  1. The answer, according to a Malian friend of mine who lived in France for five years, is that the French, besides being arrogant zenophobic racists, are lazy.
(He lived their four years earning an dual major honors degree from a respected French university and another year unsuccessfully attempting to start a career. He says the primary reason he couldn’t start a career, notwithstanding his excellent academic professional credentials and French fluency, is because he’s black. (I’d add to that his remarkable intellect and work ethic.) And I believe him. “En France, plus a change…”)
The French have become addicted to the social welfare state, complete with 35 hour workweeks, cradle-to-grave benefits, hypergenerous unemployment and welfare, etc.
The very idea of really competing in the hurly burly capitalist world-working hard, taking risks-all this is anathema to the new young generation who want the same gravy train that their post-war grandparents and parents have had.
Only now, that is unsustainable. But if they can’t have a job, they’d prefer to sit at home (likely their parents’ home), collect unemployment and welfare benefits, attending the odd anti-capitalist or anti-American demonstration. Perpetual juvenile indolence!

  2. the sign is in English because the French words for “Never Surrender” translate to “We give up”

  3. Um, Kate,
How many times can a troll vomit, eat the vomit and vomit it up again before it gets cleaned up?

  4. The more insecure our situation is, the more fearful we get. The more fearful we get, the more insecure we get. We start to believe we must fight for our lives when in fact we are fighting for our demize by grabbing on to the status quo like a life raft. True change is too scary even though we are unhappy with the status quo and our “life raft” is sinking.
We should be careful critisizing the French since we Canadians didn’t have the courage to elect a majority conservative government. And look how we Canadians desperately hang on to a Health system that needs to have mouth to mouth rescusitation. Any reform to date in health care has been eqivalent to trying to plug the leaks in the boat while the boat continues to leak faster and sink with the shore in site and achievable.

  5. Protesting is a long honoured French tradition. They are much more involved politically than Canadian students.
Besides it is their country they have a right to complain if they want. They have a unique lifestyle that tends to put people’s wants and needs before business wants and needs. Their attitude is that the country belongs to the people, really belongs, and every institution that wants to impinge on their traditions had better be ready for a fight.
We are far too passive in Canada. I really like their spunk.

  6. Steve D is right. Conservatives in Canada have been far too passive for too long. And Kate, I really appreciate your digging this one up. It will keep a smile on my face for days. I guess we can’t call them “cheese eating surrender monkeys” anymore.

  7. “the sign is in English because the French words for “Never Surrender” translate to “We give up”
    Good one, cal2.
Rumour has it that the main reason the French refused to assist in Iraq was because their arms eventually go numb from being repeatedly raised in the air.

  8. Bruce, the reason the French refused to assist in liberating Iraq is contained within a joke that was actually censored from a BBC talk show before the war:
    Q. What do you call a Frenchman marching on Baghdad?
    A. A salesman.

  9. As Churchill would have put it in his inimitable French:
    “Nous ne surrendrons jamais!”
    Mark
    Ottawa

  10. So steeved, how would you feel about young evangelicals protesting abortion clinics?
    That’s different, right? Thought so.

  11. Keep laughing! The trend in THIS country, is ‘outsourcing’. (It just makes so much more sense, to hire a ‘temp’ through an ‘agency’- no severance, no benefits, no notice- and at minimum wages!) Now- drag out your phonebook, (or jump on the ‘net, and find out where these ‘agencies’ are based! Hint: they aren’t based in THIS country!) And in the not-too-distant future, all of YOU will be working for an ‘agency’, too!

  12. Saving cradle to grave job security or saving their asses from dhimmitude, the French get it it wrong again.
Watching them menace and abuse policemen on FOX today was disgusting. Within the year those same policemen will be dragging their sorry asses out of bombed rubble somewhere in Paris or protecting them from the next wave of Islamofascist thuggery on their streets.
They have a unique lifestyle that tends to put people’s wants and needs before business wants and needs.
    “unique”….and crumbling before their eyes.
They have the highest tax rate in Europe. They have no global competative advantage with bloated payrolls and zero flexiblity.
They have a paralyzed government. Their demographics will them a minority in their own country given time.
steve, ever read Adam Smith or Milton Friedman? With failing businesses no one has real wages or an economic future. Pensioners have no incomes. Your understanding of economics is as bad as the French.
Compare France vs Ireland in the EU in terms of economic growth.

