I was going to comment on this, as WTC conspiracy theories drive me around the bend, but this chap said it well enough.
At one point I read the report on the failure of the WTC structures prepared by investigators from the American Society of Structural Engineers. We know exactly what happened, and the partial differential equations all add up correctly. There is no option here for conspiracy theorizing, not that that’s ever stopped the irrational befoe.

Oh my. When I was 3 or 4 years old, growing up at 11 S.D. on the outskirts of Calgary, a temporary building opposite our quarters blew up and burned at 8 on a Monday morning when the first person to aarrive flipped on the light switch and the spark ignitied natural gas which had accumulated from a leak over the weekend. Fortunately he survived, but I remember acutely, to this day, the steel girders of the building (all of the building that survived) bent and twisted like spaghetti.
I’ve seen that several times since, after fires.
The serious investigator will begin by reading something about reduction in yield strength with temperature.
Hell’s bells, most of us have seen blacksmiths at work – when iron is red hot it is workable, which also means that it has lost a lot of its strength.
The moonbat’s fire goes up and does not involve the chicken mesh. As it says, ‘after the fire was hot, the “columns” were not hot at all’.
Nice that it attempted to conduct an experiment, rather an un-liberal thing to do, but it (the moonbat) lacks skill and experience in designing a meaningful experiment and in interpreting it.
Evidence alright — evidence that modern liberalism really is a religion/defence mechanism. I long ago realized that one cannot carry on a rational discussion with teenagers, drunks and liberals. Okay — there are some rational teenagers out there. But it simply points out how facts, reality, the actual physical world we live in have zero impact on liberal mental processes. They will believe what they choose to believe because it makes them feel the way they want to feel about any given issue. Then comes the angry lashing out at any threat to the emotional cocoon. Maybe the answer will lie in drugs, chlorpromazine, amitryptilene, or one of the newer generation mood stabilizers.

Any competent forensic engineer knows that one has to use Lego to simulate the twin towers’ collapse.
Engineers reported that it was not the burning jet fuel which melted the steel. It was the material in the building that the jet fuel ignited, and that burned at a higher temperature than the jet fuel.
This has been known since 9/11. Doesn’t seem to have much effect on the tin foil hat crowd though.
These guys at DU apparently have never heard of the fact that when you increase the linear size of something by a certain factor, you increase its volume (and usually therefore its mass) by the square of that factor. In other words if you triple the length of a structure you multiply its volume by a factor of 9.
That means that the proportional strength of the chicken-wire structure is probably a million times that of the WTC structure, assuming that the linear proportions are about 1000/1. Thats why a mouse can have legs that are roughly 1/100 the thickness of its body, but a man requires legs that are roughly 1/10.
And the comment about how the wire did not even get warm actually explains another reason why this “experiment” is a crock. An open wire structure obviously cannnot contain and concentrate the heat the way a closed building can!
This stuff is called Physics, and it’s what the real students were doing while the lefties were attending their History of Marxism classes. But Physics has nothing to do with feelings, so they wouldn’t have gotten it anyway.
Actually, the WTC was not, as I recall, principally “held up by inner steel columns”. The towers were of “curtain wall” construction, which means the steel columns in the outer walls held up the building. This gives nice unobstructed interior floor space, which is a valuable thing in office towers.
The problem is, left to their own physics, curtain walls will bulge out from the weight of the floors above them, which if unconstrained will cause floors to collapse, pancaking the whole structure, as you saw. The constraints against this behaviour, in the case of the WTC, were transverse steel rods that ran between floors, through the building, essentially tieing opposing walls to each other.
Unfortunately, when you dump enough jet fuel into a confined space and give it a good source of oxygen, as through a large hole, the temperature can easily get to half the melting point of the particular steel used, which causes the rods to fairly easily sag and lengthen, which changes the force vectors at the points where the rods are attached to the walls. In the case of the WTC, this caused the connection points to fail, so the rods weren’t tieing together the outside walls, so they bulged outward, so some floors collapsed, so the towers pancaked.
I did find it interesting that the use of asbestos to insulate the rods stopped about half-way up the towers, because just at that time the use of asbestos for that purposed was banned by people who don’t know much about materials science. Some new-fangled alternative insulation was used in the top half of the towers, where the impacts were, and because it wasn’t based on conservative experience, it got blown off a lot of the connecting rods by the force of the impacts themselves. It is my understanding that if the traditional asbestos insulation had been used, it would have likely not been blown off, which means the insulation coefficient in the heat transfer equation would be much higher, which means that, whether or not that alone would have been enough to save the structures, it is quite likely that the structures would have remained integral for two or three times as long, possibly giving enough time for the towers and the area to be properly evacuated.
This can be the kind of thing that happens when irrational people cause the state to make invalid engineering decisions, such as a blanket ban on asbestos. While there is no doubt that asbestos was being used inappropriately, and needed to more carefully considered, its use in appropriate cases, such as insulating steel connecting rods in curtain-wall buildings, or insulating the large tank on the space shuttle (the foam insulation didn’t used to fall off so much, that happened when the formulation was changed to avoid asbestos), should not have been banned, at least not ’till we had time to invent and mature appropriate replacements.
It’s like DDT in some ways. It certainly was a good idea to stop spraying it around the whole landscape, that wasn’t very efficacious and it caused some harm to certain species of birds. On the other hand, spraying a DDT solution on the inside walls of human habitations twice a year almost entirely eliminates mosquito-borne malaria, and has been show to cause no cumulative negative effects in humans. However, the irrational enviro-mentalists banned it completely, and tens of millions of people have died because of their ideological blindness.
Note that the above is my understanding, from memory. I am not a professional engineer. You get what you pay for 😉

BTW, people keep referring to the metal mesh as “chicken wire” whereas to me it looks like what is known as “hardware cloth” more typically used for mortaring or plaster and stucco work. It’s soldered, not twisted together and much heavier gauge wire than chicken wire – which I doubt would have supported the concrete blocks, but the whole thing is still nonsense.
Even supposedly well educated, otherwise credible people with a lot to lose professionally are prone to adopting loony theories.

