This inability of Europe to get its act together is what suggests 1938. Back then, Churchill was hardly the only one who thought Hitler was intent on war. After all, the German leader was an ideological zealot -- and a murderer to boot. Still, England did little.
Similarly, you don't have to have Churchillian prescience to see that what happened once in Lebanon can happen again. Hezbollah's avowed aim is to eradicate Israel. Listen to what it says. Pay attention. It will renew its attacks the first chance it gets. This is why it exists.
Or is it 2006?

Story at Toronto Tory.

Hardline anti-backbaconist Kate asked: "Is It 1938 Again?"
In light of the fact that more Jews immigrated to Germany than Israel last year, and considering that today Germany "sold" (actually, donated) Israel two (2) highly advanced submarines, the answer to your question is "no."
"In the face of Iran's race to obtain nuclear power, Israel signed a contract with Germany last month to buy two Dolphin-class submarines that will, according to foreign reports, provide superior second-strike nuclear capabilities, The Jerusalem Post has learned...Germany donated the first two submarines after the first Gulf War and split the cost of the third with Israel."

I thought I'd seen everything, but this takes the cake.
Somebody thinks it's cool to name a restaurant after the most destructive maniac of the twentieth century.
It's time for the Jewish folks in India to do what the Islamics would do if someone named a restaurant after a guy who was dedicated to their destruction.
Oh, and I almost forgot: Godwin! You lose! Haha!
"Somebody thinks it's cool to name a restaurant after the most destructive maniac of the twentieth century."
There's a restaurant named after Joseph Stalin? Ewwwww, that's tacky!
I wonder how long it will take before the place gets bombed.
I also wonder if it was a leftie who invented that Godwin crap? If it sounds like a socialist and smells like a socialist its probably a NAZI.
Can Bob get the boot? Please.
FREE,
I think it applies to both the left and the right. While Kenney was stupid to make the nazi comparison, the left does it a lot as well. Jean Lapierre called Duceppe a Nazi for wanting the Liberals to 'disappear' from Quebec. Bush is often called Hitler for the military activity in Iraq and Afghanistan. And most ironically of all, Israel has been equated to nazism for their treatment of the palestenians.
I think comparing anyone to the nazis is so incredibly dumb and short-sightened. Since no one to the best of knowledge has tried to takeover the world AND kill 6 million jews since 1945.
Godwins law is good for the tubes!
"Somebody thinks it's cool to name a restaurant after the most destructive maniac of the twentieth century."
can't be Stalin. He only murdered about 20 million directly. Hitler was a rank amateur at about 12 mill.
Now Mao Tse Tung, he KNEW murder . . best estimates are about 50 million.
None of these totals includes the deaths due to war . . just the regular old murder of rivals, non-believers and anyone else these sick paranoids decided had to go.
And the driving political baseline for all these whackjobs was socialism of one flavor or another.
Sociliasm . . all about justice and Islamism, all about peace.
I have a bridge for sale !
"While Kenney was stupid to make the nazi comparison,"
Kenny is correct. If ya can't handle reality, join the NDP or the Liberals - free rose colored glasses for everyone.
It's not like 1938 - we have past that point . . this is more like late '39 & the Spring of 1940 . . . the Sitzkreig time.
Its coming and its not going to be pretty.
When the West finally wakes up and starts fighting, payback is going to be a real bitch.
It is astonishing to think that a person could be so obtuse as to invoke a stupid usenet retort on a post that speaks directly to a state headed by a man who has openly declared that he will destroy Israel if given the chance.
If you can't do better than that, Bob, leave. Or sign your full name so that your stupidity can be properly attributed.
Like I said. If it sounds like a socialist and smells like a socialist its probably a NAZI. You remember those guys, the german workers SOCIALIST party, wasn't it?
This is nothing new. There was one in Korea a few years back.

Can't blame the Hisbo Propaganda Dept, but the media reps, lining up for "their shot" as they watch the sequences being staged, they are beyond hope.
