“That Book Grabbed My Ass!”

harrassed.jpg
Via Ace; from Ohio State University, another shining moment for the politics of the academic left;

Scott Savage, who serves as a reference librarian for the [Ohio State] university, suggested four best-selling conservative books for freshman reading in his role as a member of OSU Mansfields First Year Reading Experience Committee. The four books he suggested were The Marketing of Evil by David Kupelian, The Professors by David Horowitz, Eurabia: The Euro-Arab Axis by Bat Yeor, and It Takes a Family by Senator Rick Santorum. Savage made the recommendations after other committee members had suggested a series of books with a left-wing perspective, by authors such as Jimmy Carter and Maria Shriver.
Savage was put under investigation by OSUs Office of Human Resources after three professors filed a complaint of discrimination and harassment against him, saying that the book suggestions made them feel unsafe. The complaint came after the OSU Mansfield faculty voted without dissent to file charges against Savage. The faculty later voted to allow the individual professors to file charges.

The politics of “diversity”. The politics of “tolerance”. The politics of “Give us the child for 8 years and it will be a Bolshevik forever.

  1. Compare what you just read to this description of men in the last days: “lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,” etc.
Kate, how do you do bold or italics in this box?
I was thinking about the “despisers of those that are good”

  2. Incredible. There is no group more totalitarian than a socialist, because their agenda is to deny the individual. They privilege the group. This means that there is only one acceptable way of viewing the world. No dissent, no differences, are allowed.
This effectively stops thought. All thought. Because thought is based on differentiation, on seeing that ‘x’ is, as it is, either identical to or different from ‘y’. Then, you can evaluate both x and y.
The socialist group-mind is not allowed to make these distinctions. Differences are not allowed IF they are acknowledged as differences. Multiculturalism, in its definition of ‘diversity’ and ‘tolerance’, for example, doesn’t evaluate; it defines all differences as ‘equal’. This effecitvely reduces the differences to irrelevance.
This reductionism and rejection of differences, is very important; it enables control. Any evaluation is denigrated by adding the term ‘phobic’. If you evaluate homosexuality within a society, you are homophobic; if you evaluate Islam within our modern world, you are Islamophobic. Evaluation is not permitted.
The strange thing is, that with this rejection of real, quantiative and qualitative differences, the socialist world has trapped itself. It can’t affect any changes, for it cannot evaluate, measure, and develop remedies.

  3. In this case the actions of the gay chap and the University are very similar to those of the Islamofascists in the “cartoon” caper. How do the ivory tower dunderheads justify their actions?
Maybe OSU’s motto should be “only the politically correct alllowed here”. Good Lord!

  4. I have never sided with any group of ideas based on which group, right, left, center, is backing them. I have always evaluated ideas and concepts based on my own unique set of values. That having been said, I find myself usually, but not always with a right-wing POV. I find the left to have an affinity for totalitarianistic ideas, and an automatic hatred for free thought and free speech if it goes against the party line.
Moonbats=sheep. How do they get this way? Probably a lack of protein, something a daily dose of good Alberta Beef, served medium rare, would cure. The kerfuffle at OSU reinforces my conclusions.

  5. The faculty voted to ALLOW the professors to file charges?!?? I don’t care what the complaint is, whether it’s valid or not, anyone with a complaint does not need someone else’s permission to bring forward a complaint. That’s the first step in any dispute resolution process.
If the faculty had not given “permission”, or perhaps won’t regarding some future complaint, and the professors felt they had a ligitimate complaint, what would their options be? Getting blacklisted by the faculty? Socialists are very good at abusing what authority they have to protect the group, meaning the group leaders. What a mess.

  6. Mr.Savage could spin it his way by stating that to beat the conservative “enemy” the young freshmen need to understand them first.
As an aside, this is great publicity for the authors of those books. Nothing like being banned to spur sales.

  7. People wonder how we have become a Nation of appeasers? You need look only as far as the nearist school.Cowardice 101 in the guise of social studies.
If books are so scary to these infants. Only God knows what would happen if someone really threatened them.

  8. Anyone ever notice how the left can say whatever they like, offend whoever they like, violate whatever morals they like, all under the guise of free speech? Anyone who says anything to disagree with them however does not have freedom of speech but is instead a hateful, bigotted, homophobic, intolerant hatemonger. The worst part is the Libbers, the Dippers, and the courts will always back them up. Either we have free speech that applies to everyone and everything, or we don’t. Good on OSU Mansfield!