  13. Davie, if the trend in this country is ‘outsourcing’ it is because it makes economic sense. That is the whole basis for trade in the first place. Otherwise, we would all be baking our own bread, gathering our own eggs, making furniture for ourselves etc.
Here in BC some people recently set their hair on fire because three ferries were ordered from German shipyards. Fact is, when ferries were built locally they were shoddy, late in delivery, grossly over budget, or all three. And other than government orders, no ships were built in BC for foreign customers, which proves that the local industry was simply not sustainable.
Point being, outsourcing for goods or services is a fundamentally intelligent business practice.

  14. penny
If you want to see what happens after Capitalism’s greed ends just google “argentine factories” . There is life after Capitalism it is being invented as we speak.

  15. Doug
People can protest anything. Protesting is enervating to any group. If the anti-abortion side wins in the US there would be some questions to answer though.
    1. Who is going to care for the thousands of unwanted babies???
    2. If you care so much for human life why are there 500,000 children in foster homes? Why aren’t the child-loving christians adopting?
    Is adoption a sin?
    3. The US is 43rd in the world in infant mortality. When are those that see human life as precious going to do something about that?? To be first on the list would mean saving 19,000 babies a year! Where are the christians who hold human life so dear????
    So many hypocrits.

  16. SteveD–
The reason the U.S. has such a high infant mortality rate is because they count as “born alive” infants that in other countries would be counted as “born dead”. The U.S. routinely saves–or tries to save–infants born prematurely at 23 or 24 weeks. Those that don’t survive skew the U.S. infant mortality rate. In many OECD countries, these babies don’t even count in the infant mortality. They count as miscarriages.
So yes, the U.S. does “choose life” more than other nations. The Netherlands euthanizes the very babies the U.S. tries to save.

  17. stevie is the only reason i can think of for retroactive abortion. but try it with my child and feel my rath!!!!!!!!!

  18. say that again Mark . I heard it as
    “I snooze in my pyjamas”
which is French for I lay down my arms.
why do we even pay attention to the cheese eating surrender monkeys.

  19. Ok, I am sick and tired of hearing people say how the french gave up so easily during WW2. Let’s get one thing straight. Other than Russia, France had the biggest/longest border to defend in Europe, and the German war machine was unstoppable (education in blitzkreig tactics might help some of you understand why Germany took France in no time). Lets not forget that the only reason the English never gave up is because they had the english channel seperating them from the germans. Put any nation, be it Russia, USA, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, etc. in france at the start of WW2 (attention americans: WW2 started in 1939 for the rest of the world, not 1941) and all would have fallen.

  20. Penny: If you live in North America, you should also note that our demographics in Canada and USA will make us a minority in our own country in a very short time. I think your comments on this subject are not needed as this has nothing to do with the situation at hand. Also, who was pulled out of bombed rubble? French people in Paris, or Americans in New York?

  21. Also, who was pulled out of bombed rubble? French people in Paris, or Americans in New York?
People in the the London metro, children in Beslin, people on Spanish trains, vacationers in Bali, etc…..France is ripe and has the demographics for a for a big hit from your friends the Islamofascists.
Hey, Marc, not “was”, but “will be” if you are following the trajectory of the Islamofascists in France and globally. Guessing that your point is that America deserved it and other are immune, you aren’t adding up the global body count since 9/11.
you should also note that our demographics in Canada and USA will make us a minority in our own country in a very short time.
The immigration debate/bill is an attempt to stop that in the US. Disturb you, Marc?
I think your comments on this subject are not needed as this has nothing to do with the situation at hand.
Want to share with us what that “situation at hand” is, Marc? Or perhaps you are French and felt my comments were insulting. I stand on my comments. The French are idiots.