CBC - will you do a story on this mass deception ??
Yes, it's exactly like 1938...except for the fact that Nazi Germany was a heavily industrialized country with one of the largest and best trained armed forces in the world, while the Middle East today is a collection of disparate states, virtually no industry, with poorly trained and ill equipped fighting forces.
I'll be on the beach, having a drink while I wait for the invasion. Don't forget to bring the concertina wire.
You must be French.
sitzkreig.
thats a good one.
I have the thames 'world at war' dvd version, (see IMDB.COM) goes into all that 'phony war' thing with the false starts in scandinavia etc. 'we'll be home by christmas' yada yada ya.
in a body bag.
WW II started by hitler caused about 60,000,000 dead, way more than 12 mill. 12? cripes. the holocaust alone was half of that already.
is there a petition to boot Bob off this blog?
I may irritate people but at least I TRY to be objective.
Hitler's Cross? That's got to be the most demented thing I've seen in a long time. Well, at least they can get Prince Harry as a customer when he's in town.
(And to think it took hundreds of years for Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan, much more successful conquering brutes, to be so "honoured".)
Yes RobertJ you do irritate everybody and if there is a petition to boot boob you can add my vote.
for international 'force' substitute international 'farce'
note george dubya the 'war president' is currently bogged down 1000 kms east in iraq and wont be supporting any lebanon action if there ever is any.
gotta gas up the SUV eh???
I saw harry's SS pics. putrid stuff. the royal family is the longest living line of con artists and parasites on the planet. the concept of 'blue blood' is a gigantic lie seeing as we are either descendants of adam and eve or a monkey. doesnt MATTER what side of the fence youre on, seeing as monkeys are definitely NOT royalty (well......) and if they are then we are ALL royals in which case why do the windsors get such special attention???
oh, it was edict and will of the people 1000 years ago. I see. thats how its done. a one time appointment. where does it say that???
etc etc
No Kate, I'm not French. Thankfully I'm not a paranoid fear-mongerer either.
oh, it was edict and will of the people 1000 years ago. I see. thats how its done. a one time appointment. where does it say that???
You can't expect to wield supreme executive power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
Speaking of annoying trolls, Deb Frisch was arrested recently in Oregon, charged with stalking. Instapundit and others have details.
We spend billions on education in this country and what do we get –Iberia
The enemy is some significant percentage of 1.3 billion Muslims. The enemy could be bigger than the German military. It is so cowardly and evil that it doesn’t wear a uniform and it uses women and children as human shields. It is suicidal like Kamikazes, it will blow itself up for utopia . But it’s worse than Kamikazes because it targets innocent women and children. It is a scourge, worse than the black plague and it could very well have sick members living on your street.
These Islamofascist armies are transnational, not bogged down by regular nation-state principals and duties to its citizens – Hezbollah runs Lebanon without the hassle of governing. It can’t run an industry but doesn’t have to; it is funded by massive oil money. It can buy WMD’s on a just in time basis. It is supported within our own democracies by academia and the MSM who are utopian just like the BBC was in 1938. The head of the BBC at the time liked Hitler.
We have 2 enemies – the Islamic Fascists and the utopian enemy within as represented by exhibit A - Iberia
RobertJ . . . go back and READ the post
"None of these totals includes the deaths due to war . . just the regular old murder of rivals, non-believers and anyone else these sick paranoids decided had to go."
was the part about "None of these totals includes the deaths due to war" beyond your pea brain comprehension levels ??
I could get a crayon & use block letters if that would be more to your grade level. . . except crayons get Volpe excited.
nomdenet:
You are a perfect example of what happens when we don't spend enough on mental health care. Get a grip...you are more likely to be hit by lightning then killed in a terrorist attack.
Other than killing all the Muslims, what's your solution?
