to be very motivated as they have over 500 makers of electric bikes and scooters. Must we learn from China?
http://tinyurl.com/q7gqz
There is no cheaper way to commute to school or to work.
Switching away from motorbikes to electric looks like a trend to me. Especially when you consider the numbers of bicycles in use in India, China and Indonesia .
While they switch up from bicycles to E-Bikes, we in North America would do well to switch from gas burners to EVehicles.=