  22. So much material, where to begin.
There is the model economy of Argentina, french spunk (eeeww), France having a tough time of it in WW2 compared to say, Russia.
How sad that history does not teach us. We fight human nature, we close our eyes and we rewrite the history books.
SteveD, socialism is a failure. It has ever been a failure. Western Europe is crumbling because these lessons have not been learned. South America is going down that same path. All attempts at reforms were not followed through and once again the same mistakes are happening. Chavez in Venezuela has high oil prices but already production is dropping and the industry infrastructure is falling apart. Meanwhile redistribution is occuring. What is going to happen when oil drops?
Pick up a history book, SteveD. Once again you play the fool with your witless statements.
    enough

  23. why are there 500,000 children in foster homes?
steve, could they be the by-product of the welfare state….victims of the feminist mantra that husbands aren’t needed, off-spring of the drug-addled class where reponsibility is not a concern, off-spring of the sad creatures that bought into the left’s victim politics, off-spring of teenage mom’s too immature to raise kids, off-spring of gangsta dads doing time rather than get a job or raise a family?
Everyone in social servives knows those kids histories, and it ain’t pretty. But, then you’ve never been in social services or you wouldn’t have raised that question.
steve, a hint: read more history, economics and politcal history and you won’t be so left in the dark.
I feel like every day is a struggle for you. You post. A rebuttal question is asked. It’s ignored. You post more dribble. You are trashed. You post more dribble. You are humilitated intellectually. You post more dribble. The kindness of strangers keeps you from being bitch-slapped into oblivion. You post more dribble.

  24. That sign is in English because, whether you agree with the protesters or not (and I don’t), some of them are obviously smart enough to know the international media (CNN, Sky etc., etc.) has its cameras out.
It reminds me of Bosnia-Hercegovina and the night-and-day difference between the relatively media-savvy Bosnian Muslims and the Bosnian Serbs who were essentially clueless about it all.
The Bosnian Serbs would have a protest but all their signs would be in Serbo-Croat and in the Cyrillic alphabet. Result: unintelligible chicken-scratchings to Joe Average watching CNN.
In contrast, the Bosnian Muslims were always careful to leaven their protest signs with plenty of big ones IN ENGLISH.

  25. just think , in this country (PQ)that sign would have had to been French with smaller English subtitles.
“land of the freaks and home of the breve”

  26. Penny:
I am French-Canadian, and yes I was insulted by your comments made about the French. I did not point out that people died in the USA because they deserved it. If you had actually taken the time to reflect rather than react, you would’ve understood that the point made was this: No one is immune. Yes, France is ripe and ready for a big hit. As is every other country in the world that oppresses a minority.
I find your comments that “your friends the Islamofascists” very disturbing. I call a friend anyone who will respect me to the same level that I respect them. If a Jew will share his bread with me, I will share my bread with him. If a Muslim will let me drink from his cup, he shall drink from mine. To assume that I have “Islamofascist” friends is beyond comprehension. You must be American. “If you’re not with us, then your with them” comes to mind when reading your bullshit.

  27. Oooooooo, Penny, she’s so smart. She has a rebuttal for everyone’s posts. I have to wonder what it is she does for a living to be so smart. I mean, come on folks, she has an answer for EVERYTHING… I thought all common sense was lost nowadays, but hey, we have penny to keep us in check. She’s obviously studied and “read more history, economics and politcal history” to be able to know everything, and answer everyone. She even had the gall tell stevie:
“Everyone in social servives knows those kids histories, and it ain’t pretty. But, then you’ve never been in social services or you wouldn’t have raised that question.”
To be a woman, first of all, and to have been in social services, and to come out on top with all that education… WOW! What country are you in? I just HAVE to go there and become just as smart as you.
And of course, if you question her posts, then you must “have Islamofascist” friends, because I mean come on, only the enemy disagrees with Penny.
Do you have any idea how vague the term “Islamofascist” is? Your inability or unwillingness to understand other people’s religious beliefs is what fuels their anger towards western people in general. You should hold your head in shame. Your comments will only continue to inflame those who oppose you. Understanding is the way to the future. Now, if YOU had studied history a bit better, you’d realies that history repeats itself, and history has taught us that by failing to understand our enemy, we do not respect him. By not respecting our enemy, we underestimate his capabilities. By underestimating his capabilities, we leave ourselves vulnerable.