  9. What is this strange new behaviour coming from the Left? I mean, just looking at the last century, when did the Left ever demanded obedience to their ideology? (Insert winky-face here).

  10. I have noticed that when the socalist want to get a point across they use the term “every one agrees” or some variation of it. I have been on this planet for almost 60 yrs and have met a lot of people. I don’t know very many of them and certainly would not pretend to speak for any of them.
My big question is, how do these people get to know every one well enough to speak for them? I would also like them to qualify their statements by expressly excluding me.

  11. Don’t know much about the gay lifestyle and can’t get too steamed about it, pro and con.
Gays are supposed to be good at design. That’s good at least. Wondering about the design of a new less liberal flag.
You may be interested in musing over some more worthy examples of the new Canada flag.
A liberal red maple leaf has the value of simplicity for sure, but a new flag with some conservative blue and maybe a fleur de lis to include our smallest province Quebec…or just a gold maple leaf?

PS Any design ideas? Looking forward to seeing more designs. You can get ideas from ..

  12. The ‘Cease and Desist’ letter (Docs) from the Alliance Defense Fund to the OSU administration is awesome.
It would be nice if there was an equivalent in Canada.

  13. Perhaps some leftie can drop by to remind us how tolerant and open-minded the left is.
    Where’s that BCL.

  14. Jim Pook … You can serve that Alberta beef any way you want, as an anal supposiTORY if that turns your crank, just don’t force me to subsidize it’s production.
EBD….” When did the left ever demanded obedience” WHA?

  15. Apparently Ohio State approves of academic freedom, will they stand by their principles?
    http://oncampus.osu.edu/article.php?id=769
“Ohio State has always prized freedom of thought and expression, respect for multiple points of view and the civil and open expression of these views,” said Executive Vice President and Provost Barbara Snyder. “By encouraging renewed consideration of these issues across our campus, we are nurturing the most fundamental academic right – that of the free exchange of ideas. My hope is that all members of the university community will reflect further on the foundations of academic inquiry and, so, the very purpose of an institution of higher learning.”

  16. Speaking of BCL – sorry! – but I remember him predicting that the whole Christian Peace Keeper hostage rescue would be revealed to be a hoax. Think he predicted a week….

  17. Another example of why we conservative bloggers should never, never surrender when thumping the leftists.
Many have died so we could be free and equal.
Leftist professors get to require any reading they deem fit and say whatever they want, like Ward Churchill, and the left defends their freedom to do so. But when a conservative exercises his constitutionally-guaranteed rights, the left wants him silenced… and punished.
A big, defiant middle finger displayed to the left is the appropriate response.
Keep fighting the good fight against the oppression of the leftists, my conservative brothers and sisters. Freedom, democracy, the rule of law, human rights and common decency must be relentlessly defended .

  18. Another stellar example of our fine institutions of “higher learning”. Why teach a child HOW to think for themselves when they can be some much more useful TOOL when you simply teach them WHAT to think.

  19. Maybe the Right will have to be satisfied owning most of the wealth and give up trying to own our brains too.

  20. A truly remarkable display of tyranny. The conceit inherent in the comments against Savage was truly breath taking. These folks strut like vainglorious peacocks defending a turf that they alone control. The arena of Ideas.
As we are begining to glimpse in Canada a leader who’s actions and words ring with truth honesty and honor. It has the feel of a fresh warm breeze against your skin.
Those at OSU cannot let this happen under any circumstance. Their ideas will be as ashes in the mouth.

  21. Tony guitar:
“Gays are supposed to be good at design”. Yup, and African-Americans are supposed to be rhythimic what? And have very long … faces when they’re unhappy, eh?

  22. Politics of the Academy:
Someone once said that the politics of the academy are so vicious because the stakes are so small. There’s a profound observation for you!

  23. Y’all know…
This and many, many shameful incidents like it actually provide a powerful argument in favor of home-schooling.
Trust me… there are some astonishingly intelligent young home-schooled folks out there.
For example, go check out “Eye of the Storm”:
    http://iofstorm.blogspot.com.
Pretty darn good post on top: “Why We Fight”.
Rebekah is only fifteen, but is already among the best conservative bloggers I know.
In fact, she hasn’t ruled out someday being President!