I'd say we are at 1939, agree with Fred we are well past the early 30's, just waiting for the equivalent of Hitler's invasion of Poland, probably a dirty bomb or Iran's nuke. The denial, complacent voters and the Useful Idiots, as Churchill documented in his time, still abound. History repeats itself.
Hey, iberia, the Islamofascists don't have to engineer their ultimate weapon of mass destruction like the "industrialized" Germans, they can purchase the technology from others with their oil money. And, they do. If your comment was meant to snarkely doubt that they can't deliver maximum pain and suffering to us, you are being a cynical fool - one of the above described idiots of the 1930's.
Oh, and watch the beach you sit on waiting for the invasion, Bali wasn't that safe for tourists.
Iberia, you’re the one that says Islamic Fascism isn’t a problem - so why would I waste my time telling you about a solution.
However, utopians are a problem in Canada as we can clearly see on this Blog. The solution for that problem is:
First – get a majority conservative government
Second – stop the utopian notion of multiculturalism and hyphenated Canadians
Third – close the CBC
Fourth – bring back into our schools a daily pledge of allegiance that spells out very clearly that in Canada we believe that church/mosque and state must be separated. We believe that women are equal to men etc etc.
Fifth - charge full tuition for all university courses. Provide accessibility to student loans to cover 100% tuition. Let students figure out the economic value of taking BA in Gender Studies that won’t get them a job to pay off the student loans and thus the drop in of enrolment in the Social “Sciences” will gradually weed out all the Pinko Profs that have been brainwashing our youths.
Pavlov would be fascinated by the automatic brainless outrage that occurs when someone decides to use a swastika in any manner. I happen to like the form of the swastika, or perhaps I should instead say that I like the shape of the symbol representing the four arms of Vishnu. Hitler stole the swastika from the Hindu's/Buddhists and it looks like he made the gods angry by doing so.
I personally happen to find the hammer and sickle far more offensive, and in my youth would rip down a Russian flag whenever I saw it. Stalin's role in the death of 12 million Ukrainians may have had something to do with it. I've matured now and view the hammer and sickle as another symbol from the past which is meaningless on its own.
One thing that I've always wondered about, and perhaps someone here has the answer, is how long does a murderous dictator have to be dead before naming a restaurant after them doesn't cause any public outrage? I'm sure that if someone named a restaurant after king Leopold II and decorated the restaurant with memorabilia from his role in the establishment of the Congo colony, no one would bat an eyelash. There is the minor detail of the 5-15 million people that died as a result of the business practices employed by king Leopold, but since this was over 100 years ago, it has vanished from the list of historical events that will outrage people. As people don't seem overly upset over the slaughter of Armenians by the Turks in WWI, I'll use the value of 88 years as the time duration that people can be outraged by a past event (except in places like the former Jugoslavia where people still are pissed off about what happened in 1300, but that is an exception). This means that in 27 years we can expect to see giant black swastikas marking the location of restaurants of the hugely successful Hitlers Burgers chain, that is if the food police haven't banned burgers by then.
I must have missed something. What did Bob say that was so bad? A reference to Godwin's Law is tongue-in-cheek but...
I guess I missed something else.
Hmmmm ... well, England began rearming in a serious way after about 1935. The will to fight was lacking, but it wasn't all bad. Hore-Belisha was far from useless, even though Churchill did sack him.
Wow. Hezbollah, who has the support of Syria and Iran, tells the world that it's committed to the destruction of Israel, and begins ramping up; the lefty sophists come out of their holes here and call those who merely notice "paranoid fear-mongerers."
What can you say, other than that rats are almost impossible to get rid of?
"Thankfully I'm not a paranoid fear-mongerer either."
Don't be so fast to pat yourself on the back.

Other than killing all the Muslims, what's your solution?
Here's mine. Try this, kill all Muslim terrorists. Simple. Direct. And, to the point. Your pathetic "kill all Muslims", a real stupid bid at taking a rational issue and remedy to some stupid end point won't play with the intelligent.
