This News Release from the PMO just arrived in my mailbox:

"Prime Minister Harper announces Special Advisor on South Asia and the Middle East

August 8, 2006
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced the appointment of Wajid Khan, MP, Mississauga--Streetsville as Special Advisor on South Asia and the Middle East. Mr. Khan will travel to these two regions in the coming weeks and report on medium and long-term opportunities to further Canadian engagement there in early October.

“Canada has an increasing number of interests in both South Asia and the Middle East,” the Prime Minister stated. “I am delighted Wajid Khan will be sharing his insights on future developments with the Government of Canada.”

Wajid Khan was born in Lahore, Pakistan and served in the Pakistani Airforce before moving to Canada in 1974. He has significant contacts, experience and cultural familiarity with South Asia and the Middle East. He has long been a prominent voice in the Toronto Pakistani and Muslim communities. He was first elected to the House of Commons in 2004.

“Canada’s commitment in Afghanistan has focused the country’s attention on these regions,” Mr. Khan said. “I support our commitment in Afghanistan and offered my services to the Prime Minister as Canada plans for the future. I will report to him on my first-hand experiences and observations from these regions.”

Wajid Khan will work with Canadian diplomats as he travels in these regions and prepares his report."

That Harper, always full of surprises ! I can't wait to see how the Liberals and the various media spin this little shocker.

Khan, of course, is a LIBERAL MP.

Wajid Khan is my MP. He lives in Toronto. Here's a recent letter by him to The Mississauga News:

Canada has a role

Canada has a role

The events of the past week in Lebanon have been troubling for some Canadians and tragic for others. The deaths of eight Canadian citizens in the Israeli bombardment have caused widespread consternation, especially given that in Harper's view, Israel is simply taking a "measured response". Let's be clear, the taking of civilian lives, whether by Hezbollah terrorism or by Israeli military action, whether by design, or as part of what today's politicians euphemistically call "collateral damage", can never be justified.

I strongly believe that in the current period of global instability, especially in the context of the Middle East, Canada has a unique opportunity to assert itself as a moderate and engaging voice on global and regional issues and to solidify and expand its influence on the world stage. With that influence however, Canada also has a responsibility to be the voice that stresses diplomacy and opens lines of communications with world leaders.

We should be taking it upon ourselves to open up lines of dialogue with nations such as Iran, Israel and Syria, whatever their past or future intentions, in order to follow a path of constructive engagement and to look for positive ways of resolving conflict.

From the machinations of the past week however, it has become obvious that Canada's attempts to create its own strong and independent voice in the global arena, and the chance to act as the honest broker, are in danger of being squandered by the foreign policy manoeuvres of the Conservative government. At the G-8 leaders meeting, Harper unequivocally wrapped himself around the U.S. policy of unqualified support for Israel's military actions. While it has always been important to maintain good relations and where appropriate, support the actions of the United States, the Conservative government's inability to articulate its own policy in the Middle East and attempts to curry favour with the Bush administration cannot and should not supplant Canada's existing foreign relations capital, nor our potential to be a sober and moderate voice of reason in the world.

Wajid Khan

Member of Parliament

Maybe Harper called his bluff and decided to send him overseas.

Remember Mulroney sent Stephen Lewis to the UN.

But Khan is no Stephen Lewis.

Same tactic though, cant say he is partisan, and exploits the split in the Liberal party. And if Khan appears to play politics with it Harper gets to ignore him and discredit the Liberals.

Smart move

Hey, that was great. Even Kate's readers who have seen Stephen Taylor's presentation should listen to Adler's take. He manages to get straight to the heart of the matter: that sneaky edit which deliberately made it seem like Harper was being blithe about "the bhuurning the women and the childrens" when in fact he was responding to a question about the level of support in the Jewish community by saying he wasn't going to make decisions based on the support of one community or another.

Adler certainly shows his communications skills. He manages to explain it all clearly enough so that even someone darting around in rush-hour traffic could understand what CBC was up to -- I've gotta start listening to the guy once in a while.

Charles Adler says it takes 13 weeks to figure out the theme of his program.

Actually it usually takes about 13 minutes before a CBC gaff is exposed.

Has the damage been done? Not if we let it happen!
Bombard the CBC demanding a retraction to the story & not just a 5sec. blurp. Write your MP demanding that the CBC funds should be reviewed as they have crossed the line from a public brodcaster to GOSSIP NEWS RAG.
I thought this kind of nonsense was only restricted to the Liberals, out & out Blatant Lies.
Lawand & her producer should be given a little time to reflect & not at taxpayer expense.
A big thanks to Stephen Taylor for bringing this forth & to Charles Adler for reporting on this.

from CBCpravda--- so what is violence anyway?

There was no violence, but both groups hurled insults at each other.

At one point, aboriginal protesters sprayed some residents with water using a firehose

more nonviolence as reported at the mop&pail .which site is CBCpravda watching ?

-----------------------------------

Later that night, Mr. Watson said he saw natives wielding lacrosse sticks to shoot rocks into residents' houses.

None of the rocks hit his house, he said. "We kept the lights off."

But others weren't so lucky.

The house of an 89-year-old resident has reportedly been damaged by rocks.

"They started throwing rocks at his home, and of course that got the neighbours going who wanted to protect him and started throwing rocks back," said Ms. Trainer, who was present when the confrontation happened

Maria Minna and Paul Martin, Jr., are buddies/paypals of the Tamil Tigers terrorists/Librano$$$$$$$$$$$

"Liberals shouldn't touch this thing with a 10-foot pole," writes Maria Minna, who fortunately kept an 11-foot pole handy for just such an occasion.

Text of a memo she sent today to Liberal MPs and staffers:

Dear Colleagues:

In my opinion, Mississauga-Streetsville MP Wajid Khan should either resign his new position as Special Advisor to Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper on South Asia and the Middle East or resign temporarily from National Liberal Caucus.

Wajid’s appointment is a slick, sick, calculated move on Harper’s part. Liberals shouldn’t touch this thing with a 10-foot pole.

Harper has proven time and time again that he is a sharp, calculating, political player who doesn’t have a non- partisan bone in his body. But, this time, he has gone over the line. ...-

You and your Facist beliefs should be run out on a rail but who listens to your paranoid right wing ramblings? All of you should go fight in the middle east. You think it's a big game. You are all fools. Pawns in Right wing America's hands. You know who's pays your salary.