  24. Any time I think of having unprotected sex, I feel threatened and in mortal danger of contractin AIDS which was brought and spread around north america by Gay men.
I know it’s a regular disease now that can be contracted in other ways, but it’s proliferation was courtesy of the most sexually active and indiscriminent of people involved in sexual activity … that would be the gay community.
Latest reports are that young gay males are now having unprotected sex again since they are under the illusion that there are drugs available to keep them alive and even perhpas cure them. This puts my tax dollars in mortal danger now too.
There is a small percentage of the population that is gay … perhap five to ten percent. They are getting far more press and consideration than they deserve. I say deserve because what is it they are campaigning for anyway? … The betterment of the society? Hardly.
There is a place for everyone in this free society and that’s fine with me, but lets keep it in perspective. Gays are not the holy grail as some many of our over-liberalized society thinks they are.
Last time I checked … homosexuality was a devience rather than the norm. The norm is sex between men and women. If you want to do otherwise, do it without fear, but use a freaking condom and keep it to yourselves. Your annual parades scare the kids.

  25. I’m astonished that gays who say they want an open and tolerant society can’t see the lousy irony in all of this. If they endorse the harrassment of this prof., they could be next. You have to be very careful about encouraging the creation of a monster. You could be his/her next dinner.

  26. I think the whole bunch of them are nuts! Scott Savage NEVER should have recommended any of those books to that bunch of Nazi’s UNLESS he what to invoke a huge national debate. I think Mr. Savage knows exactly what he is getting into.

  27. I’m sure that the faculty member that is claiming harassment did everything possible to solve the problem before filing charges. I’m sure he even bent over backwards…uh forget I said that.

  28. I think Mr. Savage just want to get rich——from the HUGE lawsuit that will ensue.
    Horny Toad

  29. A big lawsuit, maybe. The controversy that is sure to be created will make him rich – personal appearances, book deal, etc – regardless. Mr. Savage knew what he was doing before he knocked over that hornet’s nest.

  30. There is lots of proof out there how racist and intolerant the left wing academia is.
Here’s a sample math question from Bellevue Community College.
The question read, “Condoleezza holds a watermelon just over the edge of the roof of the 300-foot Federal Building, and tosses it up with a velocity of 20 feet per second.” The question went on to ask when the watermelon will hit the ground, based on a formula provided.

  31. I thought this was a joke.
Seriously. How could any thinking person respond in such a manner?
Do they not realize how foolish they appear?
    *sigh*
    een

  32. “How could any thinking person respond in such a manner?”
“Thinking people”…? We’re talking about university professors. What’s the one got to do with the other?

  33. Gotta love the emotional reasoning of the leftists — I “feel” fearful therefore there is a threat out there that has to be removed. It couldn’t be my own dysfunctional/irrational thought process that’s causing this fear — naaaww, impossible. I shouldn’t be expected to take responsibility for my own emotional immaturity, heck no! Imagine where that could lead — taking responsibility for myself? Shudder!

  34. Wait a minute, Trent (1:03 a.m.): You’re saying that Scott Savage, a librarian at a State University SHOULD NEVER have recommended the conservative books he did? Why ever NOT? As the posting says, others recommended left/lib/fem/gay books and I don’t see any posting about the convservatives on campus saying they were offended and bringing an investigation of those individuals who suggested them as “discriminat[ory]” or “harrassing.”
GIVE ME A BREAK. No one was forcing anyone to read the four books Mr. Savage suggested; no one was coercered into buying them: they were merely suggestions among many. How come he gets it in the jugular and no one else does?
The reason is because conservatives, whatever their/our quirks, are more or less grown up and realize that one wo/man’s ceiling is another wo/man’s floor; one wo/man’s junk is another wo/man’s treasure. Honestly, how infantile can you be to put Scott Savage under investigation because he SUGGESTED that students read some conservative books? GOD KNOWS, in their time at OSU, they’ll have spent about 97.5% of their time reading left/lib stuff; isn’t a tiny little bit of balance to be tolerated?
Obviously not for the Thought Nazis.
So, Trent, what are you talking about? You’re saying that Mr. Savage DESERVES this investigation because if he had just kept his mouth shut, like a good little follower of the Zeitgeist, none of this would have happened? What hornet’s nest did he knock over? Not one of his making, that’s for sure. The Nazi Thought Police put the nest up and dared people not to disturb the wasps.
Well fawgettaboutit. Sometimes the hornet’s nest needs to be disturbed. I’d be very surprised if Scott Savage gets any kind of big settlement out of this. OSU is getting a big black eye, though.
To the professors who “feel unsafe,” because a few students may be reading conservative books, grow up, get a life, and if you must, wear a life jacket at all times.