"Lightening" vs terrorist victim?.......it depends, sucker, on where you live, Darfur or NYC, if you understand actuarial tables. Geography counts more than meteorology as far as terrorist victims go.
And, hey, sweetie, you are the poster boy/girl for the failed public schools. Reading very carefully what I've said, in your best reading comprehension and logic, got anymore dumb one-liners you want to spew?
The rats are so disassociated from reality that no amount of facts will change their worldview. It is unfortunate that so many otherwise educated people are in a haze of grand denial. Nevertheless, there is hope. I have actually been speaking to a few "moderately" left-leaning people who are actually starting to get it. I just wish the media would help hit these people over the head with a clue by four.
BTW: Is it just me or did Iran just flip us the bird in their little memo to the UNSC?
Mostly off topic, but on the subject of hatred and anti-Semitism, Big City Lib a.k.a. BCL has revealed himself here:
http://bigcitylib.blogspot.com/2006/08/meet-bigcitylib.html
(I also placed it under the previous post by mistake, but this is where I meant to put it.)
lberia,
of course you know that just a few nuclear devices - you know, what Iran is moving towards getting - can cause as much destruction as the entire German army during WWII.
You know that, but your ideology just won't let you admit it.
Sad really.
lberia, could you please explain the origins of your nic.
Even though some have read your nic as Iberia, it comes up as lberia, as in Lavrenty Beria, Stalin's secret police chief, when copying & pasting.
I'm curious why you would use the name of someone complicit in up to 10 million murders.
Hi loki:
First off, I agree that the swastika pre-dates Hitler by several thousand years. Actually, I think that there are several cultures that claim it as their own. Hindus are probably the most prominent because so much of their early art contained it. But, there are others including the "original civilization" of the Sumerians. As I recall, that was why Hitler claimed it...he figured that the Aryans were direct descendants of the Sumerians. The sad part is that it was considered a good-luck sign by all those who used it. But like it or not, Hitler made it infamous...and now it is the Nazis that the symbol gets associated with. But, I don't think that it is just the symbol that is causing the uproar here. The place is called "Hitler's Cross". No ambiguity there about what the swastika is being used for. So, people are, I think, rightly annoyed.
As for your question about how long is long enough before murderous dictators stop enraging people...I think I have an answer for that: As long as it takes for people to stop teaching their children to hate/fear a group based on the actions of the ruler(s). Leopold II is not someone who the average kid knows about. Hitler, everyone knows about. You mention Stalin and 12 million Ukranians. I suggest that you answered your own question by pointing that out. If you don't teach your own kids that Russians (as opposed to Stalin) should be hated because of that, then the animosity will be lessened a little bit for the next generation.
You are right, Yugoslavs (some of them) are tied up with problems from the 1200-1300's...but only the ones whose parent are feeding it to them. Same with Protestants and Catholics in Ireland...and so on.
Hitler is an exceptional example because, even in the nation that he ruled not so long ago, mention of him and the Nazi party is strictly limited (try to find a copy of the game Wolfenstein in Germany and see how far you get). The resentment over his legacy is stronger even than that of Stalin - who is dubiously "credited" with the deaths of 45-70 million (depending on your source) of his own people throughout his reign.
So, I don't think that the Hitler stigma will go away just because 88 years have passed.
Just my view though.
Just like on OCT 30 1938 they did a radio broadcast of H.G. WELLS sci fi classic WAR OF THE WORLDS it convinced many that we were being invaded by MARS
spurwing plover,
"Just like on OCT 30 1938 they did a radio broadcast of H.G. WELLS sci fi classic WAR OF THE WORLDS it convinced many that we were being invaded by MARS".
I'm not sure what you are saying with this. If what you are implying is that the left ignored a real life, decade long military build up by Germany with no alarm - then got alarmed by an hour long fantasy on the the radio ... I'd say your right.
