Last week the Met attempted to explain the high number of arrests among blacks by the fact that they make up a higher proportion of the population in areas such as Southwark and Lewisham in south London, where the ANPR units operate.
However, statistics from the 2001 census show that the highest black population in any borough is no greater than about 25%. The proportion of black people across the capital as a whole is about 11%.
Peter Herbert, an independent member of the MPA and spokesman for the Society of Black Lawyers, said: “The Met really wants to avoid any allegation of disproportionality so they will seek to explain these figures by whatever nuance they can. The targeting of certain boroughs might be justified in terms of some crime, but it’s certainly not justified in terms of all crime.”
One presumes city officials will soon set about designing racial sensitivity training programs for the automatic numberplate recognition cameras responsible for collecting the data.

I note that the stories reporting on the Duke lacrosse scandal all refer to the fact that 3 white men are alleged to have raped a black woman. Seems like a bit of a double standard is in play here.

There would be a double standard if they were let off where a black man would not be. This is obviously not the case if they’ve been indicted.
You do not make a logical argument. Please read what you type for consistency before posting.
The point here is that if people commit crime they are arrested for it. If more people of one colour commit crime, more people of one colour will be arrested for it. In this case there is a computerized program responsible for targeting criminals which, unless you allege a conspiracy by the programmers, can’t be biased.
Warwick, perhaps I should have made my point more clearly. I was not saying that black men would have been let off if they committed a similar crime. I was taking issue with the way the event was reported. If the alleged rape had been by 3 black lacrosse players I do not believe that the event would have been reported as 3 blacks rape a white woman. It seems to me that racial sensitivity is a one way street.
The British are in the grip of Political Correctness foisted on them by sh*t for brains socialists and other moonbats. There is little hope of extracating themselves before their entire society goes down the toilet.

I think if the social left wants to bash the cops over stuff like this then the figures showing what % of each group is committing the crime, i.e. if 50% of people charged with car theft are black what percentage of car thefts are being done by members of the black community.If the numbers are close then it bears out the arrest rate.

The solution’s quite simple. Why are racist statistics like this kept in the first place? Stop noting the race of arrestees and the problem goes away.
I understand that the technology exists where companies can keep track of the amount of skin tone that shows up on an employees monitor to determine if that employee is viewing porn. I suspect that similar programing will be used so ANPR units will select individuals at a rate which is proportionate to their ethnic population. Voila racist cameras (or racially sensitive cameras depending on your point of view)
There are some errors in logic going on here. The evidence is that no more than 25% of people in some areas are “black.” And, 50% of car thieves are “black.” You can’t assume that no more than 25% of car thieves should be black. You can’t assume that fewer than 25% of car thieves should be black. This would assume that that “blacks” have an equal chance of being car thieves. This may be so. But, the evidence (the photo thingies) is that “blacks” are twice as likely as non-blacks to be car thieves. End of story! I would think.