Dewdney, ( http://www.csd.uwo.ca/faculty/akd/akd.html ) a very well known mathematics / computer science professor and author at the University of Western Ontario has signed onto the 9/11 conspiracy bandwagon ( http://www.physics911.net/public/ ). In an interview with Maclean’s magazine he said that what convinced him initially was that he knew suicide is against Islam, so how could devotees of Islam be responsible for the suicide attacks? Right! Islamist terrorists don’t commit suicide. Except when they do!
Another of the theories which he promotes is that cell phones (ie. those used by the hijacked passengers to call out) don’t work from aircraft. He and his fellow conspiracy nuts claims that couldn’t happen because, for one thing, an aircraft passenger cabin acts as an impenetrable ‘Faraday cage’. However, it’s obvious that it isn’t a ‘Faraday cage’ – it’s riddled with plexiglass windows. Once again, never mind straightforward logic or plentiful the evidence to the contrary, cell phones don’t work from passenger aircraft! Except when they do!
Who knows what makes a guy like Dewdney tick. Why would a famous mathematician put his credibility at risk to promote clearly loony tunes conspiracy theories?? Theories anyone?

The relationship is cubic, in that three dimensions of a volume are increased by the factor you cited. The problem is that a material’s strength is related to its cross-section, which increases according to the square of the factor.

The problem with the DU experiment isn’t the nonlinear proportional scaling matter some of you are referring to above. The problem is that didn’t measure the actual failure mode that occurred in the case of the WTC.
Forensic engineers found some of the tangs from the failed connecting rod points. The tangs are steel plates welded to the inside of the outer wall columns, with a hole drilled through them, into which the eyes on the ends of the connecting rods are bolted. They showed that in some cases the hole in the (now hot and soft) tangs had stretched out inward and slightly downward, becoming more like ovals than circles, until they got so close to the edge of the soft steel tangs that the eyebolts were ripped right out of the tangs by the weight of the sagging connecting rods. Bingo: no rods, bulge, &c.
In order to run a proper experiment in the matter of the WTC case, you need to find these stretched out failed tags in the rubble of the experiment. That’s not possible in the DU experiment, because there were no such tangs involved in it.
That single piece of forensic evidence (along with the confirming experiments in post-hoc university engineering labs’ testing) is enough to scientifically eliminate almost all of the conspiracy theorists’ alternative scenarios. For example, if the WTC had collapsed because the columns had been compromised by any sort of explosive demolition, these particularly deformed tangs would not have been found in the rubble, but they were, so it wasn’t.

FWIW, my thoughts were not so much on the strength of the materials (since I could not imagine that anyone would argue that a soft metal wire is an analog of a girder) but on the weight of the building itself, as represented in this experiment by the concrete block. This would increase, as you point out, by the cube of the linear dimensions.

Sorry, not to be a pest, Sherlock et al, for you are correct that in the case of traditional “pile up the stones” buildings, the weight does increase something like the cube of the height (that is, the exponent is somewhere between 2 and 3, and if you build high enough, the building is almost all stone, with no room left for offices, which is less than optimal).
However, in the case of high-tech steel curtain-wall structures, the weight increases more in relation to surface area of the external walls, in other words, much more linearly in relationship to the height. Done right, this can produce taller buildings, at less cost, that are completely sound, as long as some wing nuts don’t drive a large airliner loaded with fuel into it at full velocity. That’s why variations of this technique are used in all modern skyscrapers.
In a sense, in a pile-up-the-stones building, the material just has to sit there. In a modern engineered building, the parts of the building have to work to earn their keep, they have to be maintained, and if they’re not the structure fails. The attack on the WTC effectively de-maintained some critical parts of the WTC, thus the towers structurally failed.
Vitruvius: good post, your description of the WTC structure and resultant vulnerability squares with a program I saw, on TLC. I didn’t know about the asbestos thing though. I agree with your points that essentially risks are trade-offs. How many lives has asbestos saved for instance.

Material from the molten pools of iron under the rubble, recovered weeks after the collase, have the signature traces of thermate when run under spectro analysis by BYU metalugists. Reviewed unbroadcast news video of the collapse clearly shows squib charges blowing out columns and pulverized concrete and themite-melted iron streaming from the iron box girders.
Over 500 eye witnesses and experts were not called in the 9/11 enquiry. Key witness testimony ( like that of W. Rodriguez the here who led firefighters into the building) were truncated or omitted. The finished report eludes to the improbability of a 1000 deg, kerosine fule fire on the upper 60 floors melted iron in the basement which required 2500 deg.F…but it establishes plausable deniability for the resticted government investigatons by stateing this is what they think happened but the real cause may never be known.

As I am continuously pointing out to these amature scientists, it wasn’t kerosene alone that crashed into chicken wire, it was an aeroplane made of aluminium, plastic and people that crashed into concrete, steel andother materials.