Sixty some years later we have M. Moore, A. Gore, the UN, etc., etc, trying to do the same thing that H. G. Wells did.
""None of these totals includes the deaths due to war"
uh yup. thats what you said. I take it back. 12 million regular folksie dead puts herr adolph down the list behind joe and the squat pudgy cummunist from the far east.
I wonder, is the 21st century is going to be as lethal as the last one? if so is it going to be disease and starvation that does it?
when did the native n american indians start using the swastika? its actually rather simple connection of lines, maybe they came up with it on their own.
You ignorant western fascists discouut the fact that the Jews clearly committed genocide, mass murder and war crimes in Lebanon. Judism means GENOCIDE. Socialism, Communism, Nazism, and Islamofascism means PEACE!!! Clue up, peeps.
Addressed to Tom Penn: *yawn*
Alarmed? Yes, I am alarmed, because too many people are not aware of this second rising tide of murderous fascism. Hitler was leading a fairly small population towards world domination in 1938. Hitler came close to winning control of all Europe.
This time there are several leaders motivating billions of Muslims to enslave and subdue our democratic and free lifestyles that we enjoy today. The majority of us seem not to be aware of the intolerable suffocating pain it will be to live under iron - fisted Shia law.
That a Canadian Liberal MP visiting Lebanon could suggest Hezbollah be removed from the terrorist list simply adds to my impression that a majority of Canadians have no idea that we are at war for our survival and freedoms. My sense of urgency may mean nothing, but the following views are h/t [Duke].. From a retired commander, USAF.
I did a "Google search" on the Doctor and found him to be a retired Air Force Surgeon of all things and past Commander of Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio (Air Force Hospital). So he is real, is connected to Veterans affairs in California , and these are his thoughts. They are worth reading and thinking about! (the same Google search will direct you to some of his other thought-provoking writings.)
1. When did the threat to us [of the free world] start?
Many will say September 11, 2001 .The answer as far as the United States is concerned is 1979, 22 years prior to September 2001, with the following attacks on us:
* Iran Embassy Hostages, 1979;
* Beirut , Lebanon Embassy 1983;
* Beirut , Lebanon Marine Barracks 1983; [241 dead marines]
* Lockerbie , Scotland Pan-Am flight to New York 1988;
* First New York World Trade Center attack 1993;
* Dhahran , Saudi Arabia Khobar Towers Military complex 1996;
* Nairobi , Kenya US Embassy 1998;
* Dares Salaam , Tanzania US Embassy 1998;
* Aden, Yemen USS Cole 2000;
* New York World Trade Center 2001;
* Pentagon 2001.
(Note that during the period from 1981 to 2001 there were 7,581 terrorist attacks worldwide).
2. Why were we attacked?
Envy of our position, our success, and our freedoms. The attacks happened during the administrations of Presidents Carter, Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton and Bush 2. We cannot fault either the Republicans or Democrats as there were no provocations by any of the presidents or their immediate predecessors, Presidents Ford or Carter.
3. Who were the attackers?
In each case, the attacks on the US were carried out by Muslims.
4. What is the Muslim population of the World?
25%. [ Twenty-five percent ]
5. Isn't the Muslim Religion peaceful?
Hopefully, but that is really not material. There is no doubt that the predominately Christian population of Germany was peaceful, but under the dictatorial leadership of Hitler (who was also Christian), that made no difference. You either went along with the administration or you were eliminated. There were 5 to 6 million Christians killed by the Nazis for political reasons (including 7,000 Polish priests).
(see ht tp/w.w.nazis.testimony.co.uk/7-a.htm )
Thus, almost the same number of Christians were killed by the Nazis, as the six million holocaust Jews who were killed by them, and we seldom heard of anything other than the Jewish atrocities. Although Hitler kept the world focused on the Jews, he had no hesitancy about killing anyone who got in his way of exterminating the Jews or of taking over the world - German, Christian or any others.
Same with the Muslim terrorists.
They focus the world on the US, but kill all in their way -- their own people or the Spanish, French or anyone else. The point here is that just like the peaceful Germans were of no protection to anyone from the Nazis, no matter how many peaceful Muslims there may be, they are no protection for us from the terrorist Muslim leaders and what they are fanatically bent on doing -- by their own pronouncements -- killing all of us *infidels.* I don't blame the peaceful Muslims. What would you do if the choice was shut up or die?
6. So who are we at war with?
There is no way we can honestly respond that it is anyone other than the Muslim terrorists. Trying to be politically correct and avoid verbalizing this conclusion can well be fatal. There is no way to win if you don't clearly recognize and articulate who you are fighting.
So with that background, now to the two major questions:
1. Can we lose this war?
2. What does losing really mean?
If we are to win, we must clearly answer these two pivotal questions:
We can definitely lose this war, and as anomalous as it may sound, the major reason we can lose is that so many of us simply do not fathom the answer to the second question - What does losing mean?
It would appear that a great many of us think that losing the war means hanging our heads, bringing the troops home and going on about our business, like post-Vietnam. This is as far from the truth as one can get.
What losing really means is:
We would no longer be the premier country in the world. The attacks will not subside, but rather will steadily increase. Remember, they want us dead, not just quiet. If they had just wanted us quiet, they would not have produced an increasing series of attacks against us, over the past 18 years. The plan was, clearly, for terrorists to attack us until we were neutered and submissive to them.
We would, of course, have no future support from other nations, for fear of reprisals and for the reason that they would see; we are impotent and cannot help them.
They will pick off the other non-Muslim nations, one at a time. It will be increasingly easier for them. They already hold Spain hostage. It doesn't matter whether it was right or wrong for Spain to withdraw its troops from Iraq . Spain did it because the Muslim terrorists bombed their train and told them to withdraw the troops. Anything else they want Spain to do will be done. Spain is finished.
The next will probably be France. Our one hope on France is that they might see the light and realize that if we don't win, they are finished too, in that they can't resist the Muslim terrorists without us. However, it may already be too late for France . France is already 20% Muslim and fading fast!
If we lose the war, our production, income, exports and way of life will all vanish as we know it. After losing, who would trade or deal with us if they were threatened by the Muslims. If we can't stop the Muslim terrorists, how could anyone else?
The radical Muslims fully know what is riding on this war, and therefore are completely committed to winning, at any cost. We better know it too and likewise get committed to winning at any cost.
Why do I go on at such lengths about the results of losing?
Simple. Until we recognize the costs of losing, we cannot unite and really put 100% of our thoughts and efforts into winning. And it is going to take that 100% effort to win.
This is only part of it. You can get this filled out at DukeMcgoo.blogspot.com

If there is, I'll sign it. Enough is enough.
Iberia:
"Yes, it's exactly like 1938...except for the fact that Nazi Germany was a heavily industrialized country with one of the largest and best trained armed forces in the world"
Er, not quite.
In 1938, Hitler was still operating by bluff and bluster. Germany was never really as heavily industrialized as you might imagine. And while it did have a well-trained military at that time, it was by no means the largest and certainly not the best equipped.
The army that marched into the Rhineland in 1936 was actually mostly "footborne" and horse-drawn. If either France or Britain had had any gumption, Hitler's gambit would have been quickly terminated.
Bluff and bluster got Nazi Germany through to 1939.
Even during the war, Germany's industrial output, while prodigious in its own right, could simply never hope to compete with the Allies' effort.
Like the Confederacy in the US Civil War, Germany had to win quickly if it was going to win at all. Once the might of US industrialism was involved, the jig was up.
Lesson One: Perhaps the West should call Iran's bluff?
Lesson Two: The West and China hold all the global industrial cards, even in a post-industrial age. Iran and the Muslim countries that act as a power base for Islamist extremism haven't even begun the Industrial Revolution yet.
